Noise-induced intermittence

We study a form of noise-induced intermittence originated by an out of equilibrium process yielding events in time with a survival probability that in the case of an infinitely aged condition coincides with the Mittag-Leffler function. In contrast with the Pomeau-Manneville intermittence, the aging process does not have any effect on the inverse power law of the large time scale but on the short-time stretched exponential regime.

A phenomenological estimate of the Covid-19 true scale from primary data

Estimation of prevalence of undocumented SARS-CoV-2 infections is critical for understanding the overall impact of the Covid-19 disease. In fact, unveiling uncounted cases has fundamental implications for public policy interventions strategies. In the present work, we show a basic yet effective approach to estimate the actual number of people infected by Sars-Cov-2, by using epidemiological raw data reported by official health institutions in the largest EU countries and USA.

Epidemic response to physical distancing policies and their impact on the outbreak risk

We introduce a theoretical framework that highlights the impact of physical distancing variables such as human mobility and physical proximity on the evolution of epidemics and, crucially, on the reproduction number. In particular, in response to the coronavirus disease (CoViD-19) pandemic, countries have introduced various levels of 'lockdown' to reduce the number of new infections. Specifically we use a collisional approach to an infection-age structured model described by a renewal equation for the time homogeneous evolution of epidemics. As a result, we show how various contributions of the lockdown policies, namely physical proximity and human mobility, reduce the impact of SARS-CoV-2 and mitigate the risk of disease resurgence. We check our theoretical framework using real-world data on physical distancing with two different data repositories, obtaining consistent results. Finally, we propose an equation for the effective reproduction number which takes into account types of interactions among people, which may help policy makers to improve remote-working organizational structure.

Boltzmann entropy and chaos in a large assembly of weakly interacting systems

We introduce a high dimensional symplectic map, modeling a large system consisting of weakly interacting chaotic subsystems, as a toy model to analyze the interplay between single-particle chaotic dynamics and particles interactions in thermodynamic systems. We study the growth with time of the Boltzmann entropy, S_B, in this system as a function of the coarse graining resolution. We show that a characteristic scale emerges, and that the behavior of S_B vs t, at variance with the Gibbs entropy, does not depend on the coarse graining resolution, as far as it is finer than this scale. The interaction among particles is crucial to achieve this result, while the rate of entropy growth depends essentially on the single-particle chaotic dynamics (for t not too small). It is possible to interpret the basic features of the dynamics in terms of a suitable Markov approximation.

Cognitive scale-free networks as a model for intermittency in human natural language

We model certain features of human language complexity by means of advanced concepts borrowed from statistical mechanics. Using a time series approach, the diffusion entropy method (DE), we compute the complexity of an Italian corpus of newspapers and magazines. We find that the anomalous scaling index is compatible with a simple dynamical model, a random walk on a complex scale-free network, which is linguistically related to Saussurre's paradigms. The model yields the famous Zipf's law in terms of the generalized central limit theorem.

Decoherence, wave function collapses and non-ordinary statistical mechanics

We consider a toy model of pointer interacting with a 1/2-spin system, whose $σ_{x}$ variable is \emph{measured} by the environment, according to the prescription of decoherence theory. If the environment measuring the variable $σ_{x}$ yields ordinary statistical mechanics, the pointer sensitive to the 1/2-spin system undergoes the same, exponential, relaxation regardless of whether real collapses or an entanglement with the environment, mimicking the effect of real collapses, occur. In the case of non-ordinary statistical mechanics the occurrence of real collapses make the pointer still relax exponentially in time, while the equivalent picture in terms of reduced density matrix generates an inverse power law relaxation.

A non extensive approach to the entropy of symbolic sequences

Symbolic sequences with long-range correlations are expected to result in a slow regression to a steady state of entropy increase. However, we prove that also in this case a fast transition to a constant rate of entropy increase can be obtained, provided that the extensive entropy of Tsallis with entropic index q is adopted, thereby resulting in a new form of entropy that we shall refer to as Kolmogorov-Sinai-Tsallis (KST) entropy. We assume that the same symbols, either 1 or -1, are repeated in strings of length l, with the probability distribution p(l) proportional to 1/(l^mu). The numerical evaluation of the KST entropy suggests that at the value mu = 2 a sort of abrupt transition might occur. For the values of mu in the range 1<mu<2 the entropic index q is expected to vanish, as a consequence of the fact that in this case the average length <l> diverges, thereby breaking the balance between determinism and randomness in favor of determinism. In the region mu > 2 the entropic index q seems to depend on mu through the power law expression q = (mu-2)^(alpha) with alpha approximately 0.13 (q = 1 with mu > 3). It is argued that this phase-transition like property signals the onset of the thermodynamical regime at mu = 2.
