$τ$-quantization and $τ$-Cohen classes distributions of Feichtinger operators

We investigate the $τ$-quantizations and Cohen's class distributions of a suitable class of trace-class operators, called Feichtinger's operators, and show that it is a convenient substitute for the class of Schwartz operators. Many well-known concepts and results for functions in time-frequency analysis have an operator-analog in our setting, e.g. that Cohen's classes are convolutions of Wigner functions with distributions or characterization of the class of Schwartz operators as an intersection of weighted variants of the class of Feichtinger operators.

Yang-Mills connections and sigma-models on quantum Heisenberg manifolds

We construct a spectral triple on a quantum Heisenberg manifold, which generalizes the results of Chakraborty and Shinha, and associate to it an energy functional on the set of projections, following the approach of Mathai-Rosenberg to non-linear sigma models. The spectral triples that we construct extend the We derive a lower bound for this energy functional that is linked on the topological charge of the projection which depends on the curvature of a compatible connection. A detailed study of this lower bound is given for the Kang projection in quantum Heisenberg manifolds. These results display an intriguing interplay between non-linear sigma models and Yang-Mills theory on quantum Heisenberg manifolds, unlike in the well-studied case of noncommutative tori.

Affine Quantum Harmonic Analysis

We develop a quantum harmonic analysis framework for the affine group. This encapsulates several examples in the literature such as affine localization operators, covariant integral quantizations, and affine quadratic time-frequency representations. In the process, we develop a notion of admissibility for operators and extend well known results to the operator setting. A major theme of the paper is the interaction between operator convolutions, affine Weyl quantization, and admissibility.

Duality of Gabor frames and Heisenberg modules

Given a locally compact abelian group $G$ and a closed subgroup $Λ$ in $G\times\widehat{G}$, Rieffel associated to $Λ$ a Hilbert $C^*$-module $\mathcal{E}$, known as a Heisenberg module. He proved that $\mathcal{E}$ is an equivalence bimodule between the twisted group $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ,\textsf{c})$ and $C^*(Λ^\circ,\bar{\textsf{c}})$, where $Λ^{\circ}$ denotes the adjoint subgroup of $Λ$. Our main goal is to study Heisenberg modules using tools from time-frequency analysis and pointing out that Heisenberg modules provide the natural setting of the duality theory of Gabor systems. More concretely, we show that the Feichtinger algebra ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(G)$ is an equivalence bimodule between the Banach subalgebras ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(Λ,\textsf{c})$ and ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(Λ^{\circ},\bar{\textsf{c}})$ of $C^*(Λ,\textsf{c})$ and $C^*(Λ^\circ,\bar{\textsf{c}})$, respectively. Further, we prove that ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(G)$ is finitely generated and projective exactly for co-compact closed subgroups $Λ$. In this case the generators $g_1,\ldots,g_n$ of the left ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(Λ)$-module ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(G)$ are the Gabor atoms of a multi-window Gabor frame for $L^2(G)$. We prove that this is equivalent to $g_1,\ldots,g_n$ being a Gabor super frame for the closed subspace generated by the Gabor system for $Λ^{\circ}$. This duality principle is of independent interest and is also studied for infinitely many Gabor atoms. We also show that for any non-rational lattice $Λ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2m}$ with volume ${s}(Λ)<1$ there exists a Gabor frame generated by a single atom in ${\textbf{S}}_{0}(\mathbb{R}^m)$.

Sigma-model solitons on noncommutative spaces

We use results from time-frequency analysis and Gabor analysis to construct new classes of sigma-model solitons over the Moyal plane and over noncommutative tori, taken as source spaces, with a target space made of two points. A natural action functional leads to self-duality equations for projections in the source algebra. Solutions, having non-trivial topological content, are constructed via suitable Morita duality bimodules.

A pseudo-differential calculus on non-standard symplectic space; spectral and regularity results in modulation spaces

The usual Weyl calculus is intimately associated with the choice of the standard symplectic structure on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\oplus\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In this paper we will show that the replacement of this structure by an arbitrary symplectic structure leads to a pseudo-differential calculus of operators acting on functions or distributions defined, not on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ but rather on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\oplus\mathbb{R}^{n}$. These operators are intertwined with the standard Weyl pseudo-differential operators using an infinite family of partial isometries of $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\longrightarrow L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$ \ indexed by $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. This allows us obtain spectral and regularity results for our operators using Shubin's symbol classes and Feichtinger's modulation spaces.

Quantum mechanics in phase space: The Schrödinger and the Moyal representations

We present a phase space formulation of quantum mechanics in the Schrödinger representation and derive the associated Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. We prove that the resulting theory is unitarily equivalent to the standard "configuration space" formulation and show that it allows for a uniform treatment of both pure and mixed quantum states. In the second part of the paper we determine the unitary transformation (and its infinitesimal generator) that maps the phase space Schrödinger representation into another (called Moyal) representation, where the wave function is the cross-Wigner function familiar from deformation quantization. Some features of this representation are studied, namely the associated pseudo-differential calculus and the main spectral and dynamical results. Finally, the relation with deformation quantization is discussed.

Preferred Quantization Rules: Born-Jordan vs. Weyl: the Pseudo-Differential Point of View

There has recently been evidence for replacing the usual Weyl quantization procedure by the older and much less known Born-Jordan rule. In this paper we discuss this quantization procedure in detail and relate it to recent results of Boggiato, De Donno, and Oliaro on the Cohen class. We begin with a discussion of some properties of Shubin's $τ$-pseudo-differential calculus, which allows us to show that the Born-Jordan quantization of a symbol $a$ is the average for $τ\in\lbrack0,1]$ of the $τ$-operators with symbol $a$. We study the properties of the Born-Jordan operators, including their symplectic covariance, and give their Weyl symbol.

Projections in noncommutative tori and Gabor frames

We describe a connection between two seemingly different problems: (a) the construction of projections in noncommutative tori, (b) the construction of tight Gabor frames. The present investigation relies an interpretation of projective modules over noncommutative tori in terms of Gabor analysis. The main result demonstrates that Rieffel's condition on the existence of projections in noncommutative tori is equivalent to the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality relations for tight Gabor frames. Therefore we are able to invoke results on the existence of Gabor frames in the construction of projections in noncommutative tori. In particular, the projection associated with a Gabor frame generated by a Gaussian turns out to be Boca's projection. Our approach to Boca's projection allows us to characterize the range of existence of Boca's projection. The presentation of our main result provides a natural approach to the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality relations in terms of Hilbert C*-modules over noncommutative tori.

On the Usefulness of Modulation Spaces in Deformation Quantization

We discuss the relevance to deformation quantization of Feichtinger's modulation spaces, especially of the weighted Sjoestrand classes. These function spaces are good classes of symbols of pseudo-differential operators (observables). They have a widespread use in time-frequency analysis and related topics, but are not very well-known in physics. It turns out that they are particularly well adapted to the study of the Moyal star-product and of the star-exponential.

Projective modules over noncommutative tori are multi-window Gabor frames for modulation spaces

In the present investigation we are linking noncommutative geometry over noncommutative tori with Gabor analysis, where the first has its roots in operator algebras and the second in time-frequency analysis. Therefore we are in the position to invoke modern methods of operator algebras, e.g. topological stable rank of Banach algebras, to exploit the deeper properties of Gabor frames. Furthermore we are able to extend results due to Connes and Rieffel on projective modules over noncommutative tori to Banach algebras, which arise in a natural manner in Gabor analysis. The main goal of this investigation is twofold: (i) an interpretation of projective modules over noncommutative tori in terms of Gabor analysis and (ii) that the Morita-Rieffel equivalence between noncommutative tori is the natural framework for the duality theory of Gabor frames. More concretely, we interpret generators of projective modules over noncommutative tori as the Gabor atoms of multi-window Gabor frames for modulation spaces. Moreover, we show that this implies the {\it existence} of good multi-window Gabor frames for modulation spaces with Gabor atoms in Feichtinger's algebra and in Schwartz space.
