A note on the critical Laplace Equation and Ricci curvature

We study strictly positive solutions to the critical Laplace equation \[ - Δu = n(n-2) u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}, \] decaying at most like $d(o, x)^{-(n-2)/2}$, on complete noncompact manifolds $(M, g)$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature, of dimension $n \geq 3$. We prove that, under an additional mild assumption on the volume growth, such a solution does not exist, unless $(M, g)$ is isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $u$ is a Talenti function. The method employs an elementary analysis of a suitable function defined along the level sets of $u$.

Minimising hulls, p-capacity and isoperimetric inequality on complete Riemannian manifolds

The notion of strictly outward minimising hull is investigated for open sets of finite perimeter sitting inside a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under natural geometric assumptions on the ambient manifold, the strictly outward minimising hull $Ω^*$ of a set $Ω$ is characterised as a maximal volume solution of the least area problem with obstacle, where the obstacle is the set itself. In the case where $Ω$ has $\mathscr{C}^{1, α}$-boundary, the area of $\partial Ω^*$ is recovered as the limit of the $p$-capacities of $Ω$, as $p \to 1^+$. Finally, building on the existence of strictly outward minimising exhaustions, a sharp isoperimetric inequality is deduced on complete noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, provided $3 \leq n \leq 7$.

Minkowski Inequalities via Nonlinear Potential Theory

In this paper, we prove an extended version of the Minkowski Inequality, holding for any smooth bounded set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 3$. Our proof relies on the discovery of effective monotonicity formulas holding along the level set flow of the $p$-capacitary potentials associated with $Ω$, for every $p$ sufficiently close to $1$. Besides constituting a neat improvement of those introduced in [Fog_Maz_Pin] to treat the case of convex domains, these formulas testify the existence of a link between the monotonicity formulas derived by Colding and Minicozzi for the level set flow of Green's functions and the monotonicity formulas employed by Huisken, Ilmanen and several other authors in studying the geometric implications of the Inverse Mean Curvature Flow. In dimension $n\geq 8$, our conclusions are stronger than the ones obtained so far through the latter mentioned technique.

On the mass of static metrics with positive cosmological constant - I

In this paper we propose and discuss a notion of mass for compact static metrics with positive cosmological constant. As a consequence, we characterise the de Sitter solution as the only static vacuum metric with zero mass. Finally, we show how to adapt our analysis to the case of negative cosmological constant, leading to a uniqueness theorem for the Anti de Sitter spacetime.

Some Sphere Theorems in Linear Potential Theory

In this paper we analyze the capacitary potential due to a charged body in order to deduce sharp analytic and geometric inequalities, whose equality cases are saturated by domains with spherical symmetry. In particular, for a regular bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, we prove that if the mean curvature $H$ of the boundary obeys the condition $$ - \bigg[ \frac{1}{\text{Cap}(Ω)} \bigg]^{\frac{1}{n-2}} \leq \frac{H}{n-1} \leq \bigg[ \frac{1}{\text{Cap}(Ω)} \bigg]^{\frac{1}{n-2}} , $$ then $Ω$ is a round ball.

Monotonicity formulas for static metrics with non-zero cosmological constant

In this paper we study non-singular vacuum static space-times with non-zero cosmological constant. We introduce new integral quantities, and under suitable assumptions we prove their monotonicity along the level set flow of the static potential. We then show how to use these properties to derive a number of sharp geometric and analytic inequalities, whose equality case can be used to characterize the rotational symmetry of the underlying static solutions. As a consequence, we are able to prove some new uniqueness statements for the de Sitter and the anti-de Sitter metrics. In particular, we show that the de Sitter solution has the least possible surface gravity among three-dimensional static metrics with connected boundary and positive cosmological constant.

On the geometry of the level sets of bounded static potentials

In this paper we present a new approach to the study of asymptotically flat static metrics arising in general relativity. In the case where the static potential is bounded, we introduce new quantities which are proven to be monotone along the level set flow of the potential function. We then show how to use these properties to detect the rotational symmetry of the static solutions, deriving a number of sharp inequalities. As a consequence of our analysis, a simple proof of the classical $3$-dimensional Black Hole Uniqueness Theorem is recovered and some geometric conditions are discussed under which the same statement holds in higher dimensions.

On the Kummer construction for Kcsc metrics

Given a compact constant scalar curvature Kaehler orbifold, with nontrivial holomorphic vector fields, whose singularities admit a local ALE Kaehler Ricci-flat resolution, we find sufficient conditions on the position of the singular points to ensure the existence of a global constant scalar curvature Kaehler desingularization. This generalizes the results previously obtained by the first author with F. Pacard. A series of explicit examples is discussed.

Gradient Einstein solitons

In this paper we consider a perturbation of the Ricci solitons equation proposed by J. P. Bourguignon in \cite{jpb1}. We show that these structures are more rigid then standard Ricci solitons. In particular, we prove that there is only one complete three--dimensional, positively curved, Riemannian manifold satisfying $$ Ric -\frac{1}{2} R \, g \, + \, \nabla^2 f \, = \,0\,, $$ for some smooth function $f$. This solution is rotationally symmetric and asymptotically cylindrical and it represents the analogue of the Hamilton's cigar in dimension three. The key ingredient in the proof is the rectifiability of the potential function $f$. It turns out that this property holds also in the Lorentzian setting and for a more general class of structures which includes some gravitational theories.

On the global structure of conformal gradient solitons with nonnegative Ricci tensor

In this paper we prove that any complete conformal gradient soliton with nonnegative Ricci tensor is either isometric to a direct product $\mathbb{R}\times N^{n-1}$, or globally conformally equivalent to the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ or to the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$. In particular, we show that any complete, noncompact, gradient Yamabe-type soliton with positive Ricci tensor is rotationally symmetric, whenever the potential function is nonconstant.

Connected sum construction for $σ_k$-Yamabe metrics

In this paper we produce families of Riemannian metrics with positive constant $σ_k$-curvature equal to $2^{-k} {n \choose k}$ by performing the connected sum of two given compact {\em non degenerate} $n$--dimensional solutions $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ of the (positive) $σ_k$-Yamabe problem, provided $2 \leq 2k < n$. The problem is equivalent to solve a second order fully nonlinear elliptic equation.

Refined gluing for Vacuum Einstein constraint equations

We first show that the connected sum along submanifolds introduced by the second author for compact initial data sets of the vacuum Einstein system can be adapted to the asymptotically Euclidean and to the asymptotically hyperbolic context. Then, we prove that in any case, and generically, the gluing procedure can be localized, in order to obtain new solutions which coincide with the original ones outside of a neighborhood of the gluing locus.
