An optimal boundary control approach to the Cherrier-Escobar problem

We study an optimal boundary control problem associated to the boundary obstacle problem for the couple conformal Laplacian and conformal Robin operator on n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary and with n\geq 3. When the Cherrier-Escobar invariant of the compact Riemannian manifold with boundary is positive, we show that the optimal controls are equal to their associated optimal states. Moreover, we show that the optimal controls are minimizers of the Cherrier-Escobar functional, and hence induce conformal metrics with zero scalar curvature and constant mean curvature. Furthermore, we show the existence of an optimal control under an Aubin type assumption. For the standard unit ball, we derive a sharp Sobolev trace type inequality and prove that the standard bubbles-namely conformal factor of metrics conformal to the standard one with zero scalar curvature and constant mean curvature -- are the only optimal controls and hence equal to their associated optimal states.

Cherrier-Escobar problem for the elliptic Schroedinger-to-Neumann map

In this paper, we study a Cherrier-Escobar problem for the extended problem corresponding to the elliptic Schroedinger-to-Neumann map on a compact 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary. Using the algebraic topological argument of Bahri-Coron, we show solvability under the assumption that the extended problem corresponding to the elliptic Schroedinger-to-Neumann map has a positive first eigenvalue, a positive Green function, and also verifies the strong maximum principle.

Leray-Schauder degree for the resonant Q-curvature problem in even dimensions

In this paper, using the theory of critical points at infinity of Bahri, we derive an exact bubbling rate formula for the resonant prescribed Q-curvature equation on closed even-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Using this, we derive new existence results for the resonant prescribed Q-curvature problem under a positive mass type assumption. Moreover, we derive a compactness theorem for conformal metrics with prescribed Q-curvature under a non-degeneracy assumption. Furthermore, combining the bubbling rate formula with the construction of some blowing-up solutions, we compute the Leray-Schauder degree of the resonant prescribed Q-curvature equation under a non-degeneracy and Morse type assumption.

Optimal control for the Paneitz obstacle problem

In this paper, we study a natural optimal control problem associated to the Paneitz obstacle problem on closed 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. We show the existence of an optimal control which is an optimal state and induces also a conformal metric with prescribed Q-curvature. We show also C^{\infty}-regularity of optimal controls and some compactness results for the optimal controls. In the case of the 4-dimensional standard sphere, we characterize all optimal controls.

Candidates for non-rectangular constrained Willmore minimizers

For every $\;b>1\;$ fixed, we explicitly construct $1$-dimensional families of embedded constrained Willmore tori parametrized by their conformal class $\;(a,b)$\; with $\; a \sim_b 0^+\;$ deforming the homogenous torus \;$f^b$ of conformal class \;$(0,b).$ The variational vector field at $f^b$ is hereby given by a non-trivial zero direction of a penalized Willmore stability operator which we show to coincide with a double point of the corresponding spectral curve. Further, we characterize for $b \sim 1$, $b \neq 1$ and $a \sim_b 0^+$ the family obtained by opening the "smallest" double point on the spectral curve which is heuristically the direction with the smallest increase of Willmore energy at $f^b$. Indeed we show in \cite{HelNdi1} that these candidates minimize the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class for $b \sim 1$, $b \neq 1$ and $a \sim_b 0^+.$

First explicit constrained Willmore minimizers of non-rectangular conformal class

We study immersed tori in $3$-space minimizing the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class. Within the rectangular conformal classes $\;(0,b)\;$ with $\;b \sim 1\;$ the homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ are known to be the unique constrained Willmore minimizers (up to invariance). In this paper we generalize this result and show that the candidates constructed in \cite{HelNdi2} are indeed constrained Willmore minimizers in certain non-rectangular conformal classes $\;(a,b).\;$ Difficulties arise from the fact that these minimizers are non-degenerate for $\;a \neq 0\;$ but smoothly converge to the degenerate homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ as $\;a \longrightarrow 0.\;$ As a byproduct of our arguments, we show that the minimal Willmore energy $\;ω(a,b)\;$ is real analytic and concave in $\;a \in (0, a^b)\;$ for some $\;a^b>0\;$ and fixed $\;b \sim 1,\;$ $b \neq 1.$

The resonant boundary $Q$-curvature problem and boundary-weighted barycenters

Given a compact four-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with boundary, we study the problem of existence of Riemannian metrics on $M$ conformal to $g$ with prescribed $Q$-curvature in the interior $\mathring{M}$ of $M$, and zero $T$-curvature and mean curvature on the boundary $\partial M$ of $M$. This geometric problem is equivalent to solving a fourth-order elliptic boundary value problem (BVP) involving the Paneitz operator with boundary conditions of Chang-Qing and Neumann operators. The corresponding BVP has a variational formulation but the corresponding variational problem, in the case under study, is not compact. To overcome such a difficulty we perform a systematic study, à la Bahri, of the so called {\it critical points at infinity}, compute their Morse indices, determine their contribution to the difference of topology between the sublevel sets of associated Euler-Lagrange functional and hence extend the full Morse Theory to this noncompact variational problem. To establish Morse inequalities we were led to investigate from the topological viewpoint the space of boundary-weighted barycenters of the underlying manifold, which arise in the description of the topology of very negative sublevel sets of the related functional. As an application of our approach we derive various existence results and provide a Poincaré-Hopf type criterium for the prescribed $Q$-curvature problem on compact four dimensional Riemannian manifolds with boundary.

Barycenter technique and the Riemann mapping problem of Escobar

We solve the remaining cases of the Riemann mapping problem of Escobar. Indeed, performing a suitable scheme of the barycenter technique of Bahri-Coron via the Chen's bubbles, we solve the cases left open after the work of Chen. Thus, combining our work with the ones of Almaraz, Chen, Escobar and Marques we have that every compact Riemannian manifold with boundary of dimension greater or equal than 3 carries a conformal scalar flat metric with constant mean curvature.

Proof of the remaining cases of the Yamabe boundary problem

In this paper, we solve the remaining cases of the boundary Yamabe problem introduced by Escobar in 1992. Indeed, using the bubbles of Brendle-Chen, which are an adaptation to manifolds with boundary of the original ones introduced by Brendle for the study of the Yamabe flow on closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater or equal to 6, and the algebraic topological argument of Bahri-Coron, we solve the cases left open after the work of Brendle-Chen. Thus combining our work with the ones of Brendle-Chen and Escobar, we have that the boundary Yamabe problem is a done deal.

Morse theory and the resonant Q-curvature problem

In this paper, we study the prescribed $Q$-curvature problem on closed four-dimensional Riemannian manifolds when the total integral of the $Q$-curvature is a positive integer multiple of the one of the four-dimensional round sphere. This problem has a variational structure with a lack of compactness. Using some topological tools of the theory of "critical points at infinity" combined with a refined blow-up analysis and some dynamical arguments, we identify the accumulations points of all noncompact flow lines of a pseudogradient flow, the so called critical points at infinity of the associated variational problem, and associate to them a natural Morse index. We then prove strong Morse type inequalities, extending the full Morse theory to this noncompact variational problem. Finally, we derive from our results Poincaré-Hopf index type criteria for existence, extending known results in the literature and deriving new ones.

Integral pinching results for manifolds with boundary

We prove that some Riemannian manifolds with boundary under an explicit integral pinching are spherical space forms. Precisely, we show that 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary, positive scalar curvature and an explicit integral pinching between the $L^2$-norm of their scalar curvature and the $L^2$-norm of their Ricci tensor are spherical space forms with totally geodesic boundary. Moreover, we prove also that 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with umbilic boundary, positive Yamabe invariant and an explicit integral pinching between the total integral of their $(Q,T)$-curvature and the $L^2$-norm of their Weyl curvature are spherical space forms with totally geodesic boundary. As a consequence of our work, we show that a certain conformally invariant operator which plays an important role in Conformal Geometry has a trivial kernel and is non-negative if the Yamabe invariant is positive and verifies a pinching condition together with the total integral of the $(Q,T)$-curvature. As an application of the latter spectral analysis, we show the existence of conformal metrics with constant $Q$-curvature, constant $T$-curvature, and zero mean curvature under the latter assumptions.
