An Upper Bound for the First Hilbert Coefficient of Gorenstein Algebras and Modules

Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $M= \bigoplus_n M_n$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, minimally generated by homogeneous elements of degree zero with a graded $R$-minimal free resolution $\mathbf{F}$. A Cohen-Macaulay module $M$ is Gorenstein when the graded resolution is symmetric. We give an upper bound for the first Hilbert coefficient, $e_1$ in terms of the shifts in the graded resolution of $M$. When $M = R/I$, a Gorenstein algebra, this bound agrees with the bound obtained in \cite{ES} in Gorenstein algebras with quasi-pure resolution. We conjecture a similar bound for the higher coefficients.

Free resolutions of some Schubert singularities

In this paper we construct free resolutions of certain class of closed subvarieties of affine spaces (the so-called "opposite big cells" of Grassmannians). Our class covers the determinantal varieties, whose resolutions were first constructed by A. Lascoux (Adv. Math., 1978). Our approach uses the geometry of Schubert varieties. An interesting aspect of our work is its connection to the computation of the cohomology of homogeneous bundles (that are not necessarily completely reducible) on partial flag varieties.

On conjectures of Itoh and of Lipman on the cohomology of normalized blow-ups

Let $(R, \mathfrak{m}, \Bbbk)$ be a Noetherian three-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified ring and $I$ an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary $R$-ideal. Write $X = \mathrm{Proj}\left(\oplus_{n \in \mathbb{N}} \overline{I^n}t^n\right)$. We prove some consequences of the vanishing of $\mathrm{H}^2(X, \mathscr{O}_X)$, whose length equals the the constant term $\bar e_3(I)$ of the normal Hilbert polynomial of $I$. Firstly, $X$ is Cohen-Macaulay. Secondly, if the extended Rees ring $A := \oplus_{n \in \mathbb{Z}} \overline{I^n}t^n$ is not Cohen-Macaulay, and either $R$ is equicharacteristic or $\overline{I} = \mathfrak{m}$, then $\bar e_2(I) - \mathrm{length}_R\left(\frac{\overline{I^2}}{I\overline{I}}\right) \geq 3$; this estimate is proved using Boij-Söderberg theory of coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2_\Bbbk$. The two results above are related to a conjecture of S. Itoh (J. Algebra, 1992). Thirdly, $\mathrm{H}^2_E(X, I^m\mathscr{O}_X) = 0$ for all integers $m$, where $E$ is the exceptional divisor in $X$. Finally, if additionally $R$ is regular and $X$ is pseudo-rational, then the adjoint ideals $\widetilde{I^n}, n \geq 1$ satisfy $\widetilde{I^n} = I\widetilde{I^{n-1}}$ for all $n \geq 3$. The last two results are related to conjectures of J. Lipman (Math. Res. Lett., 1994).

Poset Embeddings of Hilbert functions and Betti numbers

We study inequalities between graded Betti numbers of ideals in a standard graded algebra over a field and their images under embedding maps, defined earlier by us in [Math. Z. 274, (2013), no. 3-4, pp. 809-819; arXiv:1009.4488]. We show that if graded Betti numbers do not decrease when we replace ideals in an algebra by their embedded versions, then the same behaviour is carried over to ring extensions. As a corollary we give alternative inductive proofs of earlier results of Bigatti, Hulett, Pardue, Mermin-Peeva-Stillman and Murai. We extend a hypersurface restriction theorem of Herzog-Popescu to the situation of embeddings. We show that we can obtain the Betti table of an ideal in the extension ring from the Betti table of its embedded version by a sequence of consecutive cancellations. We further show that the lex-plus-powers conjecture of Evans reduces to the Artinian situation.

Betti tables of $p$-Borel-fixed ideals

In this note we provide a counter-example to a conjecture of K. Pardue [Thesis, Brandeis University, 1994.], which asserts that if a monomial ideal is $p$-Borel-fixed, then its $\naturals$-graded Betti table, after passing to any field does not depend on the field. More precisely, we show that, for any monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$ over the ring $\ints$ of integers and for any prime number $p$, there is a $p$-Borel-fixed monomial $S$-ideal $J$ such that a region of the multigraded Betti table of $J(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ is in one-to-one correspondence with the multigraded Betti table of $I(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ for all fields $\ell$ of arbitrary characteristic. There is no analogous statement for Borel-fixed ideals in characteristic zero. Additionally, the construction also shows that there are $p$-Borel-fixed ideals with non-cellular minimal resolutions.

Tensor complexes: Multilinear free resolutions constructed from higher tensors

The most fundamental complexes of free modules over a commutative ring are the Koszul complex, which is constructed from a vector (i.e., a 1-tensor), and the Eagon-Northcott and the Buchsbaum-Rim complexes, which are constructed from a matrix (i.e., a 2-tensor). The subject of this paper is a multilinear analogue of these complexes, which we construct from an arbitrary higher tensor. Our construction provides detailed new examples of minimal free resolutions, as well as a unifying view on a wide variety of complexes including: the Eagon-Northcott, Buchsbaum-Rim and similar complexes, the Eisenbud-Schreyer pure resolutions, and the complexes used by Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky and Weyman to compute hyperdeterminants. In addition, we provide applications to the study of pure resolutions and Boij-Soederberg theory, including the construction of infinitely many new families of pure resolutions and the first explicit description of the differentials of the Eisenbud-Schreyer pure resolutions.

Bounds for the Multiplicity of Gorenstein algebras

We prove upper bounds for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of standard graded Gorenstein algebras. The main tool that we use is Boij-Söderberg theory to obtain a decomposition of the Betti table of a Gorenstein algebra as the sum of rational multiples of symmetrized pure tables. Our bound agrees with the one in the quasi-pure case obtained by Srinivasan [J. Algebra, vol.~208, no.~2, (1998)].

Poset Embeddings of Hilbert Functions

For a standard graded algebra $R$, we consider embeddings of the the poset of Hilbert functions of quotients of $R$ into the poset of ideals of $R$, as a way of classification of Hilbert functions. There are examples of rings for which such embeddings do not exist. We describe how the embedding can be lifted to certain ring extensions, which is then used in the case of polarization and distraction. A version of a theorem of Clements--Lindström is proved. We exhibit a condition on the embedding that ensures that the classification of Hilbert functions is obtained with images of lexicographic segment ideals.

Poset structures in Boij-Söderberg theory

Boij-Söderberg theory is the study of two cones: the cone of cohomology tables of coherent sheaves over projective space and the cone of standard graded minimal free resolutions over a polynomial ring. Each cone has a simplicial fan structure induced by a partial order on its extremal rays. We provide a new interpretation of these partial orders in terms of the existence of nonzero homomorphisms, for both the general and the equivariant constructions. These results provide new insights into the families of sheaves and modules at the heart of Boij-Söderberg theory: supernatural sheaves and Cohen-Macaulay modules with pure resolutions. In addition, our results strongly suggest the naturality of these partial orders, and they provide tools for extending Boij-Söderberg theory to other graded rings and projective varieties.

Shapes of free resolutions over a local ring

We classify the possible shapes of minimal free resolutions over a regular local ring. This illustrates the existence of free resolutions whose Betti numbers behave in surprisingly pathological ways. We also give an asymptotic characterization of the possible shapes of minimal free resolutions over hypersurface rings. Our key new technique uses asymptotic arguments to study formal Q-Betti sequences.

Dependence of Betti Numbers on Characteristic

We study the dependence of graded Betti numbers of monomial ideals on the characteristic of the base field. The examples we describe include bipartite ideals, Stanley--Reisner ideals of vertex-decomposable complexes and ideals with componentwise linear resolutions. We give a description of bipartite graphs and, using discrete Morse theory, provide a way of looking at the homology of arbitrary simplicial complexes through bipartite ideals. We also prove that the Betti table of a monomial ideal over the field of rational numbers can be obtained from the Betti table over any field by a sequence of consecutive cancellations.

Étale cohomological dimension, a conjecture of Lyubeznik and bounds for arithmetic rank

We produce a criterion for open sets in projective $n$-space over a separably closed field to have étale cohomological dimension bounded by $2n-3$. We use the criterion to exhibit a scheme for which étale cohomological dimension is smaller than what a conjecture of G.~Lyubeznik predicts; the discrepancy is of arithmetic nature. For a monomial ideal, we relate extremal graded Betti numbers and étale cohomological dimension of the complement of the corresponding subspace arrangement. Moreover, we derive upper bounds for its arithmetic rank in terms of invariants distilled from the lcm-lattice.

Regularity, Depth and Arithmetic Rank of Bipartite Edge Ideals

We study minimal free resolutions of edge ideals of bipartite graphs. We associate a directed graph to a bipartite graph whose edge ideal is unmixed, and give expressions for the regularity and the depth of the edge ideal in terms of invariants of the directed graph. For some classes of unmixed edge ideals, we show that the arithmetic rank of the ideal equals projective dimension of its quotient.

$d$-Regular graphs of acyclic chromatic index at least $d+2$

An $acyclic$ edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic cycles. The \emph{acyclic chromatic index} of a graph is the minimum number k such that there is an acyclic edge coloring using k colors and is denoted by $a'(G)$. It was conjectured by Alon, Sudakov and Zaks (and earlier by Fiamcik) that $a'(G)\le Δ+2$, where $Δ=Δ(G)$ denotes the maximum degree of the graph. Alon et.al also raised the question whether the complete graphs of even order are the only regular graphs which require $Δ+2$ colors to be acyclically edge colored. In this paper, using a simple counting argument we observe not only that this is not true, but infact all d-regular graphs with $2n$ vertices and $d > n$, requires at least $d+2$ colors. We also show that $a'(K_{n,n}) \ge n+2$, when $n$ is odd using a more non-trivial argument(Here $K_{n,n}$ denotes the complete bipartite graph with $n$ vertices on each side). This lower bound for $K_{n,n}$ can be shown to be tight for some families of complete bipartite graphs and for small values of $n$. We also infer that for every $d,n$ such that $d \ge 5$, $n \ge 2d + 3$ and $dn$ even, there exist $d$-regular graphs which require at least $d+2$-colors to be acyclically edge colored.

Some Ideals with Large Projective Dimension

For an ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over a field, a monomial support of $I$ is the set of monomials that appear as terms in a set of minimal generators of $I$. Craig Huneke asked whether the size of a monomial support is a bound for the projective dimension of the ideal. We construct an example to show that, if the number of variables and the degrees of the generators are unspecified, the projective dimension of $I$ grows at least exponentially with the size of a monomial support. The ideal we construct is generated by monomials and binomials.
