Asymptotics for minimizers of a Donaldson functional and mean curvature 1-immersions of surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds

It has been shown in by Huang-Lucia-Tarantello [17] that, for given $\vert c \vert <1$, the moduli space of constant mean curvature (CMC) $c$-immersions of a closed orientable surface of genus $\mathfrak{g} \geq 2$ into a hyperbolic $3$-manifold can be parametrized by elements of the tangent bundle of the corresponding Teichmüller space. This is attained by showing the unique solvability of the Gauss-Codazzi equations governing (CMC) c-immersions. The corresponding unique solution is identified as the global minimum (and only critical point) of the Donaldson functional $D_t$ (introduced in [11]) given in (1.3) with $t=1-c^{2}$. When $\vert c \vert \geq 1$ (i.e. $t\leq 0$), so far nothing is known about the existence of analogous (CMC) c-immersions. Indeed, for $t\leq 0$ the functional $D_{t}$ may no longer be bounded from below and evident non-existence situations do occur. Already the case $\vert c \vert =1$ (i.e. $t=0$) appears rather involved and actually (CMC) 1-immersions can be attained only as "limits" of (CMC) c-immersions for $\vert c \vert \longrightarrow 1^{-}$. To handle this situation, here we analyse the asymptotic behaviour of minimizers of $D_{t}$ as $t \longrightarrow 0^{+}$. We use an accurate asymptotic analysis to describe possible blow-up phenomena. In this way, we can relate the existence of (CMC) 1-immersions to the Kodaira map. As a consequence, we obtain the first existence and uniqueness result about (CMC) 1-immersions of surfaces of genus $\mathfrak{g}=2$ into hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Donaldson Functional in Teichmüller Theory

In this paper we define a Donaldson type functional whose Euler-Lagrange equations are a system of differential equations which corresponds to Hitchin's self-duality equations for a suitable choice of Higgs bundle on closed Riemann surfaces. The main challenge of this functional is its lack of regularity and lack of compactness when defined in its natural domain of definition. Though a standard variational approach cannot directly be applied, we provide the appropriate analytical tools that make Donaldson functional treatable by a variational viewpoint. We prove that this functional admits a unique critical point corresponding to its global minimum. As an immediate consequence, we find that this system of self-duality equations admits a unique solution. Among the applications in geometry of this fact, we obtain a parametrization of closed constant mean curvature immersions in hyperbolic manifolds (possibly incomplete), and their moduli spaces.

On the blow-up analysis at collapsing poles for solutions of singular Liouville type equations

We analyse a blow-up sequence of solutions for Liouville type equations involving Dirac measures with "collapsing" poles. We consider the case where blow-up occurs exactly at a point where the poles coalesce. After proving that a "quantization" property still holds for the "blow-up mass", we obtain precise point-wise estimates when blow-up occurs with the least blow-up mass. Interestingly, such estimates express the exact analogue of those obtained for "bubble" solutions of "regular" Liouville equations, when the "collapsing" Dirac measures are neglected. Such information will be used to describe the asymptotic behaviour of minimizers of the Donaldson functional introduced by Goncalves and Uhlenbeck (2007), yielding to mean curvature 1-immersions of surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Blow up analysis for a cosmic strings equation

In this paper we develop a blow up analysis for solutions of a planar semilinear elliptic equation involving exponential nonlinearities. Such solutions describe cosmic strings, and we show how their blow up behaviour is characterised by new and surprising phenomena. For example in some cases, the blow up profile of the solution is described in terms of a differential problem that bares a geometrical meaning in the context of the uniformization of the Riemann sphere with conical singularities.

On non-topological solutions for planar Liouville Systems of Toda-type

Motivated by the study of non abelian Chern Simons vortices of non topological type in Gauge Field Theory, we analyse the solvability of planar Liouville systems of Toda type in presence of singular sources. We identify necessary and sufficient conditions on the "flux" pair which ensure the radial solvability of the system. Since the given system includes the (integrable) 2 X 2 Toda system as a particular case, thus we recover the existence result available in this case. Our method relies on a blow-up analysis, which even in the radial setting, takes new turns compared with the single equation case.

Chern--Simons Vortices in the Gudnason Model

We present a series of existence theorems for multiple vortex solutions in the Gudnason model of the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric field theory where non-Abelian gauge fields are governed by the pure Chern--Simons dynamics at dual levels and realized as the solutions of a system of elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearity over two-dimensional domains. In the full plane situation, our method utilizes a minimization approach, and in the doubly periodic situation, we employ an-inequality constrained minimization approach. In the latter case, we also obtain sufficient conditions under which we show that there exist at least two gauge-distinct solutions for any prescribed distribution of vortices. In other words, there are distinct solutions with identical vortex distribution, energy, and electric and magnetic charges.

Doubly Periodic Self-Dual Vortices for a Relativistic Non-Abelian Chern--Simons Model

In this paper we establish a multiplicity result concerning the existence of doubly periodic solutions for a $2\times2$ nonlinear elliptic system arising in the study of self-dual non-Abelian Chern--Simons vortices. We show that the given system admits at least two solutions when the Chern--Simons coupling parameter $κ>0$ is sufficiently small; while no solutions exist for $κ>0$ sufficiently large. As in [36] we use a variational formulation of the problem. Thus, we obtain a first solution via a (local) minimization method and show that it is asymptotically gauge-equivalent to the (broken) principal embedding vacuum of the system, as $κ\to 0$. Then we obtain the second solution by a min-max procedure of "mountain pass" type.

Solutions to the Master Equations Governing Fractional Vortices

By means of variational methods, in this paper, we establish sharp existence results for solutions of the master equations governing `fractional multiple vortices.' In the doubly periodic situation, the conditions for existence are both necessary and sufficient and give the upper bounds for the vortex numbers in terms of the size of the periodic cell domain. In the planar situation, there is no restriction on the vortex numbers. In both situations, the solutions are uniquely determined by the prescribed locations and the local winding numbers of the vortices.

Radial symmetry and symmetry breaking for some interpolation inequalities

We analyze the radial symmetry of extremals for a class of interpolation inequalities known as Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities, and for a class of weighted logarithmic Hardy inequalities which appear as limiting cases of the first ones. In both classes we show that there exists a continuous surface that splits the set of admissible parameters into a region where extremals are symmetric and a region where symmetry breaking occurs. In previous results, the symmetry breaking region was identified by showing the linear instability of the radial extremals. Here we prove that symmetry can be broken even within the set of parameters where radial extremals correspond to local minima for the variational problem associated with the inequality. For interpolation inequalities, such a symmetry breaking phenomenon is entirely new.
