Freelance Fluid/Gravity Correspondence, 3d Analysis

Freelance holography program is an extension of gauge/gravity correspondence, where the gravity theory is defined on a portion of AdS with an arbitrary timelike boundary, with any desired boundary conditions. It is also known that gauge/gravity correspondence admits a fluid/gravity correspondence limit, where the gauge theory side is well described by a fluid. In this work, combining the two, we work through ``freelance fluid/gravity''. In particular, we study in detail the 2d fluid (3d Einstein gravity) case, where one has a good analytical control over the bulk equations due to their integrability and absence of viscosity in the 2d fluid. We study consistency and validity requirements for the freelance fluid/gravity and how the fluid changes along the renormalization group (RG) flow. We prove the $v_g$-theorem, stating that the group velocity of fluid waves $v_g$ is a decreasing function as we move toward the infrared region along the RG flow, regardless of the adopted boundary conditions. We also study examples of holographic fluid with various asymptotic boundary conditions.

Cosmology Intertwined: A Review of the Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology Associated with the Cosmological Tensions and Anomalies

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $σ_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,σ$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $Ω_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($σ_8,fσ_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged]

Hints of FLRW Breakdown from Supernovae

A 10\% difference in the scale for the Hubble parameter constitutes a clear problem for cosmology. Here, considering angular distribution of Type Ia supernovae (SN) within the Pantheon compilation and working within flat $Λ$CDM cosmology, we observe a correlation between higher $H_0$ and the CMB dipole direction, confirming our previous results for strongly-lensed quasars \cite{Krishnan:2021dyb}. Concretely, we record a $\sim 1$ km/s/Mpc variation in $H_0$ at antipodal points on the sky within the Pantheon sample, which is evident in the Low $z$ subsample ($z \lesssim 0.075$) and gets enhanced by higher redshift SN. Our work raises the possibility that we may be at the precision required to probe anisotropic Hubble expansions, while providing a concrete prediction for future inferences of $H_0$.

Is Local $H_0$ At Odds With Dark Energy EFT?

Local $H_0$ determinations currently fall in a window between $H_0 \sim 70$ km/s/Mpc (TRGB) and $H_0 \sim 76$ km/s/Mpc (Tully-Fisher). In contrast, BAO data calibrated in an early $Λ$CDM universe are largely consistent with Planck-$Λ$CDM, $H_0 \sim 67.5$ km/s/Mpc. Employing a generic two parameter family of evolving equations of state (EoS) for dark energy (DE) $w_{\textrm{DE}}(z)$ and mock BAO data, we demonstrate that if i) $w_{\textrm{DE}}(z=0) < -1$ and ii) integrated DE density less than $Λ$CDM, then $H_0$ increases. EoS that violate these conditions at best lead to modest $H_0$ increases within $1 σ$. Tellingly, Quintessence and K-essence satisfy neither condition, whereas coupled Quintessence can only satisfy ii). Beyond these seminal DE Effective Field Theories (EFTs), we turn to explicit examples. Working model agnostically in an expansion in powers of redshift $z$, we show that Brans-Dicke/$f(R)$ and Kinetic Gravity Braiding models within the Horndeski class can lead to marginal and modest increases in $H_0$, respectively. We confirm that as far as increasing $H_0$ is concerned, no DE EFT model can outperform the phenomenological two parameter family of the DE models. Evidently, the late universe may no longer be large enough to accommodate $H_0$, BAO and DE described by EFT.

Null Surface Thermodynamics

We establish that boundary degrees of freedom associated with a generic co-dimension one null surface in $D$ dimensional pure Einstein gravity naturally admit a thermodynamical description. We expect the $\textit{null surface thermodynamics}$ to universally follow as a result of the diffeomorphism invariance of the theory, not relying on other special features of the null surface or the gravity theory. Using standard surface charge analysis and covariant phase space method, we formulate laws of null surface thermodynamics which are local equations over an arbitrary null surface paralleling local versions the zeroth and first laws and the Gibbs-Duhem equation. This thermodynamical system is generally an open system and can be closed only when there is no flux of gravitons through the null surface. Our analysis extends the usual black hole thermodynamics to a universal feature of any area element on a generic null surface. We discuss the relevance of our study for the membrane paradigm and black hole microstates.

On Larger $H_0$ Values in the CMB Dipole Direction

On the assumption that quasars (QSO) and gamma-ray bursts (GRB) represent \textit{standardisable candles}, we provide evidence that the Hubble constant $H_0$ adopts larger values in hemispheres aligned with the CMB dipole direction. If substantiated, this trend signals a departure from FLRW cosmology. In particular, QSOs show a definite trend, whereas our findings in GRBs are consistent with an isotropic Universe, but we show in a sample of GRBs calibrated with Type Ia supernovae (SN) that this conclusion may change as one focuses on GRBs more closely (mis)aligned with the CMB dipole direction. The statistical significance in QSOs alone is $\gtrsim 2 σ$ and when combined with similar trends in strong lensing, Type Ia SN and calibrated GRBs, this increases to $\sim 3 σ$. Our findings are consistent with reported discrepancies in the cosmic dipole and anisotropies in galaxy cluster scaling relations. The reported variations in $H_0$ across the sky suggest that Hubble tension may be a symptom of a deeper cosmological malaise.

Quasar standardization: Overcoming Selection Biases and Redshift Evolution

Quasars (QSOs) are extremely luminous active galatic nuclei currently observed up to redshift $z=7.642$. As such, they have the potential to be the next rung of the cosmic distance ladder beyond SNe Ia, if they can reliably be used as cosmological probes. The main issue in adopting QSOs as standard candles (similarly to Gamma-Ray Bursts) is the large intrinsic scatter in the relations between their observed properties. This could be overcome by finding correlations among their observables that are intrinsic to the physics of QSOs and not artifacts of selection biases and/or redshift evolution. The reliability of these correlations should be verified through well-established statistical tests. The correlation between the ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray fluxes developed by Risaliti \& Lusso is one of the most promising relations. We apply a statistical method to correct this relation for redshift evolution and selection biases. \textbf{Remarkably, we recover the the same parameters of the slope and the normalization as Risaliti \& Lusso. Our results establish the reliability of this relation, which is intrinsic to the QSO properties and not merely an effect of selection biases or redshift evolution. Hence,} the possibility to standardize QSOs as cosmological candles, thereby extending the Hubble diagram up to $z=7.54$.

Revealing Intrinsic Flat $Λ$CDM Biases with Standardizable Candles

Emerging high redshift cosmological probes, in particular quasars (QSOs), show a preference for larger matter densities, $Ω_{m} \approx 1$, within the flat $Λ$CDM framework. Here, using the Risaliti-Lusso relation for standardizable QSOs, we demonstrate that the QSOs recover the \textit{same} Planck-$Λ$CDM Universe as Type Ia supernovae (SN), $Ω_m \approx 0.3$ at lower redshifts $ 0 < z \lesssim 0.7$, before transitioning to an Einstein-de Sitter Universe ($Ω_m =1$) at higher redshifts $z \gtrsim 1$. We illustrate the same trend, namely increasing $Ω_{m}$ and decreasing $H_0$ with redshift, in SN but poor statistics prevent a definitive statement. We explain physically why the trend is expected in the flat $Λ$CDM cosmology, illustrate the intrinsic bias and non-Gaussian tails with mock Pantheon data, and identify a similar trend in BAO below $z=1$. Our results highlight an intrinsic bias in the flat $Λ$CDM Universe, whereby $Ω_m$ increases, $H_0$ decreases and $S_8$ increases with effective redshift, thus providing a new perspective on $Λ$CDM tensions; even in a Planck-$Λ$CDM Universe the current tensions might have been expected.

Symmetries at Causal Boundaries in 2D and 3D Gravity

We study 2d and 3d gravity theories on spacetimes with causal (timelike or null) codimension one boundaries while allowing for variations in the position of the boundary. We construct the corresponding solution phase space and specify boundary degrees freedom by analysing boundary (surface) charges labelling them. We discuss Y and W freedoms and change of slicing in the solution space. For D dimensional case we find D+1 surface charges, which are generic functions over the causal boundary. We show that there exist solution space slicings in which the charges are integrable. For the 3d case there exists an integrable slicing where charge algebra takes the form of Heisenberg \oplus\ {\cal A}_3 where {\cal A}_3 is two copies of Virasoro at Brown-Henneaux central charge for AdS_3 gravity and BMS_3 for the 3d flat space gravity.

Beyond $Λ$CDM with Low and High Redshift Data: Implications for Dark Energy

Assuming that the Universe at higher redshifts (z \sim 4 and beyond) is consistent with LCDM model as constrained by the Planck measurements, we reanalyze the low redshift cosmological data to reconstruct the Hubble parameter as a function of redshift. This enables us to address the H_0 and other tensions between low z observations and high z Planck measurement from CMB. From the reconstructed H(z), we compute the energy density for the "dark energy" sector of the Universe as a function of redshift without assuming a specific model for dark energy. We find that the dark energy density has a minimum for certain redshift range and that the value of dark energy at this minimum is negative. This behavior can most simply be described by a negative cosmological constant plus an evolving dark energy component. We discuss possible theoretical and observational implications of such a scenario.

Horizons 2020

Horizons of black holes or cosmologies are peculiar loci of spacetime where interesting physical effects takes place, some of which are probed by recent (EHT and LIGO) and future experiments (ET and LISA). We discuss that there are boundary degrees of freedom residing at the horizon. We describe their symmetries and their interactions with gravitational waves. This fits into a larger picture of boundary plus bulk degrees of freedom and their interactions in gauge theories. Existence and dynamics of the near horizon degrees of freedom could be crucial to address fundamental questions and apparent paradoxes in black holes physics.

Observable Quantum Loop Effects in the Sky

Expanding on [1], we analyze in detail the single field chaotic inflationary models plus a cosine modulation term, augmented by a light scalar field with inflaton dependent oscillatory mass term. We work out in detail the Feynman diagrams and compute one, two and in general estimate higher loop two and three point functions in the in-in formulation. We explicitly establish how the oscillatory mass term can amplify one-loop effects to dominate over the tree as well as the higher loop contributions. The power spectrum of curvature perturbations of this model is hence enhanced compared to the simple single field chaotic model. As a consequence, one can suppress the tensor to scalar ratio r and have a different expression for scalar spectral tilt and the running of the tilt, opening the way to reconcile chaotic models with convex potential and the Planck data. As in monodromy inflation models, we also have a cosine modulation in the spectral tilt. We also analyze the bispectrum, which can be dominated by the amplified one-loop effects, yielding a new shape in non-Gassuianty. We discuss the bounds on parameter space from all available CMB observables and possible implications for reheating.

Sliding Surface Charges on AdS$_3$

We consider Einstein gravity on a patch of AdS$_3$ spacetime between two radii $r_1, r_2$. We compute surface charges and their algebra at an arbitrary radius $r$ such that it reduces to a given set of surface charges at $r_1, r_2$. The $r$-dependent charges become integrable upon addition of an appropriate boundary $Y$-term. We observe that soft excitations at each boundary are independent of those at the other boundary. We explicitly construct solution geometries which interpolate between these radii with specified surface charges. The interpolation is smooth provided that the mass and angular momentum measured at the two boundaries are equal.

T-Witts from the horizon

Expanding around null hypersurfaces, such as generic Kerr black hole horizons, using co-rotating Kruskal-Israel-like coordinates we study the associated surface charges, their symmetries and the corresponding phase space within Einstein gravity. Our surface charges are not integrable in general. Their integrable part generates an algebra including superrotations and a BMS_3-type algebra that we dub "T-Witt algebra". The non-integrable part accounts for the flux passing through the null hypersurface. We put our results in the context of earlier constructions of near horizon symmetries, soft hair and of the program to semi-classically identify Kerr black hole microstates.

Interpolating Between Asymptotic and Near Horizon Symmetries

We develop basic tools and matching conditions to interpolate between asymptotic and near horizon symmetries. We focus on black holes in three dimensions. In particular, we match Brown--Henneaux boundary conditions at infinity, which yields two Virasoro algebras, to Heisenberg boundary conditions at the horizon yielding two u(1) current algebras. Our construction allows to equip BTZ black holes with soft hair excitations at the horizon invisible to the asymptotic observer.

Source and Response Soft Charges for Maxwell Theory on $AdS_d$

We study asymptotic symmetries and their associated charges for Maxwell theory on anti de Sitter (AdS) background in any dimension. This is obtained by constructing a conserved symplectic structure for the bulk and a theory on the boundary, which we specify. We show that the boundary phase space is described by two scalars and two sets of "source" and "response" boundary gauge transformations. The bulk dynamics is invariant under these two sets of boundary transformations. We study the (soft) charges associated with these two sets and show that they form an infinite dimensional Heisenberg type algebra. Studying the large AdS radius flat space limit, we show only the source soft charges survive. We also analyze algebra of charges associated with SO(d-1,2) isometries of the background $AdS_d$ space and study how they act on our source and response charges. We briefly discuss implication of our results for the AdS/CFT.

Spacetime structure near generic horizons and soft hair

We explore the spacetime structure near non-extremal horizons in any spacetime dimension greater than two and discover a wealth of novel results: 1. Different boundary conditions are specified by a functional of the dynamical variables, describing inequivalent interactions at the horizon with a thermal bath. 2. The near horizon algebra of a set of boundary conditions, labeled by a parameter $s$, is given by the semi-direct sum of diffeomorphisms at the horizon with "spin-$s$ supertranslations". For $s=1$ we obtain the first explicit near horizon realization of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra. 3. For another choice, we find a non-linear extension of the Heisenberg algebra, generalizing recent results in three spacetime dimensions. This algebra allows to recover the aforementioned (linear) ones as composites. 4. These examples allow to equip not only black holes, but also cosmological horizons with soft hair. We also discuss implications of soft hair for black hole thermodynamics and entropy.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy, Field Redefinition Invariance and Higher Derivative Gravity Theories

It is established that physical observables in local quantum field theories should be invariant under invertible field redefinitions. It is then expected that this statement should be true for the entanglement entropy and moreover that, via the gauge/gravity correspondence, the recipe for computing entanglement entropy holographically should also be invariant under local field redefinitions in the gravity side. We use this fact to fix the recipe for computing holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) for $f(R,R_{μν})$ theories which could be mapped to Einstein gravity. An outcome of our prescription is that the surfaces that minimize the corresponding HEE functional for $f(R,R_{μν})$ theories always have vanishing trace of extrinsic curvature and that the HEE may be evaluated using the Wald entropy functional. We show that similar results follow from the FPS and Dong HEE functionals, for Einstein manifold backgrounds in $f(R,R_{μν})$ theories.

Residual Diffeomorphisms and Symplectic Softs Hairs: The Need to Refine Strict Statement of Equivalence Principle

General covariance is the cornerstone of Einstein's General Relativity (GR) and implies that any two metrics related by diffeomorphisms are physically equivalent. There are, however, many examples pointing to the fact that this strict statement of general covariance needs refinement. There are a very special (measure-zero) subset of diffeomorphisms, the residual diffeomrphisms, to which one can associate well-defined conserved charges. This would hence render these diffeomorphic geometries physically distinct. We discuss that these symmetries may be appropriately called "symplectic symmetries". Existence of residual diffeomorphisms and sympelctic symmetries can be a quite general feature and not limited to the examples discussed so far in the literature. We propose that, in the context of black holes, these diffeomorphic, but distinct, geometries may be viewed as "symplectic soft hair" on black holes. We comment on how this may remedy black hole microstate problem, which in this context are dubbed as "horizon fluffs".

Extremal Rotating Black Holes in the Near-Horizon Limit: Phase Space and Symmetry Algebra

We construct the NHEG phase space, the classical phase space of Near-Horizon Extremal Geometries with fixed angular momenta and entropy, and with the largest symmetry algebra. We focus on vacuum solutions to $d$ dimensional Einstein gravity. Each element in the phase space is a geometry with $SL(2,\mathbb R)\times U(1)^{d-3}$ isometries which has vanishing $SL(2,\mathbb R)$ and constant $U(1)$ charges. We construct an on-shell vanishing symplectic structure, which leads to an infinite set of symplectic symmetries. In four spacetime dimensions, the phase space is unique and the symmetry algebra consists of the familiar Virasoro algebra, while in $d>4$ dimensions the symmetry algebra, the NHEG algebra, contains infinitely many Virasoro subalgebras. The nontrivial central term of the algebra is proportional to the black hole entropy. This phase space and in particular its symmetries might serve as a basis for a semiclassical description of extremal rotating black hole microstates.

Near Horizon Structure of Extremal Vanishing Horizon Black Holes

We study the near horizon structure of Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes, extremal black holes with vanishing horizon area with a vanishing one-cycle on the horizon. We construct the most general near horizon EVH and near-EVH ansatz for the metric and other fields, like dilaton and gauge fields which may be present in the theory. We prove that (1) the near horizon EVH geometry for generic gravity theory in generic dimension has a three dimensional maximally symmetric subspace; (2) if the matter fields of the theory satisfy strong energy condition either this 3d part is AdS$_3$, or the solution is a direct product of a locally 3d flat space and a $d-3$ dimensional part; (3) these results extend to the near horizon geometry of near-EVH black holes, for which the AdS$_3$ part is replaced with BTZ geometry. We present some specific near horizon EVH geometries in 3, 4 and 5 dimensions for which there is a classification. We also briefly discuss implications of these generic results for generic (gauged) supergravity theories and also for the thermodynamics of near-EVH black holes and the EVH/CFT proposal.

Symplectic and Killing Symmetries of AdS$_3$ Gravity: Holographic vs Boundary Gravitons

The set of solutions to the AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions is known to be a family of metrics labeled by two arbitrary periodic functions, respectively left and right-moving. It turns out that there exists an appropriate presymplectic form which vanishes on-shell. This promotes this set of metrics to a phase space in which the Brown-Henneaux asymptotic symmetries become symplectic symmetries in the bulk of spacetime. Moreover, any element in the phase space admits two global Killing vectors. We show that the conserved charges associated with these Killing vectors commute with the Virasoro symplectic symmetry algebra, extending the Virasoro symmetry algebra with two $U(1)$ generators. We discuss that any element in the phase space falls into the coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro algebras and that each orbit is labeled by the $U(1)$ Killing charges. Upon setting the right-moving function to zero and restricting the choice of orbits, one can take a near-horizon decoupling limit which preserves a chiral half of the symplectic symmetries. Here we show two distinct but equivalent ways in which the chiral Virasoro symplectic symmetries in the near-horizon geometry can be obtained as a limit of the bulk symplectic symmetries.

Three Theorems on Near Horizon Extremal Vanishing Horizon Geometries

EVH black holes are Extremal black holes with Vanishing Horizon area, where vanishing of horizon area is a result of having a vanishing one-cycle on the horizon. We prove three theorems regarding near horizon geometry of EVH black hole solutions to generic Einstein gravity theories in diverse dimensions. These generic gravity theories are Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-Lambda theories, and gauged or ungauged supergravity theories with U(1) Maxwell fields. Our three theorems are: (1) The near horizon geometry of any EVH black hole has a three dimensional maximally symmetric subspace. (2) If the energy momentum tensor of the theory satisfies strong energy condition either this 3d part is an AdS3, or the solution is a direct product of a locally 3d flat space and a d-3 dimensional part. (3) These results extend to the near horizon geometry of near-EVH black holes, for which the AdS3 part is replaced with BTZ geometry.

Wiggling Throat of Extremal Black Holes

We construct the classical phase space of geometries in the near-horizon region of vacuum extremal black holes as announced in [arXiv:1503.07861]. Motivated by the uniqueness theorems for such solutions and for perturbations around them, we build a family of metrics depending upon a single periodic function defined on the torus spanned by the $U(1)$ isometry directions. We show that this set of metrics is equipped with a consistent symplectic structure and hence defines a phase space. The phase space forms a representation of an infinite dimensional algebra of so-called symplectic symmetries. The symmetry algebra is an extension of the Virasoro algebra whose central extension is the black hole entropy. We motivate the choice of diffeomorphisms leading to the phase space and explicitly derive the symplectic structure, the algebra of symplectic symmetries and the corresponding conserved charges. We also discuss a formulation of these charges with a Liouville type stress-tensor on the torus defined by the $U(1)$ isometries and outline possible future directions.

Gauged M-flation After BICEP2

In view of the recent BICEP2 results [arXiv:1403.3985] which may be attributed to the observation of B-modes polarization of the CMB with tensor-to-scalar ratio $r=0.2_{-0.05}^{+0.07}$, we revisit M-flation model. Gauged M-flation is a string theory motivated inflation model with Matrix valued scalar inflaton fields in the adjoint representation of a $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory. In continuation of our previous works, we show that in the M-flation model induced from a supersymmetric 10d background probed by a stack of $N$ D3-branes, the "effective inflaton" $ϕ$ has a double-well Higgs-like potential, with minima at $ϕ=0,μ$. We focus on the $ϕ>μ$, symmetry-breaking region. We thoroughly examine predictions of the model for $r$ in the $2σ$ region allowed for $n_S$ by the Planck experiment. As computed in [arXiv:0903.1481], for $N_e=60$ and $n_S=0.96$ we find $r\simeq 0.2$, which sits in the sweet spot of BICEP2 region for $r$. We find that with increasing $μ$ arbitrarily, $n_S$ cannot go beyond $\simeq 0.9670$. As $n_S$ varies in the $2σ$ range which is allowed by Planck and could be reached by the model, $r$ varies in the range $[0.1322,0.2623]$. Future cosmological experiments, like the CMBPOL, that confines $n_S$ with $σ(n_S)=0.0029$ can constrain the model further. Also, in this region of potential, for $n_S=0.9603$, we find that the largest isocurvature mode, which is uncorrelated with curvature perturbations, has a power spectrum with the amplitude of order $10^{-11}$ at the end of inflation. We also discuss the range of predictions of $r$ in the hilltop region, $ϕ< μ$.

Gravi-Leptogenesis: Leptogenesis from Gravity Waves in Pseudo-scalar Driven Inflation Models

In this talk we present a mechanism for leptogenesis which is based on gravity waves produced during inflation. We show that when inflation is driven by a pseudo-scalar field the metric perturbations generated during inflation can become birefringent, therefore giving a non-vanishing contribution to the gravitational triangle anomaly and sourcing lepton anti-lepton asymmetry. As this asymmetry is sourced by the fields which are active during inflation, it is not washed out or diluted by inflation. The amount of matter asymmetry generated in our model can be of realistic size for the parameters within the range of some inflationary scenarios and grand unified theories. This talk is based on Ref.[1] which has appeared on the arXiv as hep-th/0403069.

Gravitational Waves from Preheating in M-flation

Matrix inflation, or M-flation, is a string theory motivated inflationary model with three scalar field matrices and gauge fields in the adjoint representation of the $\mathbf{U}(N)$ gauge group. One of these $3N^2$ scalars appears as the effective inflaton while the rest of the fields (scalar and gauge fields) can play the role of isocurvature fields during inflation and preheat fields afterwards. There is a region in parameter space and initial field values, "the hilltop region," where predictions of the model are quite compatible with the recent Planck data. We show that in this hilltop region, if the inflaton ends up in the supersymmetric vacuum, the model can have an embedded preheating mechanism. Couplings of the preheat modes are related to the inflaton self-couplings and therefore are known from the CMB data. Through lattice simulations performed using a symplectic integrator, we numerically compute the power spectra of gravitational waves produced during the preheating stage following M-flation. The preliminary numerical simulation of the spectrum from multi-preheat fields peaks in the GHz band with an amplitude $Ω_{\mathrm{gw}}h^{2} \propto 10^{-16}$, suggesting that the model has concrete predictions for the ultra-high frequency gravity-wave probes. This signature could be used to distinguish the model from rival inflationary models

Leptogenesis from Gravity Waves in Models of Inflation

We present a new mechanism for creating the observed cosmic matter-antimatter asymmetry which satisfies all three Sakharov conditions from one common thread, gravitational waves. We generate lepton number through the gravitational anomaly in the lepton number current. The source term comes from elliptically polarizated gravity waves that are produced during inflation if the inflaton field contains a CP-odd component. In simple inflationary scenarios, the generated matter asymmetry is very small. We describe some special conditions in which our mechanism can give a matter asymmetry of realistic size.

More on Five Dimensional EVH Black Rings

In this paper we continue our analysis of arXiv:1308.1478[hep-th] and study in detail the parameter space of three families of doubly spinning black ring solutions: balanced black ring, unbalanced ring and dipole-charged balanced black rings. In all these three families the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) ring appears in the vanishing limit of the dimensionful parameter of the solution which measures the ring size. We study the near horizon limit of the EVH black rings and for all three cases we find a (pinching orbifold) AdS$_3$ throat with the AdS$_3$ radius $\ell^2=8 G_5 M/(3π)$ where $M$ is the ring mass and $G_5$ is the 5d Newton constant. We also discuss the near horizon limit of near-EVH black rings and show that the AdS$_3$ factor is replaced with a generic BTZ black hole. We use these results to extend the EVH/CFT correspondence for black rings, a 2d CFT dual to near-EVH black rings.

Near Horizon Extremal Geometry Perturbations: Dynamical Field Perturbations vs. Parametric Variations

In arXiv:1310.3727 we formulated and derived the three universal laws governing Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG). In this work we focus on the Entropy Perturbation Law (EPL) which, similarly to the first law of black hole thermodynamics, relates perturbations of the charges labeling perturbations around a given NHEG to the corresponding entropy perturbation. We show that field perturbations governed by the linearized equations of motion and symmetry conditions which we carefully specify, satisfy the EPL. We also show that these perturbations are limited to those coming from difference of two NHEG solutions (i.e. variations on the NHEG solution parameter space). Our analysis and discussions shed light on the "no-dynamics" statements of arXiv:0906.2380 and arXiv:0906.2376.

NHEG Mechanics: Laws of Near Horizon Extremal Geometry (Thermo)Dynamics

Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG) are solutions to gravity theories with $ SL(2,R) \times U(1)^N $ (for some N) symmetry, are smooth geometries and have no event horizon, unlike black holes. Following the ideas by R. M. Wald, we derive laws of NHEG dynamics, the analogs of laws of black hole dynamics for the NHEG. Despite the absence of horizon in the NHEG, one may associate an entropy to the NHEG, as a Noether-Wald conserved charge. We work out entropy and entropy perturbation laws, which are respectively universal relations between conserved Noether charges corresponding to the NHEG and a system probing the NHEG. Our entropy law is closely related to Sen's entropy function. We also discuss whether the laws of NHEG dynamics can be obtained from the laws of black hole thermodynamics in the extremal limit.

Non-Bunch-Davies Initial State Reconciles Chaotic Models with BICEP and Planck

The BICEP2 experiment has announced a signal for primordial gravity waves with tensor-to-scalar ratio $r=0.2^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$ [arXiv:1403.3985]. There are two ways to reconcile this result with the latest Planck experiment [arXiv:1303.5082]. One is by assuming that there is a considerable tilt of $r$, $\mathcal{T}_r$, with a positive sign, $\mathcal{T}_r=d\ln r/d\ln k\gtrsim 0.57^{+0.29}_{-0.27}$ corresponding to a blue tilt for the tensor modes of order $n_T\simeq0.53 ^{+0.29}_{-0.27}$, assuming the Planck experiment best-fit value for tilt of scalar power spectrum $n_S$. The other possibility is to assume that there is a negative running in the scalar spectral index, $dn_S/d\ln k\simeq -0.02$ which pushes up the upper bound on $r$ from $0.11$ up to $0.26$ in the Planck analysis assuming the existence of a tensor spectrum. Simple slow-roll models fail to provide such large values for $\mathcal{T}_r$ or negative runnings in $n_S$ [arXiv:1403.3985]. In this note we show that a non-Bunch-Davies initial state for perturbations can provide a match between large field chaotic models (like $m^2ϕ^2$) with the latest Planck result [arXiv:1306.4914] and BICEP2 results by accommodating either the blue tilt of $r$ or the negative large running of $n_S$.

On Classification of Geometries with SO(2,2) Symmetry

Motivated by the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes, their near horizon geometry and the EVH/CFT proposal, we construct and classify solutions with (local) SO(2,2) symmetry to four and five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theory with positive, zero or negative cosmological constant Lambda, the EMD-$Λ$ theory, and also $U(1)^4$ gauged supergravity in four dimensions and $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions. In four dimensions the geometries are warped product of AdS3 with an interval or a circle. In five dimensions the geometries are of the form of warped product of AdS3 and a 2d surface $Σ_2$. For the Einsten-Maxwell-$Λ$ theory we prove that $Σ_2$ should have a U(1) isometry, a rigidity theorem in this class of solutions. We also construct all d dimensional Einstein vacuum solutions with $SO(2,2) \times U(1)^{d-4}$ or $SO(2,2) \times SO(d-3)$ isometry.

On Quantization of AdS3 Gravity I: Semi-Classical Analysis

In this work we explore ideas in quantizing AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity. We start with the most general solution to the 3d gravity theory which respects Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions. These solutions are specified by two holomorphic functions and satisfy simple superposition rule. These geometries generically have a bifurcate Killing horizon (with a noncompact bifurcation curve) which is not an event horizon and are hence not black holes. Nonetheless, there are superpositions of these geometries which have event horizon. We propose to view these geometries as "semiclassical fuzzball microstates" of BTZ black holes appearing as superposition of these geometries. The details of quantization of these semiclassical microstates will be discussed in an upcoming work.

Reconciliation of High Energy Scale Models of Inflation with Planck

The inflationary cosmology paradigm is very successful in explaining the CMB anisotropy to the percent level. Besides the dependence on the inflationary model, the power spectra, spectral tilt and non-Gaussianity of the CMB temperature fluctuations also depend on the initial state of inflation. Here, we examine to what extent these observables are affected by our ignorance in the initial condition for inflationary perturbations, due to unknown new physics at a high scale $M$. For initial states that satisfy constraints from backreaction, we find that the amplitude of the power spectra could still be significantly altered, while the modification in bispectrum remains small. For such initial states, $M$ has an upper bound of a few tens of $H$, with $H$ being the Hubble parameter during inflation. We show that for $M\sim 20 H$, such initial states always (substantially) suppress the tensor to scalar ratio. In particular we show that a general choice of initial conditions can satisfactorily reconcile the simple $1/2 m^2 ϕ^2$ chaotic model with the Planck data.

Warped Ricci-flat reductions

We present a simple class of warped-product vacuum (Ricci-flat) solutions to ten and eleven-dimensional supergravity, where the internal space is flat and the warp factor supports de Sitter (dS) and anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua in addition to trivial Minkowski vacua. We outline the construction of consistent Kaluza-Klein (KK) reductions and show that, although our vacuum solutions are non-supersymmetric, these are closely related to the bosonic part of well-known maximally supersymmetric reductions on spheres. We comment on the stability of our solutions, noting that (A)dS$_3$ vacua pass routine stability tests.

Dual 2d CFT Identification of Extremal Black Rings from Holes

Five dimensional Einstein gravity vacuum solutions in general fall into two classes of black rings with horizon topology S^2 \times S^1, and black holes with horizon topology S^3. These solutions are specified by their mass and two spins. There are "overlapping" regions of this parameter space where one has extremal rings and holes of the same spins. We show that for such regions the hole has generically a larger entropy than the ring, and likewise, the central charge of the proposed chiral 2d CFT dual to the hole is larger than that of the ring. For special places of this overlapping region where one of the spins tends to zero, the entropies of the extremal ring and hole also tend to zero and essentially become equal. In this case we are dealing with Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes or rings. The near horizon geometry of the near-EVH hole and rings both contain locally AdS_3 throats, providing a basis for the EVH/CFT proposal, a 2d CFT description of the low energy excitations of EVH hole or ring. We argue how the near-EVH hole and near-EVH ring can be distinguished from this dual 2d CFT viewpoint: The hole is a thermal state with zero temperature in the left sector and finite temperature in the right, while the ring is a generic state in the ground state (of the CFT on the plane) in the left sector and a thermal state in the right. The latter is part of the Hilbert space of the 2d CFT obtained in the Discrete Light Cone Quantization (DLCQ).

Extremal Black Holes and First Law of Thermodynamics

We study the low temperature expansion of the first law of thermodynamics for near-extremal black holes. We show that for extremal black holes with non-vanishing entropy, the leading order contribution yields an expression for their extremal entropy in agreement with the entropy function result and the Cardy formula for the entropy of a two dimensional chiral conformal field theory (CFT). When their entropy vanishes due to the vanishing of a one-cycle on the horizon, such leading contribution is always compatible with the first law satisfied by a BTZ black hole. These results are universal and consistent both with the presence of local AdS2 and AdS3 near horizon throats for extremal black holes and with the suggested quantum microscopic descriptions (AdS2/CFT1, Kerr/CFT and EVH/CFT).

Gauge-flation: Inflation From Non-Abelian Gauge Fields

Inflationary models are usually based on dynamics of one or more scalar fields coupled to gravity. In this work we present a new class of inflationary models, gauge-flation or non-Abelian gauge field inflation, where slow-roll inflation is driven by a non-Abelian gauge field. This class of models are based on a gauge field theory with a generic non-Abelian gauge group minimally coupled to gravity. We then focus on a particular gauge-flation model by specifying the action for the gauge theory which allows for a successful slow-roll inflation. This model has two parameters the value of which can be fixed using the CMB and other cosmological data. These values are within the natural range of parameters in generic grand unified theories of particle physics.

Near-Extremal Vanishing Horizon AdS5 Black Holes and Their CFT Duals

We consider families of charged rotating asymptotically AdS5 Extremal black holes with Vanishing Horizon (EVH black holes) whose near horizon geometries develop locally AdS3 throats. Using the AdS3/CFT2 duality, we propose an EVH/CFT2 correspondence to describe the near-horizon low energy IR dynamics of near-EVH black holes involving a specific large N limit of the 4d N = 4 SYM. We give a map between the UV and IR near-EVH excitations, showing that the UV first law of thermodynamics reduces to the IR first law satisfied by the near horizon BTZ black holes in this near-EVH limit. We also discuss the connection between our EVH/CFT proposal and the Kerr/CFT correspondence in the cases where the two overlap.

Non-Abelian Gauge Field Inflation

In [arXiv:1102.1513] we introduced an inflationary scenario, Non-Abelian Gauge Field Inflation or gauge-flation for short, in which slow-roll inflation is driven by non-Abelian gauge field minimally coupled to gravity. We present a more detailed analysis, both numerical and analytical, of the gauge-flation. By studying the phase diagrams of the theory, we show that getting enough number of e-folds during a slow-roll inflation is fairly robust to the choice of initial gauge field values. In addition, we present a detailed analysis of the cosmic perturbation theory in gauge-flation which has many special and interesting features compared the standard scalar-driven inflationary models. The specific gauge-flation model we study in this paper has two parameters, a cutoff scale Lambda and the gauge coupling g. Fitting our results with the current cosmological data fixes Λ\sim 10 H \sim 10^{15} GeV (H is the Hubble parameter) and g\sim 10^{-4}, which are in the natural range of parameters in generic particle physics beyond standard models. Our model also predicts a tensor-to-scalar ratio r>0.05, in the range detectable by the Planck satellite.

Gauge-flation Vs Chromo-Natural Inflation

Gauge-flation, non-Abelian gauge field inflation, which was introduced in arXiv:1102.1513 and analyzed more thoroughly in arXiv:1102.1932, is a model of inflation driven by non-Abelian gauge fields minimally coupled to Einstein gravity. In this model certain rotationally invariant combination of gauge fields play the role of inflaton. Recently, the chromo-natural inflation model was proposed arXiv:1202.2366 which besides the non-Abelian gauge fields also involve an axion field. In this short note we show that the model involving axions, indeed allows for various slow-roll trajectories for different values of its parameters: A specific trajectory discussed in arXiv:1202.2366 starts from a "small axion" region, while the trajectory considered in arXiv:1102.1513 corresponds to a "large axion" region.

Revisiting Cosmic No-Hair Theorem for Inflationary Settings

In this work we revisit Wald's cosmic no-hair theorem in the context of accelerating Bianchi cosmologies for a generic cosmic fluid with non-vanishing anisotropic stress tensor and when the fluid energy momentum tensor is of the form of a cosmological constant term plus a piece which does not respect strong or dominant energy conditions. Such a fluid is the one appearing in inflationary models. We show that for such a system anisotropy may grow, in contrast to the cosmic no-hair conjecture. In particular, for a generic inflationary model we show that there is an upper bound on the growth of anisotropy. For slow-roll inflationary models our analysis can be refined further and the upper bound is found to be of the order of slow-roll parameters. We examine our general discussions and our extension of Wald's theorem for three classes of slow-roll inflationary models, generic multi-scalar field driven models, anisotropic models involving U(1) gauge fields and the gauge-flation scenario.

1/N Resolution to Inflationary eta-Problem

We observe that the dominant one loop contribution to the graviton propagator in the theory of N (N>>1) light scalar fields ϕ_a (with masses smaller than M_{pl}/\sqrt{N}) minimally coupled to Einstein gravity is proportional to N while that of graviton-scalar-scalar interaction vertex is N independent. We use this to argue that the coefficient of the Rϕ_a^2 term appearing at one loop level is 1/N suppressed. This observation provides a resolution to the η-problem, that the slow-roll parameter ηreceives order one quantum loop corrections for inflationary models built within the framework of scalar fields minimally coupled to Einstein gravity, for models involving large number of fields. As particular examples, we employ this to argue in favor of the absence of η-problem in M-flation and N-flation scenarios.

Beyond Logarithmic Corrections to Cardy Formula

As shown by Cardy modular invariance of the partition function of a given unitary non-singular 2d CFT with left and right central charges c_L and c_R, implies that the density of states in a microcanonical ensemble, at excitations Delta and Delta-bar and in the saddle point approximation, is ρ_0(Δ,\barΔ;c_L, c_R)=c_L c_R \exp(2π\sqrt{{c_LΔ}/{6}})\exp(2π\sqrt{{c_R\barΔ}/{6}}). In this paper, we extend Cardy's analysis and show that in the saddle point approximation and up to contributions which are exponentially suppressed compared to the leading Cardy's result, the density of states takes the form ρ(Δ,\barΔ; c_L,c_R)= f(c_LΔ) f(c_R\barΔ)ρ_0(Δ,\barΔ; c_L, c_R), for a function f(x) which we specify. In particular, we show that (i) ρ(Δ,\barΔ; c_L, c_R) is the product of contributions of left and right movers and hence, to this approximation, the partition function of any modular invariant, non-singular unitary 2d CFT is holomorphically factorizable and (ii) ρ(Δ,\barΔ; c_L, c_R)/(c_Lc_R) is only a function of $c_R\barΔ$ and $c_LΔ$. In addition, treating ρ(Δ,\barΔ; c_L, c_R) as the density of states of a microcanonical ensemble, we compute the entropy of the system in the canonical counterpart and show that the function f(x) is such that the canonical entropy, up to exponentially suppressed contributions, is simply given by the Cardy's result \lnρ_0(Δ,\barΔ; c_L, c_R).

Emergent IR dual 2d CFTs in charged AdS5 black holes

We study the possible dynamical emergence of IR conformal invariance describing the low energy excitations of near-extremal R-charged global AdS5 black holes. We find interesting behavior especially when we tune parameters in such a way that the relevant extremal black holes have classically vanishing horizon area, i.e. no classical ground-state entropy, and when we combine the low energy limit with a large N limit of the dual gauge theory. We consider both near-BPS and non-BPS regimes and their near horizon limits, emphasize the differences between the local AdS3 throats emerging in either case, and discuss potential dual IR 2d CFTs for each case. We compare our results with the predictions obtained from the Kerr/CFT correspondence, and obtain a natural quantization for the central charge of the near-BPS emergent IR CFT which we interpret in terms of the open strings stretched between giant gravitons.

EVH Black Holes, AdS3 Throats and EVH/CFT Proposal

Within class of generic black holes there are extremal black holes (with vanishing Hawking temperature T) and vanishing horizon area Ah, but with finite Ah/T ratio, the Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) black holes. We study the near horizon limit of a four dimensional EVH black hole solution to a generic (gauged) Einstein-Maxwell dilaton theory and show that in the near horizon limit they develop a throat which is a pinching orbifold limit of AdS3. This is an extension of the well known result for extremal black holes the near horizon limit of which contains an AdS2 throat. We show that in the near EVH near horizon limit the pinching AdS3 factor turns to a pinching BTZ black hole and that this near horizon limit is indeed a decoupling limit. We argue that the pinching AdS3 or BTZ orbifold is resolved if the near horizon limit is accompanied by taking the 4d Newton constant G4 to zero such that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S = Ah/(4G4) remains finite. We propose that in this limit the near horizon EVH black hole is dual to a 2d CFT. We provide pieces of evidence in support of the EVH/CFT correspondence and comment on its connection to the Kerr/CFT proposal and speculations how the EVH/CFT may be used to study generic e.g. Schwarzchild-type black holes.

Gauge-flation and Cosmic No-Hair Conjecture

Gauge-flation, inflation from non-Abelian gauge fields, was introduced in [1,2]. In this work, we study the cosmic no-hair conjecture in gauge-flation. Starting from Bianchi-type I cosmology and through analytic and numeric studies we demonstrate that the isotropic FLRW inflation is an attractor of the dynamics of the theory and that the anisotropies are damped within a few e-folds, in accord with the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Gauged M-flation, its UV sensitivity and Spectator Species

In this paper we study gauged M-flation, an inflationary model in which inflation is driven by three NxN scalar field matrices in the adjoint representation of U(N) gauge group. We focus our study on the gauged M-flation model which could be derived from the dynamics of a stack of D3-branes in appropriate background flux. The background inflationary dynamics is unaltered compared to the ungauged case of [arXiv:0903.1481[hep-th]], while the spectrum of "spectator species", the isocurvature modes, differs from the ungauged case. Presence of a large number of spectators, although irrelevant to the slow-roll inflationary dynamics has been argued to lower the effective UV cutoff $Λ$ of the theory from the Planck mass, invalidating the main advantage of M-flation in not having super-Planckian field values and unnaturally small couplings. Through a careful analysis of the spectrum of the spectators we argue that, contrary to what happens in N-flation models, M-flation is still UV safe with the modified (reduced) effective UV cutoff $Λ$, which we show to be of order (0.5-1)x10^{-1} M_{pl}. Moreover, we argue that the string scale in our gauged M-flation model is larger than $Λ$ by a factor of 10 and hence one can also neglect stringy effects. We also comment on the stability of classical inflationary paths in the gauged M-flation.

Near Horizon Limits of Massless BTZ and Their CFT Duals

We consider the massless BTZ black hole and show that it is possible to take its "near horizon" limit in two distinct ways. The first one leads to a null self-dual orbifold of AdS3 and the second to a spacelike singular AdS3/Z_K orbifold in the large K limit, the "pinching orbifold". We show that from the dual 2d CFT viewpoint, the null orbifold corresponds to the p^+=0 sector of the Discrete Light-Cone Quantisation (DLCQ) of the 2d CFT where a chiral sector of the CFT is decoupled, while the pinching orbifold corresponds to taking an infinite mass gap limit in both the right and left sectors of the 2d CFT, essentially leaving us with the states L_0=\bar L_0=c/24 only. In the latter case, one can combine the near horizon limit with sending the 3d Planck length l_P to zero, or equivalently the dual CFT central charge c to infinity. We provide preliminary evidence that in that case some nontrivial dynamics may survive the limit.

Light-Like Noncommutativity, Light-Front Quantization and New Light on UV/IR Mixing

We revisit the problem of quantizing field theories on noncommutative Moyal spacetime with \emph{light-like} noncommutativity. To tackle the issues arising from noncommuting and hence nonlocal time, we argue that for this case light-front quantization procedure should be employed. In this appropriate quantization scheme we perform the non-planar loop analysis for the light-like noncommutative field theories. One of the important and peculiar features of light-front quantization is that the UV cutoff of the light-cone Hamiltonian manifests itself as an IR cutoff for the light-cone momentum, $p^+$. Due to this feature, the naive results of covariant quantization for the light-like case allude to the absence of the UV/IR mixing in the light-front quantization. However, by a careful analysis of non-planar loop integrals we show that this is not the case and the UV/IR mixing persists. In addition, we argue in favour of the perturbative unitarity of light-like noncommutative field theories in the light-front quantization scheme.

M-flation: Inflation From Matrix Valued Scalar Fields

We propose an inflationary scenario, M-flation, in which inflation is driven by three $N\times N$ hermitian matrices $Φ_i, i=1,2,3$. The inflation potential of our model, which is strongly motivated from string theory, is constructed from $Φ_{i}$ and their commutators. We show that one can consistently restrict the classical dynamics to a sector in which the $Φ_i$ are proportional to the $N\times N$ irreducible representations of SU(2). In this sector our model effectively behaves as an N-flation model with $3 N^2$ number of fields and the effective inflaton field has a super-Planckian field value. Furthermore, the fine-tunings associated with unnaturally small couplings in the chaotic type inflationary scenarios are removed. Due to the matrix nature of the inflaton fields there are $3N^2-1$ extra scalar fields in the dynamics. These have the observational effects such as production of iso-curvature perturbations on cosmic microwave background. Moreover, the existence of these extra scalars provides us with a natural preheating mechanism and exit from inflation. As the effective inflaton field can traverse super-Planckian distances in the field space, the model is capable of producing a considerable amount of gravity waves that can be probed by future CMB polarization experiments such as PLANCK, QUIET and CMBPOL.

O-BTZ: Orientifolded BTZ Black Hole

Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black holes are constructed by orbifolding AdS3 geometry by boost transformations of its O(2,2) isometry group. Here we construct a new class of solutions to AdS3 Einstein gravity, orientifolded BTZ or O-BTZ for short, which in general, besides the usual BTZ orbifolding, involve orbifolding (orientifolding) by a Z_2 part of O(2,2) isometry group. This Z_2 is chosen such that it changes the orientation on AdS3 while keeping the orientation on its 2D conformal boundary. O-BTZ solutions exhaust all un-oriented AdS3 black hole solutions, as BTZ black holes constitute all oriented AdS3 black holes. O-BTZ, similarly to BTZ black holes, are stationary, axisymmetric asymptotically AdS3 geometries with two asymptotic charges, mass and angular momentum..

Orientifolded Locally AdS3 Geometries

Continuing the analysis of [arXiv:1003.4089[hep-th]], we classify all locally AdS3 stationary axi-symmetric unorientable solutions to AdS3 Einstein gravity and show that they are obtained by applying certain orientifold projection on AdS3, BTZ or AdS3 self-dual orbifold, respectively O-AdS3, O-BTZ and O-SDO geometries. Depending on the orientifold fixed surface, the O-surface, which is either a space-like 2D plane or cylinder, or a light-like 2D plane or cylinder one can distinguish four distinct cases. For the space-like orientifold plane or cylinder cases these geometries solve AdS3 Einstein equations and are hence locally AdS3 everywhere except at the O-surface, where there is a delta-function source. For the light-like cases the geometry is a solution to Einstein equations even at the O-surface. We discuss the causal structure for static, extremal and general rotating O-BTZ and O-SDO cases as well as the geodesic motion on these geometries. We also discuss orientifolding Poincare patch AdS3 and AdS2 geometries as a way to geodesic completion of these spaces and comment on the 2D CFT dual to the O-geometries.

Can Seiberg-Witten Map Bypass Noncommutative Gauge Theory No-Go Theorem?

There are strong restrictions on the possible representations and in general on the matter content of gauge theories formulated on noncommutative Moyal spaces, termed as noncommutative gauge theory no-go theorem. According to the no-go theorem \cite{no-go}, matter fields in the noncommutative U(1) gauge theory can only have $\pm 1$ or zero charges and for a generic noncommutative $\prod_{i=1}^n U(N_i)$ gauge theory matter fields can be charged under at most two of the $U(N_i)$ gauge group factors. On the other hand, it has been argued in the literature that, since a noncommutative U(N) gauge theory can be mapped to an ordinary U(N) gauge theory via the Seiberg-Witten map, seemingly it can bypass the no-go theorem. In this note we show that the Seiberg-Witten map \cite{SW} can only be consistently defined and used for the gauge theories which respect the no-go theorem. We discuss the implications of these arguments for the particle physics model building on noncommutative space.

Nearing 11d Extremal Intersecting Giants and New Decoupled Sectors in D = 3,6 SCFT's

We extend the analysis of arXiv:0801.4457 [hep-th] to charged black hole solutions of four-dimensional $U(1)^4$ gauged supergravity which carry three charges. There are two decoupling near-horizon limits, one over the near-BPS black hole solution and the other over the near-extremal, but non-BPS geometry. Taking the limit over the eleven dimensional uplift of these black hole solutions, for both of these cases we obtain a geometry which has a piece (conformal) to rotating BTZ $\times S^2$. We study the 4d, $11d$ and $5d, 3d$ black hole properties. Moreover, we show that the BTZ$\times S^2$ geometry obtained after the near-BPS (near-extremal) limit is also a solution to five-dimensional $U(1)^3$ un-gauged (gauged) STU supergravity. Based on these decoupling limits we argue that there should be sectors of 3d CFT resulting from low energy limit of theory on $N$ M2-branes ($N\to \infty)$, which are decoupled from the rest of the theory and are effectively described by a 2d CFT. The central charge of the 2d CFT in both near-BPS and near-extremal case scales as $N$. The engineering dimension of the operators in these decoupled sectors scales as $N^{4/3}$ (for near-BPS case) while as $N^{3/2}$ (for the near-extremal case). Moreover, we discuss the description of the decoupled sectors as certain deformations of $6d$ CFT residing on the intersecting M5-brane giants.

Tachyonic Resonance Preheating in Expanding Universe

In this paper the tachyonic resonance preheating generated from the bosonic trilinear $ϕχ^2$ interactions in an expanding Universe is studied. In $λϕ^4/4$ inflationary model the trilinear interaction, in contrast to the four-legs $ϕ^2χ^2$, breaks the conformal symmetry explicitly and the resonant source term becomes non-periodic, making the Floquet theorem inapplicable. We find that the occupation number of the produced $χ$-particles has a non-linear exponential growth with exponent $\sim x^{3/2}$, where $x$ is the conformal time. This should be contrasted with preheating from a periodic resonant source, arising for example from the four-legs $ϕ^2χ^2$ interaction, where the occupation number has a linear exponential growth. We present an analytic method to compute the interference term coming from phases accumulated in non-tachyonic scattering regions and show that the effects of the interference term causes ripples on $x^{3/2}$ curve, a result which is confirmed by numerical analysis. Studying the effects of back-reaction of the $χ$-particles, we show that tachyonic resonance preheating in our model can last long enough to transfer most of the energy from the background inflation field $ϕ$, providing an efficient model for preheating in the chaotic inflation models.

What is a chiral 2d CFT? And what does it have to do with extremal black holes?

The near horizon limit of the extremal BTZ black hole is a``self-dual orbifold'' of AdS_3. This geometry has a null circle on its boundary, and thus the dual field theory is a Discrete Light Cone Quantized (DLCQ) two dimensional CFT. The same geometry can be compactified to two dimensions giving AdS_2 with a constant electric field. The kinematics of the DLCQ show that in a consistent quantum theory of gravity in these backgrounds there can be no dynamics in AdS_2, which is consistent with older ideas about instabilities in this space. We show how the necessary boundary conditions eliminating AdS_2 fluctuations can be implemented, leaving one copy of a Virasoro algebra as the asymptotic symmetry group. Our considerations clarify some aspects of the chiral CFTs appearing in proposed dual descriptions of the near-horizon degrees of freedom of extremal black holes.

A Realization of the Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity

We show that the Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity (VSR) theory [1] can be realized as the part of the Poincaré symmetry preserved on a noncommutative Moyal plane with light-like noncommutativity. Moreover, we show that the three subgroups relevant to the Cohen-Glashow VSR can also be realized in the noncommutative space-time setting. For all these three cases the noncommutativity parameter $θ^{μν}$ should be light-like ($θ^{μν}θ_{μν}=0$). A fixed constant noncommutativity parameter respects the T(2) subgroup of Lorentz, while for the E(2) and SIM(2) cases the form of noncommutativity among the coordinates should be of linear (Lie algebra) and quadratic (quantum group) type, respectively. We discuss some physical implications of this realization of the Cohen-Glashow VSR.

An Arena for Model Building in the Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity

The Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity (VSR) algebra [arXiv:hep-ph/0601236] is defined as the part of the Lorentz algebra which upon addition of CP or T invariance enhances to the full Lorentz group, plus the space-time translations. We show that noncommutative space-time, in particular noncommutative Moyal plane, with light-like noncommutativity provides a robust mathematical setting for quantum field theories which are VSR invariant and hence set the stage for building VSR invariant particle physics models. In our setting the VSR invariant theories are specified with a single deformation parameter, the noncommutativity scale Λ_{NC}. Preliminary analysis with the available data leads to Λ_{NC}\gtrsim 1-10 TeV. Noncommutative Standard Model: Model Building

A noncommutative version of the usual electro-weak theory is constructed. We discuss how to overcome the two major problems: 1) although we can have noncommutative U(n) (which we denote by $U_{\star}(n)$) gauge theory we cannot have noncommutative SU(n) and 2) the charges in noncommutative QED are quantized to just $0, \pm 1$. We show how the problem with charge quantization, as well as with the gauge group, can be resolved by taking $U_{\star}(3)\times U_{\star}(2)\times U_{\star}(1)$ gauge group and reducing the extra U(1) factors in an appropriate way. Then we proceed with building the noncommutative version of the standard model by specifying the proper representations for the entire particle content of the theory, the gauge bosons, the fermions and Higgs. We also present the full action for the noncommutative Standard Model (NCSM). In addition, among several peculiar features of our model, we address the {\it inherent} CP violation and new neutrino interactions.
