The inner kernel theorem for a certain Segal algebra

The Segal algebra $\mathbf{S}_{0}(G)$ is well defined for arbitrary locally compact Abelian Hausdorff (LCA) groups $G$. It is a Banach space that exhibits a kernel theorem similar to the well-known Schwartz kernel theorem. Specifically, we call this characterization of the continuous linear operators from $\mathbf{S}_{0}(G_{1})$ to $\mathbf{S}'_{0}(G_{2})$ by generalized functions in $\mathbf{S}'_{0}(G_{1} \times G_{2})$ the "outer kernel theorem". The main subject of this paper is to formulate what we call the "inner kernel theorem". This is the characterization of those linear operators that have kernels in $\mathbf{S}_{0}(G_{1} \times G_{2})$. Such operators are regularizing -- in the sense that they map $\mathbf{S}'_{0}(G_{1})$ into $\mathbf{S}_{0}(G_{2})$ in a $w^{*}$ to norm continuous manner. A detailed functional analytic treatment of these operators is given and applied to the case of general LCA groups. This is done without the use of Wilson bases, which have previously been employed for the case of elementary LCA groups. We apply our approach to describe natural laws of composition for operators that imitate those of linear mappings via matrix multiplications. Furthermore, we detail how these operators approximate general operators (in a weak form). As a concrete example, we derive the widespread statement of engineers and physicists that pure frequencies "integrate" to a Dirac delta distribution in a mathematically justifiable way.

Duality of Gabor frames and Heisenberg modules

Given a locally compact abelian group $G$ and a closed subgroup $Λ$ in $G\times\widehat{G}$, Rieffel associated to $Λ$ a Hilbert $C^*$-module $\mathcal{E}$, known as a Heisenberg module. He proved that $\mathcal{E}$ is an equivalence bimodule between the twisted group $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ,\textsf{c})$ and $C^*(Λ^\circ,\bar{\textsf{c}})$, where $Λ^{\circ}$ denotes the adjoint subgroup of $Λ$. Our main goal is to study Heisenberg modules using tools from time-frequency analysis and pointing out that Heisenberg modules provide the natural setting of the duality theory of Gabor systems. More concretely, we show that the Feichtinger algebra ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(G)$ is an equivalence bimodule between the Banach subalgebras ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(Λ,\textsf{c})$ and ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(Λ^{\circ},\bar{\textsf{c}})$ of $C^*(Λ,\textsf{c})$ and $C^*(Λ^\circ,\bar{\textsf{c}})$, respectively. Further, we prove that ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(G)$ is finitely generated and projective exactly for co-compact closed subgroups $Λ$. In this case the generators $g_1,\ldots,g_n$ of the left ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(Λ)$-module ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(G)$ are the Gabor atoms of a multi-window Gabor frame for $L^2(G)$. We prove that this is equivalent to $g_1,\ldots,g_n$ being a Gabor super frame for the closed subspace generated by the Gabor system for $Λ^{\circ}$. This duality principle is of independent interest and is also studied for infinitely many Gabor atoms. We also show that for any non-rational lattice $Λ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2m}$ with volume ${s}(Λ)<1$ there exists a Gabor frame generated by a single atom in ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(\mathbb{R}^m)$.
