Experimental evidence for Zeeman spin-orbit coupling in layered antiferromagnetic conductors

Most of solid-state spin physics arising from spin-orbit coupling, from fundamental phenomena to industrial applications, relies on symmetry-protected degeneracies. So does the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling, expected to manifest itself in a wide range of antiferromagnetic conductors. Yet, experimental proof of this phenomenon has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate that the Néel state of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeBr$_4$ shows no spin modulation of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, contrary to its paramagnetic state. This is unambiguous evidence for the spin degeneracy of Landau levels, a direct manifestation of the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling. Likewise, we show that spin modulation is absent in electron-doped Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$, which evidences the presence of Néel order in this cuprate superconductor even at optimal doping. Obtained on two very different materials, our results demonstrate the generic character of the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling.

Magnetic Torque in k-(BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3

Peculiarities observed in the field dependencies of the magnetic torque in k-(BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3 measured at T=1.5K, H=0-150kOe, have been explained from the viewpoint of the two interacting spin subsystems, one associated with d-electron spins of Mn2+ residing in the anion layer, and the other with the spins of pi-electrons which localize below the metal-insulator transition temperature, T_MI=25K, forming a long-range antiferromagnetic structure. The principal axes of the Mn2+ spin subsystem have been defined. A model of antiferromagnetic pi-spin arrangement has been suggested that associates the observed kinks in the torque H-dependencies with a spin-reorientation transition. One of the observed effects is ascribed to the pi-d interaction between the two spin subsystems.

Correlation between Fermi surface transformations and superconductivity in the electron-doped high-$T_c$ superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

Two critical points have been revealed in the normal-state phase diagram of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ by exploring the Fermi surface properties of high quality single crystals by high-field magnetotransport. First, the quantitative analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect shows that the weak superlattice potential responsible for the Fermi surface reconstruction in the overdoped regime extrapolates to zero at the doping level $x_c = 0.175$ corresponding to the onset of superconductivity. Second, the high-field Hall coefficient exhibits a sharp drop right below optimal doping $x_{\mathrm{opt}} = 0.145$ where the superconducting transition temperature is maximum. This drop is most likely caused by the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. Thus, the superconducting dome appears to be pinned by two critical points to the normal state phase diagram.

Magnetic quantum oscillations in the charge-density-wave state of the organic metals $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$ with M = K and Tl

The low-temperature charge-density-wave (CDW) state in the layered organic metals $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$ has been studied by means of the Shubnikov -- de Haas and de Haas -- van Alphen effects. In addition to the dominant alpha-frequency, which is also observed in the normal state, both the magnetoresistance and magnetic torque possess a slowly oscillating component. These slow oscillations provide a firm evidence for the CDW-induced reconstruction of the original cylindrical Fermi surface. The alpha-oscillations of the interlayer magnetoresistance exhibit an anomalous phase inversion in the CDW state, whereas the de Haas -- van Alphen signal maintains the normal phase. We argue that the anomaly may be attributed to the magnetic-breakdown origin of the alpha-oscillations in the CDW state. A theoretical model illustrating the possibility of a phase inversion in the oscillating interlayer conductivity in the presence of a spatially fluctuating magnetic breakdown gap is proposed.

Magnetic-field-induced dimensional crossover in the organic metal $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$KHg(SCN)$_{4}$

The field dependence of interlayer magnetoresistance of the pressurized (to the normal state) layered organic metal $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$KHg(SCN)$_{4}$ is investigated. The high quasi-two-dimensional anisotropy, when the interlayer hopping time is longer than the electron mean-free time and than the cyclotron period, leads to a dimensional crossover and to strong violations of the conventional three-dimensional theory of magnetoresistance. The monotonic field dependence is found to change from the conventional behavior at low magnetic fields to an anomalous one at high fields. The shape of Landau levels, determined from the damping of magnetic quantum oscillations, changes from Lorentzian to Gaussian. This indicates the change of electron dynamics in the disorder potential from the usual coherent three-dimensional regime to a new regime, which can be referred to as weakly coherent.

Staggered Spin Order of Localized pi-electrons in the Insulating State of the Organic Conductor kappa-BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3

Magnetic properties of the conduction pi-electron system of kappa-BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3 have been probed using 13C NMR. At ambient pressure, the metal-insulator transition observed in the resistivity measurements below T~23K is shown to be accompanied by ordering of the pi-spins in a long-range staggered structure. As the metal-insulator transition is suppressed by applying a small pressure of ~0.5 kbar, the pi-spin system maintains the properties of the metallic state down to 5K.

Fermi Surface of the Electron-doped Cuprate Superconductor Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4} Probed by High-Field Magnetotransport

We report on the study of the Fermi surface of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4}$ by measuring the interlayer magnetoresistance as a function of the strength and orientation of the applied magnetic field. We performed experiments in both steady and pulsed magnetic fields on high-quality single crystals with Ce concentrations of $x=0.13$ to 0.17. In the overdoped regime of $x > 0.15$ we found both semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations. The combined AMRO and SdH data clearly show that the appearance of fast SdH oscillations in strongly overdoped samples is caused by magnetic breakdown. This observation provides clear evidence for a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface up to the very end of the overdoped regime at $x\simeq 0.17$. The strength of the superlattice potential responsible for the reconstructed Fermi surface is found to decrease with increasing doping level and likely vanishes at the same carrier concentration as superconductivity, suggesting a close relation between translational symmetry breaking and superconducting pairing. A detailed analysis of the high-resolution SdH data allowed us to determine the effective cyclotron mass and Dingle temperature, as well as to estimate the magnetic breakdown field in the overdoped regime.

Magnetic Breakdown in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$: the reconstructed Fermi surface survives in the strongly overdoped regime

We report on semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in the electron-overdoped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. Our data provide convincing evidence for magnetic breakdown in the system. This shows that a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface persists, at least at strong magnetic fields, up to the highest doping level of the superconducting regime. Our results suggest an intimate relation between translational symmetry breaking and the superconducting pairing in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors.

Magnetic Transformations in the Organic Conductor kappa-(BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3 at the Metal-Insulator Transition

A complex study of magnetic properties including dc magnetization, 1H NMR and magnetic torque measurements has been performed for the organic conductor kappa-(BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3 which undergoes a metal-insulator transition at T_MI~25K. NMR and the magnetization data indicate a transition in the manganese subsystem from paramagnetic to a frozen state at T_MI, which is, however, not a simple Neel type order. Further, a magnetic field induced transition resembling a spin flop has been detected in the torque measurements at temperatures below T_MI. This transition is most likely related to the spins of pi-electrons localized on the organic molecules BETS and coupled with the manganese 3d spins via exchange interaction.

Superconductivity in the charge-density-wave state of the organic metal α-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4

The superconducting transition in the layered organic compound α-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 has been studied in the two hydrostatic pressure regimes where a charge-density wave is either present or completely suppressed. Within the charge-density-wave state the experimental results reveal a network of weakly coupled superconducting regions. This is especially seen in a strong enhancement of the measured critical field and the corresponding positive curvature of its temperature dependence. Further, it is shown that on lowering the pressure into the density-wave state traces of a superconducting phase already start to appear at a much higher temperature.

Orbital quantization in the high magnetic field state of a charge-density-wave system

A superposition of the Pauli and orbital coupling of a high magnetic field to charge carriers in a charge-density-wave (CDW) system is proposed to give rise to transitions between subphases with quantized values of the CDW wavevector. By contrast to the purely orbital field-induced density-wave effects which require a strongly imperfect nesting of the Fermi surface, the new transitions can occur even if the Fermi surface is well nested at zero field. We suggest that such transitions are observed in the organic metal $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ under a strongly tilted magnetic field.

Slow oscillations of magnetoresistance in quasi-two-dimensional metals

Slow oscillations of the interlayer magnetoresistance observed in the layered organic metal $β$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$IBr$_2$ are shown to originate from the slight warping of its Fermi surface rather than from independent small cyclotron orbits. Unlike the usual Shubnikov-de Haas effect, these oscillations are not affected by the temperature smearing of the Fermi distribution and can therefore become dominant at high enough temperatures. We suggest that the slow oscillations are a general feature of clean quasi-two-dimensional metals and discuss possible applications of the phenomenon.

Magnetic field - temperature phase diagram of the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4

We present systematic magnetic torque studies of the ``magnetic field - temperature'' phase diagram of the layered organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4 at fields nearly perpendicular and nearly parallel to the highly conducting plane. The shape of the phase diagram is compared to that predicted for a charge-density-wave system in a broad field range.
