New measurement of double beta decays of 100^{100}Mo to excited states of 100^{100}Ru with the CUPID-Mo experiment

The CUPID-Mo experiment, located at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator experiment for CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 Li2100_2^{100}MoO4_4 (LMO) calorimeters each equipped with a Ge light detector (LD) for particle identification. In this work, we present the result of a search for two-neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decays of 100^{100}Mo to the first 0+^+ and 2+2^+ excited states of 100^{100}Ru using the full CUPID-Mo exposure (2.71 kg×\timesyr of LMO). We measure the half-life of 2νββ2νββ decay to the 01+0^{+}_1 state as T1/22ν→01+=7.5±0.8 (stat.) −0.3+0.4 (syst.))×1020 yrT_{1/2}^{2ν\rightarrow 0_1^+}=7.5\pm 0.8 \ \text{(stat.)} \ ^{+ 0.4}_{-0.3} \ \text{(syst.)} )\times 10^{20} \ \mathrm{yr}. The bolometric technique enables measurement of the electron energies as well as the gamma rays from nuclear de-excitation and this allows us to set new limits on the two-neutrino decay to the 21+2_1^+ state of $T^{2ν\rightarrow 2_1^+}_{1/2}>4.4\times 10^{21} \ \mathrm{yr} \ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$ and on the neutrinoless modes of $T_{1/2}^{0ν\rightarrow 2_1^+}>2.1\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$, $T_{1/2}^{0ν\rightarrow 0_1^+}>1.2\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$. Information on the electrons spectral shape is obtained which allows us to make the first comparison of the single state (SSD) and higher state (HSD) 2νββ2νββ decay models for the 01+0_1^+ excited state of 100^{100}Ru.

Specific Heat of the Kagome Antiferromagnet Herbertsmithite in High Magnetic Fields

Measuring the specific heat of herbertsmithite single crystals in high magnetic fields (up to 3434 T) allows us to isolate the low-temperature kagome contribution while shifting away extrinsic Schottky-like contributions. The kagome contribution follows an original power law Cp(T→0)∝TαC_{p}(T\rightarrow0)\propto T^α with α∼1.5α\sim1.5 and is found field-independent between 2828 and 3434 T for temperatures 1≤T≤41\leq T\leq4 K. These are serious constrains when it comes to replication using low-temperature extrapolations of high-temperature series expansions. We manage to reproduce the experimental observations if about 1010 % of the kagome sites do not contribute. Between 00 and 3434 T, the computed specific heat has a minute field dependence then supporting an algebraic temperature dependence in zero field, typical of a critical spin liquid ground state. The need for an effective dilution of the kagome planes is discussed and is likely linked to the presence of copper ions on the interplane zinc sites. At very low temperatures and moderate fields, we also report some small field-induced anomalies in the total specific heat and start to elaborate a phase diagram.

First data from the CUPID-Mo neutrinoless double beta decay experiment

The CUPID-Mo experiment is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay in 100^{100}Mo, evaluating the technology of cryogenic scintillating Li2100_{2}^{100}MoO4_4 detectors for CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle ID). CUPID-Mo detectors feature background suppression using a dual-readout scheme with Li2_{2}MoO4_4 crystals complemented by Ge bolometers for light detection. The detection of both heat and scintillation light signals allows the efficient discrimination of αα from γγ&ββ events. In this proceedings, we discuss results from the first 2 months of data taking in spring 2019. In addition to an excellent bolometric performance of 6.7 \,keV (FWHM) at 2615 \,keV and an αα separation of better than 99.9\% for all detectors, we report on bulk radiopurity for Th and U. Finally, we interpret the accumulated physics data in terms of a limit of T1/20ν >3×1023 T_{1/2}^{0ν}\,> 3\times10^{23}\,yr for 100^{100}Mo and discuss the sensitivity of CUPID-Mo until the expected end of physics data taking in early 2020.

First results on sub-GeV spin-dependent dark matter interactions with 7^{7}Li

In this work, we want to highlight the potential of lithium as a target for spin-dependent dark matter search in cryogenic experiments, with a special focus on the low-mass region of the parameter space. We operated a prototype detector module based on a Li2_2MoO4_4 target crystal in an above-ground laboratory. Despite the high background environment, the detector sets competitive limits on spin-dependent interactions of dark matter particles with protons and neutrons for masses between 0.8 GeV/c2^2 and 1.5 GeV/c2^2.

Precise measurement of 2νββ2νββ decay of 100^{100}Mo with the CUPID-Mo detection technology

We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta (2νββ2νββ) decay of 100^{100}Mo to the ground state of 100^{100}Ru using lithium molybdate (\crystal) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory. From a total exposure of 42.23542.235 kg×\timesd, the half-life of 100^{100}Mo is determined to be T1/22ν=[7.12−0.14+0.18 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.)]×1018T_{1/2}^{2ν}=[7.12^{+0.18}_{-0.14}\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.10\,\mathrm{(syst.)}]\times10^{18} years. This is the most accurate determination of the 2νββ2νββ half-life of 100^{100}Mo to date. We also confirm, with the statistical significance of >3σ>3σ, that the single-state dominance model of the 2νββ2νββ decay of 100^{100}Mo is favored over the high-state dominance model.

The CUPID-Mo experiment for neutrinoless double-beta decay: performance and prospects

CUPID-Mo is a bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ0νββ) of 100^{100}Mo. In this article, we detail the CUPID-Mo detector concept, assembly, installation in the underground laboratory in Modane in 2018, and provide results from the first datasets. The demonstrator consists of an array of 20 scintillating bolometers comprised of 100^{100}Mo-enriched 0.2 kg Li2_2MoO4_4 crystals. The detectors are complemented by 20 thin cryogenic Ge bolometers acting as light detectors to distinguish αα from γγ/ββ events by the detection of both heat and scintillation light signals. We observe good detector uniformity, facilitating the operation of a large detector array as well as excellent energy resolution of 5.3 keV (6.5 keV) FWHM at 2615 keV, in calibration (physics) data. Based on the observed energy resolutions and light yields a separation of αα particles at much better than 99.9\% with equally high acceptance for γγ/ββ events is expected for events in the region of interest for 100^{100}Mo 0νββ0νββ. We present limits on the crystals' radiopurity (≤\leq3 μμBq/kg of 226^{226}Ra and ≤\leq2 μμBq/kg of 232^{232}Th). Based on these initial results we also discuss a sensitivity study for the science reach of the CUPID-Mo experiment, in particular, the ability to set the most stringent half-life limit on the 100^{100}Mo 0νββ0νββ decay after half a year of livetime. The achieved results show that CUPID-Mo is a successful demonstrator of the technology - developed in the framework of the LUMINEU project - selected for the CUPID experiment, a proposed follow-up of CUORE, the currently running first tonne-scale cryogenic 0νββ0νββ experiment.
