Total Gluon Helicity Contribution to the Proton Spin from Lattice QCD

We report a state-of-the-art lattice QCD calculation of the total gluon helicity contribution to the proton spin, $ΔG$. The calculation is done on ensembles with three different lattice spacings $a=\{0.08, 0.09, 0.11\}$ fm. By employing distillation and momentum smearing for proton external states, we extract the bare matrix elements of the topological current $K^μ$ using 5-HYP smeared Coulomb gauge fixing configurations. Furthermore, we apply a non-perturbative $\mathrm{RI/MOM}$ renormalization scheme augmented by the Cluster Decomposition Error Reduction (CDER) technique to determine the renormalization constants of $K^μ$. The results obtained from different components $K^{t,i}$ (with $i$ being the direction of proton momentum or polarization) are consistent with Lorentz covariance within uncertainties. After extrapolating to the continuum limit, $ΔG$ is found to be $ΔG = 0.231(17)^{\mathrm{sta.}}(44)^{\mathrm{sym.}}$ at the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scale $μ^2=10\ \mathrm{GeV}^2$, which constitutes approximately $46(9)\%$ of the proton spin.

Quark masses and low energy constants in the continuum from the tadpole improved clover ensembles

We present the light-flavor quark masses and low energy constants using the 2+1 flavor full-QCD ensembles with stout smeared clover fermion action and Symanzik gauge actions. Both the fermion and gauge actions are tadpole improved self-consistently. The simulations are performed on 11 ensembles at 3 lattice spacings $a\in[0.05,0.11]$ fm, 4 spatial sizes $L\in[2.5, 5.1]$ fm, 7 pion masses $m_π\in[135,350]$ MeV, and several values of the strange quark mass. The quark mass is defined through the partially conserved axial current (PCAC) relation and renormalized to $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ 2 GeV through the intermediate regularization independent momentum subtraction (RI/MOM) scheme. The systematic uncertainty of using the symmetric momentum subtraction (SMOM) scheme is also included. Eventually, we predict $m_u=2.45(22)(20)$ MeV, $m_d=4.74(11)(09)$ MeV, and $m_s=98.8(2.9)(4.7)$ MeV with the systematic uncertainties from lattice spacing determination, continuum extrapolation and renormalization constant included. We also obtain the chiral condensate $Σ^{1/3}=268.6(3.6)(0.7)$ MeV and the pion decay constant $F=86.6(7)(1.4) $ MeV in the $N_f=2$ chiral limit, and the next-to-leading order low energy constants $\ell_3=2.43(54)(05)$ and $\ell_4=4.322(75)(96)$.

Meson-meson scattering lengths at maximum isospin from lattice QCD

We summarize our lattice QCD determinations of the pion-pion, pion-kaon and kaon-kaon s-wave scattering lengths at maximal isospin with a particular focus on the extrapolation to the physical point and the usage of next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory to do so. We employ data at three values of the lattice spacing and pion masses ranging from around 230 MeV to around 450 MeV, applying Luescher's finite volume method to compute the scattering lengths. We find that leading order chiral perturbation theory is surprisingly close to our data even in the kaon-kaon case for our entire range of pion masses.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: The $ρ$-resonance

We present an investigation of the Rho-meson from Nf=2+1+1 flavour lattice QCD. The calculation is performed based on gauge configuration ensembles produced by the ETM collaboration with three lattice spacing values and pion masses ranging from 230 MeV to 500 MeV. Applying the Lüscher method phase shift curves are determined for all ensembles separately. Assuming a Breit-Wigner form, the Rho-meson mass and width are determined by a fit to these phase shift curves. Mass and width combined are then extrapolated to the chiral limit, while lattice artefacts are not detectable within our statistical uncertainties. For the Rho-meson mass extrapolated to the physical point we find good agreement with experiment. The corresponding decay width differs by about two standard deviations from the experimental value.

A coupled-channel lattice study on the resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$

In this exploratory study, near-threshold scattering of $D$ and $\bar{D}^*$ meson is investigated using lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermion configurations. The calculation is performed within the coupled-channel Lüscher's finite-size formalism. The study focuses on the channel with $I^G(J^{PC})=1^+(1^{+-})$ where the resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$ was discovered. We first identify the most relevant two channels of the problem and the lattice study is performed within the two-channel scattering model. Combined with a two-channel Ross-Shaw theory, scattering parameters are extracted from the energy levels by solving the generalized eigenvalue problem. Our results on the scattering length parameters suggest that, at the particular lattice parameters that we studied, the best fitted parameters do not correspond to a peak behavior in the elastic scattering cross section near the threshold. Furthermore, within the zero-range Ross-Shaw theory, the scenario of a narrow resonance close to the threshold is disfavored beyond $3σ$ level.

Towards the understanding of $Z_c(3900)$ from lattice QCD

Within the framework of three-channel Ross-Shaw effective range theory, we derive the constraints among different parameters of the theory in the case of a narrow resonance close to the threshold of the third channel, which is relevant for the resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$. The usage of these constraint relations, together with the multi-channel Lüscher formula in lattice QCD calculations are also discussed and the strategies are outlined.

Kaon-kaon scattering at maximal isospin from $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the interaction of two kaons at maximal isospin. The calculation is based on 2+1+1 flavour gauge configurations generated by the ETM Collaboration (ETMC) featuring pion masses ranging from about 230 MeV to 450 MeV at three values of the lattice spacing. The elastic scattering length $a_0^{I=1}$ is calculated at several values of the bare strange quark and light quark masses. We find $M_K a_0 =-0.397(11)(_{-8}^{+0})$ as the result of a chiral and continuum extrapolation to the physical point. This number is compared to other lattice results.

Low-energy Scattering of $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ System And the Resonance-like Structure $Z_c(3900)$

In this exploratory lattice study, low-energy scattering of the $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ meson system is analyzed using lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ twisted mass fermion configurations with three pion mass values. The calculation is performed within single-channel Lüscher's finite-size formalism. The threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, for the $s$-wave scattering in $J^P=1^+$ channel are extracted. For the cases in our study, the interaction between the two charmed mesons is weakly repulsive. Our lattice results therefore do not support the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two mesons for the pion mass values we studied. This calculation provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$ by various experimental groups.

Pi-Pi Scattering with Nf=2+1+1 Twisted Mass Fermions

Pi-Pi scattering is investigated for the first time for Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours using Wilson twisted mass fermions. Lüscher's finite size method is used to relate energy shifts in finite volume to scattering quantities like the scattering length in the I=2 channel. The computation is performed at several pion masses and lattice spacings utilising the stochastic LapH method.

Excited spectroscopy of charmed mesons from lattice QCD

We present spectra of highly excited D and Ds mesons up to around 3.8 GeV determined using dynamical lattice QCD. We employ novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators in order to extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states. These include states with high spin and states identified as having an explicit gluonic contribution. Calculations were performed on two volumes, both with a pion mass of approximately 400 MeV, achieving a high statistical precision for both ground and excited states. We discuss our results in light of experimental observations, comment on the phenomenological implications and identify the lightest `supermultiplet' of hybrid mesons in each sector.

Excited spectroscopy of mesons containing charm quarks from lattice QCD

We present highly excited spectra of charmonium, charm-light and charm-strange mesons using the dynamical anisotropic lattices of the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. The use of novel techniques has allowed us to extract these spectra with a high degree of statistical precision, while also enabling us to observe states as high as spin-4, states with exotic quantum numbers and candidate gluonic excitations. We discuss the phenomenology of these spectra, and also present preliminary results of Dπ scattering considering only the lowest partial wave in the isospin-3/2 channel.

Tetraquarks, hadronic molecules, meson-meson scattering and disconnected contributions in lattice QCD

There are generally two types of Wick contractions in lattice QCD calculations of a correlation function --- connected and disconnected ones. The disconnected contribution is difficult to calculate and noisy, thus it is often neglected. In the context of studying tetraquarks, hadronic molecules and meson-meson scattering, we show that whenever there are both connected and singly disconnected contractions, the singly disconnected part gives the leading order contribution, and thus should never be neglected. As an explicit example, we show that information about the scalar mesons sigma, f0(980), a0(980) and kappa will be lost when neglecting the disconnected contributions.

Excited and exotic charmonium spectroscopy from lattice QCD

We present a spectrum of highly excited charmonium mesons up to around 4.5 GeV calculated using dynamical lattice QCD. Employing novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+, 2+-) and states with high spin. Calculations are performed on two lattice volumes with pion mass approximately 400 MeV and the mass determinations have high statistical precision even for excited states. We discuss the results in light of experimental observations, identify the lightest 'supermultiplet' of hybrid mesons and comment on the phenomenological implications of the spectrum of exotic mesons.

Charmonium spectroscopy from an anisotropic lattice study

We present a progress report on our study of the charmonium spectrum in full QCD on anisotropic lattices generated by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. We adopt a large basis of interpolating operators to extract the excited charmonium states using the variational method. A detailed spectrum of excited charmonium mesons in many $J^{PC}$ channels is obtained. Hybrid states with exotic and non-exotic quantum numbers are determined and preliminary results from a study of disconnected contributions to the $η_c$ are presented.

Heavy-Baryon Spectroscopy from Lattice QCD

We use a four-dimensional lattice calculation of the full-QCD (quantum chromodynamics, the non-abliean gauge theory of the strong interactions of quarks and gluons) path integrals needed to determine the masses of the charmed and bottom baryons. In the charm sector, our results are in good agreement with experiment within our systematics, except for the spin-1/2 $Ξ_{cc}$, for which we found the isospin-averaged mass to be $Ξ_{cc}$ to be $3665\pm17\pm14^{+0}_{-78}$ MeV. We predict the mass of the (isospin-averaged) spin-1/2 $Ω_{cc}$ to be $3763\pm19\pm26^{+13}_{-79}$ {MeV}. In the bottom sector, our results are also in agreement with experimental observations and other lattice calculations within our statistical and systematic errors. In particular, we find the mass of the $Ω_b$ to be consistent with the recent CDF measurement. We also predict the mass for the as yet unobserved $Ξ^\prime_b$ to be 5955(27) MeV.

Singly and Doubly Charmed J=1/2 Baryon Spectrum from Lattice QCD

We compute the masses of the singly and doubly charmed baryons in full QCD using the relativistic Fermilab action for the charm quark. For the light quarks we use domain-wall fermions in the valence sector and improved Kogut-Susskind sea quarks. We use the low-lying charmonium spectrum to tune our heavy-quark action and as a guide to understanding the discretization errors associated with the heavy quark. Our results are in good agreement with experiment within our systematics. For the Ξ_{cc}, we find the isospin-averaged mass to be M_{Ξ_{cc}} = 3665 +/- 17 +/- 14 +0 -78 MeV; the three given uncertainties are statistical, systematic and an estimate of lattice discretization errors, respectively. In addition, we predict the mass splitting of the (isospin-averaged) spin-1/2 Ω_{cc} with the Ξ_{cc} to be M_{Ω_{cc}} - M_{Ξ_{cc}} = 98 +/- 9 +/- 22 +/- 13 MeV (in this mass splitting, the leading discretization errors are also suppressed by SU(3) symmetry). Combining this splitting with our determination of M_{Ξ_{cc}} leads to our prediction of the spin-1/2 Ω_{cc} mass, M_{Ω_{cc}} = 3763 +/- 19 +/- 26 +13 -79 MeV.

A Numerical Study of Improved Quark Actions on Anisotropic Lattices

Tadpole improved Wilson quark actions with clover terms on anisotropic lattices are studied numerically. Using asymmetric lattice volumes, the pseudo-scalar meson dispersion relations are measured for 8 lowest lattice momentum modes with quark mass values ranging from the strange to the charm quark with various values of the gauge coupling $β$ and 3 different values of the bare speed of light parameter $ν$. These results can be utilized to extrapolate or interpolate to obtain the optimal value for the bare speed of light parameter $ν_{opt}(m)$ at a given gauge coupling for all bare quark mass values $m$. In particular, the optimal values of $ν$ at the physical strange and charm quark mass are given for various gauge couplings. The lattice action with these optimized parameters can then be used to study physical properties of hadrons involving either light or heavy quarks.
