Improved Heralded Schemes to Generate Entangled States From Single Photons

We present a novel semi-analytical methodology to construct optimal linear optical circuits for heralded production of 3-photon GHZ and 2-photon Bell states. We provide a detailed description and analysis of the resulting optical schemes, which deliver success probabilities of 1/54 and 2/27 for dual-rail encoded 3-GHZ and Bell states generation, respectively. Our results improve the known constructive bounds on the success probabilities for 3-GHZ states and are of particular importance for a ballistic quantum computing model, for which these states provide an essential resource.

Fine tuned vortices in lattice SU(2) gluodynamics

We report measurements of the action associated with center vortices in SU(2) pure lattice gauge theory. In the lattice units the excess of the action on the plaquettes belonging to the vortex is approximately a constant, independent on the lattice spacing 'a'. Therefore the action of the center vortex is of order 'A/a^2', where 'A' is its area. Since the area 'A' is known to scale in the physical units, the measurements imply that the suppression due to the surface action is balanced, or fine tuned to the entropy factor which is to be an exponential of 'A/a^2'.

Heavy monopole potential in gluodynamics

We discuss predictions for the interaction energy of the fundamental monopoles in gluodynamics introduced via the 't Hooft loop. At short distances, the heavy monopole potential is calculable from first principles. At larger distances, we apply the Abelian dominance models. We discuss the measurements which would be crucial to distinguish between various models. Non-zero temperatures are also considered. Our predictions are in qualitative agreement with the existing lattice data. We discuss further measurements which would be crucial to check the model.

The Berry Phase and Monopoles in Gluodynamics

We introduce a gauge invariant definition of a monopole on the lattice. The construction is based on the observation that for each Wilson loop there exists an extra U(1) group which leaves the loop invariant. Since the lattice formulation utilizes the language of Wilson loops, the definition of the monopole charge in terms of this plaquette dependent U(1) is gauge invariant. The explicit construction of gauge invariant monopoles is presented both in continuum and on the lattice.

Dirac Strings and Monopoles in the Continuum Limit of SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

Magnetic monopoles are known to emerge as leading non-perturbative fluctuations in the lattice version of non-Abelian gauge theories in some gauges. In terms of the Dirac quantization condition, these monopoles have magnetic charge |Q_M|=2. Also, magnetic monopoles with |Q_M|=1 can be introduced on the lattice via the 't Hooft loop operator. We consider the |Q_M|=1,2 monopoles in the continuum limit of the lattice gauge theories. To substitute for the Dirac strings which cost no action on the lattice, we allow for singular gauge potentials which are absent in the standard continuum version. Once the Dirac strings are allowed, it turns possible to find a solution with zero action for a monopole--antimonopole pair. This implies equivalence of the standard and modified continuum versions in perturbation theory. To imitate the nonperturbative vacuum, we introduce then a nonsingular background. The modified continuum version of the gluodynamics allows in this case for monopoles with finite non-vanishing action. Using similar techniques, we construct the 't Hooft loop operator in the continuum and predict its behavior at small and large distances both at zero and high temperatures.

Abelian Dyons in the Maximal Abelian Projection of SU(2) Gluodynamics

Correlations of the topological charge Q, the electric current J^e and the magnetic current J^m in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the Maximal Abelian projection are investigated. It occurs that the correlator <<QJ^e J^m>> is nonzero for a wide range of values of the bare charge. It is shown that: (i) the abelian monopoles in the Maximal Abelian projection are dyons which carry fluctuating electric charge; (ii) the sign of the electric charge e(x) coincides with that of the product of the monopole charge m(x) and the topological charge density Q(x).

Embedded Topological Defects in Electroweak Theory: From Percolating Networks to Sphalerons

New defects (Z-vortices and Nambu monopoles) are found to become thermodynamically relevant for the broken phase near to the (weakly first order) electroweak phase transition, and below the crossover for higher Higgs mass. The symmetric phase is characterized by vortex condensation (percolation). The percolation transition persists in the crossover region. The quasiclassical nature of the vortices is supported by correlations with Higgs field and gauge field energy. Sphalerons are shown to be related to monopolium bound states.

Embedded Topological Defects in Hot Electroweak Theory: a Lattice Study

We study the properties of Nambu monopoles and Z-vortices in the 3D lattice SU(2) Higgs theory which represents the Standard Model at high temperature. We show that the densities of the Nambu monopoles and the Z-vortices are O(1) in the symmetric phase and generically small in the Higgs phase. Near to the critical Higgs mass and in the vicinity of the phase transition the densities are no more negligible in the broken phase. The percolation probability of the Z-vortex lines is found as a new disorder parameter for this phase transition. We conclude that the transition to the symmetric phase is accompanied by Z-vortex condensation. Simulations comparing elementary and extended vortices and monopoles at different β_G values, aiming to show that the density of vortices and monopoles of fixed physical size might have a well-defined continuum limit, gives encouraging but so far inconclusive results.

Topological Content of the Electroweak Sphaleron on the Lattice

3D electroweak sphalerons on the lattice are used as test configurations for definitions of various topological defects. In the maximally Abelian gauge they are shown to contain a symmetric array of Abelian monopoles and anti-monopoles connected by two kinds of Abelian vortex strings. Gauge-invariant lattice definitions of the Nambu monopole and the Z-vortex string are formulated which correspond to Abelian projection from the unitary gauge. The sphalerons contain in their core just one (non-Abelian) Nambu monopole-anti-monopole pair (connected by a Z-string) in an unstable saddle point bound state. This provides an example for the monopole-pair unbinding mechanism expected to work at the electroweak phase transition. The definitions of defects developed here will be used in future studies of topological aspects of this transition.

Z-Vortex Percolation in the Electroweak Crossover Region

We study the statistical properties of Z-vortices and Nambu monopoles in the 3D SU(2) Higgs model for a Higgs mass M_H \approx 100 GeV near and above the crossover temperature, where these defects are thermally excited. Although there is no phase transition at that strong selfcoupling, we observe that the Z-vortices exhibit the percolation transition that has been found recently to accompany the first order thermal transition that exists at smaller Higgs mass. Above the crossover temperature percolating networks of Z-vortex lines are ubiquitous, whereas vortices form a dilute gas of closed vortex loops and (Nambu) monopolium states on the low-temperature side of the crossover. The percolation temperature turns out to be roughly independent of the lattice spacing. We find that the Higgs modulus is smaller (the gauge action is larger) inside the vortices, compared to the bulk average. This correlation becomes very strong on the low-temperature side. The percolation transition is a prerequisite of some string mediated baryon number generation scenarios.

Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Lattice Abelian Higgs Theory

We study a field-theoretical analogue of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in two-, three- and four-dimensional Abelian Higgs models; the corresponding topological interaction is proportional to the linking number of the Abrikosov vortex and the particle world trajectories. We show that the Aharonov-Bohm effect gives rise to a nontrivial interaction of charged test particles. The numerical calculations in the three-dimensional model confirm this fact.
