Vinogradov's Cohomological Geometry of Partial Differential Equations

Secondary Calculus is a formal replacement for differential calculus on the space of solutions of a system of possibly non-linear partial differential equations and it is essentially due to Alexandre M. Vinogradov and his collaborators. Many coordinate free properties of PDEs find their natural place in Secondary Calculus including: symmetries and conservation laws, variational principles and the coordinate free aspects of the calculus of variations, recursion operators and Hamiltonian structures, etc. The building blocks of this language are horizontal cohomologies of diffieties, i.e. infinite prolongations of PDEs, and their versions with local coefficients. The main paradigm of Secondary Calculus is the principle, due to A. M. Vinogradov, roughly stating that: differential calculus on the space of solutions of a PDE is calculus up to homotopy on the horizontal De Rham algebra of the associated diffiety. We will review the fundamentals of Secondary Calculus including its main motivations. In the last part of the paper, we will try to explain the role of homotopy in the theory.

Holomorphic Jacobi Manifolds

In this paper, we develop holomorphic Jacobi structures. Holomorphic Jacobi manifolds are in one-to-one correspondence with certain homogeneous holomorphic Poisson manifolds. Furthermore, holomorphic Poisson manifolds can be looked at as special cases of holomorphic Jacobi manifolds. We show that holomorphic Jacobi structures yield a much richer framework than that of holomorphic Poisson structures. We also discuss the relationship between holomorphic Jacobi structures, generalized contact bundles and Jacobi-Nijenhuis structures.

Homogeneous G-structures

The theory of $G$-structures provides us with a unified framework for a large class of geometric structures, including symplectic, complex and Riemannian structures, as well as foliations and many others. Surprisingly, contact geometry - the "odd-dimensional counterpart" of symplectic geometry - does not fit naturally into this picture. In this paper, we introduce the notion of a homogeneous $G$-structure, which encompasses contact structures, as well as some other interesting examples that appear in the literature.

Strongly homotopy Lie algebras and deformations of calibrated submanifolds

For an element $Ψ$ in the graded vector space $Ω^*(M, TM)$ of tangent bundle valued forms on a smooth manifold $M$, a $Ψ$-submanifold is defined as a submanifold $N$ of $M$ such that $Ψ_{|N} \in Ω^*(N, TN)$. The class of $Ψ$-submanifolds encompasses calibrated submanifolds, complex submanifolds and all Lie subgroups in compact Lie groups. The graded vector space $Ω^*(M, TM)$ carries a natural graded Lie algebra structure, given by the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket $[-,- ]^{FN}$. When $Ψ$ is an odd degree element with $[ Ψ, Ψ]^{FN} =0$, we associate to a $Ψ$-submanifold $N$ a strongly homotopy Lie algebra, which governs the formal and (under certain assumptions) smooth deformations of $N$ as a $Ψ$-submanifold, and we show that under certain assumptions these deformations form an analytic variety. As an application we revisit formal and smooth deformation theory of complex closed submanifolds and of $φ$-calibrated closed submanifolds, where $φ$ is a parallel form in a real analytic Riemannian manifold.

Generalized Contact Bundles

In this Note, we propose a line bundle approach to odd-dimensional analogues of generalized complex structures. This new approach has three main advantages: (1) it encompasses all existing ones; (2) it elucidates the geometric meaning of the integrability condition for generalized contact structures; (3) in light of new results on multiplicative forms and Spencer operators, it allows a simple interpretation of the defining equations of a generalized contact structure in terms of Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids.

Vector Bundle Valued Differential Forms on $\mathbb{N} Q$-manifolds

Geometric structures on $\mathbb N Q$-manifolds, i.e.~non-negatively graded manifolds with an homological vector field, encode non-graded geometric data on Lie algebroids and their higher analogues. A particularly relevant class of structures consists of vector bundle valued differential forms. Symplectic forms, contact structures and, more generally, distributions are in this class. We describe vector bundle valued differential forms on non-negatively graded manifolds in terms of non-graded geometric data. Moreover, we use this description to present, in a unified way, novel proofs of known results, and new results about degree one $\mathbb N Q$-manifolds equipped with certain geometric structures, namely symplectic structures, contact structures, involutive distributions (already present in literature) and locally conformal symplectic structures, and generic vector bundle valued higher order forms, in particular presymplectic and multisymplectic structures (not yet present in literature).

L-infinity Algebras From Multicontact Geometry

I define higher codimensional versions of contact structures on manifolds as maximally non-integrable distributions. I call them multicontact structures. Cartan distributions on jet spaces provide canonical examples. More generally, I define higher codimensional versions of pre-contact structures as distributions on manifolds whose characteristic symmetries span a constant dimensional distribution. I call them pre-multicontact structures. Every distribution is almost everywhere, locally, a pre-multicontact structure. After showing that the standard symplectization of contact manifolds generalizes naturally to a (pre-)multisymplectization of (pre-)multicontact manifolds, I make use of results by C. Rogers and M. Zambon to associate a canonical $L_{\infty}$-algebra to any (pre-)multicontact structure. Such $L_{\infty}$-algebra is a multicontact version of the Jacobi bracket on a contact manifold. However, unlike the multisymplectic $L_\infty$-algebra of Rogers and Zambon, the multicontact $L_\infty$-algebra is always a homological resolution of a Lie algebra. Finally, I describe in local coordinates the $L_{\infty}$-algebra associated to the Cartan distribution on jet spaces.

Tulczyjew Triples in Higher Derivative Field Theory

The geometrical structure known as Tulczyjew triple has been used with success in analytical mechanics and first order field theory to describe a wide range of physical systems including Lagrangian/Hamiltonian systems with constraints and/or sources, or with singular Lagrangian. Starting from the first principles of the variational calculus we derive Tulczyjew triples for classical field theories of arbitrary high order, i.e. depending on arbitrary high derivatives of the fields. A first triple appears as the result of considering higher order theories as first order ones with configurations being constrained to be holonomic jets. A second triple is obtained after a reduction procedure aimed at getting rid of nonphysical degrees of freedom. This picture we present is fully covariant and complete: it contains both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms, in particular the Euler-Lagrange equations. Notice that, the required Geometry of jet bundles is affine (as opposed to the linear Geometry of the tangent bundle). Accordingly, the notions of affine duality and affine phase space play a distinguished role in our picture. In particular the Tulczyjew triples in this paper consist of morphisms of double affine-vector bundles which, moreover, preserve suitable presymplectic structures.

On the Strong Homotopy Associative Algebra of a Foliation

An involutive distribution $C$ on a smooth manifold $M$ is a Lie-algebroid acting on sections of the normal bundle $TM/C$. It is known that the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex associated to this representation of $C$ possesses the structure $\mathbb{X}$ of a strong homotopy Lie-Rinehart algebra. It is natural to interpret $\mathbb{X}$ as the (derived) Lie-Rinehart algebra of vector fields on the space $\mathbb{P}$ of integral manifolds of $C$. In this paper, I show that $\mathbb{X}$ is embedded in a strong homotopy associative algebra $\mathbb{D}$ of (normal) differential operators. It is natural to interpret $\mathbb{D}$ as the (derived) associative algebra of differential operators on $\mathbb{P}$. Finally, I speculate about the interpretation of $\mathbb{D}$ as the universal enveloping strong homotopy algebra of $\mathbb{X}$.

Characteristics, Bicharacteristics, and Geometric Singularities of Solutions of PDEs

Many physical systems are described by partial differential equations (PDEs). Determinism then requires the Cauchy problem to be well-posed. Even when the Cauchy problem is well-posed for generic Cauchy data, there may exist characteristic Cauchy data. Characteristics of PDEs play an important role both in Mathematics and in Physics. I will review the theory of characteristics and bicharacteristics of PDEs, with a special emphasis on intrinsic aspects, i.e., those aspects which are invariant under general changes of coordinates. After a basically analytic introduction, I will pass to a modern, geometric point of view, presenting characteristics within the jet space approach to PDEs. In particular, I will discuss the relationship between characteristics and singularities of solutions and observe that: "wave-fronts are characteristic surfaces and propagate along bicharacteristics". This remark may be understood as a mathematical formulation of the wave/particle duality in optics and/or quantum mechanics. The content of the paper reflects the three hour minicourse that I gave at the XXII International Fall Workshop on Geometry and Physics, September 2-5, 2013, Evora, Portugal.

On the Strong Homotopy Lie-Rinehart Algebra of a Foliation

It is well known that a foliation F of a smooth manifold M gives rise to a rich cohomological theory, its characteristic (i.e., leafwise) cohomology. Characteristic cohomologies of F may be interpreted, to some extent, as functions on the space P of integral manifolds (of any dimension) of the characteristic distribution C of F. Similarly, characteristic cohomologies with local coefficients in the normal bundle TM/C of F may be interpreted as vector fields on P. In particular, they possess a (graded) Lie bracket and act on characteristic cohomology H. In this paper, I discuss how both the Lie bracket and the action on H come from a strong homotopy structure at the level of cochains. Finally, I show that such a strong homotopy structure is canonical up to isomorphisms.

The Blackholic energy and the canonical Gamma-Ray Burst

We outline the main results of our GRB model, based on the three interpretation paradigms we proposed in July 2001, comparing and contrasting them with the ones in the current literature. Thanks to the observations by Swift and by VLT, this analysis points to a "canonical GRB" originating from markedly different astrophysical scenarios. The communality is that they are all emitted in the formation of a black hole with small or null angular momentum. The following sequence appears to be canonical: the vacuum polarization process creating an optically thick self accelerating electron-positron plasma; the engulfment of baryonic mass during the plasma expansion; the adiabatic expansion of the optically thick "fireshell" up to the transparency; the interaction of the remaining accelerated baryons with the interstellar medium (ISM). This leads to the canonical GRB composed of a proper GRB (P-GRB), emitted at the moment of transparency, followed by an extended afterglow. The parameters are the plasma total energy, the fireshell baryon loading and the ISM filamentary distribution around the source. In the limit of no baryon loading the total energy is radiated in the P-GRB. In this limit, the canonical GRBs explain as well the short GRBs.

Black hole physics and astrophysics: The GRB-Supernova connection and URCA-1 - URCA-2

We outline the confluence of three novel theoretical fields in our modeling of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs): 1) the ultrarelativistic regime of a shock front expanding with a Lorentz gamma factor $\sim 300$; 2) the quantum vacuum polarization process leading to an electron-positron plasma originating the shock front; and 3) the general relativistic process of energy extraction from a black hole originating the vacuum polarization process. There are two different classes of GRBs: the long GRBs and the short GRBs. We here address the issue of the long GRBs. [...] We are specially interested, in this report, to a subclass of long GRBs which appear to be accompanied by a supernova explosion. We are considering two specific examples: GRB980425/SN1998bw and GRB030329/SN2003dh [...].

Extracting energy from black holes: "long" and "short" GRBs and their astrophysical settings

The introduction of the three interpretational paradigms for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and recent progress in understanding the X- and gamma ray luminosity in the afterglow allow us to make assessments about the astrophysical settings of GRBs. In particular, we evidence the distinct possibility that some GRBs occur in a binary system. This subclass of GRBs manifests itself in a "tryptich": one component formed by the collapse of a massive star to a black hole, which originates the GRB; a second component by a supernova and a third one by a young neutron star born in the supernova event. Similarly, the understanding of the physics of quantum relativistic processes during the gravitational collapse makes possible precise predictions about the structure of short GRBs.

The Blackholic energy: long and short Gamma-Ray Bursts (New perspectives in physics and astrophysics from the theoretical understanding of Gamma-Ray Bursts, II)

[...] We turn then to the theoretical developments in the short GRBs: we first report some progress in the understanding the dynamical phase of collapse, the mass-energy formula and the extraction of blackholic energy which have been motivated by the analysis of the short GRBs. In this context progress has also been accomplished on establishing an absolute lower limit to the irreducible mass of the black hole as well as on some critical considerations about the relations of general relativity and the second law of thermodynamics. We recall how this last issue has been one of the most debated in theoretical physics in the past thirty years due to the work of Bekenstein and Hawking. Following these conceptual progresses we analyze the vacuum polarization process around an overcritical collapsing shell. We evidence the existence of a separatrix and a dyadosphere trapping surface in the dynamics of the electron-positron plasma generated during the process of gravitational collapse. We then analyze, using recent progress in the solution of the Vlasov-Boltzmann-Maxwell system, the oscillation regime in the created electron-positron plasma and their rapid convergence to a thermalized spectrum. We conclude by making precise predictions for the spectra, the energy fluxes and characteristic time-scales of the radiation for short-bursts. If the precise luminosity variation and spectral hardening of the radiation we have predicted will be confirmed by observations of short-bursts, these systems will play a major role as standard candles in cosmology. These considerations will also be relevant for the analysis of the long-bursts when the baryonic matter contribution will be taken into account.
