Exact spectral function of a Tonks-Girardeau gas in a lattice

The single-particle spectral function of a strongly correlated system is an essential ingredient to describe its dynamics and transport properties. We develop a general method to calculate the exact spectral function of a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas in the Tonks-Girardeau regime, valid for any type of confining potential, and apply it to bosons on a lattice to obtain the full spectral function, at all energy and momentum scales. We find that it displays three main singularity lines. The first two can be identified as the analogs of Lieb-I and Lieb-II modes of a uniform fluid; the third one, instead, is specifically due to the presence of the lattice. We show that the spectral function displays a power-law behaviour close to the Lieb-I and Lieb-II singularities, as predicted by the non-linear Luttinger liquid description, and obtain the exact exponents. In particular, the Lieb-II mode shows a divergence in the spectral function, differently from what happens in the dynamical structure factor, thus providing a route to probe it in experiments with ultracold atoms.

Bosonization and entanglement spectrum for one-dimensional polar bosons on disordered lattices

The extended Bose-Hubbard model subjected to a disordered potential is predicted to display a rich phase diagram. In the case of uniform random disorder one finds two insulating quantum phases -- the Mott-insulator and the Haldane insulator -- in addition to a superfluid and a Bose glass phase. In the case of a quasiperiodic potential further phases are found, eg the incommensurate density wave, adiabatically connected to the Haldane insulator. For the case of weak random disorder we determine the phase boundaries using a perturbative bosonization approach. We then calculate the entanglement spectrum for both types of disorder, showing that it provides a good indication of the various phases.

Probing superfluidity of a mesoscopic Tonks-Girardeau gas

We study the dynamical response of a Tonks-Girardeau gas on a ring induced by a moving delta-barrier potential. An exact solution based on the time-dependent Bose-Fermi mapping allows to obtain the particle current, its fluctuations and the drag force acting on the barrier. The exact solution is analyzed numerically as well as analytically in the perturbative regime of weak barrier strength. In the weak barrier limit the stirring drives the system into a state with net zero current for velocities $v$ smaller than $v_c=π\hbar /mL$, with $m$ the atomic mass and $L$ the ring circumference. At $v$ approaching $v_c$ angular momentum can be transferred to the fluid and a nonzero drag force arises. The existence of a velocity threshold for current generation indicates superfluid-like behavior of the mesoscopic Tonks-Girardeau gas, different from the non-superfluid behavior predicted for Tonks-Girardeau gas in an infinite tube.

Nonadiabatic creation of macroscopic superpositions with strongly correlated 1D bosons on a ring trap

We consider a strongly interacting quasi-one dimensional Bose gas on a tight ring trap subjected to a localized barrier potential. We explore the possibility to form a macroscopic superposition of a rotating and a nonrotating state under nonequilibrium conditions, achieved by a sudden quench of the barrier velocity. Using an exact solution for the dynamical evolution in the impenetrable-boson (Tonks-Girardeau) limit, we find an expression for the many-body wavefunction corresponding to a superposition state. The superposition is formed when the barrier velocity is tuned close to multiples of integer or half-integer number of Coriolis flux quanta. As a consequence of the strong interactions, we find that (i) the state of the system can be mapped onto a macroscopic superposition of two Fermi spheres, rather than two macroscopically occupied single-particle states as in a weakly interacting gas, and (ii) the barrier velocity should be larger than the sound velocity to better discriminate the two components of the superposition.

Noise in Bose Josephson junctions: Decoherence and phase relaxation

Squeezed states and macroscopic superpositions of coherent states have been predicted to be generated dynamically in Bose Josephson junctions. We solve exactly the quantum dynamics of such a junction in the presence of a classical noise coupled to the population-imbalance number operator (phase noise), accounting for, for example, the experimentally relevant fluctuations of the magnetic field. We calculate the correction to the decay of the visibility induced by the noise in the non-Markovian regime. Furthermore, we predict that such a noise induces an anomalous rate of decoherence among the components of the macroscopic superpositions, which is independent of the total number of atoms, leading to potential interferometric applications.

Reply to arXiv:1002.4366, "Comment on `Motion of an impurity in an ultracold quasi-one-dimensional gas of hard-core bosons`", by S. Giraud and R. Combescot

In their Comment [1] Giraud and Combescot point out that the contribution to the impurity-boson distribution function $ρ_{bi}(x-y)$ of a term we dropped is not negligible, rather than being negligible in the thermodynamic limit as we had conjectured. We now agree with them, but nevertheless our results for $ρ_{bi}$ are highly accurate for large impurity-boson mass ratio $m_i/m$ and remain qualitatively correct for all values of $m_i/m$ and all values of the boson-impurity coupling constant.

Generalized harmonic-fluid approach for the off-diagonal correlations of a one-dimensional interacting Bose gas

We develop a generalized harmonic-fluid approach, based on a regularization of the effective low-energy Luttinger-liquid Hamiltonian, for a one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions. The method enables us to compute the complete series corresponding to the large-distance, off-diagonal behavior of the one-body density matrix for any value of the Luttinger parameter K. We compare our results with the exact ones known in the Tonks-Girardeau limit of infinitely large interactions (corresponding to K=1) and, different from the usual harmonic-fluid approach, we recover the full structure of the series. The structure is conserved for arbitrary values of the interaction strength, with power laws fixed by the universal parameter K and a sequence of subleading corrections.

Quantum fluctuations of a Bose-Josephson junction in a quasi-one-dimensional ring trap

Using a Luttinger-liquid approach we study the quantum fluctuations of a Bose-Josephson junction, consisting of a Bose gas confined to a quasi one-dimensional ring trap which contains a localized repulsive potential barrier. For an infinite barrier we study the one-particle and two-particle static correlation functions. For the one-body density-matrix we obtain different power-law decays depending on the location of the probe points with respect to the position of the barrier. This quasi-long range order can be experimentally probed in principle using an interference measurement. The corresponding momentum distribution at small momenta is also shown to be affected by the presence of the barrier and to display the universal power-law behavior expected for an interacting 1D fluid. We also evaluate the particle density profile, and by comparing with the exact results in the Tonks-Girardeau limit we fix the nonuniversal parameters of the Luttinger-liquid theory. Once the parameters are determined from one-body properties, we evaluate the density-density correlation function, finding a remarkable agreement between the Luttinger liquid predictions and the exact result in the Tonks-Girardeau limit, even at the length scale of the Friedel-like oscillations which characterize the behavior of the density-density correlation function at intermediate distance. Finally, for a large but finite barrier we use the one-body correlation function to estimate the effect of quantum fluctuations on the renormalization of the barrier height, finding a reduction of the effective Josephson coupling energy, which depends on the length of the ring and on the interaction strength.

Quantum stirring as a sensitive probe of 1D superfluidity

We propose quantum stirring with a laser beam as a probe of superfluid behavior for a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas confined to a ring. Within the Luttinger liquid theory framework, we calculate the fraction of stirred particles per period as a function of the stirring velocity, the interaction strength and the coupling between the stirring beam and the bosons. The fraction of stirred particles allows to probe superfluidity of the system. We find that it crosses over at a critical velocity, lower than the sound one, from a characteristic power law at high velocities to a constant at low velocities. Some experimental issues on quantum stirring in ring-trapped condensates are discussed.

Collective excitations of a trapped boson-fermion mixture across demixing

We calculate the spectrum of low-lying collective excitations in a mesoscopic cloud formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate and a spin-polarized Fermi gas as a function of the boson-fermion repulsions. The cloud is under isotropic harmonic confinement and its dynamics is treated in the collisional regime by using the equations of generalized hydrodynamics with inclusion of surface effects. For large numbers of bosons we find that, as the cloud moves towards spatial separation (demixing) with increasing boson-fermion coupling, the frequencies of a set of collective modes show a softening followed by a sharp upturn. This behavior permits a clear identification of the quantum phase transition. We propose a physical interpretation for the dynamical transition point in a confined mixture, leading to a simple analytical expression for its location.

Kinetic energy of a trapped Fermi gas interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study a confined mixture of bosons and fermions in the regime of quantal degeneracy, with particular attention to the effects of the interactions on the kinetic energy of the fermionic component. We are able to explore a wide region of system parameters by identifying two scaling variables which completely determine its state at low temperature. These are the ratio of the boson-fermion and boson-boson interaction strengths and the ratio of the radii of the two clouds. We find that the effect of the interactions can be sizeable for reasonable choices of the parameters and that its experimental study can be used to infer the sign of the boson-fermion scattering length. The interplay between interactions and thermal effects in the fermionic kinetic energy is also discussed.

Temperature-dependent density profiles of trapped boson-fermion mixtures

We present a semiclassical three-fluid model for a Bose-condensed mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi gases confined in harmonic traps at finite temperature. The model is used to characterize the experimentally relevant behaviour of the equilibrium density profile of the fermions with varying composition and temperature across the onset of degeneracy, for coupling strengths relevant to a mixture of $^{39}$K and $^{40}$K atoms.
