Pressure dependence of the magnetic ground state in CePtSi2

CePtSi2 was reported to exhibit an antiferromagnetic order below T*=1.8 K at ambient pressure, a valence state change at ~1.2 GPa, and superconductivity in the range between 1.4 and 2.1 GPa with the maximum transition temperature of 0.14 K [T. Nakano et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 172507 (2009)]. We have performed polycrystalline and single crystal neutron diffraction experiments to determine the magnetic structure under ambient and high pressures. We found that incommensurate magnetic peaks with the magnetic propagation vector of (0.32, 0, 0.11) at ambient pressure below T_{SDW}~1.25 K. Those magnetic peaks which originate from a spin-density-wave order with the easy axis along the c axis and an averaged ordered moment of 0.45(5) mu_B, suggesting that there may be an intermediate phase between T* and T_{SDW}. Applying pressures, the magnetic propagation vector shows no change and the magnetic order disappears around 1.0 GPa, which is much lower than the critical pressure for the superconducting phase. The results suggest that other than magnetic fluctuations may play a primary role in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Growth and characterization of large (Y,La)TiO$_3$ and (Y,Ca)TiO$_3$ single crystals

The Mott-insulating rare-earth titanates (RTiO$_3$, R being a rare-earth ion) are an important class of materials that encompasses interesting spin-orbital phases as well as ferromagnet-antiferromagnet and insulator-metal transitions. The growth of these materials has been plagued by difficulties related to overoxidation, which arises from a strong tendency of Ti$^{3+}$ to oxidize to Ti$^{4+}$. We describe our efforts to grow sizable single crystals of YTiO$_3$ and its La-substituted and Ca-doped variants with the optical travelling-solvent floating-zone technique. We present sample characterization $via$ chemical composition analysis, magnetometry, charge transport, neutron scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to understand macroscopic physical property variations associated with overoxidation. Furthermore, we demonstrate a good signal-to-noise ratio in inelastic magnetic neutron scattering measurements of spin-wave excitations. A superconducting impurity phase, found to appear in Ca-doped samples at high doping levels, is identified as TiO.

$\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ long-range magnetic order in centennialite CaCu$_3$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$$\cdot$0.6D$_2$O: A spin-1/2 perfect kagome antiferromagnet with $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$

Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O are investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O crystallizes in the $P\bar{3}m1$ space group and Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $J_1$. No intersite disorder between Cu$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ ions is detected. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $T_\text{N}=7.2$~K, and the $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3~K is suppressed to $0.58(2)μ_\text{B}$. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and ferromagnetic $J_d$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$ kagome antiferromagnet.

A-type Antiferromagnetic order in MnBi4Te7 and MnBi6Te10 single crystals

MnBi$_4$Te$_{7}$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ are two members with n=2 and 3 in the family of MnBi$_{2n}$Te$_{3n+1}$ where the n=1 member, MnBi$_2$Te$_{4}$, has been intensively investigated as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator. Here we report the A-type antiferromagnetic order in these two compounds by measuring magnetic properties, electrical and thermal transport, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction. Both compounds order into an A-type antiferromagnetic structure as does MnBi$_2$Te$_{4}$ with ferromagnetic planes coupled antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic \textit{c} axis. While no evidence for any in-plane ordered moment is found for MnBi$_2$Te$_{4}$ or MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, weak reflections at half-L positions along the [0 0 L] direction are observed for MnBi$_4$Te$_{7}$ suggesting an in-plane ordered moment around 0.15$μ_{B}$/Mn. The ordering temperature, T$_N$, is 13\,K for MnBi$_4$Te$_{7}$ and 11\,K for MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$. The magnetic order is also manifested in the anisotropic magnetic properties. For both compounds, the interlayer coupling is weak and a spin flip transition occurs when a magnetic field of around 1.6\,kOe is applied along the \textit{c}-axis at 2\,K. As observed in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, when cooling across T$_N$, no anomaly was observed in the temperature dependence of thermopower. On the other hand, critical scattering effects are observed in thermal conductivity although the effect is less pronounced than that in MnBi$_2$Te$_{4}$.

Helimagnetic Structure and Heavy-Fermion-Like Behavior in the Vicinity of the Quantum Critical Point in Mn$_3$P

Antiferromagnet Mn$_3$P with Neel temperature $T_N=30$ K is composed of Mn-tetrahedrons and zigzag chains formed by three inequivalent Mn sites. Due to the nearly frustrated lattice with many short Mn-Mn bonds, competition of the exchange interactions is expected. We here investigate the magnetic structure and physical properties including pressure effect in single crystals of this material, and reveal a complex yet well-ordered helimagnetic structure. The itinerant character of this materials is strong, and the ordered state with small magnetic moments is easily suppressed under pressure, exhibiting a quantum critical point at $\sim1.6$ GPa. The remarkable mass renormalization, even in the ordered state, and an incoherent-coherent crossover in the low-temperature region, characterize an unusual electronic state in Mn$_3$P, which is most likely effected by the underlying frustration effect.

Frustrated magnetic interactions in an S=3/2 bilayer honeycomb lattice compound Bi3Mn4O12(NO3)

Inelastic neutron scattering study has been performed in an S=3/2 bilayer honeycomb lattice compound Bi3Mn4O12(NO3) at ambient and high magnetic fields. Relatively broad and monotonically dispersive magnetic excitations were observed at ambient field, where no long range magnetic order exists. In the magnetic field-induced long-range ordered state at 10 T, the magnetic dispersions become slightly more intense, albeit still broad as in the disordered state, and two excitation gaps, probably originating from an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy and intrabilayer interactions, develop. Analyzing the magnetic dispersions using the linear spin-wave theory, we estimated the intraplane and intrabilayer magnetic interactions, which are almost consistent with those determined by ab initio density functional theory calculations [M. Alaei et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 140404(R) (2017)], except the 3rd and 4th neighbor intrabilayer interactions. Most importantly, as predicted by the theory, there is no significant frustration in the honeycomb plane but frustrating intrabilayer interactions probably give rise to the disordered ground state.

Electron doping evolution of the neutron spin resonance in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As

Neutron spin resonance, a collective magnetic excitation coupled to superconductivity, is one of the most prominent features shared by a broad family of unconventional superconductors including copper oxides, iron pnictides, and heavy fermions. In this work, we study the doping evolution of the resonances in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As covering the entire superconducting dome. For the underdoped compositions, two resonance modes coexist. As doping increases, the low-energy resonance gradually loses its spectral weight to the high-energy one but remains at the same energy. By contrast, in the overdoped regime we only find one single resonance, which acquires a broader width in both energy and momentum, but retains approximately the same peak position even when $T_c$ drops by nearly a half compared to optimal doping. These results suggest that the energy of the resonance in electron overdoped NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As is neither simply proportional to $T_c$ nor the superconducting gap, but is controlled by the multi-orbital character of the system and doped impurity scattering effect.

Pressure dependence of the magnetic ground states in MnP

MnP, a superconductor under pressure, exhibits a ferromagnetic order below TC~290 K followed by a helical order with the spins lying in the ab plane and the helical rotation propagating along the c axis below Ts~50 K at ambient pressure. We performed single crystal neutron diffraction experiments to determine the magnetic ground states under pressure. Both TC and Ts are gradually suppressed with increasing pressure and the helical order disappears at ~1.2 GPa. At intermediate pressures of 1.8 and 2.0 GPa, the ferromagnetic order first develops and changes to a conical or two-phase (ferromagnetic and helical) structure with the propagation along the b axis below a characteristic temperature. At 3.8 GPa, a helical magnetic order appears below 208 K, which hosts the spins in the ac plane and the propagation along the b axis. The period of this b axis modulation is shorter than that at 1.8 GPa. Our results indicate that the magnetic phase in the vicinity of the superconducting phase may have a helical magnetic correlation along the b axis.

Spin-lattice coupling mediated multiferroicity in (ND4)2FeCl5D2O

We report a neutron diffraction study of the multiferroic mechanism in (ND4)2FeCl5D2O, a molecular compound that exhibits magnetically induced ferroelectricity. This material exhibits two successive magnetic transitions on cooling: a long-range order transition to an incommensurate (IC) collinear sinusoidal spin state at TN=7.3 K, followed by a second transition to an IC cycloidal spin state at TFE=6.8 K, the later of which is accompanied by spontaneous ferroelectric polarization. The cycloid structure is strongly distorted by spin-lattice coupling as evidenced by the observations of both odd and even higher-order harmonics associated with the cycloid wave vector, and a weak commensurate phase that coexists with the IC phase. The appearance of the 2nd-order harmonic coincides with the onset of the electric polarization, thereby providing unambiguous evidence that the induced electric polarization is mediated by the spin-lattice interaction. Our results for this system, in which the orbital angular momentum is expected to be quenched, are remarkably similar to those of the prototypical TbMnO3, in which the magnetoelectric effect is attributed to spin-orbit coupling.

Static and Dynamical Properties of the Spin-1/2 Equilateral Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

We present single-crystal neutron scattering measurements of the spin-1/2 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. Besides confirming that the Co$^{2+}$ magnetic moments lie in the ab plane for zero magnetic field, we determine all the exchange parameters of the minimal quasi-2D spin Hamiltonian, which confirms that Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ is an almost perfect realization of the paradigmatic model of frustrated quantum magnetism. A comparison with linear and nonlinear spin-wave theory reveals that quantum fluctuations induce a strong downward renormalization of the magnon dispersion.

Transition from sign-reversed to sign-preserved Cooper-pairing symmetry in sulfur-doped iron selenide superconductors

An essential step toward elucidating the mechanism of superconductivity is to determine the sign/phase of superconducting order parameter, as it is closely related to the pairing interaction. In conventional superconductors, the electron-phonon interaction induces attraction between electrons near the Fermi energy and results in a sign-preserved s-wave pairing. For high-temperature superconductors, including cuprates and iron-based superconductors, prevalent weak coupling theories suggest that the electron pairing is mediated by spin fluctuations which lead to repulsive interactions, and therefore that a sign-reversed pairing with an s+-or d-wave symmetry is favored. Here, by using magnetic neutron scattering, a phase sensitive probe of superconducting gap, we report the observation of a transition from the sign-reversed to sign-preserved Cooper-pairing symmetry with insignificant changes in Tc in the S-doped iron selenide superconductors KxFe2-y(Se1-zSz)2. We show that a rather sharp magnetic resonant mode well below the superconducting gap (2delta) in the undoped sample (z = 0) is replaced by a broad hump structure above 2delta under 50% S doping. These results cannot be readily explained by simple spin fluctuation-exchange pairing theories and, therefore, multiple pairing channels are required to describe superconductivity in this system. Our findings may also yield a simple explanation for the sometimes contradictory data on the sign of the superconducting order parameter in iron-based materials.

An orbital glass state of a nearly metallic spinel, CoV$_2$O$_4$

Strain, magnetization, and unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction measurements were performed to study the magnetic and structural properties of spinel CoV$_{2}$O$_{4}$. Magnetostriction measurements indicate that a subtle distortion of the crystal along the direction of magnetization, $ΔL/L \sim 10^{-4}$, exists and varies from elongation to contraction in a second order fashion upon cooling. Unpolarized and polarized single-crystal neutron experiments indicate that upon cooling the ferrimagnetic structure changes from collinear to noncollinear at $T \sim 90$ K, where the elongation of the crystal is maximized. These results imply the existence of an orbital glassy state in the nearly metallic frustrated magnet CoV$_{2}$O$_{4}$.

Evolution of competing magnetic order in the Jeff=1/2 insulating state of Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4

We investigate the magnetic properties of the series Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 with neutron, resonant x-ray and magnetization measurements. The results indicate an evolution and coexistence of magnetic structures via a spin flop transition from ab-plane to c-axis collinear order as the 5d Ir4+ ions are replaced with an increasing concentration of 4d Ru4+ ions. The magnetic structures within the ordered regime of the phase diagram (x<0.3) are reported. Despite the changes in magnetic structure no alteration of the Jeff=1/2 ground state is observed. The behavior of Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 is consistent with electronic phase separation and diverges from a standard scenario of hole doping. The role of lattice alterations with doping on the magnetic and insulating behavior is considered. The results presented here provide insight into the magnetic insulating states in strong spin-orbit coupled materials and the role perturbations play in altering the behavior.

Magnetic excitations from an S=1/2 diamond-shaped tetramer compound Cu2PO4OH

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out on a powder sample of Cu2PO4OH, which consists of diamond-shaped tetramer spin units with S=1/2. We have observed two nearly dispersionless magnetic excitations at E1~12 and E2~20 meV, whose energy width are broader than the instrumental resolution. The simplest square tetramer model with one dominant interaction, which predicts two sharp excitation peaks at E1 and E2(=2E1), does not explain the experimental result. We found that two diagonal intratetramer interactions compete with the main interaction and weak intertetramer interactions connect the tetramers. The main intratetramer interaction is found to split into two inequivalent ones due to a structural distortion below 160 K. Cu2PO4OH is considered to be a good material to study the S=1/2 Heisenberg tetramer system.

Strong competition between orbital-ordering and itinerancy in a frustrated spinel vanadate

The crossover from localized- to itinerant-electron behavior is associated with many intriguing phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co doping, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co doping, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scattering measurements and first-principles-guided spin models reveal that the non-collinear state at high Co doping is produced by weakened local anisotropy and enhanced Co-V spin interactions.

Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in CeCu$_{6-x}T_x$ ($T$ = Ag, Pd)

The structural and the magnetic properties of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.85) and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) have been studied using neutron diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), heat capacity, x-ray diffraction measurements and first principles calculations. The structural and magnetic phase diagrams of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ as a function of Ag/Pd composition are reported. The end member, CeCu$_6$, undergoes a structural phase transition from an orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to a monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) phase at 240 K. In CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$, the structural phase transition temperature (${T_{s}}$) decreases linearly with Ag concentration and extrapolates to zero at $x_{S}$ $\approx$ 0.1. The structural transition in CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ remains unperturbed with Pd substitution within the range of our study. The lattice constant $b$ slightly decreases with Ag/Pd doping, whereas, $a$ and $c$ increase with an overall increase in the unit cell volume. Both systems, CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$, exhibit a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP), at $x$ $\approx$ 0.2 and $x$ $\approx$ 0.05 respectively. Near the QCP, long range antiferromagnetic ordering takes place at an incommensurate wave vector ($δ_1$ 0 $δ_2$) where $δ_1 \sim 0.62$, $δ_2 \sim 0.25$, $x$ = 0.125 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ and $δ_1 \sim 0.64$, $δ_2 \sim 0.3$, $x$ = 0.3 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$. The magnetic structure consists of an amplitude modulation of the Ce-moments which are aligned along the $c$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell.

Substitution of Ni for Fe in superconducting Fe$_{0.98}$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ depresses the normal-state conductivity but not the magnetic spectral weight

We have performed systematic resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Fe$_{0.98-z}$Ni$_z$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ samples to study the impact of Ni substitution on the transport properties and the low-energy ($\le$ 12 meV) magnetic excitations. It is found that, with increasing Ni doping, both the conductivity and superconductivity are gradually suppressed; in contrast, the low-energy magnetic spectral weight changes little. Comparing with the impact of Co and Cu substitution, we find that the effects on conductivity and superconductivity for the same degree of substitution grow systematically as the atomic number of the substituent deviates from that of Fe. The impact of the substituents as scattering centers appears to be greater than any contribution to carrier concentration. The fact that low-energy magnetic spectral weight is not reduced by increased electron scattering indicates that the existence of antiferromagnetic correlations does not depend on electronic states close to the Fermi energy.

Coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeO$_{0.3}$F$_{0.7}$BiS$_{2}$

Bulk magnetization, transport and neutron scattering measurements were performed to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of a polycrystalline sample of the newly discovered ferromagnetic superconductor, CeO$_{0.3}$F$_{0.7}$BiS$_{2}$. Ferromagnetism develops below T$_{FM}$ = 6.54(8) K and superconductivity is found to coexist with the ferromagnetic state below T$_{SC}$ ~ 4.5 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal a very weakly dispersive magnetic excitation at 1.8 meV that can be explained by an Ising-like spin Hamiltonian. Under application of an external magnetic field, the direction of the magnetic moment changes from the c-axis to the ab-plane and the 1.8 meV excitation splits into two modes. A possible mechanism for the unusual magnetism and its relation to superconductivity is discussed.

Magnetic and Structural Phase Transitions in the Spinel Compound Fe1+xCr2-xO4

Neutron and X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase transitions of the spinel system Fe1+xCr2-xO4(0.0<=x<=1.0). The temperature versus Fe concentration (x) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jahn-Teller distortion, spin-lattice interaction, Fe2+-Fe3+ hopping, and disorder among Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ ions.

Magnetic ordering induced by interladder coupling in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg two-leg ladder antiferromagnet C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$

We present specific-heat and neutron-scattering results for the \emph{S}=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet (dimethylammonium)(3,5-dimethylpyridinium)CuBr$_4$. The material orders magnetically at \emph{T}$_N$=1.99(2)\,K, and magnetic excitations are accompanied by an energy gap of 0.30(2) meV due to spin anisotropy. The system is best described as coupled two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with the leg exchange $J_{\rm leg}$=0.60(2)~meV, rung exchange $J_{\rm rung}$=0.64(9)~meV, interladder exchange $J_{\rm int}$=0.19(2)~meV, and an interaction-anisotropy parameter $λ$=0.93(2), according to inelastic neutron-scattering measurements. In contrast to most spin ladders reported to date, the material is a rare example in which the interladder coupling is very near the critical value required to drive the system to a Néel-ordered phase without an assistance of a magnetic field.

Neutron inelastic scattering measurements of low energy phonons in the multiferroic BiFeO3

We present neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the low-energy phonons in single crystal BiFeO3. The dispersions of the three acoustic phonon modes (LA along [100], TA1 along [010] and TA2 along [110]) and two low energy optic phonon modes (LO and TO1) have been mapped out between 300 K and 700 K. Elastic constants are extracted from the phonon measurements. The energy linewidths of both TA phonons at the zone boundary clearly broaden when the system is warmed toward the magnetic ordering temperature TN = 640 K. This suggests that the magnetic and low-energy lattice dynamics in this multiferroic material are coupled.

The evolution of antiferromagnetic susceptibility to uniaxial pressure in Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2

Neutron diffraction measurements are presented measuring the responses of both magnetic and structural order parameters of parent and lightly Co-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 under the application of uniaxial pressure. We find that the uniaxial pressure induces a thermal shift in the onset of antiferromagnetic order that grows as a percentage of T_N as Co-doping is increased and the superconducting phase is approached. Additionally, as uniaxial pressure is increased within parent and lightly-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 on the first order side of the tricritical point, we observe a decoupling between the onsets of the orthorhombic structural distortion and antiferromagnetism. Our findings place needed constraints on models exploring the nematic susceptibility of the bilayer pnictides in the tetragonal, paramagnetic regime.

Energy-dependent crossover from anisotropic to isotropic magnetic dispersion in lightly-doped La1.96Sr0.04CuO4

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on lightly-doped La$_{1.96}$Sr$_{0.04}$CuO$_{4}$, which shows diagonal incommensurate spin correlations at low temperatures. We previously reported that this crystal, with a single orthorhombic domain, exhibits the "hourglass" dispersion at low energies [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 197001 (2008)]. In this paper, we investigate in detail the energy evolution of the magnetic excitations up to 65 meV. It is found that the anisotropic excitations at low energies, dispersing only along the spin modulation direction, crossover to an isotropic, conical dispersion that resembles spin waves in the parent compound La$_2$CuO$_{4}$. The change from two-fold to full symmetry on crossing the waist of the hourglass reproduces behavior first identified in studies of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We discuss the significance of these results.

Enhanced low-energy magnetic excitations via suppression of the itinerancy in Fe0.98-zCuzTe0.5Se0.5

We have performed resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on three samples of Fe0.98-zCuzTe0.5Se0.5 with z = 0, 0.02, and 0.1. It is found that with increasing Cu doping the sample's resistivity deviates progressively from that of a metal. However, in contrast to expectations that replacing Fe with Cu would suppress the magnetic correlations, the low-energy (no larger than 12 meV) magnetic scattering is enhanced in strength, with greater spectral weight and longer dynamical spin-spin correlation lengths. Such enhancements can be a consequence of either enlarged local moments or a slowing down of the spin fluctuations. In either case, the localization of the conduction states induced by the Cu doping should play a critical role. Our results are not applicable to models that treat 3d transition metal dopants simply as effective electron donors.

Incommensurate dynamic correlations in the quasi-two-dimensional spin liquid BiCu2PO6

We report detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of the frustrated two-leg ladder BiCu2PO6, whose ground state is described as a spin liquid phase with no long-range order down to 6 K. Two branches of steeply dispersing long-lived spin excitations are observed with excitation gaps of Δ_1 = 1.90(9) meV and Δ_2 = 3.95(8) meV. Significant frustrating next-nearest neighbour interactions along the ladder leg drive the minimum of each excitation branch to incommensurate wavevectors ζ_1 = 0.574πand ζ_2 = 0.553πfor the lower and upper energy branches respectively. The temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum near the gap energy is consistent with thermal activation into singly and doubly degenerate excited states. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum as well as earlier thermodynamic data could be consistently explained by the presence of strong anisotropic interactions in the ground state Hamiltonian.

Magnetic Phase Transition in the Low Dimensional Compound BaMn2Si2O7

The structural and magnetic properties of BaMn2Si2O7 have been investigated. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, measured using single crystals, suggest that the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism originating from the loosely coupled Mn2+ chain carrying S=5/2 is present at high temperatures, which is similar to the other quasi-one-dimensional barium silicates, BaM2Si2O7 (M: Cu and Co). The Neel temperature (TN=26 K) is high compared to the magnetic interaction along the chain (J = -6 K). The neutron powder diffraction study has revealed that the magnetic structure is long-ranged with antiferromagnetic arrangement along the chain (c) direction and ferromagnetic arrangement along the a and b axes. The detailed structural analysis suggests that the interchain interaction via Mn-O-Mn bond along the a axis is relatively large, which makes the system behave more two-dimensionally in the ac plane and enhances TN.

Temperature-driven Phase Transformation in Y_3Co: Neutron Scattering and First-principles Studies

Contrary to previous studies that identified the ground state crystal structure of the entire R_3Co series (R is a rare earth) as orthorhombic Pnma, we show that Y_3Co undergoes a structural phase transition at T_t=160K. Single crystal neutron diffraction data reveal that at T_t the trigonal prisms formed by a cobalt atom and its six nearest-neighbor yttrium atoms experience distortions accompanied by notable changes of the Y-Co distances. The formation of the low-temperature phase is accompanied by a pronounced lattice distortion and anomalies seen in heat capacity and resistivity measurements. Density functional theory calculations reveal a dynamical instability of the Pnma structure of Y_3Co. In particular, a transversal acoustic phonon mode along the (00z) direction has imaginary frequencies at z<1/4. Employing inelastic neutron scattering measurements we find a strong damping of the (00z) phonon mode below a critical temperature T_t. The observed structural transformation causes the reduction of dimensionality of electronic bands and decreases the electronic density of states at the Fermi level that identifies Y_3Co as a system with the charge density wave instability.

Ca2Y2Cu5O10: the first frustrated quasi-1D ferromagnet close to criticality

Ca2Y2Cu5O10 is build up from edge-shared CuO4 plaquettes forming spin chains. From inelastic neutron scattering data we extract an in-chain nearest neighbor exchange J1 approximately -170 K and the frustrating next neighbor J2 approximately 32 K interactions, both significantly larger than previous estimates. The ratio alpha= J2/J1 approximately 0.19 places the system very close to the critical point alpha_c=0.25 of the J1-J2 chain, but in the ferromagnetic regime. We establish that the vicinity to criticality only marginally affects the dispersion and coherence of the elementary spin-wave-like magnetic excitations, but instead results in a dramatic T-dependence of high-energy Zhang-Rice singlet excitation intensities.

Magnetic dispersion and anisotropy in multiferroic BiFeO3

We have determined the full magnetic dispersion relations of multiferroic BiFeO3. In particular, two excitation gaps originating from magnetic anisotropies have been clearly observed. The DM interaction supports a strong magneto-electric coupling in this compound.

Partially disordered state and spin-lattice coupling in an S=3/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ag2CrO2

Ag2CrO2 is an S=3/2 frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet without orbital degree of freedom. With decreasing temperature, a 4-sublatice spin state develops. However, a long-range partially disordered state with 5 sublattices abruptly appears at TN=24 K, accompanied by a structural distortion, and persists at least down to 2 K. The spin-lattice coupling stabilizes the anomalous state, which is expected to appear only in limited ranges of further-neighbor interactions and temperature. It was found that the spin-lattice coupling is a common feature in triangular lattice antiferromagnets with multiple-sublattice spin states, since the triangular lattice is elastic.

Signature splitting inversion and backbending in 80Rb

High spin states of 80Rb are studied via the fusion-evaporation reactions 65Cu+19F, 66Zn+18O and 68Zn+16O with the beam energies of 75 MeV, 76 MeV and 80 MeV, respectively. Twenty-three new states with twenty-eight new γtransitions were added to the previously proposed level scheme, where the second negative-parity band is significantly pushed up to spins of 22^{-} and 15^{-} and two new sidebands are built on the known first negative-parity band. Two successive band crossings with frequencies 0.51 MeV and 0.61 MeV in the α=0 branch as well as another one in the α=1 branch of the second negative-parity band are observed for the first time. Signature inversions occur in the positive- and first negative-parity bands at the spins of 11\hbar and 15\hbar, respectively. The signature splitting is seen obviously in the second negative-parity band, but the signature inversion is not observed. It is also found that the structure of the two negative-parity bands is similar to that of its isotone ^{82}Y. Signature inversion in the positive-parity yrast band with configuration πg_{9/2} \otimes νg_{9/2} in this nucleus is discussed using the projected shell model (PSM).

Magnetic excitations in the geometric frustrated multiferroic CuCrO$_2$

In this paper detailed neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum of CuCrO$_2$ in the ordered state below $T_{\rm{N1}}=24.2$ K are presented. The spectra are analyzed using a model Hamiltonian which includes intralayer-exchange up to the next-next-nearest neighbor and interlayer-exchange. We obtain a definite parameter set and show that exchange interaction terms beyond the next-nearest neighbor are important to describe the inelastic excitation spectrum. The magnetic ground state structure generated with our parameter set is in agreement with the structure proposed for CuCrO$_2$ from the results of single crystal diffraction experiments previously published. We argue that the role of the interlayer exchange is crucial to understand the incommensurability of the magnetic structure as well as the spin-charge coupling mechanism.

Magnetic structure of CuCrO2: a single crystal neutron diffraction study

This paper presents results of a recent study of multiferroic \CCO\ by means of single crystal neutron diffraction. This system has two close magnetic phase transitions at $T\nsub{N1}=24.2$ K and $T\nsub{N2}=23.6$ K. The low temperature magnetic structure below $T\nsub{N2}$ is unambiguously determined to be a fully 3-dimensional proper screw. Between $T\nsub{N1}$ and $T\nsub{N2}$ antiferromagnetic order is found that is essentially 2-dimensional. In this narrow temperature range, magnetic near neighbor correlations are still long range in the ($H,K$) plane, whereas nearest neighbors along the $L$-direction are uncorrelated. Thus, the multiferroic state is realized only in the low-temperature 3-dimensional state and not in the 2-dimensional state.

Molecular spin-liquid state in spin-3/2 frustrated spinel HgCr$_2$O$_4$

A hexamer-type spin excitation seen in spinel chromates $A$Cr$_2$O$_4$ ($A$ = Mg, Zn, or Cd) is the representative spin-liquid-like state caused by geometrical frustration. To clarify an origin of the state, we comparatively studied spin excitations in an isomorphic material HgCr$_2$O$_4$ by inelastic neutron scattering, and observed a different molecular-type excitation. Numerical analyses performed using model Hamiltonians suggest that these two types of spin excitations originate from a spin-3/2 molecular singlet hidden in a magnetically ordered phase. The difference between the molecular types is explained by the difference in the kind of exchange interactions occurring in the chromates.

Synchrotron x-ray study of lattice vibrations in CdCr2O4

Using inelastic x-ray scattering we have investigated lattice vibrations in a geometric frustrated system CdCr2O4 that upon cooling undergoes a spin-Peierls phase transition at TN = 7.8 K from a cubic and paramagnetic to a tetragonal and Neel state. Phonon modes measured around Brillouin zone boundaries show energy shifts when the transition occurs. Our analysis shows that the shifting can be understood as the ordinary effects of the lowering of the crystal symmetry.

Competing magnetic ground states in non-superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCrx)2As2

We present neutron diffraction measurements on single crystal samples of non-superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCrx)2As2 as a function of Cr-doping for 0<=x<=0.47. The average SDW moment is independent of concentration for x<=0.2 and decreases rapidly for x>=0.3. For concentrations in excess of 30% chromium, we find a new G-type antiferromagnetic phase which rapidly becomes the dominant magnetic ground state. Strong magnetism is observed for all concentrations measured and competition between these ordered states and superconductivity naturally explains the absence of superconductivity in the Cr-doped materials.

Degradation of superconductivity and spin fluctuations by electron over-doping in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$

Low energy spin fluctuations are studied for the electron-doped Fe-based superconductor LaFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by inelastic neutron scattering up to the energy transfer of w = 15 meV using polycrystalline samples. Superconducting samples (x=0.057, Tc=25 K and x=0.082, Tc=29 K) show dynamical spin susceptibility chi"(w) almost comparable with the parent sample's. However chi"(w) is almost vanished in the x=0.158 sample where the superconductivity is highly suppressed. These results are compatible with the theoretical suggestions that the spin fluctuation plays an important role for the superconductivity.

Disordered Ground State and Magnetic Field-Induced Long-Range Order in an S=3/2 Antiferromagnetic Honeycomb Lattice Compound Bi3Mn4O12(NO3)

Bi3Mn4O12(NO3), in which the Mn4+ ions carry S=3/2, is the first honeycomb lattice system that shows no long-range magnetic order. Using neutron scattering, we have determined that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop at low temperatures. Applied magnetic fields induce a magnetic transition, in which the short-range order abruptly expands into a long-range order.

Universal magnetic structure of the half-magnetization phase in Cr-based spinels

Using an elastic neutron scattering technique under a pulsed magnetic field up to 30 T, we determined the magnetic structure in the half-magnetization plateau phase in the spinel CdCr$_2$O$_4$. The magnetic structure has a cubic $P4_3$32 symmetry, which is the same as that observed in HgCr$_2$O$_4$. This suggests that there is a universal field induced spin-lattice coupling mechanism at work in the Cr-based spinels.

Spin-lattice instability to a fractional magnetization state in the spinel HgCr2O4

Magnetic systems are fertile ground for the emergence of exotic states when the magnetic interactions cannot be satisfied simultaneously due to the topology of the lattice - a situation known as geometrical frustration. Spinels, AB2O4, can realize the most highly frustrated network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Several novel states have been discovered in spinels, such as composite spin clusters and novel charge-ordered states. Here we use neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering to characterize the fractional magnetization state of HgCr2O4 under an external magnetic field, H. When the field is applied in its Neel ground state, a phase transition occurs at H ~ 10 Tesla at which each tetrahedron changes from a canted Neel state to a fractional spin state with the total spin, Stet, of S/2 and the lattice undergoes orthorhombic to cubic symmetry change. Our results provide the microscopic one-to-one correspondence between the spin state and the lattice distortion.

Neutron Electric Dipole Momento in Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

The effect of the "chromo-electric" dipole moment on the electric dipole moment(EDM) of the neutron is studied in the two-Higgs-doublet model. The Weinberg's operator $O_{3g}=GG\t G$ and the operator $O_{qg}=\bar qσ\t Gq$ are both investigated in the cases of $\tan\b\gg 1$, $\tan\b\ll 1$ and $\tan\b\simeq 1$. The neutron EDM is considerably reduced due to the destructive contribution with two light Higgs scalars exchanges.
