Towards hole-spin qubits in Si pMOSFETs within a planar CMOS foundry technology

Hole spins in semiconductor quantum dots represent a viable route for the implementation of electrically controlled qubits. In particular, the qubit implementation based on Si pMOSFETs offers great potentialities in terms of integration with the control electronics and long-term scalability. Moreover, the future down scaling of these devices will possibly improve the performance of both the classical (control) and quantum components of such monolithically integrated circuits. Here we use a multi-scale approach to simulate a hole-spin qubit in a down scaled Si-channel pMOSFET, whose structure is based on a commercial 22nm fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator device. Our calculations show the formation of well defined hole quantum dots within the Si channel, and the possibility of a general electrical control, with Rabi frequencies of the order of 100 MHz for realistic field values. Our calculations demonstrate the crucial role of the channel aspect ratio, and the presence of a favorable parameter range for the qubit manipulation.

Dicke coupling by feasible local measurements at the superradiant quantum phase transition

We address characterization of many-body superradiant systems and establish a fundamental connection between quantum criticality and the possibility of locally estimating the coupling constant, i.e extracting its value by probing only a portion of the whole system. In particular, we consider Dicke-like superradiant systems made of an ensmble of two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode radiation field at zero effective temperature, and address estimation of the coupling by measurements performed only on radiation. At first, we obtain analytically the Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) and show that optimal estimation of the coupling may be achieved by tuning the frequency of the radiation field to drive the system towards criticality. The scaling behavior of the QFI at the critical point is obtained explicitly upon exploiting the symplectic formalism for Gaussian states. We then analyze the performances of feasible detection schemes performed only on the radiation subsystem, namely homodyne detection and photon counting, and show that the corresponding Fisher Informations (FIs) approach the global QFI in the critical region. We thus conclude that criticality is a twofold resource. On the one hand, global QFI diverges at the critical point, i.e. the coupling may be estimated with the arbitrary precision. On the other hand, the FIs of feasible local measurements, (which are generally smaller than the QFI out of the critical region), show the same scaling of the global QFI, i.e. optimal estimation of coupling may be achieved by locally probing the system, despite its strongly interacting nature.

Backscattering Differential Ghost Imaging in Turbid Media

In this Letter we present experimental results concerning the retrieval of images of absorbing objects immersed in turbid media via differential ghost imaging (DGI) in a backscattering configuration. The method has been applied, for the first time to our knowledge, to the imaging of small thin black objects located at different depths inside a turbid solution of polystyrene nanospheres and its performances assessed via comparison with standard imaging techniques. A simple theoretical model capable of describing the basic optics of DGI in turbid media is proposed.

Solvable model of dissipative dynamics in the deep strong coupling regime

We describe the dynamics of a qubit interacting with a bosonic mode coupled to a zero-temperature bath in the deep strong coupling (DSC) regime. We provide an analytical solution for this open system dynamics in the off-resonance case of the qubit-mode interaction. Collapses and revivals of parity chain populations and the oscillatory behavior of the mean photon number are predicted. At the same time, photon number wave packets, propagating back and forth along parity chains, become incoherently mixed. Finally, we investigate numerically the effect of detuning on the validity of the analytical solution.

State mapping and discontinuous entanglement transfer in a multipartite open system

We describe the transfer of quantum information and correlations from an entangled tripartite bosonic system to three separate qubits through their local environments also in the presence of various dissipative effects. Optimal state mapping and entanglement transfer are shown in the framework of optical cavity quantum electrodynamics involving qubit-like radiation states and two-level atoms via the mediation of cavity modes. For an input GHZ state mixed with white noise we show the occurrence of sudden death and birth of entanglement that is discontinuously exchanged among the tripartite subsystems.
