Type-0 singularities in the network flow -- Evolution of trees

The motion by curvature of networks is the generalization to finite union of curves of the curve shortening flow. This evolution has several peculiar features, mainly due to the presence of junctions where the curves meet. In this paper we show that whenever the length of one single curve vanishes and two triple junctions coalesce, then the curvature of the evolving networks remains bounded. This topological singularity is exclusive of the network flow and it can be referred as a Type-0 singularity, in contrast to the well known Type-I and Type-II ones of the usual mean curvature flow of smooth curves or hypersurfaces, characterized by the different rates of blow up of the curvature. As a consequence, we are able to give a complete description of the evolution of tree-like networks till the first singular time, under the assumption that all the tangents flows have unit multiplicity. If the lifespan of such solutions is finite, then the curvature of the network remains bounded and we can apply the results by Ilmanen-Neves-Schulze/Lira-Mazzeo-Pluda-Saez to restart the flow after the singularity.

Non-Existence of Theta-Shaped Self-Similarly Shrinking Networks Moving by Curvature

We prove that there are no networks homeomorphic to the Greek "theta" letter (a double cell) embedded in the plane with two triple junctions with angles of $120$ degrees, such that under the motion by curvature they are self-similarly shrinking. This fact completes the classification of the self-similarly shrinking networks in the plane with at most two triple junctions.

Motion by curvature of planar networks II

We prove that the curvature flow of an embedded planar network of three curves connected through a triple junction, with fixed endpoints on the boundary of a given strictly convex domain, exists smooth until the lengths of the three curves stay far from zero. If this is the case for all times, then the evolution exists for all times and the network converges to the Steiner minimal connection between the three endpoints.

Flow by mean curvature inside a moving ambient space

We show some computations related to the motion by mean curvature flow of a submanifold inside an ambient Riemannian manifold evolving by Ricci or backward Ricci flow. Special emphasis is given to the possible generalization of Huisken's monotonicity formula and its connection with the validity of some Li--Yau--Hamilton differential Harnack--type inequalities in a moving Riemannian manifold.

On the global structure of conformal gradient solitons with nonnegative Ricci tensor

In this paper we prove that any complete conformal gradient soliton with nonnegative Ricci tensor is either isometric to a direct product $\mathbb{R}\times N^{n-1}$, or globally conformally equivalent to the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ or to the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$. In particular, we show that any complete, noncompact, gradient Yamabe-type soliton with positive Ricci tensor is rotationally symmetric, whenever the potential function is nonconstant.

Perelman's Entropy Functional at Type I Singularities of the Ricci Flow

We study blow-ups around fixed points at Type I singularities of the Ricci flow on closed manifolds using Perelman's W-functional. First, we give an alternative proof of the result obtained by Naber and Enders-Müller-Topping that blow-up limits are non-flat gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. Our second and main result relates a limit W-density at a Type I singular point to the entropy of the limit gradient shrinking soliton obtained by blowing-up at this point. In particular, we show that no entropy is lost at infinity during the blow-up process.

On Perelman's Dilaton

By means of a Kaluza-Klein type argument we show that the Perelman's F-functional is the Einstein-Hilbert action in a space with extra ``phantom'' dimensions. In this way, we try to interpret some remarks of Perelman in the introduction and at the end of the first section in his first famous paper. As a consequence the Ricci flow (modified by a diffeomorphism and a time-dependent factor) is the evolution of the ``real'' part of the metric under a constrained gradient flow of the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational action in higher dimension.
