Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with 9-eV photon-energy pulses generated in a gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

A recently developed source of ultraviolet radiation, based on optical soliton propagation in a gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, is applied here to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Near-infrared femtosecond pulses of only few μJ energy generate vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation between 5.5 and 9 eV inside the gas-filled fiber. These pulses are used to measure the band structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 with a signal to noise ratio comparable to that obtained with high order harmonics from a gas jet. The two-order-of-magnitude gain in efficiency promises time-resolved ARPES measurements at repetition rates of hundreds of kHz or even MHz, with photon energies that cover the first Brillouin zone of most materials.

Interplanetary spacecraft navigation using pulsars

We demonstrate how observations of pulsars can be used to help navigate a spacecraft travelling in the solar system. We make use of archival observations of millisecond pulsars from the Parkes radio telescope in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method and highlight issues, such as pulsar spin irregularities, which need to be accounted for. We show that observations of four millisecond pulsars every seven days using a realistic X-ray telescope on the spacecraft throughout a journey from Earth to Mars can lead to position determinations better than approx. 20km and velocity measurements with a precision of approx. 0.1m/s.

Zb(10650)Z_b(10650) and Zb(10610)Z_b(10610) states in a chiral quark model

We perform a systematic study of BBˉ∗B\bar{B}^*, B∗Bˉ∗B^*\bar{B}^*, DDˉ∗D\bar{D}^* and D∗Dˉ∗D^*\bar{D}^* systems by using effective interaction in our chiral quark model. Our results show that the interactions of BBˉ∗B\bar{B}^*, B∗Bˉ∗B^*\bar{B}^*, DDˉ∗D\bar{D}^* and D∗Dˉ∗D^*\bar{D}^* states are attractive, which consequently result in BBˉ∗B\bar{B}^*, B∗Bˉ∗B^*\bar{B}^*, DDˉ∗D\bar{D}^* and D∗Dˉ∗D^*\bar{D}^* bound states. The recent observed exotic-like hadrons of Zb(10610)Z_b(10610) and Zb(10650)Z_b(10650) are, therefore in our approach, interpreted as loosely bound states of BBˉ∗B\bar{B}^* and B∗Bˉ∗B^*\bar{B}^*, while X(3872) and Y(3940) are DDˉ∗D\bar{D}^* and D∗Dˉ∗D^*\bar{D}^* molecule states, respectively.

Possible DDˉD\bar{D} and BBˉB\bar{B} Molecular states in a chiral quark model

We perform a systematic study of the bound state problem of DDˉD\bar{D} and BBˉB\bar{B} systems by using effective interaction in our chiral quark model. Our results show that both the interactions of DDˉD\bar{D} and BBˉB\bar{B} states are attractive, which consequently result in IG(JPC)=0+(0++)I^G(J^{PC})=0^+(0^{++}) DDˉD\bar{D} and BBˉB\bar{B} bound states.
