Confined run-and-tumble swimmers in one dimension

The persistent character of the motion of active particles gives rise to accumulation at boundaries. I investigate the problem of run-and-tumble swimmers confined in a 1D box with hard walls, reporting expressions for the particles probability distribution and wall pressure. A crossover box length value is found below which the initial value of the pressure turns out to be higher than the asymptotic one, indicating a bounce effect of the active "wave" of swimmers. The case of attracting and repelling boundaries are also investigated using two different tumble rates for particles in the bulk and at walls. Escape problems are finally analyzed by considering partially permeable walls through which particles can leave the box.

Probability distributions for the run-and-tumble models with variable speed and tumbling rate

In this paper we consider a telegraph equation with time-dependent coefficients, governing the persistent random walk of a particle moving on the line with a time-varying velocity $c(t)$ and changing direction at instants distributed according to a non-stationary Poisson distribution with rate $λ(t)$. We show that, under suitable assumptions, we are able to find the exact form of the probability distribution. We also consider the space-fractional counterpart of this model, finding the characteristic function of the related process. A conclusive discussion is devoted to the potential applications to run-and-tumble models.

Run-and-tumble particles, telegrapher's equation and absorption problems with partially reflecting boundaries

Absorption problems of run-and-tumble particles, described by the telegrapher's equation, are analyzed in one space dimension considering partially reflecting boundaries. Exact expressions for the probability distribution function in the Laplace domain and for the mean time to absorption are given, discussing some interesting limits (Brownian and wave limit, large volume limit) and different case studies (semi-infinite segment, equal and symmetric boundaries, totally/partially reflecting boundaries).

Shape and Displacement Fluctuations in Soft Vesicles Filled by Active Particles

We investigate numerically the dynamics of shape and displacement fluctuations of two-dimensional flexible vesicles filled with active particles. At low concentration most of the active particles accumulate at the boundary of the vesicle where positive particle number fluctuations are amplified by trapping, leading to the formation of pinched spots of high density, curvature and pressure. At high concentration the active particles cover the vesicle boundary almost uniformly, resulting in fairly homogeneous pressure and curvature, and nearly circular vesicle shape. The change between polarized and spherical shapes is driven by the number of active particles. The center-of-mass of the vesicle performs a persistent random walk with a long time diffusivity that is strongly enhanced for elongated active particles due to orientational correlations in their direction of propulsive motion. In our model shape-shifting induces directional sensing and the cell spontaneously migrate along the polarization direction.

Generalized energy equipartition in harmonic oscillators driven by active baths

We study experimentally and numerically the dynamics of colloidal beads confined by a harmonic potential in a bath of swimming E. coli bacteria. The resulting dynamics is well approximated by a Langevin equation for an overdamped oscillator driven by the combination of a white thermal noise and an exponentially correlated active noise. This scenario leads to a simple generalization of the equipartition theorem resulting in the coexistence of two different effective temperatures that govern dynamics along the flat and the curved directions in the potential landscape.

A stroll in the energy landscape

We review recent results on the potential energy landscape (PES) of model liquids. The role of saddle-points in the PES in connecting dynamics to statics is investigated, confirming that a change between minima-dominated and saddle-dominated regions of the PES explored in equilibrium happens around the Mode Coupling Temperature. The structure of the low-energy saddles in the basins is found to be simple and hierarchically organized; the presence of saddles nearby in energy to the local minima indicates that, at non-cryogenic temperatures, entropic bottlenecks limit the dynamics.

Glassy behavior of light in random lasers

A theoretical analysis [Angelani et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 065702 (2006)] predicts glassy behaviour of light in a nonlinear random medium. This implies slow dynamics related to the presence of many metastable states. We consider very general equations (that also apply to other systems, like Bose-Condensed gases) describing light in a disordered non-linear medium and through some approximations we relate them to a mean-field spin-glass-like model. The model is solved by the replica method, and replica-symmetry breaking phase transition is predicted. The transition describes a mode-locking process in which the phases of the modes are locked to random (history and sample-dependent) values. The results are based on very general theory, and embrace a variety of physical phenomena.
