Microstructuring YbRh2Si2 for resistance and noise measurements down to ultra-low temperatures

The discovery of superconductivity in the quantum critical Kondo-lattice system YbRh2Si2 at an extremely low temperature of 2 mK has inspired efforts to perform high-resolution electrical resistivity measurements down to this temperature range in highly conductive materials. Here we show that control over the sample geometry by microstructuring using focused-ion-beam (FIB) techniques allows to reach ultra-low temperatures and increase signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) tenfold, without adverse effects to sample quality. In five experiments we show four-terminal sensing resistance and magnetoresistance measurements which exhibit sharp phase transitions at the Néel temperature, and Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillations between 13 T and 18 T where we identified a new SdH frequency of 0.39 kT. The increased SNR allowed resistance fluctuation (noise) spectroscopy that would not be possible for bulk crystals, and confirmed intrinsic 1/f-type fluctuations. Under controlled strain, two thin microstructured samples exhibited a large increase of T_N from 67 mK up to 188 mK while still showing clear signatures of the phase transition and SdH oscillations. SQUID-based thermal noise spectroscopy measurements in a nuclear demagnetisation refrigerator down to 0.95 mK, show a sharp superconducting transition at T_c = 1.2 mK. These experiments demonstrate microstructuring as a powerful tool to investigate the resistance and the noise spectrum of highly conductive correlated metals over wide temperature ranges.

Low-Temperature Thermal Conductivity of CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$

CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a rare unconventional superconductor ($T_c=0.26$ K) characterized by two adjacent superconducting phases for a magnetic field $H \parallel c$-axis of the tetragonal crystal structure. Antiferromagnetic order, quadrupole-density-wave order ($T_0 = 0.4$ K) and the proximity of this material to a quantum-critical point have also been reported: The coexistence of these phenomena with superconductivity is currently under discussion. Here, we present thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity measurements on a single crystal of CeRh$_2$As$_2$ between 60 mK and 200 K and in magnetic fields ($H \parallel c$) up to 8 T. Our measurements at low $T$ verify the Wiedemann-Franz law within the error bars. The $T$ dependence of the thermal conductivity $κ(T)$ shows a pronounced drop below $T_c$ which is also field dependent and thus interpreted as the signature of superconductivity. However, the large residual resistivity and the lack of sharp anomalies in $κ(T)$ at the expected transition temperatures clearly indicate that samples of much higher purity are required to gain more information about the superconducting gap structure.

Two-dimensional XY-type Magnetic Properties of Locally Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$

We performed $^{75}$As-NMR measurements to investigate the normal-state magnetic properties of CeRh$_2$As$_2$, a recently-discovered heavy-fermion superconductor. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the Knight shift at the As(2) site indicate easy-plane-type magnetic anisotropy in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. With regard to spin fluctuations, the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ arising from the 4$f$ electrons decreases from high-temperature constant behavior on cooling at $\sim$ 40~K, which is typical behavior of heavy-fermion systems. In addition, $1/T_1$ becomes constant at low temperatures, suggesting spatially two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Two-dimensional magnetic correlations in the real space are quite rare among heavy-fermion superconductors, and they may be a key factor in the unique superconducting multi-phase in CeRh$_2$As$_2$.

Observation of antiferromagnetic order as odd-parity multipoles inside the superconducting phase in CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Spatial inversion symmetry in crystal structures is closely related to the superconducting (SC) and magnetic properties of materials. Recently, several theoretical proposals that predict various interesting phenomena caused by the breaking of the local inversion symmetry have been presented. However, experimental validation has not yet progressed owing to the lack of model materials. Here we present evidence for antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (SC transition temperature $T_{\rm SC} \sim 0.37$~K), wherein the Ce site breaks the local inversion symmetry. The evidence is based on the observation of different extents of broadening of the nuclear quadrupole resonance spectrum at two crystallographically inequivalent As sites. This AFM ordering breaks the inversion symmetry of this system, resulting in the activation of an odd-parity magnetic multipole. Moreover, the onset of antiferromagnetism $T_{\rm N}$ within an SC phase, with $T_{\rm N} < T_{\rm SC}$, is quite unusual in systems wherein superconductivity coexists or competes with magnetism. Our observations show that CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is a promising system to study how the absence of local inversion symmetry induces or influences unconventional magnetic and SC states, as well as their interaction.

Quantum critical behaviour and Lifshitz transition in intermediate valence $α$-YbAlB$_4$

Intermetallic compounds containing $f$-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic $f$-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass ($m^{*}$) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of $f$-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with quasiparticles of moderate $m^{*}$. Such systems are typically isotropic, with a characteristic energy scale $T_0$ of the order of hundreds of kelvins that require large magnetic fields or pressures to promote a valence or magnetic instability. Here we show that the intermediate valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$ surprisingly exhibits both quantum critical behaviour and a Lifshitz transition under low magnetic field, which is attributed to the anisotropy of the hybridization between the conduction and localized $f$-electrons. These findings suggest a new route to bypass the large valence energy scale in developing the QC.

Quantum phase transitions and multicriticality in Ta(Fe1-xVx)2

We present a comprehensive study of synthesis, structure analysis, transport and thermodynamic properties of the C14 Laves phase Ta(Fe1-xVx)2. Our measurements confirm the appearance of spin-density wave (SDW) order within a dome-like region of the x - T phase diagram with vanadium content 0.02 < x < 0.3. Our results indicate that on approaching TaFe2 from the vanadium-rich side, ferromagnetic (FM) correlations increase faster than the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ones. This results in an exchange-enhanced susceptibility and in the suppression of the SDW transition temperature for x < 0.13 forming the dome-like shape of the phase diagram. This effect is strictly related to a significant lattice distortion of the crystal structure manifested in the c/a ratio. At x = 0.02 both FM and AFM energy scales have similar strength and the system remains paramagnetic down to 2 K with an extremely large Stoner enhancement factor of about 400. Here, spin fluctuations dominate the temperature dependence of the resistivity ρ~ T ^ 3/2 and of the specific heat C/T ~ - log(T) which deviate from their conventional Fermi liquid forms, inferring the presence of a quantum critical point of dual nature.

Strong pinning of vortices by antiferromagnetic domain boundaries in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$

We have studied the isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ of CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ with $x$ = 0.0075 and 0.01 down to 50 mK. Pronounced field-history dependent phenomena occur in the coexistence regime of the superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. At low-fields, a phenomenological model of magnetic-flux entry well explains $M(H)$ implying the dominance of bulk pinning effect. However, unless crystallographic quenched disorder is hysteretic, the asymmetric peak effect (ASPE) which appears at higher fields cannot be explained by the pinning of vortices due to material defects. Also the temperature dependence of the ASPE deviates from the conventional scenario for the peak effect. Comparison of our thermodynamic phase diagrams with those from previous neutron scattering and magnetoresistance experiments indicates that the pinning of vortices takes place at the field-history dependent antiferromagnetic domain boundaries.

Spectroscopic study of the magnetic ground state of Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$

We have investigated single crystals and polycrystals from the series Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$, $-0.004 \leq y \leq 0.018$ by electron spin resonance, muon spin relaxation and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Our data establish that at lowest temperatures all samples exhibit bulk magnetic order. Slight Fe-excess induces low-moment ferromagnetism, consistent with bulk magnetometry ($\simeq 0.06 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$), Nb--rich and stoichiometric NbFe$_2$ display spin density wave order with small magnetic moment amplitudes of the order $\sim 0.001 - 0.01 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$. This provides microscopic evidence for a modulated magnetic state on the border of ferromagnetism in NbFe$_2$.

Unusual weak magnetic exchange in two different structure types: YbPt$_2$Sn and YbPt$_2$In

We present the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and transport properties of the two new compounds YbPt$_2$Sn and YbPt$_2$In. X-ray powder diffraction shows that they crystallize in different structure types, the hexagonal ZrPt$_2$Al and the cubic Heusler type, respectively. Despite quite different lattice types, both compounds present very similar magnetic properties: a stable trivalent Yb$^{3+}$, no evidence for a sizeable Kondo interaction, and very weak exchange interactions with a strength below 1K as deduced from specific heat $C(T)$. Broad anomalies in $C(T)$ suggest short range magnetic ordering at about 250mK and 180mK for YbPt$_2$Sn and YbPt$_2$In, respectively. The weak exchange and the low ordering temperature result in a large magnetocaloric effect as deduced from the magnetic field dependence of $C(T)$, making these compounds interesting candidates for magnetic cooling. In addition we found in YbPt$_2$In evidences for a charge density wave transition at about 290K. The occurrence of such transitions within several RET$_2$X compound series (RE = rare earth, T = noble metal, X = In, Sn) is analyzed.

Evidence for a Kondo destroying quantum critical point in YbRh2Si2

The heavy-fermion metal YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ is a weak antiferromagnet below $T_{N} = 0.07$ K. Application of a low magnetic field $B_{c} = 0.06$ T ($\perp c$) is sufficient to continuously suppress the antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Below $T \approx 10$ K, the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat $γ(T)$ exhibits a logarithmic divergence. At $T < 0.3$ K, $γ(T) \sim T^{-ε}$ ($ε: 0.3 - 0.4$), while the electrical resistivity $ρ(T) = ρ_{0} + aT$ ($ρ_{0}$: residual resistivity). Upon extrapolating finite-$T$ data of transport and thermodynamic quantities to $T = 0$, one observes (i) a vanishing of the "Fermi surface crossover" scale $T^{*}(B)$, (ii) an abrupt jump of the initial Hall coefficient $R_{H}(B)$ and (iii) a violation of the Wiedemann Franz law at $B = B_{c}$, the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP). These observations are interpreted as evidence of a critical destruction of the heavy quasiparticles, i.e., propagating Kondo singlets, at the QCP of this material.

Magnetization study of the energy scales in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under chemical pressure

We present a systematic study of the magnetization in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under slightly negative (6?% Ir substitution) and positive (7% Co substitution) chemical pressure. We show how the critical field $H_{0}$, associated with the high-field Lifshitz transitions, is shifted to lower (higher) values with Co (Ir) substitution. The critical field $H_{\mathrm{N}}$, which identifies the boundary line of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase $T_{\mathrm{N}}(H)$ increases with positive pressure and it approaches zero with 6% Ir substitution. On the other side, the crossover field $H^{*}$, associated with the energy scale $T^{*}(H)$ where a reconstruction of the Fermi surface has been observed, is not much influenced by the chemical substitution.}{Following the analysis proposed in Refs.\,\cite{Paschen2004,Gegenwart2007,Friedemann2009,Tokiwa2009a} we have fitted the quantity $\tilde{M}(H)=M+(dM/dH)H$ with a crossover function to indentify $H^{*}$. The $T^{*}(H)$ line follows an almost linear $H$-dependence at sufficiently high fields outside the AFM phase, but it deviates from linearity at $T \le T_{\mathrm{N}}(0)$ and in Yb(Rh$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ it changes slope clearly inside the AFM phase. Moreover, the FWHM of the fit function depends linearly on temperature outside the phase, but remains constant inside, suggesting either that such an analysis is valid only for $T \ge T_{\mathrm{N}}(0)$ or that the Fermi surface changes continuously at $T = 0$ inside the AFM phase.}}

The role of hyperfine coupling in magnetic and quadrupolar ordering of Pr3Pd20Si6

We study the ternary clathrate Pr3Pd20Si6 in specific heat and AC-susceptibility measurements on a high-quality single crystal, distinguishing antiferromagnetic (AFM) and antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) ordering on two sublattices of inequivalent Pr sites. The specific heat shows the direct involvement of nuclear spin degrees of freedom in the AFM ordering, which is well supported by our calculation of the hyperfine level scheme without adjustable parameters. Pr3Pd20Si6 is therefore one of the rare materials where the nuclear moments are involved in the formation of the magnetic ground state.

Huge First-Order Metamagnetic Transition in the Paramagnetic Heavy-Fermion System CeTiGe

We report on the observation of large, step-like anomalies in the magnetization ($ΔM = 0.74$\,$μ_{\rm B}$/Ce), in the magnetostriction ($Δl/l_{0} = 2.0 \cdot 10^{-3}$), and in the magnetoresistance in polycrystals of the paramagnetic heavy-fermion system CeTiGe at a critical magnetic field $μ_0 H_c \approx $ 12.5\,T at low temperatures. The size of these anomalies is much larger than those reported for the prototypical heavy-fermion metamagnet CeRu$_2$Si$_2$. Furthermore, hysteresis between increasing and decreasing field data indicate a real thermodynamic, first-order type of phase transition, in contrast to the crossover reported for CeRu$_2$Si$_2$. Analysis of the resistivity data shows a pronounced decrease of the electronic quasiparticle mass across $H_c$. These results establish CeTiGe as a new metamagnetic Kondo-lattice system, with an exceptionally large, metamagnetic transition of first-order type at a moderate field.

Normal and intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in Nb1-yFe2+y

The Hall effect on selected samples of the dilution series Nb1-yFe2+y is studied. Normal and anomalous contributions are observed, with positive normal Hall effect dominating at high temperatures. Consistent analysis of the anomalous contribution is only possible for Fe-rich Nb0.985Fe2.015 featuring a ferromagnetic ground state. Here, a positive normal Hall coefficient is found at all temperatures with a moderate maximum at the spin-density-wave transition. The anomalous Hall effect is consistent with an intrinsic (Berry-phase) contribution which is constant below the ordering temperature TC and continuously vanishes above TC. For stoichiometric NbFe2 and Nb-rich Nb1.01Fe1.99 - both having a spin-density-wave ground state - an additional contribution to the Hall resistivity impedes a complete analysis and indicates the need for more sophisticated models of the anomalous Hall effect in itinerant antiferromagnets.

Single-ion Kondo Scaling of the Coherent Fermi Liquid Regime in Ce1-xLaxNi2Ge2

Thermodynamic and transport properties of the La-diluted Kondo lattice CeNi2Ge2 were studied in a wide temperature range. The Ce-rich alloys Ce1-xLaxNi2Ge2 were found to exhibit distinct features of the coherent heavy Fermi liquid. At intermediate compositions (0.7 <= x <= 0.9) non-Fermi liquid properties have been observed, followed by the local Fermi liquid behavior in the dilute limit. The 4f-electron contribution to the specific heat was found to follow the predictions of the Kondo impurity model both in the local as well as coherent regimes, with the characteristic Kondo temperature decreasing rapidly from about 30 K for the parent compound CeNi2Ge2 to about 1K in the most dilute samples. The specific heat does not show any evidence for the emergence of a new characteristic energy scale related to the formation of the coherent Kondo lattice.

Thermoelectric transport across the metamagnetic transition of CeRu2Si2

We have measured the thermopower across the metamagnetic transition of the heavy fermion compound CeRu2Si2 at temperatures down to 0.1K and magnetic fields up to 11.5T. We find a large negative enhancement of the thermopower on crossing the metamagnetic field, as well as a sudden change in slope. We argue that this is consistent with the Zeeman-driven deformation of the Fermi surface through a topological transition. The field dependence of the thermopower highlights the discrepancy between thermodynamic and transport properties across the metamagnetic transition.

Type I Superconductivity in YbSb2 Single Crystals

We present evidence of type I superconductivity in YbSb2 single crystals, from DC and AC magnetization, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. The critical temperature and critical field are determined to be $T_c\approx$ 1.3 K and $H_c\approx$ 55 Oe. A small Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ= 0.05, together with typical magnetization isotherms of type I superconductors, small critical field values, a strong Differential Paramagnetic Effect (DPE) signal, and a field-induced change from second to first order phase transition, confirm the type I nature of the superconductivity in YbSb2. A possible second superconducting state is observed in the radiofrequency (RF) susceptibility measurements, with $T_{c}^{(2)}\approx$ 0.41 K and $H_{c}^{(2)}\approx$ 430 Oe.
