On the pluriclosed flow on Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds

We investigate the pluriclosed flow on Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds. We parametrize left-invariant pluriclosed metrics on Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds and we classify the ones which lift to an algebraic soliton of the pluriclosed flow on the universal covering. We further show that the pluriclosed flow starting from a left-invariant pluriclosed metric has a long-time solution $ω_t$ which once normalized collapses to a torus in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense. Moreover the lift of $\tfrac{1}{1+t}ω_t$ to the universal covering of the manifold converges in the Cheeger-Gromov sense to $(\mathbb H^r\times\mathbb C^s, \tildeω_{\infty})$ where $\tildeω_{\infty}$ is an algebraic soliton.

Pluriclosed and Strominger Kähler-like metrics compatible with abelian complex structures

We show that the existence of a left-invariant pluriclosed Hermitian metric on a unimodular Lie group with a left-invariant abelian complex structure forces the group to be $2$-step nilpotent. Moreover, we prove that the pluriclosed flow starting from a left-invariant Hermitian metric on a $2$-step nilpotent Lie group preserves the Strominger Kähler-like condition.

Hermitian Curvature flow on unimodular Lie groups and static invariant metrics

We investigate the Hermitian curvature flow (HCF) of left-invariant metrics on complex unimodular Lie groups. We show that in this setting the flow is governed by the Ricci-flow type equation $\partial_tg_{t}=-{\rm Ric}^{1,1} (g_t)$. The solution $g_t$ always exist for all positive times, and $(1 + t)^{-1}g_t$ converges as $t\to \infty$ in Cheeger-Gromov sense to a non-flat left-invariant soliton $(\bar G, \bar g)$. Moreover, up to homotheties on each of these groups there exists at most one left-invariant soliton solution, which is a static Hermitian metric if and only if the group is semisimple. In particular, compact quotients of complex semisimple Lie groups yield examples of compact non-Kähler manifolds with static Hermitian metrics. We also investigate the existence of static metrics on nilpotent Lie groups and we generalize a result in \cite{EFV} for the pluriclosed flow. In the last part of the paper we study HCF on Lie groups with abelian complex structures.

A sharp quantitative version of Alexandrov's theorem via the method of moving planes

We prove the following quantitative version of the celebrated Soap Bubble Theorem of Alexandrov. Let $S$ be a $C^2$ closed embedded hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq1$, and denote by $osc(H)$ the oscillation of its mean curvature. We prove that there exists a positive $\varepsilon$, depending on $n$ and upper bounds on the area and the $C^2$-regularity of $S$, such that if $osc(H) \leq \varepsilon$ then there exist two concentric balls $B_{r_i}$ and $B_{r_e}$ such that $S \subset \overline{B}_{r_e} \setminus B_{r_i}$ and $r_e -r_i \leq C \, osc(H)$, with $C$ depending only on $n$ and upper bounds on the surface area of $S$ and the $C^2$ regularity of $S$. Our approach is based on a quantitative study of the method of moving planes and the quantitative estimate on $r_e-r_i$ we obtain is optimal. As a consequence of this theorem, we also prove that if $osc(H)$ is small then $S$ is diffeomorphic to a sphere and give a quantitative bound which implies that $S$ is $C^1$-close to a sphere.

On the Calabi-Yau equation in the Kodaira-Thurston manifold

We review some previous results about the Calabi-Yau equation on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold equipped with an invariant almost-Kaehler structure and assuming the volume form invariant by the action of a torus. In particular, we observe that under some restrictions the problem is reduced to a Monge-Ampère equation by using the ansatz $\tilde ω=Ω-dJdu+da$, where $u$ is a $T^2$-invariant function and $a$ is a $1$-form depending on $u$. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to non-invariant almost-complex structures by considering some basic cases and we finally take into account a generalization to higher dimensions.

A remark on an overdetermined problem in Riemannian Geometry

Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold with a distinguished point $O$ and assume that the geodesic distance $d$ from $O$ is an isoparametric function. Let $Ω\subset M$ be a bounded domain, with $O \in Ω$, and consider the problem $Δ_p u = -1$ in $Ω$ with $u=0$ on $\partial Ω$, where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian of $g$. We prove that if the normal derivative $\partial_νu$ of $u$ along the boundary of $Ω$ is a function of $d$ satisfying suitable conditions, then $Ω$ must be a geodesic ball. In particular, our result applies to open balls of $\mathbb{R}^n$ equipped with a rotationally symmetric metric of the form $g=dt^2+ρ^2(t)\,g_S$, where $g_S$ is the standard metric of the sphere.

Special Hermitian metrics on compact solvmanifolds

We review some constructions and properties of complex manifolds admitting pluriclosed and balanced metrics. We prove that for a 6-dimensional solvmanifold endowed with an invariant complex structure J having holomorphically trivial canonical bundle the pluriclosed flow has a long time solution for every invariant initial datum. Moreover, we state a new conjecture about the existence of balanced and SKT metrics on compact complex manifolds. We show that the conjecture is true for nilmanifolds of dimension 6 and 8 and for 6-dimensional solvmanifolds with holomorphically trivial canonical bundle.

On the J-flow in Sasakian manifolds

We study the space of Sasaki metrics on a compact manifold $M$ by introducing an odd-dimensional analogue of the $J$-flow. That leads to the notion of critical metric in the Sasakian context. In analogy to the Kähler case, on a polarised Sasakian manifold there exists at most one normalised critical metric. The flow is a tool for texting the existence of such a metric. We show that some results proved by Chen in [7] can be generalised to the Sasakian case. In particular, the Sasaki $J$-flow is a gradient flow which has always a long-time solution minimising the distance on the space of Sasakian potentials of a polarized Sasakian manifold. The flow minimises an energy functional whose definition depends on the choice of a background transverse Kähler form $χ$. When $χ$ has nonnegative transverse holomorphic bisectional curvature, the flow converges to a critical Sasakian structure.

SKT and Tamed Symplectic structures on solvmanifolds

We study the existence of strong Kähler with torsion (SKT) metrics and of symplectic forms taming invariant complex structures $J$ on solvmanifolds $G/Γ$ providing some negative results for some classes of solvmanifolds. In particular, we show that if either $J$ is invariant under the action of a nilpotent complement of the nilradical of $G$ or $J$ is abelian or $G$ is almost abelian (not of type (I)), then the solvmanifold $G/Γ$ cannot admit any symplectic form taming the complex structure $J$, unless $G/Γ$ is Kähler. As a consequence, we show that the family of non-Kähler complex manifolds constructed by Oeljeklaus and Toma cannot admit any symplectic form taming the complex structure.

Some remarks on Calabi-Yau and hyper-Kähler foliations

We study Riemannian foliations whose transverse Levi-Civita connection $\nabla$ has special holonomy. In particular, we focus on the case where $Hol(\nabla)$ is contained either in SU(n) or in Sp(n). We prove a Weitzenbock formula involving complex basic forms on Kähler foliations and we apply this formula for pointing out some properties of transverse Calabi-Yau structures. This allows us to prove that links provide examples of compact simply-connected contact Calabi-Yau manifolds. Moreover, we show that a simply-connected compact manifold with a Kähler foliation admits a transverse hyper- Kähler structure if and only if it admits a compatible transverse hyper-Hermitian structure. This latter result is the "foliated version" of a theorem proved by Verbitsky. In the last part of the paper we adapt our results to the Sasakian case, showing in addition that a compact Sasakian manifold has trivial transverse holonomy if and only if it is a compact quotient of the Heisenberg Lie group.

The pluriclosed flow on nilmanifolds and Tamed symplectic forms

We study evolution of (strong Kähler with torsion) SKT structures via the pluriclosed flow on complex nilmanifolds, i.e. on compact quotients of simply connected nilpotent Lie groups by discrete subgroups endowed with an invariant complex structure. Adapting to our case the techniques introduced by Jorge Lauret for studying Ricci flow on homogeneous spaces we show that for SKT Lie algebras the pluriclosed flow is equivalent to a bracket flow and we prove a long time existence result in the nilpotent case. Finally, we introduce a natural flow for evolving tamed symplectic forms on a complex manifold, by considering evolution of symplectic forms via the flow induced by the Bismut Ricci form.

On Sasakian manifolds with special transverse holonomy

We study compact Sasakian manifolds whose Tondeur connection has holonomy group either trivial or contained in Sp(n). We show that the first condition forces the manifold to be a compact quotient of the Heisenberg Lie group, while in the simply-connected case a Sasakian structure has the holonomy of the Tondeur connection contained in Sp(n) if and only if there exists a transverse hypercomplex structure. This latter result is the "Sasakian version" of a theorem of Verbitsky.

The Calabi-Yau equation for $T^2$-bundles over $\mathbb{T}^2$: the non-Lagrangian case

In the spirit of [10,2], we study the Calabi-Yau equation on $T^2$-bundles over $\mathbb{T}^2$ endowed with an invariant non-Lagrangian almost-Kähler structure showing that for $T^2$-invariant initial data it reduces to a Monge-Ampère equation having a unique solution. In this way we prove that for every total space $M^4$ of an orientable $T^2$-bundle over $\mathbb{T}^2$ endowed with an invariant almost-Kähler structure the Calabi-Yau problem has a solution for every normalized $T^2$-invariant volume form.

Quasi-Kähler Chern-flat manifolds and complex 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras

The study of quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian manifolds is strictly related to the study of anti-bi-invariant almost complex Lie algebras. In the present paper we show that quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian structures on compact manifolds are in correspondence to complex parallelisable Hermitian structures satisfying the second Gray identity. From an algebraic point of view this correspondence reads as a natural correspondence between anti-bi-invariant almost complex structures on Lie algebras to bi-invariant complex structures. Some natural algebraic problems are approached and some exotic examples are carefully described.

Tamed Symplectic forms and SKT metrics

Symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact manifolds are strictly related to Hermitian metrics having the fundamental form $\partial \bar \partial $-closed, i.e. to strong Kähler with torsion (${\rm SKT}$) metrics. It is still an open problem to exhibit a compact example of a complex manifold having a tamed symplectic structure but non-admitting Kähler structures. We show some negative results for the existence of symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact quotients of Lie groups by discrete subgroups. In particular, we prove that if $M$ is a nilmanifold (not a torus) endowed with an invariant complex structure $J$, then $(M, J)$ does not admit any symplectic form taming $J$. Moreover, we show that if a nilmanifold $M$ endowed with an invariant complex structure $J$ admits an ${\rm SKT}$ metric, then $M$ is at most 2-step. As a consequence we classify 8-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with an invariant complex structure admitting an SKT metric.

The Calabi-Yau equation on 4-manifolds over 2-tori

This paper pursues the study of the Calabi-Yau equation on certain symplectic non-Kaehler 4-manifolds, building on a key example of Tosatti-Weinkove in which more general theory had proved less effective. Symplectic 4-manifolds admitting a 2-torus fibration over a 2-torus base are modelled on one of three solvable Lie groups. Having assigned an invariant almost-Kaehler structure and a volume form that effectively varies only on the base, one seeks a symplectic form with this volume. Our approach simplifies the previous analysis of the problem, and establishes the existence of solutions in various other cases.

Complex submanifolds of almost complex Euclidean spaces

We prove that a compact Riemann surface can be realized as a pseudo-holomorphic curve of $(\mathbb{R}^4,J)$, for some almost complex structure $J$ if and only if it is an elliptic curve. Furthermore we show that any (almost) complex $2n$-torus can be holomorphically embedded in $(\mathbb{R}^{4n},J)$ for a suitable almost complex structure $J$. This allows us to embed any compact Riemann surface in some almost complex Euclidean space and to show many explicit examples of almost complex structure in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ which can not be tamed by any symplectic form.

Gray identities, canonical connection and integrability

We characterize quasi Kähler manifolds whose curvature tensor associated to the canonical Hermitian connection satisfies the first Bianchi identity. This condition is related with the third Gray identity and in the almost Kähler case implies the integrability. Our main tool is the existence of generalized holomorphic frames introduced by the second author previously. By using such frames we also give a simpler and shorter proof of a Theorem of Goldberg. Furthermore we study almost Hermitian structures having the curvature tensor associated to the canonical Hermitian connection equal to zero. We show some explicit examples of quasi Kähler structures on the Iwasawa manifold having the Hermitian curvature vanishing and the Riemann curvature tensor satisfying the second Gray identity.

Quasi-Kähler manifolds with trivial Chern Holonomy

In this paper we study almost complex manifolds admitting a quasi-Kähler Chern-flat metric (Chern-flat means that the holonomy of the Chern connection is trivial). We prove that in the compact case such manifolds are all nilmanifolds. Some partial classification results are established and we prove that a quasi-Kähler Chern-flat structure can be tamed by a symplectic form if and only if the ambient space is isomorphic to a flat torus.

Torsion of SU(2)-structures and Ricci curvature in dimension 5

In anlogy with the work of R. Bryant on the Ricci tensor of a G$_2$-structure, we study the intrinsic torsion of an SU$(2)$-structure on a 5-dimensional manifold deriving an explicit expression for the Ricci and the scalar curvature in terms of torsion forms and its derivative. As a consequence of this formula we prove that the $α$-Einstein condition forces some special SU(2)-structures to be Sasaki-Einstein.
