Crystal and magnetic structure of antiferromagnetic Mn$_{2}$PtPd

We have investigated the crystal and magnetic structure of Mn${}_{2}$PtPd alloy using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction experiments. This compound is believed to belong to the Heusler family having crystal symmetry $\mathit{I}$4/$\mathit{mmm}$ (TiAl${}_{3}$-type). However, in this work we found that the Pd and Pt atoms are disordered and thus Mn${}_{2}$PtPd crystallizes in the $\mathit{L}$1${}_{0}$ structure having $\mathit{P}$4/$\mathit{mmm}$ symmetry (CuAu-I type) like MnPt and MnPd binary alloys. The lattice constants are $\mathit{a}$ = 2.86 Å and $\mathit{c}$ = 3.62 Å at room temperature. Mn${}_{2}$PtPd has a collinear antiferromagnetic spin structure below the Néel temperature $\mathit{T}$${}_{N}$ = 866 K, where Mn moments of $\mathrm{\sim}$4 $μ$${}_{B}$ lie in the $\mathit{ab}$-plane. We observed a strong change in the lattice parameters near $\mathit{T}$${}_{N}$. The sample exhibits metallic behaviour, where electrical resistivity and carrier concentration are of the order of 10${}^{-5}$ $Ω$ cm and 10${}^{21}$ cm${}^{-3}$, respectively.

Detection of antiskyrmions by topological Hall effect in Heusler compounds

Heusler compounds having $\textit{D}$${}_{2d}$ crystal symmetry gained much attention recently due to the stabilization of a vortex-like spin texture called antiskyrmions in thin lamellae of Mn${}_{1.4}$Pt${}_{0.9}$Pd${}_{0.1}$Sn as reported in the work of Nayak $\textit{et al.}$ [Nature (London) 548, 561 (2017)]. Here we show that bulk Mn${}_{1.4}$Pt${}_{0.9}$Pd${}_{0.1}$Sn undergoes a spin-reorientation transition from a collinear ferromagnetic to a noncollinear configuration of Mn moments below 135 K, which is accompanied by the emergence of a topological Hall effect. We tune the topological Hall effect in Pd and Rh substituted Mn${}_{1.4}$PtSn Heusler compounds by changing the intrinsic magnetic properties and spin textures. A unique feature of the present system is the observation of a zero-field topological Hall resistivity with a sign change which indicates the robust formation of antiskyrmions.

Lattice-site-specific spin-dynamics in double perovskite Sr2CoOsO6

We have studied the magnetic properties and spin-dynamics of the structurally-ordered double perovskite Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$. Our neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and ac-susceptibility measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases on cooling from room temperature down to 2 K. In the first AFM phase, with transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}=108$ K, cobalt (3$d^7$, $S=3/2$) and osmium (5$d^2$, $S=1$) moments fluctuate dynamically, while their \textit{average} effective moments undergo long-range order. In the second AFM phase with $T_{\mathrm{N}}=67$ K, cobalt moments first become frozen and induce a noncollinear spin-canted AFM state, while dynamically fluctuating osmium moments are later frozen into a randomly canted state at $T\approx 5$ K. Our \textit{ab initio} calculations indicate that the effective exchange coupling between cobalt and osmium sites is rather weak, so that cobalt and osmium sublattices exhibit different ground states and spin-dynamics, making Sr$_2$CoOsO$_6$ distinct from previously reported double-perovskite compounds.

Lattice Instability and Competing Spin Structures in the Double Perovskite Insulator Sr2FeOsO6

The semiconductor Sr2FeOsO6, depending on temperature, adopts two types of spin structures that differ in the spin sequence of ferrimagnetic iron - osmium layers along the tetragonal c-axis. Neutron powder diffraction experiments, 57Fe Mössbauer spectra, and density-functional theory calculations suggest that this behavior arises because a lattice instability resulting in alternating iron-osmium distances fine-tunes the balance of competing exchange interactions. Thus, Sr2FeOsO6 is an example for a double perovskite, in which the electronic phases are controlled by the interplay of spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Physical Properties of Sr2FeOsO6

In the exploration of new osmium based double perovskites, Sr2FeOsO6 is a new insertion in the existing family. The polycrystalline compound has been prepared by solid state synthesis from the respective binary oxides. PXRD analysis shows the structure is pseudo-cubic at room temperature, whereas low-temperature synchrotron data refinements reveal the structure to be tetragonal, space group I4/m. Heat capacity and magnetic measurements of Sr2FeOsO6 indicated the presence of two magnetic phase transitions at T1 = 140 K and T2 = 67 K. Band structure calculations showed the compound as a narrow energy gap semiconductor, which supports the experimental results obtained from the resistivity measurements. The present study documents significant structural and electronic effects of substituting Fe3+ for Cr3+ ion in Sr2CrOsO6.

Spin and Orbital Order of the Vanadium Spinel MgV2O4

We present a unique study of the frustrated spinel MgV2O4 which possesses highly coupled spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom. Using large single-crystal and powder samples, we find a distortion from spinel at room temperature (space group F-43m) which allows for a greater trigonal distortion of the VO6 octahedra and a low temperature space group (I-4m2) that maintains the mirror plane symmetry. The magnetic structure that develops below 42 K consists of antiferromagnetic chains with a strongly reduced moment while inelastic neutron scattering reveals one-dimensional behavior and a single band of excitations. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of various orbital ordering scenarios. We conclude that although spin-orbit coupling must be significant to maintain the mirror plane symmetry, the trigonal distortion is large enough to mix the 3d levels leading to a wave function of mixed real and complex orbitals.

Magnetic Structure and Interactions in the Quasi-1D Antiferromagnet CaV$_2$O$_4$

CaV$_2$O$_4$ is a spin-1 antiferromagnet, where the magnetic vanadium ions are arranged on quasi-one-dimensional (1D) zig-zag chains with potentially frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. High temperature susceptibility and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements are used to deduce the non-collinear magnetic structure, dominant exchange interactions and orbital configurations. The results suggest that at high temperatures CaV$_2$O$_4$ behaves as a Haldane chain, but at low temperatures, orbital ordering lifts the frustration and it becomes a spin-1 ladder.
