Edge-enabled Metaverse: The Convergence of Metaverse and Mobile Edge Computing

The Metaverse is a virtual environment where users are represented by avatars to navigate a virtual world, which has strong links with the physical one. State-of-the-art Metaverse architectures rely on a cloud-based approach for avatar physics emulation and graphics rendering computation. Such centralized design is unfavorable as it suffers from several drawbacks caused by the long latency required for cloud access, such as low quality visualization. To solve this issue, in this paper, we propose a Fog-Edge hybrid computing architecture for Metaverse applications that leverage an edge-enabled distributed computing paradigm, which makes use of edge devices computing power to fulfil the required computational cost for heavy tasks such as collision detection in virtual universe and computation of 3D physics in virtual simulation. The computational cost related to an entity in the Metaverse such as collision detection or physics emulation are performed at the end-device of the associated physical entity. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed architecture, we simulate a distributed social metaverse application. Simulation results shows that the proposed architecture can reduce the latency by 50% when compared with the legacy cloud-based Metaverse applications.

Supervised Learning based QoE Prediction of Video Streaming in Future Networks: A Tutorial with Comparative Study

The Quality of Experience (QoE) based service management remains key for successful provisioning of multimedia services in next-generation networks such as 5G/6G, which requires proper tools for quality monitoring, prediction and resource management where machine learning (ML) can play a crucial role. In this paper, we provide a tutorial on the development and deployment of the QoE measurement and prediction solutions for video streaming services based on supervised learning ML models. Firstly, we provide a detailed pipeline for developing and deploying supervised learning-based video streaming QoE prediction models which covers several stages including data collection, feature engineering, model optimization and training, testing and prediction and evaluation. Secondly, we discuss the deployment of the ML model for the QoE prediction/measurement in the next generation networks (5G/6G) using network enabling technologies such as Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) by proposing reference architecture. Thirdly, we present a comparative study of the state-of-the-art supervised learning ML models for QoE prediction of video streaming applications based on multiple performance metrics.

QoE Management of Multimedia Streaming Services in Future Networks: A Tutorial and Survey

We provide in this paper a tutorial and a comprehensive survey of QoE management solutions in current and future networks. We start with a high level description of QoE management for multimedia services, which integrates QoE modelling, monitoring, and optimization. This followed by a discussion of HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) solutions as the dominant technique for streaming videos over the best-effort Internet. We then summarize the key elements in SDN/NFV along with an overview of ongoing research projects, standardization activities and use cases related to SDN, NFV, and other emerging applications. We provide a survey of the state-of-the-art of QoE management techniques categorized into three different groups: a) QoE-aware/driven strategies using SDN and/or NFV; b) QoE-aware/driven approaches for adaptive streaming over emerging architectures such as multi-access edge computing, cloud/fog computing, and information-centric networking; and c) extended QoE management approaches in new domains such as immersive augmented and virtual reality, mulsemedia and video gaming applications. Based on the review, we present a list of identified future QoE management challenges regarding emerging multimedia applications, network management and orchestration, network slicing and collaborative service management in softwarized networks. Finally, we provide a discussion on future research directions with a focus on emerging research areas in QoE management, such as QoE-oriented business models, QoE-based big data strategies, and scalability issues in QoE optimization.

A Cloud-Based and RESTful Internet of Things Platform to Foster Smart Grid Technologies Integration and Re-Usability

Currently, one of the hottest topics in the Internet of Things (IoT) research domain regards the issue to overcome the heterogeneity of proprietary technologies and systems so as to enable the integration of applications and devices developed for different environments in a single interoperable framework. Towards this objective, virtualization is widely used to foster integration and creation of new services and applications. Similar benefits are expected by its application in the smart grid arena. The use of a virtualization middleware is expected to enrich the capabilities and opportunities related to the use of smart grid devices. In this paper, we propose key features for an interoperable, re-usable, elastic and secure smart grid architecture which is cloud-based and relies on REST APIs. To highlight the benefits, a practical case study is presented, where outlined functionalities are implemented in a cloud-based IoT platform. The advantages brought by the proposed middleware in terms of interoperability, re-usability, privacy and elasticity of the underlying infrastructure are discussed.

Adaptive PMU-based Distribution System State Estimation exploiting the Cloud-based IoT paradigm

This paper presents an adaptive Distribution System State Estimation (DSSE) which relies on a Cloud-based IoT paradigm. The methodology is adaptive in terms of the rate of execution of the estimation process which varies depending on the indications of the distributed measurement system. The system is composed, in particular, of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). PMUs are virtualized with respect to the physical devices and the corresponding virtualizing modules run in the communication network edge (i.e. closer to the physical objects). PMUs are set at a higher measurement rate, while the estimation process works at a given slower rate, for example once per second, in normal operative conditions. A local decision algorithm implemented in the virtualized module, monitors the measured quantities in order to detect and address possible unexpected dynamics. In particular, different metrics can be applied: the variations and the trend of variation of the rms voltage values, but also the Rate Of Change Of Frequency (ROCOF) of the monitored signals can be used to trigger rate variation in the DSSE.In case dynamics are detected, the measurement data is sent to the DSSE at higher rates and the estimation process runs consequently on a finer time scale. In the considered system only application level entities are located in the Cloud, thus allowing to obtain a bandwidth-efficient and smart data transmission. The results obtained on a 13-bus systems prove the goodness of the proposed methodologies.

An IoT Architecture for Wide Area Measurement Systems: a Virtualized PMU Based Approach

Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are pervading different application domains by relying on sensing and actuating devices that share, process and present meaningful real-world information. One of the most important of these domains is certainly the Smart Grid (SG), where the use of advanced measurement and control equipment and the diffusion of communication technologies are making an adaptive, reliable, and efficient management of the energy possible, with several new applications. In this scenario, this paper focuses on one of the major IoT features, which is the virtualization, and proposes an IoT solution for wide area measurement systems where virtualized phasor measurement resources are introduced. Such a solution is intended to make a programmable and smart environment fostering interoperability, reusability and flexibility of SG services. The performance of the system is evaluated for both the traffic generated and the latency to understand which scenarios can benefit from its deployment.

IoT Cloud-based Distribution System State Estimation: Virtual Objects and Context-Awareness

This paper presents an IoT cloud-based state estimation system for distribution networks in which the PMUs (Phasor Measurement Units) are virtualized with respect to the physical devices. In the considered system only application level entities are put in the cloud, whereas virtualized PMUs are running in the communication network edge (i.e. closer to the physical objects) in order to have a certain degree of local logic, which allows to implement a bandwidth-efficient and smart data transmission to the involved applications in the cloud. The major contributions of the paper are the following: we demonstrate that a cloud-based architecture is capable of achieving the QoS level required by the specific state estimation application; we show that implementing a certain local logic for data transmission in the cloud, the result of the state estimation is not degraded with respect to the case of an estimation that takes place frequently at fixed intervals; we show the results in terms of latency and reduced network load for a reference smart grid network.
