A Cautionary Tale of LyC Escape Fraction Estimates from High Redshift Galaxies

Measuring the escape fraction, $f_{\rm esc}$, of ionizing, Lyman Continuum (LyC) radiation is key to our understanding of the process of cosmic reionization. In this paper we provide a methodology for recovering the posterior probability distribution of the LyC escape fraction, $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm PDF}$, considering both the observational uncertainties and ensembles of simulated transmission functions through the intergalactic medium (IGM). We present an example of this method applied to a VUDS galaxy at $z=3.64$ and find $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm PDF}$ = 0.51$^{+0.33}_{-0.34}$ and compare this to the values computed assuming averaged IGM transmission with and without consideration of detection bias along average sightlines yielding $f_{\rm esc}^{\langle T \rangle}$ = 1.40$^{+0.80}_{-0.42}$, and $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm bias}$ = 0.82$^{+0.33}_{-0.16}$. Our results highlight the limitations of methods assuming average, smooth transmission functions. We also present MOSFIRE data for a sample of seven LyC candidates selected based on photometric redshifts at $z > 3.4$, but find that all seven have overestimated photometric redshifts by $Δz \sim 0.2$ making them unsuitable for LyC measurements. This results likely due to a bias induced by our selection criteria.

Bulk-like magnetic properties in MBE-grown unstrained, antiferromagnetic CuMnSb

A detailed study of the influence of molecular beam epitaxial growth conditions on the structural and magnetic characteristics of CuMnSb films on lattice matched GaSb is presented. For a set of nine 40~nm thick layers, the Mn and Sb fluxes are varied to produce material with different elemental compositions. It is found that the layers grown under a relative Mn to Sb flux ratio of $Φ_{\text{Mn}}$/$Φ_{\text{Sb}}=1.24\pm0.02$ are closest to the stoichiometric composition, for which the Néel temperature ($T_\text{N}$) attains its maximum values. Mn-related structural defects are believed to be the driving contribution to changes in the vertical lattice parameter. Having established the optimum growth conditions, a second set of samples with CuMnSb layer thickness varied from 5 to 510 nm is fabricated. We show that for sufficiently large thicknesses, the magnetic characteristics ($T_\text{N}\simeq62$ K, Curie-Weiss temperature $Θ_\text{CW} = -100$ K) of the stoichiometric layers do correspond to the parameters reported for bulk samples. On the other hand, we observe a reduction of $T_\text{N}$ as a function of the CuMnSb thickness for our thinnest layers. All findings reported here are of particular relevance for studies aiming at the demonstration of Néel vector switching and detection in this noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet, which have been recently proposed.

COSMOS2020: A panchromatic view of the Universe to $z\sim10$ from two complementary catalogs

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) has become a cornerstone of extragalactic astronomy. Since the last public catalog in 2015, a wealth of new imaging and spectroscopic data has been collected in the COSMOS field. This paper describes the collection, processing, and analysis of this new imaging data to produce a new reference photometric redshift catalog. Source detection and multi-wavelength photometry is performed for 1.7 million sources across the $2\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ of the COSMOS field, $\sim$966,000 of which are measured with all available broad-band data using both traditional aperture photometric methods and a new profile-fitting photometric extraction tool, The Farmer, which we have developed. A detailed comparison of the two resulting photometric catalogs is presented. Photometric redshifts are computed for all sources in each catalog utilizing two independent photometric redshift codes. Finally, a comparison is made between the performance of the photometric methodologies and of the redshift codes to demonstrate an exceptional degree of self-consistency in the resulting photometric redshifts. The $i<21$ sources have sub-percent photometric redshift accuracy and even the faintest sources at $25<i<27$ reach a precision of $5\,\%$. Finally, these results are discussed in the context of previous, current, and future surveys in the COSMOS field. Compared to COSMOS2015, reaches the same photometric redshift precision at almost one magnitude deeper. Both photometric catalogs and their photometric redshift solutions and physical parameters will be made available through the usual astronomical archive systems (ESO Phase 3, IPAC IRSA, and CDS).

Out-of-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy in Ordered Ensembles of Fe$_y$N Nanocrystals Embedded in GaN

Phase-separated semiconductors containing magnetic nanostructures are relevant systems for the realization of high-density recording media. Here, the controlled strain engineering of Ga$δ$FeN layers with Fe$_y$N embedded nanocrystals (NCs) \textit{via} Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N buffers with different Al concentration $0<x_\mathrm{Al}<41$\% is presented. Through the addition of Al to the buffer, the formation of predominantly prolate-shaped $\varepsilon$-Fe$_3$N NCs takes place. Already at an Al concentration $x_\mathrm{Al}$\,$\approx$\,5\% the structural properties---phase, shape, orientation---as well as the spatial distribution of the embedded NCs are modified in comparison to those grown on a GaN buffer. Although the magnetic easy axis of the cubic $γ$'-Ga$_y$Fe$_{4-y}$N nanocrystals in the layer on the $x_\mathrm{Al} = 0\%$ buffer lies in-plane, the easy axis of the $\varepsilon$-Fe$_3$N NCs in all samples with Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N buffers coincides with the $[0001]$ growth direction, leading to a sizeable out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and opening wide perspectives for perpendicular recording based on nitride-based magnetic nanocrystals.

Outside the Lyman-break box: detecting Lyman continuum emitters at $3.5<z<5.1$ with CLAUDS

Identifying non-contaminated sample of high-redshift galaxies with escaping Lyman continuum (LyC) flux is important for understanding the sources and evolution of cosmic reionization. We present CLAUDS $u$-band photometry of the COSMOS field to probe LyC radiation from spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at $z\geq3.5$ and outside the standard Lyman-break galaxy colour selection expectations. Complementary to the CLAUDS data, we use Subaru multi-filter photometry, \textit {Hubble Space Telescope} ($HST$) multi-filter imaging, and the spectroscopic surveys D10K, VUDS and 3D-HST. We present a sample of Lyman continuum galaxy (LCG) candidates in the redshift range $3.5\lesssim z\lesssim5.1$. Here, we introduce 5 LCG candidates, where two are flagged quality 1 and three quality 2. The estimated $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$ for quality 1 candidates are in the range $\sim5\% - 73\%$ and $\sim30\% - 93\%$. These estimates are based on our derived parameters from individual galaxies as inputs to a range of BPASS models as well as mean intergalactic medium (IGM) and maximal intergalactic and circumgalactic media (IGM+CGM) transmission. We conclude that our search for LCGs is most likely biased to lines of sight with low HI densities or free from Lyman limit systems. Our two best LCG candidates have EW (Ly$α)\leq50$Å and we find no correlation or anti-correlation between EW (Ly$α$), $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$, and $R_{\rm obs}$, the ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing observed flux in the measured passbands. Stacking candidates without solid LyC detections ($S/N<3$) results in an estimated $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$ from galaxies not greater than $1\%$.

S2COSMOS: Evolution of Gas Mass with Redshift Using Dust Emission

We investigate the evolution of the gas mass fraction for galaxies in the COSMOS field using submillimetre emission from dust at 850$μ$m. We use stacking methodologies on the 850$μ$m S2COSMOS map to derive the gas mass fraction of galaxies out to high redshifts, 0 <= $z$ <= 5, for galaxies with stellar masses of $10^{9.5} < M_* (\rm M_{\odot}) < 10^{11.75}$. In comparison to previous literature studies we extend to higher redshifts, include more normal star-forming galaxies (on the main sequence), and also investigate the evolution of the gas mass fraction split by star-forming and passive galaxy populations. We find our stacking results broadly agree with scaling relations in the literature. We find tentative evidence for a peak in the gas mass fraction of galaxies at around $z$ ~ 2.5-3, just before the peak of the star formation history of the Universe. We find that passive galaxies are particularly devoid of gas, compared to the star-forming population. We find that even at high redshifts, high stellar mass galaxies still contain significant amounts of gas.

The East Asian Observatory SCUBA--2 survey of the COSMOS field: unveiling 1147 bright sub-millimeter sources across 2.6 square degrees

We present sensitive 850$μ$m imaging of the COSMOS field using 640hr of new and archival observations taken with SCUBA-2 at the East Asian Observatory's James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The SCUBA-2 COSMOS survey (S2COSMOS) achieves a median noise level of $σ_{850μ{\mathrm{m}}}$=1.2mJy/beam over an area of 1.6 sq. degree (MAIN; HST/ACS footprint), and $σ_{850μ{\mathrm{m}}}$=1.7mJy/beam over an additional 1 sq. degree of supplementary (SUPP) coverage. We present a catalogue of 1020 and 127 sources detected at a significance level of >4$σ$ and >4.3$σ$ in the MAIN and SUPP regions, respectively, corresponding to a uniform 2% false-detection rate. We construct the single-dish 850$μ$m number counts at $S_{850}$>2mJy and show that these S2COSMOS counts are in agreement with previous single-dish surveys, demonstrating that degree-scale fields are sufficient to overcome the effects of cosmic variance in the $S_{850}$=2-10mJy population. To investigate the properties of the galaxies identified by S2COSMOS sources we measure the surface density of near-infrared-selected galaxies around their positions and identify an average excess of 2.0$\pm$0.2 galaxies within a 13$''$ radius (~100kpc at $z$~2). The bulk of these galaxies represent near-infrared-selected SMGs and/or spatially-correlated sources and lie at a median photometric redshift of $z$=2.0$\pm$0.1. Finally, we perform a stacking analysis at sub-millimeter and far-infrared wavelengths of stellar-mass-selected galaxies ($M_{\star}$=10$^{10}$-10$^{12}{\rm M_{\odot}}$) from $z$=0-4, obtaining high-significance detections at 850um in all subsets (SNR=4-30), and investigate the relation between far-infrared luminosity, stellar mass, and the peak wavelength of the dust SED. The publication of this survey adds a new deep, uniform sub-millimeter layer to the wavelength coverage of this well-studied COSMOS field.

Magnetotransport in phase-separated (Ga,Fe)N with $γ$'-Ga$_y$Fe$_{4-y}$N nanocrystals

The magnetotransport in phase-separated (Ga,Fe)N containing $γ$'-Ga$_y$Fe$_{4-y}$N (0\,$<$\,y\,$<$1) nanocrystals (NCs) is studied in the temperature range between 2\,K and 300\,K. The evolution of the resistivity and of the magnetoresistance (MR) as a function of temperature points at two conduction mechanisms: namely a conventional Arrhenius-type one down to 50\,K, and Mott variable range hopping at lower temperatures, where the spin-polarized current is transported between NCs in a regime in which phonon-scattering effects are not dominant. Below 25\,K, the MR shows a hysteretic contribution at magnetic fields $<$1\,T and proportional to the coercive field. Anisotropic magnetoresistance with values one order of magnitude greater than those previously reported for $γ$'-Fe$_4$N thin films over the whole considered temperature range, confirms that the observed MR in these layers is determined by the embedded nanocrystals.

Stretching magnetism with an electric field in a nitride semiconductor

By direct magnetization measurements, performed employing a new detection scheme, we demonstrate an electrical control of magnetization in wurtzite (Ga,Mn)N. In this dilute magnetic insulator the Fermi energy is pinned by Mn ions in the mid-gap region, and the Mn3+ ions show strong single-ion anisotropy. We establish that (Ga,Mn)N sustains an electric field up to at least 5 MV/cm, indicating that Mn doping turns GaN into a worthwhile semi-insulating material. Under these conditions, the magnetoelectric coupling may be driven by the inverse piezoelectric effect that stretches the elementary cell along the c axis and, thus, affects the magnitude of magnetic anisotropy. We develop a corresponding theory and show that it describes the experimentally determined dependence of magnetization on the electric field quantitatively with no adjustable parameters as a function of the magnetic field and temperature. In this way, our work bridges two research domains developed so far independently: piezoelectricity of wurtzite semiconductors and electrical control of magnetization in hybrid and composite magnetic structures containing piezoelectric components.

Experimental determination of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in wurtzite $n$-GaN:Si

Millikelvin magnetotransport studies are carried out on heavily $n$-doped wurtzite GaN:Si films grown on semi-insulating GaN:Mn buffer layers by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The dependency of the conductivity on magnetic field and temperature is interpreted in terms of theories that take into account disorder-induced quantum interference of one-electron and many-electron self-crossing trajectories. The Rashba parameter $α_{\text{R}}\,=\,(4.5 \pm 1)$ meV$Å$ is determined, and it is shown that in the previous studies of electrons adjacent to GaN/(Al,Ga)N interfaces, bulk inversion asymmetry was dominant over structural inversion asymmetry. The comparison of experimental and theoretical values of $α_{\text{R}}$ across a series of wurtzite semiconductors is presented as a test of current relativistic ab initio computation schemes. It is found that electron-electron scattering with small energy transfer accounts for low temperature decoherence in these systems.

Relation between exciton splittings, magnetic circular dichroism, and magnetization in wurtzite (Ga,Fe)N

The question of the correlation between magnetization, band splittings, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the fundamental gap region of dilute magnetic semiconductors is examined experimentally and theoretically taking the case of wurtzite Ga(1-x)FexN as an example. Magnetization and polarization-resolved reflectivity measurements have been performed down to 2K and up to 7T for x = 0.2%. Optical transitions originating from all three free excitons A, B and C, specific to the wurtzite structure, have been observed and their evolution with the magnetic field determined. It is demonstrated that the magnitude of the exciton splittings evaluated from reflectivity-MCD data can be overestimated by more than a factor of 2, as compared to the values obtained by describing the polarization-resolved reflectivity spectra with appropriate dielectric functions. A series of model calculations shows that the quantitative inaccuracy of MCD originates from a substantial influence of the magnetization-dependent exchange interactions not only on the spin splittings of excitons but also upon their linewidth and oscillator strength. At the same time, a method is proposed that allows to evaluate the field and temperature dependencies of the magnetization from MCD spectra. The accurate values of the excitonic splittings and of the magnetization reported here substantiate the magnitudes of the apparent $sp-d$ exchange integrals in (Ga,Fe)N previously determined.

The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. XV. The photometric redshift estimation for background sources

The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey is an optical imaging survey covering 104 deg^2 centered on the Virgo cluster. Currently, the complete survey area has been observed in the u*giz-bands and one third in the r-band. We present the photometric redshift estimation for the NGVS background sources. After a dedicated data reduction, we perform accurate photometry, with special attention to precise color measurements through point spread function-homogenization. We then estimate the photometric redshifts with the Le Phare and BPZ codes. We add a new prior which extends to iAB = 12.5 mag. When using the u*griz-bands, our photometric redshifts for 15.5 \le i \lesssim 23 mag or zphot \lesssim 1 galaxies have a bias |Δz| < 0.02, less than 5% outliers, and a scatter σ_{outl.rej.} and an individual error on zphot that increase with magnitude (from 0.02 to 0.05 and from 0.03 to 0.10, respectively). When using the u*giz-bands over the same magnitude and redshift range, the lack of the r-band increases the uncertainties in the 0.3 \lesssim zphot \lesssim 0.8 range (-0.05 < Δz < -0.02, σ_{outl.rej} ~ 0.06, 10-15% outliers, and zphot.err. ~ 0.15). We also present a joint analysis of the photometric redshift accuracy as a function of redshift and magnitude. We assess the quality of our photometric redshifts by comparison to spectroscopic samples and by verifying that the angular auto- and cross-correlation function w(θ) of the entire NGVS photometric redshift sample across redshift bins is in agreement with the expectations.

Upper bound for the s-d exchange integral in n-(Ga,Mn)N:Si from magnetotransport studies

A series of recent magnetooptical studies pointed to contradicting values of the s-d exchange energy N0α in Mn-doped GaAs and GaN as well as in Fe-doped GaN. Here, a strong sensitivity of weak-localization phenomena to symmetry breaking perturbations (such as spin-splitting and spin-disorder scattering) is exploited to evaluate the magnitude of N0α for n-type wurtzite (Ga,Mn)N:Si films grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Millikelvin magnetoresistance studies and their quantitative interpretation point to N0α < 40 meV, a value at least 5 times smaller than the one found with similar measurements on, e.g., $n$-(Zn,Mn)O. It is shown that this striking difference in the values of the s-d coupling between $n$-type III-V and II-VI dilute magnetic semiconductors can be explained by a theory that takes into account the acceptor character of Mn in III-V compounds.

Magnetooptical properties of (Ga,Fe)N layers

Magnetooptical properties of (Ga,Mn)N layers containing various concentrations of Fe-rich nanocrystals embedded in paramagnetic (Ga,Fe)N layers are reported. Previous studies of such samples demonstrated that magnetization consists of a paramagnetic contribution due to substitutional diluted Fe ions as well as of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components originating from Fe-rich nanocrystals, whose relative abundance can be controlled by the grow conditions. The nanocrystals are found to broaden and to reduce the magnitude of the excitonic features. However, the ferromagnetic contribution, clearly seen in SQUID magnetometry, is not revealed by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). Possible reasons for differences in magnetic response determined by MCD and SQUID measurements are discussed.

Phase diagram and critical behavior of the random ferromagnet $Ga_{1-x}Mn_xN$

Molecular beam epitaxy has been employed to obtain Ga1-xMnxN films with x up to 10% and Curie temperatures T_C up to 13 K. The magnitudes of T_C and their dependence on x, T_C(x) ~ x^m, where m = 2.2 +/- 0.2 are quantitatively described by a tight binding model of superexchange interactions and Monte Carlo simulations of T_C. The critical behavior of this dilute magnetic insulator shows strong deviations from the magnetically clean case (x = 1), in particular, (i) an apparent breakdown of the Harris criterion; (ii) a non-monotonic crossover in the values of the susceptibility critical exponent gamma_eff between the high temperature and critical regimes, and (iii) a smearing of the critical region, which can be explained either by the Griffiths effects or by macroscopic inhomogeneities in the spin distribution with a variance Delta x = (0.2 +/- 0.1)%.

Homogenous and heterogeneous magnetism in (Zn,Co)O

A series of (ZnO)m(CoO)n digital alloys and superlattices grown by atomic layer deposition has been investigated by a range of experimental methods. The data provide evidences that the Co interdiffusion in the digital alloy structures is sufficient to produce truly random Zn1-xCoxO mixed crystals with x up to 40%. Conversely, in the superlattice structures the interdiffusion is not strong enough to homogenize the Co content along the growth direction results in the formation of (Zn,Co)O films with spatially modulated Co concentrations. All structures deposited at 160\circC show magnetic properties specific to dilute magnetic semiconductors with localized spins S = 3/2 coupled by strong but short range antiferromagnetic interactions that lead to low temperature spin-glass freezing. It is demonstrated that ferromagnetic-like features, visible exclusively in layers grown at 200\circC and above, are associated with an interfacial mesh of metallic Co granules residing between the substrate and the (Zn,Co)O layer. This explains why the magnitude of ferromagnetic signal is virtually independent of the film thickness as well as elucidates the origin of magnetic anisotropy. Our conclusions have been derived for layers in which the Co concentration, distribution, and aggregation have been determined by: secondary-ion mass spectroscopy, electron probe micro-analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with capabilities allowing for chemical analysis; x-ray absorption near-edge structure; extended x-ray absorption fine-structure; x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and x-ray circular magnetic dichroism. Macroscopic properties of these layers have been investigated by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometery and microwave dielectric losses allowing to confirm the important role of metallic inclusions.

Origin of low-temperature magnetic ordering in Ga1-xMnxN

By employing highly sensitive millikelvin SQUID magnetometry, the magnitude of the Curie temperature as a function of the Mn concentration x is determined for thoroughly characterized Ga1-xMnxN. The interpretation of the results in the frame of tight binding theory and of Monte Carlo simulations, allows us to assign the spin interaction to ferromagnetic superexchange and to benchmark the accuracy of state-of-the-art ab initio methods in predicting the magnetic characteristics of dilute magnetic insulators.

Thickness dependence of magnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As

We report on a monotonic reduction of Curie temperature in dilute ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As upon a well controlled chemical-etching/oxidizing thinning from 15 nm down to complete removal of the ferro- magnetic response. The effect already starts at the very beginning of the thinning process and is accompanied by the spin reorientation transition of the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. We postulate that a negative gradient along the growth direction of self-compensating defects (Mn interstitial) and the presence of surface donor traps gives quantitative account on these effects within the p-d mean field Zener model with adequate mod- ifications to take a nonuniform distribution of holes and Mn cations into account. The described here effects are of practical importance for employing thin and ultrathin layers of (Ga,Mn)As or relative compounds in concept spintronics devices, like resonant tunneling devices in particular.

A spectroscopic measurement of galaxy formation timescales with ROLES

We present measurements of the specific star-formation rate (SSFR)-stellar mass relation for star-forming galaxies. Our deep spectroscopic samples are based on the Redshift One LDSS3 Emission line Survey, ROLES, and European Southern Observatory, ESO, public spectroscopy at z=1, and on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at z=0.1. These datasets cover an equally deep mass range of 8.5<~log(M*/Msun)<~11 at both epochs. We find that the SSFR--mass relation evolves in a way which is remarkably independent of stellar mass, as we previously found for the star-formation rate density (SFRD)--mass relation. At higher masses, such as those probed by previous surveys, the evolution in SSFR--mass is almost independent of stellar mass. At higher masses (log(M*/Msun)>10) the shapes of the cumulative cosmic SFRDs are very similar at both z=0.1 and z=1.0, both showing 70% of the total SFRD above a mass of log(M*/Msun)>10. Mass functions are constructed for star-forming galaxies and found to evolve by only <35% between z=1 and z=0.1 over the whole mass range. The evolution is such that the mass function decreases with increasing cosmic time, confirming that galaxies are leaving the star-forming sequence/blue cloud. The observational results are extended to z~2 by adding two recent Lyman break galaxy samples, and data at these three epochs (z=0.1, 1, 2) are compared with the GALFORM semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. GALFORM predicts an overall SFR density (SFRD) as a function of stellar mass in reasonable agreement with the observations. The star formation timescales inferred from 1/SSFR also give reasonable overall agreement, with the agreement becoming worse at the lowest and highest masses. [abridged]

Experimental probing of exchange interactions between localized spins in the dilute magnetic insulator (Ga,Mn)N

The sign, magnitude, and range of the exchange couplings between pairs of Mn ions is determined for (Ga,Mn)N and (Ga,Mn)N:Si with x < 3%. The samples have been grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy and characterized by secondary-ion mass spectroscopy; high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with capabilities allowing for chemical analysis, including the annular dark-field mode and electron energy loss spectroscopy; high-resolution and synchrotron x-ray diffraction; synchrotron extended x-ray absorption fine-structure; synchrotron x-ray absorption near-edge structure; infra-red optics and electron spin resonance. The results of high resolution magnetic measurements and their quantitative interpretation have allowed to verify a series of ab initio predictions on the possibility of ferromagnetism in dilute magnetic insulators and to demonstrate that the interaction changes from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic when the charge state of the Mn ions is reduced from 3+ to 2+.

Properties and characterization of ALD grown dielectric oxides for MIS structures

We report on an extensive structural and electrical characterization of under-gate dielectric oxide insulators Al2O3 and HfO2 grown by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). We elaborate the ALD growth window for these oxides, finding that the 40-100 nm thick layers of both oxides exhibit fine surface flatness and required amorphous structure. These layers constitute a base for further metallic gate evaporation to complete the Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor structure. Our best devices survive energizing up to ~3 MV/cm at 77 K with the leakage current staying below the state-of-the-art level of 1 nA. At these conditions the displaced charge corresponds to a change of the sheet carrier density of 3 \times 1013 cm-2, what promises an effective modulation of the micromagnetic properties in diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors.

Role of interface in ferromagnetism of (Zn,Co)O films

We demonstrate that room temperature ferromagnetic response (RT FR) of ZnCoO films grown at low temperature by the Atomic layer Deposition (ALD) method is due to Co metal accumulations at the ZnCoO/substrate interface region. The accumulated experimental evi evidences allow us to reject several other explanations of this effect in our samples, despite the fact that some of them are likely to be responsible for the low temperature FM in this class of the material.

Sensitive SQUID magnetometry for studying nano-magnetism

The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer is one of the most sensitive experimental techniques to magnetically characterize samples with high sensitivity. Here we present a detailed discussion of possible artifacts and pitfalls characteristic for commercial SQUID magnetometers. This includes intrinsic artifacts which stem from the inherent design of the magnetometer as well as potential issues due to the user. We provide some guidelines how to avoid and correct these, which is of particular importance when the proper magnetization of nano-scale objects shall be established in cases where its response is dwarfed by that of the substrate it comes with, a situation frequently found in the field of nano-magnetism.

Spin-glass behavior in Ni-doped La1:85Sr0:15CuO4

The dynamic and static magnetic properties of La1:85Sr0:15Cu1-yNiyO4 with Ni concentration up to y=0.63 are reported. All the features that characterize the spin-glass (SG) behavior are found: bifurcation of the dc susceptibility chi vs temperature curve, a peak in the zero-field cooling branch of this curve accompanied by a step in the imaginary part of the ac susceptibility chi_ac, frequency dependence of the peak position in the real part of chi_ac and scaling behavior. The decay of remnant magnetization is described by a stretched-exponential function. The characteristic time from the critical slowing-down formula that governs the dynamics of the system suggests the existence of the spin clusters. The strongest interactions between the fluctuating entities are at y equal to the charge carriers concentration in the system. The SG transition temperature decreases linearly with decreasing y for y<0.30 and extrapolates to 0 K at y=0 what means that Ni display a magnetic character in the surrounding Cu-O network starting from the smallest concentration y. The static critical exponents characterizing the scaling behavior of the nonlinear part of chi lie between those typical for three dimensional Ising-like and Heisenberg-like systems

The Fe-Mg interplay and the effect of deposition mode in (Ga,Fe)N doped with Mg

The effect of Mg codoping and its deposition mode on the Fe distribution in (Ga,Fe)N layers grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy is investigated. Both homogeneously- and digitally-Mg codoped samples are considered and contrasted to the case of (Ga,Fe)N layers obtained without any codoping by shallow impurities. The structural analysis of the layers by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and by high-resolution- and synchrotron x-ray diffraction gives evidence of the fact that in the case of homogenous-Mg doping, Mg and Fe competitively occupy the Ga-substitutional cation sites, reducing the efficiency of Fe incorporation. Accordingly, the character of the magnetization is modified from ferromagnetic-like in the non-codoped films to paramagnetic in the case of homogeneous Mg codoping. The findings are discussed vis-`a-vis theoretical results obtained by ab initio computations, showing only a weak effect of codoping on the pairing energy of two Fe cations in bulk GaN. However, according to these computations, codoping reverses the sign of the paring energy of Fe cations at the Ga-rich surface, substantiating the view that the Fe aggregation occurs at the growth surface. In contrast to the homogenous deposition mode, the digital one is found to remarkably promote the aggregation of the magnetic ions. The Fe-rich nanocrystals formed in this way are distributed non-uniformly, giving reason for the observed deviation from a standard superparamagnetic behavior.

ZnCoO Films by Atomic Layer Deposition - influence of a growth temperature on uniformity of cobalt distribution

We report on the structural, electrical and magnetic properties of ZnCoO thin films grown by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) method using reactive organic precursors of zinc and cobalt. As a zinc precursor we applied either dimethylzinc or diethylzinc and cobalt (II) acetyloacetonate as a cobalt precursor. The use of these precursors allowed us the significant reduction of a growth temperature to 300oC and below, which proved to be very important for the growth of uniform films of ZnCoO. Structural, electrical and magnetic properties of the obtained ZnCoO layers will be discussed based on the results of SIMS, SEM, EDS, XRD, AFM, Hall effect and SQUID investigations.

Curie temperature versus hole concentration in field-effect structures of Ga1-xMnxAs

The Curie temperature TC is investigated as a function of the hole concentration p in thin films of ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. The magnetic properties are probed by transport measurements and p is varied by the application of an external electric field in a field-effect transistor configuration. It is found that TC is proportional to p^γ, where the exponent γ= 0.19 \pm 0.02 over a wide range of Mn compositions and channel thicknesses. The magnitude of gamma is reproduced by a p-d Zener model taking into account nonuniform hole distribution along the growth direction, determined by interface states and the applied gate electric fields.

The local chemistry, structure, and magnetism of (Ga,Fe)N nanocomposites grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy is studied by high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction and absorption, transmission electron microscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry as a function of the growth temperature $T_{\mathrm{g}}$. Three contributions to the magnetization are identified: i) paramagnetic -- originating from dilute and non-interacting Fe$^{3+}$ ions substitutional of Ga, and dominating in layers obtained at the lowest considered $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ (800$^{\circ}$C); ii) superparamagnetic-like -- brought about mainly by ferromagnetic nanocrystals of $ε-$Fe$_3$N but also by $γ'$-Fe$_4$N and by inclusions of elemental $α$- and $γ$-Fe, and prevalent in films obtained in the intermediate $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ range; iii) component linear in the magnetic field and associated with antiferromagnetic interactions -- found to originate from highly nitridated Fe$_x$N ($x \leq$ 2) phases, like $ζ$-Fe$_2$N, and detected in samples deposited at the highest employed temperature, $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ = 950$^{\circ}$C. Furthermore, depending on $T_{\mathrm{g}}$, the Fe-rich nanocrystals segregate towards the sample surface or occupy two-dimensional planes perpendicular to the growth direction.

Temperature Dependent Magnetic Anisotropy in (Ga,Ma)As Layers

It is demonstrated by SQUID magnetization measurements that (Ga,Mn)As films can exhibit rich characteristics of magnetic anisotropy depending not only to the epitaxial strain but being strongly influenced by the hole and Mn concentration, and temperature. This behavior reflects the spin anisotropy of the valence subbands and corroborates predictions of the mean field Zener model of the carrier mediated ferromagnetism in III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors with Mn. At the same time the existence of in-plane uniaxial anisotropy with [110] the easy axis is evidenced. This is related to the top/bottom symmetry breaking, resulting in the lowering of point symmetry of (Ga,Mn)As to the C_{2v} symmetry group. The latter mechanism coexists with the hole-induced cubic anisotropy, but takes over close to T_C.

Dynamically Close Galaxy Pairs and Merger Rate Evolution in the CNOC2 Redshift Survey

We investigate redshift evolution in the galaxy merger and accretion rates, using a well-defined sample of 4184 galaxies with 0.12 < z < 0.55 and R_C < 21.5. We identify 88 galaxies in close (5 < r_p < 20 h^{-1} kpc) dynamical (delta v < 500 km/s) pairs. These galaxies are used to compute global pair statistics, after accounting for selection effects resulting from the flux limit, k-corrections, luminosity evolution, and spectroscopic incompleteness. We find that the number of companions per galaxy (for -21 < M_B^{k,e} < -18) is Nc = 0.0321 +/- 0.0077 at z=0.3. The luminosity in companions, per galaxy, is Lc = 0.0294 +/- 0.0084 x 10^10 h^2 L_sun. We assume that Nc is proportional to the galaxy merger rate, while Lc is directly related to the mass accretion rate. After increasing the maximum pair separation to 50 h^{-1} kpc, and comparing with the low redshift SSRS2 pairs sample, we infer evolution in the galaxy merger and accretion rates of (1+z)^{2.3 +/- 0.7} and (1+z)^{2.3 +/- 0.9} respectively. These are the first such estimates to be made using only confirmed dynamical pairs. When combined with several additional assumptions, this implies that approximately 15% of present epoch galaxies with -21 < M_B < -18 have undergone a major merger since z=1.

Galaxy Groups at Intermediate Redshift

Galaxy groups likely to be virialized are identified within the CNOC2 intermediate redshift galaxy survey using an iterative method. The number-velocity dispersion relation is in agreement with the low-mass extrapolation of the cluster normalized Press-Schechter function. The two-point group-group correlation function has r_0=6.8+/- 0.3 Mpc, which is larger than the correlations of individual galaxies at the level predicted from n-body calibrated halo clustering. The groups are stacked in velocity and position to create a sample large enough for measurement of a density and velocity dispersion profile. The stacked mean galaxy density profile falls nearly as a power law with r^{-2.5} and has no well-defined core. The projected velocity dispersion is examined for a variety of samples with different methods and found to be either flat or slowly rising outwards. The combination of a steeper-than-isothermal density profile and the outward rising velocity dispersion implies that the mass-to-light ratio of groups rises with radius. The M/L can be kept nearly constant if the galaxy orbits are nearly circular, although such strong tangential anisotropy is not supported by other evidence. The segregation of mass and light is not dependent on galaxy luminosity but is far more prominent in the red galaxies than the blue. The M/L gradient could arise from orbital ``sloshing'' of the galaxies in the group halos, dynamical friction acting on the galaxies in a background of ``classical'' collisionless dark matter, or, more speculatively, the dark matter may have a true core.

Interaction effects at the magnetic-field induced metal-insulator transition in Si/SiGe superlattices

A metal-insulator transition was induced by in-plane magnetic fields up to 27 T in homogeneously Sb-doped Si/SiGe superlattice structures. The localisation is not observed for perpendicular magnetic fields. A comparison with magnetoconductivity investigations in the weakly localised regime shows that the delocalising effect originates from the interaction-induced spin-triplet term in the particle-hole diffusion channel. It is expected that this term, possibly together with the singlet particle-particle contribution, is of general importance in disordered n-type Si bulk and heterostructures.
