Measurement of muon neutrino induced charged current interactions without charged pions in the final state using a new T2K off-axis near detector WAGASCI-BabyMIND

We report a flux-integrated cross section measurement of muon neutrino interactions on water and hydrocarbon via charged current reactions without charged pions in the final state with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector which was installed in the T2K near detector hall in 2018. The detector is located 1.5$^\circ$ off-axis and is exposed to a more energetic neutrino flux than ND280, another T2K near detector, which is located at a different off-axis position. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be $1.26 \pm 0.18\,(stat.+syst.) \times 10^{-39} $ $\mathrm{cm^{2}/nucleon}$ on CH and $1.44 \pm 0.21\,(stat.+syst.) \times 10^{-39} $ $\mathrm{cm^{2}/nucleon}$ on H$_{2}$O. These results are compared to model predictions provided by the NEUT v5.3.2 and GENIE v2.8.0 MC generators and the measurements are compatible with these models. Differential cross sections in muon momentum and cosine of the muon scattering angle are also reported. This is the first such measurement reported with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector and utilizes the 2020 and 2021 datasets.

Results from the T2K experiment on neutrino mixing including a new far detector $μ$-like sample

We have made improved measurements of three-flavor neutrino mixing with 19.7(16.3)$\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti-)neutrino-enhanced beam modes. A new sample of muon-neutrino events with tagged pions has been added at the far detector, as well as new proton and photon-tagged samples at the near detector. Significant improvements have been made to the flux and neutrino interaction modeling. T2K data continue to prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ with a near-maximal value of the charge-parity violating phase with best-fit values in the normal ordering of $δ_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{CP}}=-2.18\substack{+1.22 \\ -0.47}$, $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.559\substack{+0.018 \\ -0.078}$ and $Δm^2_{32}=(+2.506\substack{+0.039 \\ -0.052})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$.

A New Charged Lepton Flavor Violation Program at Fermilab

The muon has played a central role in establishing the Standard Model of particle physics, and continues to provide valuable information about the nature of new physics. A new complex at Fermilab, the Advanced Muon Facility, would provide the world's most intense positive and negative muon beams by exploiting the full potential of PIP-II and the Booster upgrade. This facility would enable a broad muon physics program, including studies of charged lepton flavor violation, muonium-antimuonium transitions, a storage ring muon EDM experiment, and muon spin rotation experiments. This document describes a staged realization of this complex, together with a series of next-generation experiments to search for charged lepton flavor violation.

Commissioning of the PADME experiment with a positron beam

The PADME experiment is designed to search for a hypothetical dark photon $A^{\prime}$ produced in positron-electron annihilation using a bunched positron beam at the Beam Test Facility of the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The expected sensitivity to the $A^{\prime}$-photon mixing parameter $ε$ is 10$^{-3}$, for $A^{\prime}$ mass $\le$ 23.5 MeV/$c^{2}$ after collecting $\sim 10^{13}$ positrons-on-target. This paper presents the PADME detector status after commissioning in July 2019. In addition, the software algorithms employed to reconstruct physics objects, such as photons and charged particles, and the calibration procedures adopted are illustrated in detail. The results show that the experimental apparatus reaches the design performance, and is able to identify and measure standard electromagnetic processes, such as positron Bremsstrahlung, electron-positron annihilation into two photons.

Investigation of the MicroBooNE neutrino cross sections on Argon

Experimental data of charged current inclusive neutrino cross sections on argon as a function of different variables have recently appeared. We have compared them to our theoretical approach. Overall we find an agreement in spite of a tendency of underestimation in some specific regions. A new aspect is the availability of data in terms of the energy transfer to the nucleus, which allows a better separation of the different reaction mechanisms. We explain the deterioration of agreement in specific kinematical conditions by the absence in our model of two-pion production and other inelastic channels, more important for MicroBooNE than for T2K.

Mu2e-II: Muon to electron conversion with PIP-II

An observation of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) would be unambiguous evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. The Mu2e and COMET experiments, under construction, are designed to push the sensitivity to CLFV in the mu to e conversion process to unprecedented levels. Whether conversion is observed or not, there is a strong case to be made for further improving sensitivity, or for examining the process on additional target materials. Mu2e-II is a proposed upgrade to Mu2e, with at least an additional order of magnitude in sensitivity to the conversion rate over Mu2e. The approach and challenges for this proposal are summarized. Mu2e-II may be regarded as the next logical step in a continued high-intensity muon program at FNAL.

Precision tests of Quantum Mechanics and CPT symmetry with entangled neutral kaons at KLOE

The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process $ϕ\rightarrow K_S K_L \rightarrowπ^+π^-π^+π^-$, which exhibits the characteristic Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into $π^+π^-$ at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Frascati $ϕ$-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb$^{-1}$, i.e. to about $1.7 \times 10^9$ $ϕ\rightarrow K_S K_L$ decays produced. From the fit of the observed $Δt$ distribution, being $Δt$ the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which -- in the most optimistic scenarios -- quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models.

Scintillator ageing of the T2K near detectors from 2010 to 2021

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator.

Sensitivity of the Upgraded T2K Near Detector to constrain neutrino and anti-neutrino interactions with no mesons in the final state by exploiting nucleon-lepton correlations

The most challenging and impactful uncertainties that future accelerator-based measurements of neutrino oscillations must overcome stem from our limited ability to model few-GeV neutrino-nucleus interactions. In particular, it is crucial to better understand the nuclear effects which can alter the final state topology and kinematics of neutrino interactions, inducing possible biases in neutrino energy reconstruction. The upgraded ND280 near detector of the T2K experiment will directly confront neutrino interaction uncertainties using a new suite of detectors with full polar angle acceptance, improved spatial resolutions, neutron detection capabilities and reduced tracking thresholds. In this manuscript we explore the physics sensitivity that can be expected from the upgraded detector, specifically focusing on the additional sensitivity to nuclear effects and how they can be constrained with future measurements of kinematic variables constructed using both outgoing lepton and nucleon kinematics.

Upper limit on the $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}$ branching fraction with the KLOE experiment

Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb$^{-1}$ $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Frascati $ϕ$-factory, a search for the $P$- and $CP$-violating decay $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}$ has been performed. Radiative $ϕ\toηγ$ decay is exploited to access the $η$ mesons. No signal is observed in the $π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90\% confidence level is determined to be ${\mathcal B}(η\toπ^{+}π^{-})<4.9\times10^{-6}$, which is approximately three times smaller than the previous KLOE result. From the combination of these two measurements we get ${\mathcal B}(η\toπ^{+}π^{-}) < 4.4\times10^{-6}$ at 90\% confidence level.

Measurement of the branching fraction for the decay $K_S \to πμν$ with the KLOE detector

Based on a sample of 300 million $K_S$ mesons produced in $ϕ\to K_L K_S$ decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay $K_S \to πμν$. The $K_S$ mesons are identified by the interaction of $K_L$ mesons in the detector. The $K_S \to πμν$ decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of $K_L \to πμν$ decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds $7223 \pm 180$ signal events. Normalising to the $K_S \to π^+ π^-$ decay events the result for the branching fraction is $\mathcal{B}(K_S \to πμν) = (4.56 \pm 0.11_{\rm stat} \pm 0.17_{\rm syst})\times10^{-4}$.

Assessing the role of nuclear effects in the interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly

We study the impact of the effect of multinucleon interactions in the reconstruction of the neutrino energy on the fit of the MiniBooNE data in terms of neutrino oscillations. We obtain some improvement of the fit of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess in the framework of two-neutrino oscillations and a shift of the allowed region in the $\sin^2 2\vartheta$--$Δ{m}^2$ plane towards smaller values of $\sin^2 2\vartheta$ and larger values of $Δ{m}^2$. However this effect is not enough to solve the problem of the appearance-disappearance tension in the global fit of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data.

ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $π^0π^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to π^\pm γγ$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT description.

Design and status of the Mu2e electromagnetic calorimeter

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims at measuring the neutrinoless conversion of a negative muon into an electron and reach a single event sensitivity of 2.5x10^{-17} after three years of data taking. The monoenergetic electron produced in the final state, is detected by a high precision tracker and a crystal calorimeter, all embedded in a large superconducting solenoid (SD) surrounded by a cosmic ray veto system. The calorimeter is complementary to the tracker, allowing an independent trigger and powerful particle identification, while seeding the track reconstruction and contributing to remove background tracks mimicking the signal. In order to match these requirements, the calorimeter should have an energy resolution of O(5)% and a time resolution better than 500 ps at 100 MeV. The baseline solution is a calorimeter composed of two disks of BaF2 crystals read by UV extended, solar blind, Avalanche Photodiode (APDs), which are under development from a JPL, Caltech, RMD consortium. In this paper, the calorimeter design, the R&D studies carried out so far and the status of engineering are described. A backup alternative setup consisting of a pure CsI crystal matrix read by UV extended Hamamatsu MPPC's is also presented.

Electron-neutrino scattering off nuclei from two different theoretical perspectives

We analyze charged-current electron-neutrino cross sections on Carbon. We consider two different theoretical approaches, on one hand the Continuum Random Phase Approximation (CRPA) which allows a description of giant resonances and quasielastic excitations, on the other hand the RPA-based calculations which are able to describe multinucleon emission and coherent and incoherent pion production as well as quasielastic excitations. We compare the two approaches in the genuine quasielastic channel, and find a satisfactory agreement between them at large energies while at low energies the collective giant resonances show up only in the CRPA approach. We also compare electron-neutrino cross sections with the corresponding muon-neutrino ones in order to investigate the impact of the different charged-lepton masses. Finally, restricting to the RPA-based approach we compare the sum of quasielastic, multinucleon emission, coherent and incoherent one-pion production cross sections (folded with the electron-neutrino T2K flux) with the charged-current inclusive electron-neutrino differential cross sections on Carbon measured by T2K. We find a good agreement with the data. The multinucleon component is needed in order to reproduce the T2K electron-neutrino inclusive cross sections.

Entangling macroscopic diamonds at room temperature: Bounds on the continuous-spontaneous-localization parameters

A recent experiment [K. C. Lee et al., Science 334, 1253 (2011)] succeeded in detecting entanglement between two macroscopic specks of diamonds, separated by a macroscopic distance, at room temperature. This impressive results is a further confirmation of the validity of quantum theory in (at least parts of) the mesoscopic and macroscopic domain, and poses a challenge to collapse models, which predict a violation of the quantum superposition principle, which is the bigger the larger the system. We analyze the experiment in the light of such models. We will show that the bounds placed by experimental data are weaker than those coming from matter-wave interferometry and non-interferometric tests of collapse models.

Impact of low-energy nuclear excitations on neutrino-nucleus scattering at MiniBooNE and T2K kinematics

[Background] Meticulous modeling of neutrino-nucleus interactions is essential to achieve the unprecedented precision goals of present and future accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments. [Purpose] Confront our calculations of charged-current quasielastic cross section with the measurements of MiniBooNE and T2K, and to quantitatively investigate the role of nuclear-structure effects, in particular, low-energy nuclear excitations in forward muon scattering. [Method] The model takes the mean-field (MF) approach as the starting point, and solves Hartree-Fock (HF) equations using a Skyrme (SkE2) nucleon-nucleon interaction. Long-range nuclear correlations are taken into account by means of the continuum random-phase approximation (CRPA) framework. [Results] We present our calculations on flux-folded double differential, and flux-unfolded total cross sections off $^{12}$C and compare them with MiniBooNE and (off-axis) T2K measurements. We discuss the importance of low-energy nuclear excitations for the forward bins. [Conclusions] The CRPA predictions describe the gross features of the measured cross sections. They underpredict the data (more in the neutrino than in the antineutrino case) because of the absence of processes beyond pure quasielastic scattering in our model. At very forward muon scattering, low-energy nuclear excitations ($ω< $ 50 MeV) account for nearly 50% of the flux-folded cross section.

Large-scale deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations of the $γ$-ray strength function using the Gogny force

Valuable theoretical predictions of nuclear dipole excitations in the whole chart are of great interest for different nuclear applications, including in particular nuclear astrophysics. Here we present large-scale calculations of the $E1$ $γ$-ray strength function obtained in the framework of the axially-symmetric deformed QRPA based on the finite-range Gogny force. This approach is applied to even-even nuclei, the strength function for odd nuclei being derived by interpolation. The convergence with respect to the adopted number of harmonic oscillator shells and the cut-off energy introduced in the 2-quasiparticle (2-$qp$) excitation space is analyzed. The calculations performed with two different Gogny interactions, namely D1S and D1M, are compared. A systematic energy shift of the $E1$ strength is found for D1M relative to D1S, leading to a lower energy centroid and a smaller energy-weighted sum rule for D1M. When comparing with experimental photoabsorption data, the Gogny-QRPA predictions are found to overestimate the giant dipole energy by typically $\sim$2 MeV. Despite the microscopic nature of our self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus QRPA calculation, some phenomenological corrections need to be included to take into account the effects beyond the standard 2-$qp$ QRPA excitations and the coupling between the single-particle and low-lying collective phonon degrees of freedom. For this purpose, three prescriptions of folding procedure are considered and adjusted to reproduce experimental photoabsorption data at best. All of them are shown to lead to rather similar predictions of the $E1$ strength, both at low energies and for exotic neutron-rich nuclei. Predictions of $γ$-ray strength functions and Maxwellian-averaged neutron capture rates for the whole Sn isotopic chain are also discussed and compared with previous theoretical calculations.

Limit on the production of a new vector boson in $\mathrm{e^+ e^-}\rightarrow {\rm U}γ$, U$\rightarrow π^+π^-$ with the KLOE experiment

The recent interest in a light gauge boson in the framework of an extra U(1) symmetry motivates searches in the mass range below 1 GeV. We present a search for such a particle, the dark photon, in ${\rm e^+ e^-}\rightarrow {\rm U}γ$, U$\rightarrow π^+π^-$ based on 28 million $\mathrm{e^+ e^-} \rightarrow π^+ π^-γ$ events collected at DA$Φ$NE by the KLOE experiment. The $π^+ π^-$ production by initial-state radiation compensates for a loss of sensitivity of previous KLOE ${\rm U} \rightarrow \mathrm{e^+ e^-}$, $μ^+μ^-$ searches due to the small branching ratios in the $ρ-ω$ resonance region. We found no evidence for a signal and set a limit at 90\% CL on the mixing strength between the photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, in the U mass range between $527$ and $987$~MeV. Above 700 MeV this new limit is more stringent than previous ones.

Measurement of the $ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-$ transition form factor with the KLOE detector

A measurement of the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay $ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-$ with the KLOE experiment is presented. A sample of $\sim 9500$ signal events was selected from a data set of 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} \sim m_ϕ$ collected at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. These events were used to obtain the first measurement of the transition form factor $| F_{ϕπ^0}(q^2) |$ and a new measurement of the branching ratio of the decay: $\rm{BR}\,(ϕ\to π^0 e^+e^-) = (\,1.35 \pm 0.05^{\,\,+0.05}_{\,\,-0.10}\,) \times 10 ^{-5}$. The result improves significantly on previous measurements and is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Measurement of time resolution of the Mu2e LYSO calorimeter prototype

In this paper we present the time resolution measurements of the Lutetium-Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) calorimeter prototype for the Mu2e experiment. The measurements have been performed using the $e^-$ beam of the Beam Test Facility (BTF) in Frascati, Italy in the energy range from 100 to 400 MeV. The calorimeter prototype consisted of twenty five 30x30x130 mm$^3$, LYSO crystals read out by 10x10 mm$^2$ Hamamatsu Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs). The energy dependence of the measured time resolution can be parametrized as $σ_{t}(E)=a/\sqrt{E/\mathrm{GeV}} \oplus b$, with the stochastic and constant terms $a=(51\pm1)$ ps and $b=(10\pm4)$ ps, respectively. This corresponds to the time resolution of ($162\pm4$) ps at 100 MeV.

Nuclear response functions with finite range Gogny force: tensor terms and instabilities

A fully-antisymmetrized random phase approximation calculation employing the continued fraction technique is performed to study nuclear matter response functions with the finite range Gogny force. The most commonly used parameter sets of this force, as well as some recent generalizations that include the tensor terms are considered and the corresponding response functions are shown. The calculations are performed at the first and second order in the continued fraction expansion and the explicit expressions for the second order tensor contributions are given. Comparison between first and second order continued fraction expansion results are provided. The differences between the responses obtained at the two orders turn to be more pronounced for the forces including tensor terms than for the standard Gogny ones. In the vector channels the responses calculated with Gogny forces including tensor terms are characterized by a large heterogeneity, reflecting the different choices for the tensor part of the interaction. For sake of comparison the response functions obtained considering a G-matrix based nuclear interaction are also shown. As first application of the present calculation, the possible existence of spurious finite-size instabilities of the Gogny forces with or without tensor terms has been investigated. The positive conclusion is that all the Gogny forces, but the GT2 one, are free of spurious finite-size instabilities. In perspective, the tool developed in the present paper can be inserted in the fitting procedure to construct new Gogny-type forces.

The Dalitz plot density is parametrized as a polynomial expansion up to cubic terms in the normalized dimensionless variables $X$ and $Y$. The statistical uncertainty of all parameters is improved by a factor two with respect to earlier measurements.

K$^-$ absorption on two nucleons and ppK$^-$ bound state search in the $Σ^0$p final state

We report the measurement of K$^-$ absorption processes in the $Σ^0$p final state and the first exclusive measurement of the two nucleon absorption (2NA) with the KLOE detector. The 2NA process without further interactions is found to be 12\% of the sum of all other contributing processes, including absorption on three and more nucleons or 2NA followed by final state interactions with the residual nucleons. We also determine the possible contribution of the ppK$^-$ bound state to the $Σ^0$p final state. Limit on the production of a low-mass vector boson in $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} \to \mathrm{U}γ$, $\mathrm{U} \to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ with the KLOE experiment

The existence of a new force beyond the Standard Model is compelling because it could explain several striking astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. We searched for the light vector mediator of this dark force, the $\mathrm{U}$ boson, with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$ collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 1.54 fb$^{-1}$, we studied the process $\mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-} \to \mathrm{U}γ$, with $\mathrm{U} \to \mathrm{e}^{+}\mathrm{e}^{-}$, using radiative-return to search for a resonant peak in the dielectron invariant-mass distribution. We did not find evidence for a signal, and set a 90\%~CL upper limit on the mixing strength between the Standard Model photon and the dark photon, $\varepsilon^2$, at $10^{-6}$--$10^{-4}$ in the 5--520~MeV/c$^2$ mass range.

Low-energy excitations and quasielastic contribution to electron-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus scattering in the continuum random phase approximation

We present a detailed study of a continuum random phase approximation approach to quasielastic electron-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus scattering. The formalism is validated by confronting ($e,e'$) cross-section predictions with electron scattering data for the nuclear targets $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{40}$Ca, in the kinematic region where quasielastic scattering is expected to dominate. We examine the longitudinal and transverse contributions to $^{12}$C($e,e'$) and compare them with the available data. Further, we study the $^{12}$C($ν_μ,μ^{-}$) cross sections relevant for accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments. We pay special attention to low-energy excitations which can account for non-negligible contributions in measurements, and require a beyond-Fermi-gas formalism.

Neutrino versus antineutrino cross sections and CP violation

We discuss the nuclear interactions of neutrinos versus those of antineutrinos, a relevant comparison for CP violation experiments in the neutrino sector. We consider the MiniBooNE quasielastic-like double differential neutrinos and antineutrinos cross sections which are flux dependent and hence specific to the MiniBooNE set-up. We combine them introducing their sum and their difference. We show that the last combination can bring a general information, which can be exploited in other experiments, on the nuclear matrix elements of the axial vector interference term. Our theoretical model reproduces well the two cross sections combinations. This confirms the need for a sizeable multinucleon component in particular in the interference term.

We show the validity of the formalism by confronting inclusive ($e,e'$) cross sections with the available data. We calculate flux-folded cross sections for charged-current quasielastic antineutrino scattering off $^{12}$C and compare them with the MiniBooNE cross-section measurements. Gamow-Teller strength in deformed nuclei within the self-consistent charge-exchange quasi-particle random-phase approximation with the Gogny force

The charge-exchange excitations in nuclei are studied within the fully self-consistent proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation using the finite-range Gogny interaction. No additional parameters beyond those included in the effective nuclear force are included. Axially symmetric deformations are consistently taken into account, both in the description of the ground states and spin-isospin excitations. We focus on the isobaric analog and Gamow-Teller resonances. A comparison of the predicted strength distributions to the existing experimental data is presented and the role of nuclear deformation analyzed. The Gamow-Teller strength is used to estimate the beta-decay half-life of nuclei for which experimental data exist. A satisfactory agreement with experimental half-lives is found and justifies the additional study of the exotic neutron-rich N=82, 126 and 184 isotonic chains of relevance for the r-process nucleosynthesis.

Inclusive and pion production neutrino-nucleus cross sections

We analyze the experimental data on the inclusive double differential cross section by neutrinos charged current, measured by T2K, with the same model which was successful for the MiniBooNE quasielastic cross sections. As in our previous analysis the multinucleon component is needed in order to reproduce the data. For the total cross section our evaluation is smaller than the SciBooNE data above 1 GeV. This indicates the opening of a new channel not included in our evaluation, presumably the two pion emission channel. We also check that our description holds for the exclusive single pion production channel by confronting our evaluation with the MiniBooNE double differential cross section for a single charged pion and the Q^2 distribution. Both are compatible with data.

Linear response theory and neutrino mean free path using Brussels-Montreal Skyrme functionals

The Brussels-Montreal Skyrme functionals have been successful to describe properties of both finite nuclei and infinite homogeneous nuclear matter. In their latest version, these functionals have been equipped with two extra density-dependent terms in order to reproduce simultaneously ground state properties of nuclei and infinite nuclear matter properties while avoiding at the same time the arising of ferromagnetic instabilities. In the present article, we extend our previous results of the linear response theory to include such extra terms at both zero and finite temperature in pure neutron matter. The resulting formalism is then applied to derive the neutrino mean free path. The predictions from the Brussels-Montreal Skyrme functionals are compared with ab-initio methods.

The data set of 1.7 fb-1 of e+e- collisions at sqrt(s)~Mphi contains a clear conversion decay signal of ~31,000 events from which we measured a value of BR(phi -> eta e+e-)=(1.075+-0.007+-0.038)x10-4. The same sample is used to determine the transition form factor by a fit to the e+e- invariant mass spectrum, obtaining b(phi eta) =(1.17 +- 0.10 + 0.07) GeV-2, that improves by a factor of five the precision of the previous measurement and is in good agreement with VMD expectations.

Test of CPT and Lorentz symmetry in entangled neutral kaons with the KLOE experiment

Neutral kaon pairs produced in phi decays in anti-symmetric entangled state can be exploited to search for violation of CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance. We present an analysis of the CP-violating process phi->K_S K_L->pi+pi-pi+pi- based on 1.7 fb-1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the Frascati phi-factory DAFNE. The data are used to perform a measurement of the CPT-violating parameters Delta_amu for neutral kaons in the contest of the Standard Model Extension framework. The parameters measured in the reference frame of the fixed stars are: Delta_ao = (-6.0 +- 7.7_{stat} +- 3.1_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ax = ( 0.9 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.6_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_ay = (-2.0 +- 1.5_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV Delta_az = ( 3.1 +- 1.7_{stat} +- 0.5_{syst}) x 10^{-18} GeV These are presently the most precise measurements in the quark sector of the Standard Model Extension.

A new limit on the CP violating decay KS -> 3pi0 with the KLOE experiment

We have carried out a new direct search for the CP violating decay KS -> 3pi0 with 1.7 fb^-1 of e+e- collisions collected by the KLOE detector at the phi-factory DAFNE. We have searched for this decay in a sample of about 5.9 x 10^8 KS KL events tagging the KS by means of the KL interaction in the calorimeter and requiring six prompt photons. With respect to our previous search, the analysis has been improved by increasing of a factor four the tagged sample and by a more effective background rejection of fake KS tags and spurious clusters. We find no candidates in data and simulated background samples, while we expect 0.12 standard model events. Normalizing to the number of KS -> 2pi0 events in the same sample, we set the upper limit on BR(KS -> 3pi0 < 2.6 x 10^-8 at 90% C.L., five times lower than the previous limit. We also set the upper limit on the eta_000 parameter, |eta_000 | < 0.0088 at 90% C.L., improving by a factor two the latest direct measurement.

Limit on the production of a light vector gauge boson in phi meson decays with the KLOE detector

We present a new limit on the production of a light dark-force mediator with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. This boson, called U, has been searched for in the decay phi --> eta U, U --> e+ e-, analyzing the decay eta --> pi0 pi0 pi0 in a data sample of 1.7 fb-1. No structures are observed in the e+e- invariant mass distribution over the background. This search is combined with a previous result obtained from the decay eta --> pi+ pi- pi0, increasing the sensitivity. We set an upper limit at 90% C.L. on the ratio between the U boson coupling constant and the fine structure constant of alpha'/alpha < 1.7x10^-5 for 30<M_U<400 MeV and alpha'/alpha < 8x10^-6 for the sub-region 50<M_U<210 MeV. This result assumes the Vector Meson Dominance expectations for the phietagamma^* transition form factor. The dependence of this limit on the transition form factor has also been studied.

Precision measurement of $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-γ)/σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow μ^+μ^-γ)$ and determination of the $π^+π^-$ contribution to the muon anomaly with the KLOE detector

We have measured the ratio $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-γ)/σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow μ^+μ^-γ)$, with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE for a total integrated luminosity of $\sim$ 240 pb$^{-1}$. Quasielastic and multinucleon excitations in antineutrino-nucleus interactions

We investigate the MiniBooNE recent data on the antineutrino nucleus interaction, using the same theoretical description with the same parameters as in previous works on neutrino interactions. A similar agreement is achieved for the Q^2 distribution.

This contribution includes brief description of results of recent analysis of the KLOE data aimed at (i) the search for the dark matter boson, (ii) determination of the hadronic and light-by-light contributions to the g-2 muon anomaly and (iii) tests of QCD anomalies.

The EUROnu Project

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ+ and μ- beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular 6He and 18Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive.

Discovery of a new isomeric state in $^{68}$Ni: Evidence for a highly-deformed proton intruder state

We report on the observation of a new isomeric state in $^{68}$Ni. We suggest that the newly observed state at 168(1) keV above the first 2$^+$ state is a $π(2p-2h)$ 0$^{+}$ state across the major Z=28 shell gap. Comparison with theoretical calculations indicates a pure proton intruder configuration and the deduced low-lying structure of this key nucleus suggests a possible shape coexistence scenario involving a highly deformed state.

Energy reconstruction effects in neutrino oscillation experiments and implications for the analysis

Data on neutrino oscillation often involve reconstructed neutrino energies while the analysis implies the real neutrino energy. The corrections corresponding to the transformation from real to reconstructed energy are discussed in the case of Cherenkov detectors where multinucleon events appear as quasielastic ones. These corrections show up as a tendency for the events to escape the region of high flux, with a clear preference for the low energy side. This is an effect of the multinucleon component of the quasielastic cross section. We have applied our corrections to the T2K and MiniBooNE data for electron appearance or $ν_μ$ disappearance data. We show that the inclusion of this correction in the analysis is expected to lead to an increase of the best fit oscillation mass parameters, particularly pronounced for the MiniBooNE neutrino data. This inclusion in the analysis of the MiniBooNE neutrino data should improve the compatibility with the existing constraints.

Measurement of Γ(η-> π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η-> π^+π^-π^0) with the KLOE Detector

The ratio R_η=Γ(η-> π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η-> π^+π^-π^0) has been measured by analyzing 22 million ϕ\to ηγdecays collected by the KLOE experiment at DA\PhiNE, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb^{-1}. The η\to π^+π^-γproceeds both via the ρresonant contribution, and possibly a non-resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Our result, R_η= 0.1856\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0028_{syst}, points out a sizable contribution of the direct term to the total width. The di-pion invariant mass for the η-> π^+π^-γdecay could be described in a model-independent approach in terms of a single free parameter, α. Measurement of η meson production in γγ interactions and Γ(η-->γγ) with the KLOE detector

We present a measurement of η meson production in photon-photon interactions produced by electron-positron beams colliding with \sqrt{s}=1 GeV. The measurement is done with the KLOE detector at the ϕ-factory DAΦNE with an integrated luminosity of 0.24 fb^{-1}. The e^+e^- --> e^+e^-η cross section is measured without detecting the outgoing electron and positron, selecting the decays η-->π^+π^-π^0 and η-->π^0π^0π^0. The most relevant background is due to e^+e^- --> ηγ when the monochromatic photon escapes detection. The cross section for this process is measured as σ(e^+e^- -->ηγ) = (856 \pm 8_{stat} \pm 16_{syst}) pb. The combined result for the e^+e^- -->e^+e^-η cross section is σ(e^+e^- -->e^+e^-η) = (32.72 \pm 1.27_{stat} \pm 0.70_{syst}) pb. From this we derive the partial width Γ(η-->γγ) = (520 \pm 20_{stat} \pm 13_{syst}) eV. This is in agreement with the world average and is the most precise measurement to date.

Muon capture in the front end of the IDS neutrino factory

We discuss the design of the muon capture front end of the neutrino factory International Design Study. In the front end, a proton bunch on a target creates secondary pions that drift into a capture transport channel, decaying into muons. A sequence of rf cavities forms the resulting muon beams into strings of bunches of differing energies, aligns the bunches to (nearly) equal central energies, and initiates ionization cooling. The muons are then accelerated to high energy where their decays provide neutrino beams. For the International Design Study (IDS), a baseline design must be developed and optimized for an engineering and cost study. We present a baseline design that can be used to establish the scope of a future neutrino Factory facility.

Neutrino energy reconstruction problems and neutrino oscillations

We discuss the accuracy of the usual procedure for neutrino energy reconstruction which is based on the quasielastic kinematics. Our results are described in terms of a probability distribution for a real neutrino energy value. Several factors are responsible of the deviations from the reconstructed value. The main one is the multinucleon component of the neutrino interaction which in the case of Cherenkov detectors enters as a quasielastic cross section, increasing the mean neutrino energy which can differ appreciably from the reconstructed value. As an application we derive, for excess electron events attributed to the conversion of muon neutrinos, the true neutrino energy distribution based on the experimental one which is given in terms of the reconstructed value. The result is a reshaping effect. For MiniBooNE the low energy peak is suppressed and shifted at higher energies, which may influence the interpretation in terms of oscillation. For T2K at the Super Kamiokande far detector the reshaping translates into a narrowing of the energy distribution.

Nuclear response for the Skyrme effective interaction with zero-range tensor terms. III. Neutron matter and neutrino propagation

The formalism of the linear response for the Skyrme energy density functional including tensor terms derived in articles [1,2] for nuclear matter is applied here to the case of pure neutron matter. As in article [2] we present analytical results for the response function in all channels, the Landau parameters and the odd-power sum rules. Special emphasis is given to the inverse energy weighted sum rule because it can be used to detect non physical instabilities. Typical examples are discussed and numerical results shown. Moreover, as a direct application, neutrino propagation in neutron matter is investigated through its neutrino mean free path at zero temperature. This quantity turns out to be very sensitive to the tensor terms of the Skyrme energy density functional.

Low-energy dipole excitations in neon isotopes and N=16 isotones within the quasiparticle random phase approximation and the Gogny force

Low-energy dipole excitations in neon isotopes and N=16 isotones are calculated with a fully consistent axially-symmetric-deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach based on Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) states. The same Gogny D1S effective force has been used both in HFB and QRPA calculations. The microscopical structure of these low-lying resonances, as well as the behavior of proton and neutron transition densities, are investigated in order to determine the isoscalar or isovector nature of the excitations. It is found that the N=16 isotones 24O, 26Ne, 28Mg, and 30Si are characterized by a similar behavior. The occupation of the 2s_1/2 neutron orbit turns out to be crucial, leading to nontrivial transition densities and to small but finite collectivity. Some low-lying dipole excitations of 28Ne and 30Ne, characterized by transitions involving the neutron 1d_3/2 state, present a more collective behavior and isoscalar transition densities. A collective proton low-lying excitation is identified in the 18Ne nucleus.

Measurement of $Γ(η\to π^+π^-γ)/Γ(η\to π^+π^-π^0)$ with KLOE experiment

The $η\to π^+π^-γ$ process is supposed to proceed both via a resonant contribution, mediated by the $ρ$ meson, and a non resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Neutrino and antineutrino quasielastic interactions with nuclei

We investigate the interaction of neutrinos and antineutrinos with nuclei. We explore in particular the role played by the multinucleon excitations which can contaminate the quasielastic cross section. For neutrinos the multinucleon term produces a sizable increase of the quasielastic cross section. Part of the effect arises from tensor correlations. For antineutrinos this influence is smaller owing to the axial-vector interference which increases the relative importance of the terms which are not affected by these multinucleon excitations.

Proposal for taking data with the KLOE-2 detector at the DA$Φ$NE collider upgraded in energy

This document reviews the physics program of the KLOE-2 detector at DA$Φ$NE upgraded in energy and provides a simple solution to run the collider above the $ϕ$-peak (up to 2, possibly 2.5 GeV). It is shown how a precise measurement of the multihadronic cross section in the energy region up to 2 (possibly 2.5) GeV would have a major impact on the tests of the Standard Model through a precise determination of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the effective fine-structure constant at the $M_Z$ scale. With a luminosity of about $10^{32}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, DA$Φ$NE upgraded in energy can perform a scan in the region from 1 to 2.5 GeV in one year by collecting an integrated luminosity of 20 pb$^{-1}$ (corresponding to a few days of data taking) for single point, assuming an energy step of 25 MeV. A few years of data taking in this region would provide important tests of QCD and effective theories by $γγ$ physics with open thresholds for pseudo-scalar (like the $η'$), scalar ($f_0,f'_0$, etc...) and axial-vector ($a_1$, etc...) mesons; vector-mesons spectroscopy and baryon form factors; tests of CVC and searches for exotics. In the final part of the document a technical solution for the energy upgrade of DA$Φ$NE is proposed.

A unified approach for nucleon knock-out, coherent and incoherent pion production in neutrino interactions with nuclei

We present a theory of neutrino interactions with nuclei aimed at the description of the partial cross-sections, namely quasi-elastic and multi-nucleon emission, coherent and incoherent single pion production. For this purpose, we use the theory of nuclear responses treated in the random phase approximation, which allows a unified description of these channels. It is particularly suited for the coherent pion production where collective effects are important whereas they are moderate in the other channels. We also study the evolution of the neutrino cross-sections with the mass number from carbon to calcium. We compare our approach to the available neutrino experimental data on carbon. We put a particular emphasis on the multi-nucleon channel, which at present is not easily distinguishable from the quasi-elastic events. This component turns out to be quite relevant for the interpretation of experiments (K2K, MiniBooNE, SciBooNE). It can account in particular for the unexpected behavior of the quasi-elastic cross-section.

We propose a tile calorimeter with a high granularity readout corresponding to about 2500 silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) of $1\times 1$ mm$^2$ area. Moreover, the low polar angle regions need the realization of a dense crystal calorimeter with very high time resolution performances to extend the acceptance for multiphotons events. Best candidates for this calorimeter are LYSO crystals with APD readout or PbWO$_4$ crystals with large area SIPM readout.
