Additional numerical and graphical evidence to support some Conjectures on discrete Schrödinger operators with a more general long range condition

This document contains additional numerical and graphical evidence to support some of the conjectures mentioned in \cite{GM3}. We give more evidence for $κ=3,4$ in dimension 2. As mentioned in that article we still don't quite understand the sets $\boldsymbolμ_κ(Δ)$ and $\boldsymbolΘ_κ(Δ)$ on $(0,1/2)$ for $κ=3$ in dimension 2. Here we give a bunch more threshold energies for $κ= 3$ in dimension 2.

Thresholds and more bands of a.c. Spectrum for the discrete Schr{ö}dinger operator with a more general long range condition

We continue the investigation of the existence of absolutely continuous (a.c.) spectrum for the discrete Schrödinger operator $Δ+V$ on $\ell^2(\Z^d)$, in dimensions $d\geq 2$, for potentials $V$ satisfying the long range condition $n_i(V-τ_i ^κV)(n) = O(\ln^{-q}(|n|))$ for some $q>2$, $κ\in \N$, and all $1 \leq i \leq d$, as $|n| \to \infty$. $τ_i ^κ V$ is the potential shifted by $κ$ units on the $i^{\text{th}}$ coordinate. The difference between this article and \cite{GM2} is that here finite linear combinations of conjugate operators are constructed leading to more bands of a.c.\ spectrum being observed. The methodology is backed primarily by graphical evidence because the linear combinations are built by numerically implementing a polynomial interpolation. On the other hand an infinitely countable set of thresholds, whose exact definition is given later, is rigorously identified. Our overall conjecture, at least in dimension 2, is that the spectrum of $Δ+V$ is void of singular continuous spectrum, and consecutive thresholds are endpoints of a band of a.c. spectrum.

Thresholds and more bands of A.C. spectrum for the Molchanov--Vainberg Schrödinger operator with a more general long range condition

The existence of absolutely continuous (a.c.) spectrum for the discrete Molchanov-Vainberg Schrödinger operator $D+V$ on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$, in dimensions $d\geq 2$, is further investigated for potentials $V$ satisfying the long range condition $n_i(V-τ_i ^κV)(n) = O(\ln^{-q}(|n|))$ for some $q>2$, $κ\in \mathbb{N}$ even, and all $1 \leq i \leq d$, as $|n| \to \infty$. $τ_i ^κ V$ is the potential shifted by $κ$ units on the $i^{\text{th}}$ coordinate. In this article \textit{finite} linear combinations of conjugate operators are constructed. These lead to more bands of a.c.\ spectrum being found. However, the new bands of a.c. spectrum are justified mainly by graphical evidence because the coefficients of the linear combinations are obtained by numerical polynomial interpolation. At the same time, an infinitely countable set of thresholds is rigorously identified (these will be defined exactly in the article). We conjecture that the spectrum of $D+V$ in dimension 2 is void of singular continuous spectrum, and that consecutive thresholds constitute endpoints of a band of a.c. spectrum.

Limiting absorption principle for discrete Schr{ö}dinger operators with a Wigner-von Neumann potential and a slowly decaying potential

We consider discrete Schr{ö}dinger operators on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ for which the perturbation consists of the sum of a long-range type potential and a Wigner-von Neumann type potential. Still working in a framework of weighted Mourre theory, we improve the limiting absorption principle (LAP) that was obtained in [Ma1]. To our knowledge, this is a new result even in the one-dimensional case. The improvement consists in a weakening of the assumptions on the long-range potential and better LAP weights. The improvement relies only on the fact that the generator of dilations (which serves as conjugate operator) is bounded from above by the position operator. To exploit this, Loewner's theorem on operator monotone functions is invoked.

Propagation estimates in the one-commutator theory

In the abstract framework of Mourre theory, the propagation of states is understood in terms of a conjugate operator $A$. A powerful estimate has long been known for Hamiltonians having a good regularity with respect to $A$ thanks to the limiting absorption principle (LAP). We study the case where $H$ has less regularity with respect to $A$, specifically in a situation where the LAP and the absence of singularly continuous spectrum have not yet been established. We show that in this case the spectral measure of $H$ is a Rajchman measure and we derive some propagation estimates. One estimate is an application of minimal escape velocities, while the other estimate relies on an improved version of the RAGE formula. Based on several examples, including continuous and discrete Schrödinger operators, it appears that the latter propagation estimate is a new result for multi-dimensional Hamiltonians.

Sub-exponential decay of eigenfunctions for some discrete Schrödinger operators

Following the method of Froese and Herbst, we show for a class of potentials V that an eigenfunction $ψ$ with eigenvalue E of the multi-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator H = $Δ$ + V on \mathbb{Z}^d decays sub-exponentially whenever the Mourre estimate holds at E. In the one-dimensional case we further show that this eigenfunction decays exponentially with a rate at least of cosh^{--1}((E -- 2)/($θ$\_E -- 2)), where $θ$\_E is the nearest threshold of H located between E and 2. A consequence of the latter result is the absence of eigenvalues between 2 and the nearest thresholds above and below this value. The method of Combes-Thomas is also reviewed for the discrete Schrödinger operators.

The limiting absorption principle for the discrete Wigner-von Neumann operator

We apply weighted Mourre commutator theory to prove the limiting absorption principle for the discrete Schr{ö}dinger operator perturbed by the sum of a Wigner-von Neumann and long-range type potential. In particular, this implies a new result concerning the absolutely continuous spectrum for these operators even for the one-dimensional operator. We show that methods of classical Mourre theory based on differential inequalities and on the generator of dilation cannot apply to the mentionned Schr{ö}dinger operators.

The energy budget of GRBs based on updated prompt \& afterglow observations

We compare the isotropic equivalent 15-2000 keV gamma-ray energy, E_gamma, emitted by a sample of 91 swift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with known redshifts, with the isotropic equivalent fireball energy, E_fb, as estimated within the fireball model framework from X-ray afterglow observations of these bursts. The uncertainty in E_gamma, which spans the range of ~10^51 erg to ~10^53.5 erg, is approximately 25% on average, due mainly to the extrapolation from the BAT detector band to the 15-2000 keV band. The uncertainty in E_fb is approximately a factor of 2, due mainly to the X-ray measurements' scatter. We find E_gamma and E_fb to be tightly correlated. The average(std) of η^11hr_gamma is approximately log_10(E_gamma/(3ε _eE^11hr_fb)) are -0.34(0.60), and the upper limit on the intrinsic spread of η_gamma is approximately 0.5 (ε_e is the fraction of shocked plasma energy carried by electrons and E^x hr_fb is inferred from the X-ray flux at x hours). We also find that E_fb inferred from X-ray observations at 3 and 11 hours are similar, with an average(std) of log_10(E^3hr_fb/E^11hr_fb) of 0.04(0.28). The small variance of η_gamma implies that burst-to-burst variations in ε_e and in the efficiency of fireball energy conversion to gamma-rays are small, and suggests that both are of order unity. The small variance of η_gamma and the similarity of E^3hr_fb and E^11hr_fb further imply that ε_e does not vary significantly with shock Lorentz factor, and that for most bursts the modification of fireball energy during the afterglow phase, by processes such as radiative losses or extended duration energy injection, are not significant. Finally, our results imply that if fireballs are indeed jets, then the jet opening angle satisfies θ>0.1 for most cases. [abridged]
