Quasar cosmology: dark energy evolution and spatial curvature

We analyse some open debates in cosmology in light of the most updated quasar (QSO) sample, covering a wide redshift range up to $z\sim7.5$, combined with type Ia supernovae (SNe) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Indeed, extending the cosmological analyses with high-redshift data is key to distinguishing between different cosmological models that are degenerate at low redshifts, and allowing better constraints on a possible dark energy (DE) evolution. Also, we discuss combinations of BAO, SNe, and QSO data to understand their compatibility and implications for extensions of the standard cosmological model. Specifically, we consider a flat and non-flat $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ cosmology, a flat and non-flat DE model with a constant DE equation of state parameter ($w$), and four flat DE models with variable $w$, namely the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder and Jassal-Bagla-Padmanabhan models, and an "exponential" and Barboza-Alcaniz parameterisations. We find that a joint analysis of QSO+SNe with BAO is only possible in the context of a flat Universe. Indeed BAO confirms the flatness condition assuming a curved geometry, whilst SNe+QSO show evidence of a closed space. We also find $Ω_{M,0}=0.3$ in all data sets assuming a flat $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ model. Yet, all the other models show a statistically significant deviation at 2-3$σ$ with the combined SNe+QSO+BAO data set. In the models where DE density evolves with time, SNe+QSO+BAO data always prefer $Ω_{M,0}>0.3$, $w_{0}<-1$ and $w_{a}>0$. This DE phantom behaviour is mainly driven by SNe+QSO, while BAO are closer to the flat $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ model.

Brane inflation and the robustness of the Starobinsky inflationary model

The first inflationary model conceived was the one proposed by Starobinsky which includes an additional term quadratic in the Ricci-scalar R in the Einstein-Hilbert action. The model is now considered a target for several future cosmic microwave background experiments given its compatibility with current observational data. In this paper, we analyse the robustness of the Starobinsky inflation by inserting it into a generalized scenario based on a $β$-Starobinsky inflation potential, which is motivated through brane inflation. In the Einstein frame, the generalized model recovers the original model for $β=0$, whereas $\forall β\neq 0$ represents an extended class of models that admit a wider range of solutions. We investigate limits on $β$ from current cosmic microwave background and baryonic acoustic oscillation data and find that only a small deviation from the original scenario is allowed, $β=-0.08 \pm 0.12$ (68% C.L.), which is fully compatible with zero and confirms the robustness of the Starobinsky inflationary model in light of current observations.

A 3-dimensional interdigitated electrode geometry for the enhancement of charge collection efficiency in diamond detectors

In this work, a single crystal CVD diamond film with a novel three-dimensional (3D) interdigitated electrode geometry has been fabricated with the Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) technique in order to increase the charge collection efficiency (CCE) with respect to that obtained by standard superficial electrodes. The geometrical arrangement of the electric field lines due to the 3D patterning of the electrodes results in a shorter travel path for the excess charge carriers, thus contributing to a more efficient charge collection mech-anism. The CCE of the device was mapped by means of the Ion Beam Induced Charge (IBIC) technique. A 1 MeV proton micro-beam was raster scanned over the active area of the diamond detector under different bias voltage conditions, enabling to probe the charge transport properties of the detector up to a depth of 8 μm below the sample surface. The experimental results, supported by the numerical simulations, show a significant improvement in the 3D-detector performance (i.e. CCE, energy resolution, extension of the active area) if compared with the results obtained by standard surface metallic electrodes.

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from the SDSS DR10 galaxies angular correlation function

The 2-point angular correlation function $w(θ)$ (2PACF), where $θ$ is the angular separation between pairs of galaxies, provides the transversal Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) signal almost model-independently. In this paper we use 409,337 luminous red galaxies in the redshift range $z = [0.440,0.555]$ obtained from the tenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR10) to estimate $θ_{\rm{BAO}}(z)$ from the 2PACF at six redshift {shells}. Since noise and systematics can hide the BAO signature in the $w - θ$ plane, we also discuss some criteria to localize the acoustic bump. We identify two sources of model-dependence in the analysis, namely, the value of the acoustic scale from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements and the correction in the $θ_{\rm{BAO}}(z)$ position due to projection effects. Constraints on the dark energy equation-of-state parameter w$(z)$ from the $θ_{\rm{BAO}}(z)$ diagram are derived, as well as from a joint analysis with current CMB measurements. We find that the standard $Λ$CDM model as well as some of its extensions are in good agreement with these $θ_{\rm{BAO}}(z)$ measurements.
