Analytic theory of pair distribution functions in symmetric electron-electron and electron-hole bilayers

We present a self-consistent analytic theory of the intra-layer and inter-layer pair correlation functions in electron-electron and electron-hole fluid bilayer systems. Our approach involves the solution of a zero-energy scattering Schroedinger equation with an effective potential which includes a Bose-like term from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations and a Fermi term from kinetic energy and exchange, tailored to yield the Hartree-Fock limit at high carrier density. The theory is also shown to satisfy the plasmon sum rule and the charge neutrality condition. We obtain good agreement with the available Quantum Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) data in symmetric bilayers over a wide range of carrier density and layer spacing, and stress the role of three-body correlation terms in yielding fully quantitative agreement at strong coupling. Signals of impending transitions to density-modulated states at strong coupling and low layer spacing appear in the calculated pair correlations through inter-layer in-phase oscillations for electron-hole bilayers and out-of-phase oscillations for electron-electron bilayers, in agreement with the DMC findings.

Bethe-Ansatz density-functional theory of ultracold repulsive fermions in one-dimensional optical lattices

We present an extensive numerical study of ground-state properties of confined repulsively interacting fermions on one-dimensional optical lattices. Detailed predictions for the atom-density profiles are obtained from parallel Kohn-Sham density-functional calculations and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The density-functional calculations employ a Bethe-Ansatz-based local-density approximation for the correlation energy, which accounts for Luttinger-liquid and Mott-insulator physics. Semi-analytical and fully numerical formulations of this approximation are compared with each other and with a cruder Thomas-Fermi-like local-density approximation for the total energy. Precise quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to assess the reliability of the various local-density approximations, and in conjunction with these allow to obtain a detailed microscopic picture of the consequences of the interplay between particle-particle interactions and confinement in one-dimensional systems of strongly correlated fermions.

Single-particle and collective excitations in a charged Bose gas at finite temperature

The main focus of this work is on the predictions made by the dielectric formalism in regard to the relationship between single-particle and collective excitation spectra in a gas of point-like charged bosons at finite temperature $T$ below the critical region of Bose-Einstein condensation. Illustrative numerical results at weak coupling ($r_s = 1$) are presented within the Random Phase Approximation. We show that within this approach the single-particle spectrum forms a continuum extending from the transverse to the longitudinal plasma mode frequency and leading to a double-peak structure as $T$ increases, whereas the density fluctuation spectrum consists of a single broadening peak. We also discuss the momentum distribution and the superfluidity of the gas.

Collective dynamics of fermion clouds in cigar-shaped traps

The propagation of zero sound in a spin-polarized Fermi gas under harmonic confinement is studied as a function of the mean-field interactions with a second Fermi gas. A local-density treatment is compared with the numerical solution of the Vlasov-Landau equations for the propagation of density distortions in a trapped two-component Fermi gas at temperature T=0.2 Tf. The response of the gas to the sudden creation of a sharp hole at its centre is also studied numerically.

Collective excitations of a trapped boson-fermion mixture across demixing

We calculate the spectrum of low-lying collective excitations in a mesoscopic cloud formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate and a spin-polarized Fermi gas as a function of the boson-fermion repulsions. The cloud is under isotropic harmonic confinement and its dynamics is treated in the collisional regime by using the equations of generalized hydrodynamics with inclusion of surface effects. For large numbers of bosons we find that, as the cloud moves towards spatial separation (demixing) with increasing boson-fermion coupling, the frequencies of a set of collective modes show a softening followed by a sharp upturn. This behavior permits a clear identification of the quantum phase transition. We propose a physical interpretation for the dynamical transition point in a confined mixture, leading to a simple analytical expression for its location.

Spin polarization in a two-dimensional electron gas

We evaluate the charge and longitudinal spin response functions of a two-dimensional electron gas with $e^2/r$ interactions in an arbitrary state of spin polarization, using a structurally self-consistent approach to treat exchange and correlations. From the results we assess the nature of the magnetic order in the electronic ground state in zero magnetic field as a function of electron density. We find that states of partial spin polarization are thermodynamically unstable at all values of the coupling strength and that a first-order phase transition occurs with increasing coupling strength from the magnetically disorderd (paramagnetic) phase to the fully spin-polarized (ferromagnetic) phase. This behavior is in qualitative agreement with diffusion Monte Carlo data, although the location of the phase transition is underestimated in our calculations.

Kinetic energy of a trapped Fermi gas interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study a confined mixture of bosons and fermions in the regime of quantal degeneracy, with particular attention to the effects of the interactions on the kinetic energy of the fermionic component. We are able to explore a wide region of system parameters by identifying two scaling variables which completely determine its state at low temperature. These are the ratio of the boson-fermion and boson-boson interaction strengths and the ratio of the radii of the two clouds. We find that the effect of the interactions can be sizeable for reasonable choices of the parameters and that its experimental study can be used to infer the sign of the boson-fermion scattering length. The interplay between interactions and thermal effects in the fermionic kinetic energy is also discussed.

Temperature-dependent density profiles of trapped boson-fermion mixtures

We present a semiclassical three-fluid model for a Bose-condensed mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi gases confined in harmonic traps at finite temperature. The model is used to characterize the experimentally relevant behaviour of the equilibrium density profile of the fermions with varying composition and temperature across the onset of degeneracy, for coupling strengths relevant to a mixture of $^{39}$K and $^{40}$K atoms.
