Syzygies in Hilbert schemes of complete intersections

Let $ e_1, ..., e_c $ be positive integers and let $ Y \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ be the monomial complete intersection defined by the vanishing of $x_1^{e_1}, ..., x_c^{e_c}$. In this paper we study sharp upper bounds on the number of equations and syzygies of subschemes parametrized by the Hilbert scheme of points $Hilb^d(Y)$, and discuss applications to the Hilbert scheme of points $Hilb^d(X)$ of arbitrary complete intersections $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$.

Explicit Stillman bounds for all degrees

In 2016 Ananyan and Hochster proved Stillman's conjecture by showing the existence of a uniform upper bound for the projective dimension of all homogeneous ideals, in polynomial rings over a field, generated by n forms of degree at most d. Explicit values of the bounds for forms of degrees 5 and higher are not yet known. The main result of this article is the construction of explicit such bounds, for all degrees d, which behave like power towers of height d^3/6+11d/6-4. This is done by establishing a bound D(k,d), which controls the number of generators of a minimal prime over an ideal of a regular sequence of k or fewer forms of degree d, and supplementing it into Ananyan and Hochster's proof in order to obtain a recurrence relation.

Poset Embeddings of Hilbert functions and Betti numbers

We study inequalities between graded Betti numbers of ideals in a standard graded algebra over a field and their images under embedding maps, defined earlier by us in [Math. Z. 274, (2013), no. 3-4, pp. 809-819; arXiv:1009.4488]. We show that if graded Betti numbers do not decrease when we replace ideals in an algebra by their embedded versions, then the same behaviour is carried over to ring extensions. As a corollary we give alternative inductive proofs of earlier results of Bigatti, Hulett, Pardue, Mermin-Peeva-Stillman and Murai. We extend a hypersurface restriction theorem of Herzog-Popescu to the situation of embeddings. We show that we can obtain the Betti table of an ideal in the extension ring from the Betti table of its embedded version by a sequence of consecutive cancellations. We further show that the lex-plus-powers conjecture of Evans reduces to the Artinian situation.

Zero-generic initial ideals

Given a homogeneous ideal I of a polynomial ring A=K[X_1,...,X_n] and a monomial order, we construct a new monomial ideal of A associated with I. We call it the zero-generic initial ideal of I with respect to the order and denote it with gin_0(I), or with Gin_0(I) whenever the order is the reverse-lexicographic order. When the characteristic of K is zero, a zero-generic initial ideal is the usual generic initial ideal. We show that Gin_0(I) is endowed with many interesting properties, some of which are easily seen, e.g., it is a strongly stable monomial ideal in any characteristic, and has the same Hilbert series as I; some other properties are less obvious: it shares with I the same Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, projective dimension and extremal Betti numbers. Quite surprisingly, gin_0(I) also satisfies Green's Crystallization Principle, which is known to fail in positive characteristic. Thus, zero-generic initial ideals can be used as formal analogues of generic initial ideals computed in characteristic 0. We also prove the analogue for local cohomology of Pardue's Conjecture for Betti numbers: we show that the Hilbert functions of local cohomology modules of a quotient ring of a polynomial ring modulo a weakly stable ideal are independent of the characteristic of the coefficients field.

Betti tables of $p$-Borel-fixed ideals

In this note we provide a counter-example to a conjecture of K. Pardue [Thesis, Brandeis University, 1994.], which asserts that if a monomial ideal is $p$-Borel-fixed, then its $\naturals$-graded Betti table, after passing to any field does not depend on the field. More precisely, we show that, for any monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$ over the ring $\ints$ of integers and for any prime number $p$, there is a $p$-Borel-fixed monomial $S$-ideal $J$ such that a region of the multigraded Betti table of $J(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ is in one-to-one correspondence with the multigraded Betti table of $I(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ for all fields $\ell$ of arbitrary characteristic. There is no analogous statement for Borel-fixed ideals in characteristic zero. Additionally, the construction also shows that there are $p$-Borel-fixed ideals with non-cellular minimal resolutions.

Componentwise regularity (I)

We define the notion of componentwise regularity and study some of its basic properties. We prove an analogue, when working with weight orders, of Buchberger's criterion to compute Gröbner bases; the proof of our criterion relies on a strengthening of a lifting lemma of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud. This criterion helps us to show a stronger version of Green's crystallization theorem in a quite general setting, according to the componentwise regularity of the initial object. Finally we show a necessary condition, given a submodule $M$ of a free one over the polynomial ring and a weight such that $in(M)$ is componentwise linear, for the existence of an $i$ such that $β_i(M)=β_i(in(M))$.

Distractions of Shakin rings

We study, by means of embeddings of Hilbert functions, a class of rings which we call Shakin rings, i.e. quotients K[X_1,...,X_n]/a of a polynomial ring over a field K by ideals a=L+P which are the sum of a piecewise lex-segment ideal L, as defined by Shakin, and a pure powers ideal P. Our main results extend Abedelfatah's recent work on the Eisenbud-Green-Harris conjecture, Shakin's generalization of Macaulay and Bigatti-Hulett-Pardue theorems on Betti numbers and, when char(K)=0, Mermin-Murai theorem on the Lex-Plus-Power inequality, from monomial regular sequences to a larger class of ideals. We also prove an extremality property of embeddings induced by distractions in terms of Hilbert functions of local cohomology modules.

Generic circuits sets and general initial ideals with respect to weights

We study the set of circuits of a homogeneous ideal and that of its truncations, and introduce the notion of generic circuits set. We show how this is a well-defined invariant that can be used, in the case of initial ideals with respect to weights, as a counterpart of the (usual) generic initial ideal with respect to monomial orders. As an application we recover the existence of the generic fan introduced by Römer and Schmitz for studying generic tropical varieties. We also consider general initial ideals with respect to weights and show, in analogy to the fact that generic initial ideals are Borel-fixed, that these are fixed under the action of certain Borel subgroups of the general linear group.

The lex-plus-power inequality for local cohomology modules

We prove an inequality between Hilbert functions of local cohomology modules supported in the homogeneous maximal ideal of standard graded algebras over a field, within the framework of embeddings of posets of Hilbert functions. As a main application, we prove an analogue for local cohomology of Evans' Lex-Plus-Power Conjecture for Betti numbers. This results implies some cases of the classical Lex-Plus-Power Conjecture, namely an inequality between extremal Betti numbers. In particular, for the classes of ideals for which the Eisenbud-Green-Harris Conjecture is currently known, the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a graded ideal do not decrease by passing to the corresponding Lex-Plus-Power ideal.

Koszul property of projections of the Veronese cubic surface

Let V be the Veronese cubic surface in P^9. We classify the projections of V to P^8 whose coordinate rings are Koszul. In particular we obtain a purely theoretical proof of the Koszulness of the pinched Veronese, a result obtained originally by Caviglia using filtrations, deformations and computer assisted computations. To this purpose we extend, to certain complete intersections, results of Conca, Herzog, Trung and Valla concerning homological properties of diagonal algebras.

Poset Embeddings of Hilbert Functions

For a standard graded algebra $R$, we consider embeddings of the the poset of Hilbert functions of quotients of $R$ into the poset of ideals of $R$, as a way of classification of Hilbert functions. There are examples of rings for which such embeddings do not exist. We describe how the embedding can be lifted to certain ring extensions, which is then used in the case of polarization and distraction. A version of a theorem of Clements--Lindström is proved. We exhibit a condition on the embedding that ensures that the classification of Hilbert functions is obtained with images of lexicographic segment ideals.

Some Ideals with Large Projective Dimension

For an ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over a field, a monomial support of $I$ is the set of monomials that appear as terms in a set of minimal generators of $I$. Craig Huneke asked whether the size of a monomial support is a bound for the projective dimension of the ideal. We construct an example to show that, if the number of variables and the degrees of the generators are unspecified, the projective dimension of $I$ grows at least exponentially with the size of a monomial support. The ideal we construct is generated by monomials and binomials.
