Entanglement properties and ground-state statistics of free bosons

We calculate analytically the entanglement and Rényi entropies, the negativity and the mutual information together with all the density and many-particle correlation functions for free bosons on a lattice in the ground state, for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems. We show that all those quantities can be derived from a multinomial form of the reduced density matrix in the configuration space whose diagonal elements dictate the statistics of the particle distribution, while the off-diagonal coherence terms control the quantum fluctuations. We provide by this analysis a unified approach based on a reduced density matrix technique useful to calculate both the entanglement properties and an infinite number of correlation functions.

Reflection, transmission and surface susceptibility tensor in two-dimensional materials

In a recent experiment, the out-of-plane surface susceptibility of a single-layer two-dimensional atom crystal in the visible spectrum has been measured. This susceptibility gives a measurable contribution to the reflectivity of two-dimensional materials. Here we provide a complete theoretical description of the reflective properties, considering incoming s and p polarized plane waves at any angle of incidence on the crystal, computing local, reflected and transmitted electromagnetic fields. We finally connect the microscopic polarizability to both the in-plane and the out-of-plane macroscopic surface susceptibilities.

Edge states of the long-range Kitaev chain: an analytical study

We analyze the properties of the edge states of the one-dimensional Kitaev model with long-range anisotropic pairing and tunneling. Tunneling and pairing are assumed to decay algebraically with exponents $α$ and $β$, respectively, and $α,β>1$. We determine analytically the decay of the edges modes. We show that the decay is exponential for $α=β$ and when the coefficients scaling tunneling and pairing terms are equal. Otherwise, the decay is exponential at sufficiently short distances and then algebraic at the asymptotics. We show that the exponent of the algebraic tail is determined by the smallest exponent between $α$ and $β$. Our predictions are in agreement with numerical results found by exact diagonalization and in the literature.

On the descriptive power of Neural-Networks as constrained Tensor Networks with exponentially large bond dimension

In many cases, Neural networks can be mapped into tensor networks with an exponentially large bond dimension. Here, we compare different sub-classes of neural network states, with their mapped tensor network counterpart for studying the ground state of short-range Hamiltonians. We show that when mapping a neural network, the resulting tensor network is highly constrained and thus the neural network states do in general not deliver the naive expected drastic improvement against the state-of-the-art tensor network methods. We explicitly show this result in two paradigmatic examples, the 1D ferromagnetic Ising model and the 2D antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, addressing the lack of a detailed comparison of the expressiveness of these increasingly popular, variational ansätze.

Clausius-Mossotti Lorentz-Lorenz relations and retardation effects for two-dimensional crystals

The macroscopic surface electric susceptibility determines the linear optical properties of an insulating single-layer two-dimensional atomic crystal, and can be expressed in terms of the microscopic polarizability of the atoms. We compute the local electric field acting on a single atom, both for the static and the dynamic case, as the superposition of the external applied electric field and the fields generated by the induced dipoles in the crystal. We find that, in the dynamic case, retardation effects dephase the local electric field with respect to the incident one. This explains why the Fresnel coefficients of a single-layer two-dimensional atomic crystal are intrinsically complex quantities, even when a null macroscopic surface conductivity is assumed.

Spreading of correlations and Loschmidt echo after quantum quenches of a Bose gas in the Aubry-André potential

We study the spreading of density-density correlations and the Loschmidt echo, after different sudden quenches in an interacting one dimensional Bose gas on a lattice, also in the presence of a superimposed aperiodic potential. We use a time dependent Bogoliubov approach to calculate the evolution of the correlation functions and employ the linked cluster expansion to derive the Loschmidt echo.

Using magnetic stripes to stabilize superfluidity in electron-hole double monolayer graphene

Experiments have confirmed that double monolayer graphene cannot generate finite temperature electron-hole superfluidity. This has been shown to be due to very strong screening of the electron-hole pairing attraction. The linear dispersing energy bands in monolayer graphene prevent attempts to reduce the strength of the screening. We propose a new hybrid device in which the two sheets of monolayer graphene are placed in a modulated periodic perpendicular magnetic field. Such a magnetic field preserves the isotropic Dirac cones of the original monolayers but it reduces the slope of the cones so that the monolayer Fermi velocity $v_F$ is smaller. We show that with current experimental techniques, this reduction in $v_F$ can sufficiently weaken the screening to permit electron-hole superfluidity at measurable temperatures.

Enhancement of critical temperatures in disordered bipartite lattices

We study the strong enhancement, induced by random hopping, of the critical temperatures characterizing the transitions to superconductivity, charge-density wave and antiferromagnetism, which can occur in bipartite lattice models at half-filling, like graphene, by means of an extended Finkel'stein non-linear $σ$-model renormalization group approach. We show that, if Cooper channel interaction dominates, superconducting critical temperature can be enhanced at will, since superconductivity cannot be broken by entering any Anderson insulating phase. If, instead, staggered interactions are relevant, antiferromagnetic order is generated by disorder at a temperature well above that expected for a clean system.

Analytical approach to the two-site Bose-Hubbard model: from Fock states to Schrödinger cat states and entanglement entropy

We study the interpolation from occupation number Fock states to Schrödinger cat states on systems modeled by two-mode Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, like, for instance, bosons in a double well or superconducting Cooper pair boxes. In the repulsive interaction regime, by a simplified single particle description, we calculate, analytically, energy, number fluctuations, stability under coupling to a heat bath, entanglement entropy and Fisher information, all in terms of hypergeometric polynomials of the single particle overlap parameter. Our approach allows us to find how those quantities scale with the number of bosons. In the attractive interaction regime we calculate the same physical quantities in terms of the imbalance parameter, and find that the symmetry breaking, occurring at interaction Uc, predicted by a semiclassical approximation, is valid only in the limit of infinite number of bosons. For a large but finite number, we determine a characteristic strength of interaction, Uc*, which can be promoted as the crossover point from coherent to incoherent regimes and can be identified as the collapse threshold. Moreover, we find that the Fisher information is always in direct ratio to the variance of on-site number of bosons, for both positive and negative interactions. We finally show that the entanglement entropy is maximum close to Uc* and exceeds its coherent value within the whole range of interaction between 2Uc and zero.

How localized bosons manage to become superfluid

We study the superfluid-to-Bose glass transition in a disordered Bose-Hubbard model through a very simple variational wavefunction: a permanent of non-orthogonal single-particle wavefunctions that are variationally determined. The transition is identified by the behavior of the superfluid stiffness. We also introduce a less rigorous but very enlightening criterium for the transition, which is related to the overlap matrix among the single-particle wavefunctions that are used to built the permanent. We find that the two criteria agree quite well. We finally consider a further quantity, the bipartite entanglement entropy, which also provides a good estimator for the superfluid-to-Bose glass transition.

Magnetic superlattice and finite-energy Dirac points in graphene

We study the band structure of graphene's Dirac-Weyl quasi-particles in a one-dimensional magnetic superlattice formed by a periodic sequence of alternating magnetic barriers. The spectrum and the nature of the states strongly depend on the conserved longitudinal momentum and on the barrier width. At the center of the superlattice Brillouin zone we find new Dirac points at finite energies where the dispersion is highly anisotropic, in contrast to the dispersion close to the neutrality point which remains isotropic. This finding suggests the possibility of collimating Dirac-Weyl quasi-particles by tuning the doping.

Effect of random on-site energies on the critical temperature of a lattice Bose gas

We study the effect of random on-site energies on the critical temperature of a non-interacting Bose gas on a lattice. In our derivation the on-site energies are distributed according a Gaussian probability distribution function having vanishing average and variance $v_o^2$. By using the replicated action obtained by averaging on the disorder, we perform a perturbative expansion for the Green functions of the disordered system. We evaluate the shift of the chemical potential induced by the disorder and we compute, for $v_o^2 << 1$, the critical temperature for condensation. We find that, for large filling, disorder slightly enhances the critical temperature for condensation.

Kondo impurity on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling

We consider a Kondo-like impurity interacting with fermions on a honeycomb lattice at half-filling, as in the case of graphene. We derive from the lattice model an effective one-dimensional continuum theory which has, in general, four flavors with angular momentum mixing in the presence of internode scattering processes and six couplings in the spin-isotropic case. Under particular conditions, however, it can be reduced to a single-coupling multichannel pseudogap Kondo model. We finally calculate, in the presence of an energy dependent Fermi velocity, induced by Coulomb interaction, the critical coupling in the large-N expansion, the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat.

Fermi surface fluctuations and single electron excitations near Pomeranchuk instability in two dimensions

A metallic electron system near an orientational symmetry breaking Pomeranchuk instability is characterized by a ''soft'' Fermi surface with enhanced collective fluctuations. We analyze fluctuation effects in a two-dimensional electron system on a square lattice in the vicinity of a Pomeranchuk instability with d-wave symmetry, using a phenomenological model which includes interactions with a small momentum transfer only. We compute the dynamical density correlations with a d-wave form factor for small momenta and frequencies, the dynamical effective interaction due to fluctuation exchange, and the electron self-energy. At the quantum critical point the density correlations and the dynamical forward scattering interaction diverge with a dynamical exponent z=3. The singular forward scattering leads to large self-energy corrections, which destroy Fermi liquid behavior over the whole Fermi surface except near the Brillouin zone diagonal. The decay rate of single-particle excitations, which is related to the width of the peaks in the spectral function, exceeds the excitation energy in the low-energy limit. The dispersion of maxima in the spectra flattens strongly near those portions of the Fermi surface which are remote from the zone diagonal.
