Limit theorems for linear random fields with innovations in the domain of attraction of a stable law

In this paper we study the convergence in distribution and the local limit theorem for the partial sums of linear random fields with i.i.d. innovations that have infinite second moment and belong to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $0<α\leq2$ under the condition that the innovations are centered if $1<α\leq2$ and are symmetric if $α=1$. We establish these two types of limit theorems as long as the linear random fields are well-defined, the coefficients are either absolutely summable or not absolutely summable.

On the invariance principle for reversible Markov chains

In this paper, we investigate the functional central limit theorem for stochastic processes associated to partial sums of additive functionals of reversible Markov chains with general spate space, under the normalization standard deviation of partial sums. For this case, we show that the functional central limit theorem is equivalent to the fact that the variance of partial sums is regularly varying with exponent 1 and the partial sums satisfy the CLT. It is also equivalent to the conditional CLT.

On the local limit theorems for lower psi-mixing Markov chains

In this paper we investigate the local limit theorem for additive functionals of nonstationary Markov chains that converge in distribution. We consider both the lattice and the non-lattice cases. The results are also new in the stationary setting and lead to local limit theorems linked to convergence to stable distributions. The conditions are imposed to individual summands and are expressed in terms of lower psi-mixing coefficients.

A Local Limit Theorem for Linear Random Fields

In this paper, we establish a local limit theorem for linear fields of random variables constructed from independent and identically distributed innovations each with finite second moment. When the coefficients are absolutely summable we do not restrict the region of summation. However, when the coefficients are only square-summable we add the variables on unions of rectangle and we impose regularity conditions on the coefficients depending on the number of rectangles considered. Our results are new also for the dimension 1, i.e. for linear sequences of random variables. The examples include the fractionally integrated processes for which the results of a simulation study is also included.

A new CLT for additive functionals of Markov chains

In this paper we study the central limit theorem for additive functionals of stationary Markov chains with general state space by using a new idea involving conditioning with respect to both the past and future of the chain. Practically, we show that any additive functionals of a stationary and totally ergodic Markov chain with the variance of S_n divided by n uniformly bounded, satisfies a square root central limit theorem with a random centering. We do not assume that the Markov chain is irreducible and aperiodic. However, the random centering is not needed if the Markov chain satisfies stronger forms of ergodicity. In absence an ergodicity the convergence in distribution still holds, but the limiting distribution might not be normal.

On the CLT of additive functionals of Markov chains

In this paper we study the additive functionals of Markov chains via conditioning with respect to both past and future of the chain. We shall point out new sufficient projective conditions, which assure that the variance of partial sums of n consecutive random variables of a stationary Markov chain is linear in n. The paper also addresses the central limit theorem problem and is listing several open questions.

On the functional CLT for stationary Markov Chains started at a point

We present a general functional central limit theorem started at a point also known under the name of quenched. As a consequence, we point out several new classes of stationary processes, defined via projection conditions, which satisfy this type of asymptotic result. One of the theorems shows that if a Markov chain is stationary ergodic and reversible, this result holds for bounded additive functionals of the chain which have a martingale coboundary in L_1 representation. Our results are also well adapted for strongly mixing sequences providing for this case an alternative, shorter approach to some recent results in the literature.

Quenched limit theorems for Fourier transforms and periodogram

In this paper, we study the quenched central limit theorem for the discrete Fourier transform. We show that the Fourier transform of a stationary ergodic process, suitable centered and normalized, satisfies the quenched CLT conditioned by the past sigma algebra. For functions of Markov chains with stationary transitions, this means that the CLT holds with respect to the law of the chain started at a point for almost all starting points. It is necessary to emphasize that no assumption of irreducibility with respect to a measure or other regularity conditions are imposed for this result. We also discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of quenched CLT without centering. The results are highly relevant for the study of the periodogram of a Markov process with stationary transitions which does not start from equilibrium. The proofs are based of a nice blend of harmonic analysis, theory of stationary processes, martingale approximation and ergodic theory.

The limiting spectral distribution in terms of spectral density

For a large class of symmetric random matrices with correlated entries, selected from stationary random fields of centered and square integrable variables, we show that the limiting distribution of eigenvalue counting measure always exists and we describe it via an equation satisfied by its Stieltjes transform. No rate of convergence to zero of correlations is imposed, therefore the process is allowed to have long memory. In particular, if the symmetrized matrices are constructed from stationary Gaussian random fields which have spectral density, the result of this paper gives a complete solution to the limiting eigenvalue distribution. More generally, for matrices whose entries are functions of independent identically distributed random variables the result also holds.

Asymptotic variance of stationary reversible and normal Markov processes

We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the regular variation of the variance of partial sums of functionals of discrete and continuous-time stationary Markov processes with normal transition operators. We also construct a class of Metropolis-Hastings algorithms which satisfy a central limit theorem and invariance principle when the variance is not linear in $n$.

On the empirical spectral distribution for matrices with long memory and independent rows

In this paper we show that the empirical eigenvalue distribution of any sample covariance matrix generated by independent copies of a stationary regular sequence has a limiting distribution depending only on the spectral density of the sequence. We characterize this limit in terms of Stieltjes transform via a certain simple equation. No rate of convergence to zero of the covariances is imposed. If the entries of the stationary sequence are functions of independent random variables the result holds without any other additional assumptions. As a method of proof, we study the empirical eigenvalue distribution for a symmetric matrix with independent rows below the diagonal; the entries satisfy a Lindeberg-type condition along with mixingale-type conditions without rates. In this nonstationary setting we point out a property of universality, meaning that, for large matrix size, the empirical eigenvalue distribution depends only on the covariance structure of the sequence and is independent on the distribution leading to it. These results have interest in themselves, allowing to study symmetric random matrices generated by random processes with both short and long memory.

On the limiting spectral distribution for a large class of random matrices with correlated entries

For symmetric random matrices with correlated entries, which are functions of independent random variables, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the empirical eigenvalue distribution can be obtained by analyzing a Gaussian matrix with the same covariance structure. This class contains both cases of short and long range dependent random fields. The technique is based on a blend of blocking procedure and Lindeberg's method. This method leads to a variety of interesting asymptotic results for matrices with dependent entries, including applications to linear processes as well as nonlinear Volterra-type processes entries.

preprint2014arXiv

On the universality of spectral limit for random matrices with martingale differences entries

For a class of symmetric random matrices whose entries are martingale differences adapted to an increasing filtration, we prove that under a Lindeberg-like condition, the empirical spectral distribution behaves asymptotically similarly to a corresponding matrix with independent centered Gaussian entries having the same variances. Under a slightly reinforced condition, the approximation holds in the almost sure sense. We also point out several sufficient regularity conditions imposed to the variance structure for convergence to the semicircle law or the Marchenko-Pastur law and other convergence results. In the stationary case we obtain a full extension from the i.i.d. case to the martingale case of the convergence to the semicircle law as well as to the Marchenko-Pastur one. Our results are well adapted to study several examples including non linear ARCH infinite random fields.

Exact Moderate and Large Deviations for Linear Processes

Large and moderate deviation probabilities play an important role in many applied areas, such as insurance and risk analysis. This paper studies the exact moderate and large deviation asymptotics in non-logarithmic form for linear processes with independent innovations. The linear processes we analyze are general and therefore they include the long memory case. We give an asymptotic representation for probability of the tail of the normalized sums and specify the zones in which it can be approximated either by a standard normal distribution or by the marginal distribution of the innovation process. The results are then applied to regression estimates, moving averages, fractionally integrated processes, linear processes with regularly varying exponents and functions of linear processes. We also consider the computation of value at risk and expected shortfall, fundamental quantities in risk theory and finance.

On Functional CLT for Reversible Markov Chains with nonlinear growth of the Variance

In this paper we study the functional central limit theorem for stationary Markov chains with self-adjoint operator and general state space. We investigate the case when the variance of the partial sum is not asymptotically linear in n; and establish that conditional convergence in distribution of partial sums implies functional CLT. The main tools are maximal inequalities that are further exploited to derive conditions for tightness and convergence to the Brownian motion.

Quenched Invariance Principles via Martingale Approximation

In this paper we survey the almost sure central limit theorem and its functional form (quenched) for stationary and ergodic processes. For additive functionals of a stationary and ergodic Markov chain these theorems are known under the terminology of central limit theorem and its functional form, started at a point. All these results have in common that they are obtained via a martingale approximation in the almost sure sense. We point out several applications of these results to classes of mixing sequences, shift processes, reversible Markov chains, Metropolis Hastings algorithms.

Reflexive Operator Algebras on Banach Spaces

In this paper we study the reflexivity of a unital strongly closed algebra of operators with complemented invariant subspace lattice on a Banach space. We prove that if such an algebra contains a complete Boolean algebra of projections of finite uniform multiplicity and with the direct sum property, then it is reflexive, i.e. it contains every operator that leaves invariant every closed subspace in the invariant subspace lattice of the algebra. In particular, such algebras coincide with their bicommutant.

Rosenthal-type inequalities for the maximum of partial sums of stationary processes and examples

The aim of this paper is to propose new Rosenthal-type inequalities for moments of order higher than 2 of the maximum of partial sums of stationary sequences including martingales and their generalizations. As in the recent results by Peligrad et al. [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 135 (2007) 541-550] and Rio [J. Theoret. Probab. 22 (2009) 146-163], the estimates of the moments are expressed in terms of the norms of projections of partial sums. The proofs of the results are essentially based on a new maximal inequality generalizing the Doob maximal inequality for martingales and dyadic induction. Various applications are also provided.

Asymptotic properties for linear processes of functionals of reversible Markov Chains

In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of linear processes having as innovations mean zero, square integrable functions of stationary reversible Markov chains. In doing so we shall preserve the generality of coefficients assuming only that they are square summable. In this way we include in our study the long range dependence case. The only assumption imposed on the innovations is the absolute summability of their covariances. Besides the central limit theorem we also study the convergence to fractional Brownian motion. The proofs are based on general results for linear processes with stationary innovations that have interest in themselves.

Bernstein inequality and moderate deviations under strong mixing conditions

In this paper we obtain a Bernstein type inequality for a class of weakly dependent and bounded random variables. The proofs lead to a moderate deviations principle for sums of bounded random variables with exponential decay of the strong mixing coeficients that complements the large deviation result obtained by Bryc and Dembo (1998) under superexponential mixing rates.

Law of the iterated logarithm for the periodogram

We consider the almost sure asymptotic behavior of the periodogram of stationary and ergodic sequences. Under mild conditions we establish that the limsup of the periodogram properly normalized identifies almost surely the spectral density function associated with the stationary process. Results for a specified frequency are also given. Our results also lead to the law of the iterated logarithm for the real and imaginary part of the discrete Fourier transform. The proofs rely on martingale approximations combined with results from harmonic analysis and technics from ergodic theory. Several applications to linear processes and their functionals, iterated random functions, mixing structures and Markov chains are also presented.

Some Aspects of Modeling Dependence in Copula-based Markov chains

Dependence coefficients have been widely studied for Markov processes defined by a set of transition probabilities and an initial distribution. This work clarifies some aspects of the theory of dependence structure of Markov chains generated by copulas that are useful in time series econometrics and other applied fields. The main aim of this paper is to clarify the relationship between the notions of geometric ergodicity and geometric ρ-mixing; namely, to point out that for a large number of well known copulas, such as Clayton, Gumbel or Student, these notions are equivalent. Some of the results published in the last years appear to be redundant if one takes into account this fact. We apply this equivalence to show that any mixture of Clayton, Gumbel or Student copulas generate both geometrically ergodic and geometric ρ-mixing stationary Markov chains, answering in this way an open question in the literature. We shall also point out that a sufficient condition for ρ-mixing, used in the literature, actually implies Doeblin recurrence.

Almost Sure Invariance Principles via Martingale Approximation

In this paper we estimate the rest of the approximation of a stationary process by a martingale in terms of the projections of partial sums. Then, based on this estimate, we obtain almost sure approximation of partial sums by a martingale with stationary differences. The results are exploited to further investigate the central limit theorem and its invariance principle started at a point, as well as the law of the iterated logarithm via almost sure approximation with a Brownian motion, improving the results available in the literature. The conditions are well suited for a variety of examples; they are easy to verify, for instance, for linear processes and functions of Bernoulli shifts.

Asymptotic Properties of Self-Normalized Linear Processes with Long Memory

In this paper we study the convergence to fractional Brownian motion for long memory time series having independent innovations with infinite second moment. For the sake of applications we derive the self-normalized version of this theorem. The study is motivated by models arising in economical applications where often the linear processes have long memory, and the innovations have heavy tails.

Central Limit Theorem for Linear Processes with Infinite Variance

This paper addresses the following classical question: giving a sequence of identically distributed random variables in the domain of attraction of a normal law, does the associated linear process satisfy the central limit theorem? We study the question for several classes of dependent random variables. For independent and identically distributed random variables we show that the central limit theorem for the linear process is equivalent to the fact that the variables are in the domain of attraction of a normal law, answering in this way an open problem in the literature. The study is also motivated by models arising in economic applications where often the innovations have infinite variance, coefficients are not absolutely summable, and the innovations are dependent.

Central limit theorem for triangular arrays of Non-Homogeneous Markov chains

In this paper we obtain the central limit theorem for triangular arrays of non-homogeneous Markov chains under a condition imposed to the maximal coefficient of correlation. The proofs are based on martingale techniques and a sharp lower bound estimate for the variance of partial sums. The results complement an important central limit theorem of Dobrushin based on the contraction coefficient.

Conditional central limit theorem via martingale approximation

In this paper we survey and further study partial sums of a stationary process via approximation with a martingale with stationary differences. Such an approximation is useful for transferring from the martingale to the original process the conditional central limit theorem. We study both approximations in L_2 and in L_1. The results complement the work of Dedecker Merlevede and Volny (2007), Zhao and Woodroofe (2008), Gordin and Peligrad (2009). The method provides an unitary treatment of many limiting results for dependent random variables including classes of mixing sequences, additive functionals of Markov chains and linear processes.

Invariance principles for linear processes with application to isotonic regression

In this paper, we prove maximal inequalities and study the functional central limit theorem for the partial sums of linear processes generated by dependent innovations. Due to the general weights, these processes can exhibit long-range dependence and the limiting distribution is a fractional Brownian motion. The proofs are based on new approximations by a linear process with martingale difference innovations. The results are then applied to study an estimator of the isotonic regression when the error process is a (possibly long-range dependent) time series.

On the functional central limit theorem via martingale approximation

In this paper, we develop necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of a martingale approximation for the partial sums of a stationary process in terms of the maximum of consecutive errors. Such an approximation is useful for transferring the conditional functional central limit theorem from the martingale to the original process. The condition found is simple and well adapted to a variety of examples, leading to a better understanding of the structure of several stochastic processes and their asymptotic behaviors. The approximation brings together many disparate examples in probability theory. It is valid for classes of variables defined by familiar projection conditions such as the Maxwell--Woodroofe condition, various classes of mixing processes, including the large class of strongly mixing processes, and for additive functionals of Markov chains with normal or symmetric Markov operators.

Central limit theorem for Fourier transforms of stationary processes

We consider asymptotic behavior of Fourier transforms of stationary ergodic sequences with finite second moments. We establish a central limit theorem (CLT) for almost all frequencies and also an annealed CLT. The theorems hold for all regular sequences. Our results shed new light on the foundation of spectral analysis and on the asymptotic distribution of periodogram, and it provides a nice blend of harmonic analysis, theory of stationary processes and theory of martingales.
