Normal forms for strong magnetic systems on surfaces: Trapping regions and rigidity of Zoll systems

We prove a normal form for strong magnetic fields on a closed, oriented surface and use it to derive two dynamical results for the associated flow. First, we show the existence of KAM tori and trapping regions provided a natural non-resonance condition holds. Second, we prove that the flow cannot be Zoll unless (i) the Riemannian metric has constant curvature and the magnetic function is constant, or (ii) the magnetic function vanishes and the metric is Zoll. We complement the second result by exhibiting an exotic magnetic field on a flat two-torus yielding a Zoll flow for arbitrarily small rescalings.

The Palais-Smale condition for the Hamiltonian action on a mixed regularity space of loops in cotangent bundles and applications

We show that the Hamiltonian action satisfies the Palais-Smale condition over a "mixed regularity" space of loops in cotangent bundles, namely the space of loops with regularity $H^s$, $s\in (\frac 12, 1)$, in the base and $H^{1-s}$ in the fiber direction. As an application, we give a simplified proof of a theorem of Hofer-Viterbo on the existence of closed characteristic leaves for certain contact type hypersufaces in cotangent bundles.

On the rigidity of Zoll magnetic systems on surfaces

In this paper we study rigidity aspects of Zoll magnetic systems on closed surfaces. We characterize magnetic systems on surfaces of positive genus given by constant curvature metrics and constant magnetic functions as the only magnetic systems such that the associated Hamiltonian flow is Zoll, i.e. every orbit is closed, on every energy level. We also prove the persistence of possibly degenerate closed geodesics under magnetic perturbations in different instances.

Waist theorems for Tonelli systems in higher dimensions

We study the periodic orbits problem on energy levels of Tonelli Lagrangian systems over configuration spaces of arbitrary dimension. We show that, when the fundamental group is finite and the Lagrangian has no stationary orbit at the Mañé critical energy level, there is a waist on every energy level just above the Mañé critical value. With a suitable perturbation with a potential, we show that there are infinitely many periodic orbits on every energy level just above the Mañé critical value, and on almost every energy level just below. Finally, we prove the Tonelli analogue of a closed geodesics result due to Ballmann-Thorbergsson-Ziller.

On the existence of Euler-Lagrange orbits satisfying the conormal boundary conditions

Let $(M,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold, $L: TM\rightarrow \mathbb R$ be a Tonelli Lagrangian. Given two closed submanifolds $Q_0$ and $Q_1$ of $M$ and a real number $k$, we study the existence of Euler-Lagrange orbits with energy $k$ connecting $Q_0$ to $Q_1$ and satisfying the conormal boundary conditions. We introduce the Mañé critical value which is relevant for this problem and discuss existence results for supercritical and subcritical energies. We also provide counterexamples showing that all the results are sharp.

On the periodic motions of a charged particle in an oscillating magnetic field on the two-torus

Let $(\mathbb T^2,g)$ be a Riemannian two-torus and let $σ$ be an oscillating $2$-form on $\mathbb T^2$. We show that for almost every small positive number $k$ the magnetic flow of the pair $(g,σ)$ has infinitely many periodic orbits with energy $k$. This result complements the analogous statement for closed surfaces of genus at least $2$ [Asselle and Benedetti, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations, 2015] and at the same time extends the main theorem in [Abbondandolo, Macarini, Mazzucchelli, and Paternain, J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS), to appear] to the non-exact oscillating case.

Smooth Hamilton-Jacobi solutions for the Horocycle flow

In this paper we compute all the smooth solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation associated with the horocycle flow. This can be seen as the Euler-Lagrange flow (restricted to the energy level set $E^{-1}(\frac 12)$) defined by the Tonelli Lagrangian $L:T\mathbb H\rightarrow \mathbb R$ given by (hyperbolic) kinetic energy plus the standard magnetic potential. The method we use is to look at Lagrangian graphs that are contained in the level set $\{H=\frac 12\}$, where $H:T^*\mathbb H\rightarrow \mathbb R$ denotes the Hamiltonian dual to $L$.

Infinitely many periodic orbits in non-exact oscillating magnetic fields on surfaces with genus at least two for almost every low energy level

In this paper we consider oscillating non-exact magnetic fields on surfaces with genus at least two and show that for almost every energy level $k$ below a certain value $τ_+^*(g,σ)$ less than or equal to the "Mañé critical value of the universal cover" there are infinitely many closed magnetic geodesics with energy $k$.

On the existence of orbits satisfying periodic or conormal boundary conditions for Euler-Lagrange flows

Let $(M,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold and $L:TM\rightarrow \mathbb R$ be a Tonelli Lagrangian. In this thesis we study the existence of orbits of the Euler-Lagrange flow associated with $L$ satisfying suitable boundary conditions. We first look for orbits connecting two given closed submanifolds of $M$ satisfying the conormal boundary conditions: We introduce the Mañé critical value that is relevant for the problem and prove existence results for supercritical and subcritical energies; we also complement these with counterexamples, thus showing the sharpness of our results. We then move to the problem of finding periodic orbits: We provide an existence result of periodic orbits for non-aspherical manifolds generalizing the Lusternik-Fet Theorem, and a multiplicity result in case the configuration space is the 2-torus.
