Digitising SU(2) Gauge Fields and the Freezing Transition

Efficient discretisations of gauge groups are crucial with the long term perspective of using tensor networks or quantum computers for lattice gauge theory simulations. For any Lie group other than U$(1)$, however, there is no class of asymptotically dense discrete subgroups. Therefore, discretisations limited to subgroups are bound to lead to a freezing of Monte Carlo simulations at weak couplings, necessitating alternative partitionings without a group structure. In this work we provide a comprehensive analysis of this freezing for all discrete subgroups of SU$(2)$ and different classes of asymptotically dense subsets. We find that an appropriate choice of the subset allows unfrozen simulations for arbitrary couplings, though one has to be careful with varying weights of unevenly distributed points. A generalised version of the Fibonacci spiral appears to be particularly efficient and close to optimal.

Pion-pole contribution to HLbL from twisted mass lattice QCD at the physical point

We report on our computation of the pion transition form factor ${\cal F}_{P\rightarrow γ^*γ^*}$ from twisted mass lattice QCD in order to determine the numerically dominant light pseudoscalar pole contribution in the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ=(g-2)_μ$. The pion transition form factor is computed directly at the physical point. We present first results for our estimate of the pion-pole contribution with kinematic setup for the pion at rest.

PLANETAMOS, A Physics Show Musical (Phyusical)

We present a physics show musical with live physics experiments and live performed songs with live orchestral accompaniment. The musical was first put on stage in German at the Physikalische Institut, University of Bonn, on the 24th of March, 2019. Here we present the original German script as well as an English translation, including a translation of the songs. We also give brief descriptions of all the experiments employed, with photos as well as how we present the experiments. The musical tells the story of a couple, Life and Death, nicknamed Vita and Mortis, who want to buy a planet where they can settle down and raise a family. They arrive at the store Planetamos, run by the manager Luna Callisto and the scientist Jupi Mercury. The latter two present to Vita and Mortis what is required for life on a planet, as well as all of the extra features for sale, to make it that very special place for their family. Through Vita and Mortis the audience learns about the physical requirements for life on a planet orbiting a star. The show involves 14 live physics experiments. The four actors sing 7 songs, which are to well-known tunes with new lyrics, in German. During the show the singers are accompanied by a small live orchestra, consisting of a flute, an oboe, a piano, a violin, a cello, a harp and percussion. The show was developed by the University of Bonn physics students, who have all been very active in the University of Bonn Physics Show (Physikshow der Universitaet Bonn) the past few years. To the best of our knowledge this is the first physics show musical with live experiments and live song and orchestra.

Twisted mass gauge ensembles at physical values of the light, strange and charm quark masses

Lattice QCD simulations directly at physical masses of dynamical light, strange and charm quarks are highly desirable especially to remove systematic errors due to chiral extrapolations. However such simulations are still challenging. We discuss the adaption of efficient algorithms, like multi-grid methods or higher order integrators, within the molecular dynamic steps of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, that are enabling simulations of a new set of gauge ensembles by the Extended Twisted Mass collaboration (ETMC). We present the status of the on-going ETMC simulation effort that aims to enabling studies of finite size and discretization effects. We work within the twisted mass discretization which is free of odd-discretization effects at maximal twist and present our tuning procedure.

Meson-meson scattering lengths at maximum isospin from lattice QCD

We summarize our lattice QCD determinations of the pion-pion, pion-kaon and kaon-kaon s-wave scattering lengths at maximal isospin with a particular focus on the extrapolation to the physical point and the usage of next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory to do so. We employ data at three values of the lattice spacing and pion masses ranging from around 230 MeV to around 450 MeV, applying Luescher's finite volume method to compute the scattering lengths. We find that leading order chiral perturbation theory is surprisingly close to our data even in the kaon-kaon case for our entire range of pion masses.

Relativistic $N$-particle energy shift in finite volume

We present a general method for deriving the energy shift of an interacting system of $N$ spinless particles in a finite volume. To this end, we use the nonrelativistic effective field theory (NREFT), and match the pertinent low-energy constants to the scattering amplitudes. Relativistic corrections are explicitly included up to a given order in the $1/L$ expansion. We apply this method to obtain the ground state of $N$ particles, and the first excited state of two and three particles to order $L^{-6}$ in terms of the threshold parameters of the two- and three-particle relativistic scattering amplitudes. We use these expressions to analyze the $N$-particle ground state energy shift in the complex $φ^4$ theory.

Ruling Out the Massless Up-Quark Solution to the Strong CP Problem by Computing the Topological Mass Contribution with Lattice QCD

The infamous strong CP problem in particle physics can in principle be solved by a massless up quark. In particular, it was hypothesized that topological effects could substantially contribute to the observed nonzero up-quark mass without reintroducing CP violation. Alternatively to previous work using fits to chiral perturbation theory, in this Letter, we bound the strength of the topological mass contribution with direct lattice QCD simulations, by computing the dependence of the pion mass on the dynamical strange-quark mass. We find that the size of the topological mass contribution is inconsistent with the massless up-quark solution to the strong CP problem.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: The $ρ$-resonance

We present an investigation of the Rho-meson from Nf=2+1+1 flavour lattice QCD. The calculation is performed based on gauge configuration ensembles produced by the ETM collaboration with three lattice spacing values and pion masses ranging from 230 MeV to 500 MeV. Applying the Lüscher method phase shift curves are determined for all ensembles separately. Assuming a Breit-Wigner form, the Rho-meson mass and width are determined by a fit to these phase shift curves. Mass and width combined are then extrapolated to the chiral limit, while lattice artefacts are not detectable within our statistical uncertainties. For the Rho-meson mass extrapolated to the physical point we find good agreement with experiment. The corresponding decay width differs by about two standard deviations from the experimental value.

On the generalised eigenvalue method and its relation to Prony and generalised pencil of function methods

We discuss the relation of three methods to determine energy levels in lattice QCD simulations: the generalised eigenvalue, the Prony and the generalised pencil of function methods. All three can be understood as special cases of a generalised eigenvalue problem. We show analytically that the leading corrections to an energy $E_l$ in all three methods due to unresolved states decay asymptotically exponentially like $\exp(-(E_{n}-E_l)t)$. Using synthetic data we show that these corrections behave as expected also in practice. We propose a novel combination of the generalised eigenvalue and the Prony method, denoted as GEVM/PGEVM, which helps to increase the energy gap $E_{n}-E_l$. We illustrate its usage and performance using lattice QCD examples.

The Semimetal-Mott Insulator Quantum Phase Transition of the Hubbard Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

We take advantage of recent improvements in the grand canonical Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, to perform a precision study of the single-particle gap in the hexagonal Hubbard model, with on-site electron-electron interactions. After carefully controlled analyses of the Trotter error, the thermodynamic limit, and finite-size scaling with inverse temperature, we find a critical coupling of $U_c/κ=3.834(14)$ and the critical exponent $zν=1.185(43)$. Under the assumption that this corresponds to the expected anti-ferromagnetic Mott transition, we are also able to provide a preliminary estimate $β=1.095(37)$ for the critical exponent of the order parameter. We consider our findings in view of the $SU(2)$ Gross-Neveu, or chiral Heisenberg, universality class. We also discuss the computational scaling of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, and possible extensions of our work to carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and topological insulators.

Check of a new non-perturbative mechanism for elementary fermion mass generation

We consider a field theoretical model where a SU(2) fermion doublet, subjected to non-Abelian gauge interactions, is also coupled to a complex scalar field doublet via a Yukawa and an irrelevant Wilson-like term. Despite the presence of these two chiral breaking operators in the Lagrangian, an exact symmetry acting on fermions and scalars prevents perturbative mass corrections. In the phase where fermions are massless (Wigner phase) the Yukawa coupling can be tuned to a critical value at which chiral transformations acting on fermions only become a symmetry of the theory (up to cutoff effects). In the Nambu-Goldstone phase of the critical theory a fermion mass term of dynamical origin is expected to arise in the Ward identities of the purely fermionic chiral transformations. Such a non-perturbative mechanism of dynamical mass generation can provide a "natural" (à la 't Hooft) alternative to the Higgs mechanism adopted in the Standard Model. Here we lay down the theoretical framework necessary to demonstrate the existence of this mechanism by means of lattice simulations.

Kaon-kaon scattering at maximal isospin from $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the interaction of two kaons at maximal isospin. The calculation is based on 2+1+1 flavour gauge configurations generated by the ETM Collaboration (ETMC) featuring pion masses ranging from about 230 MeV to 450 MeV at three values of the lattice spacing. The elastic scattering length $a_0^{I=1}$ is calculated at several values of the bare strange quark and light quark masses. We find $M_K a_0 =-0.397(11)(_{-8}^{+0})$ as the result of a chiral and continuum extrapolation to the physical point. This number is compared to other lattice results.

Pion structure from twisted mass lattice QCD down to the physical pion mass

We present an investigation of pion structure based on ETMC $N_f=2$ and $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass configurations at maximal twist. We compute the first moment of the quark momentum fraction of the pion, $\langle x \rangle$ and the electromagnetic form factor, $F_π(Q^2)$. For the latter, momentum is injected using twisted boundary conditions and the calculation is carried out directly at the physical pion mass. We find that our data are consistent with vector meson dominance and experimental data in the region of small momentum transfer. For $\langle x \rangle$, we find that our chirally and continuum extrapolated result is compatible with its phenomenological value.

A Mixed Action Analysis of $η$ and $η'$ Mesons

We study $η$ and $η'$ mesons and their mixing angle in a mixed action approach with so-called Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on a Wilson twisted mass sea. The gauge configurations have been generated by ETMC for $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical quark flavours and for three values of the lattice spacing. The main results are that differences in between the mixed action and the unitary approach vanish towards the continuum limit with the expected rate of $\mathcal{O}(a^2)$. The individual size of the lattice artifacts depends, however, strongly on the observable used to match unitary and valence actions. Moreover, we show that for the $η$ mass valence and valence plus sea quark mass dependence differ significantly. Hence, in this case a re-tuning of the simulation parameters in the valence sector only is not sufficient to compensate for mismatches in the original quark masses.

Non-perturbative Test of the Witten-Veneziano Formula from Lattice QCD

We compute both sides of the Witten-Veneziano formula using lattice techniques. For the one side we perform dedicated quenched simulations and use the spectral projector method to determine the topological susceptibility in the pure Yang-Mills theory. The other side we determine in lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical Wilson twisted mass fermions including for the first time also the flavour singlet decay constant. The Witten-Veneziano formula represents a leading order expression in the framework of chiral perturbation theory and we also employ leading order chiral perturbation theory to relate the flavor singlet decay constant to the relevant decay constant parameters in the quark flavor basis and flavor non-singlet decay constants. After taking the continuum and the SU$(2)$ chiral limits we compare both sides and find good agreement within uncertainties.

Testing the Witten-Veneziano Formula on the Lattice

In this proceeding contribution we report on a test of the famous Witten-Veneziano formula using lattice techniques. We perform dedicated quenched simulations and apply the spectral projector method to determine the topological susceptibility in pure Yang-Mills theory. In order to compute the relevant meson masses and the flavor singlet decay constant we employ lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical Wilson twisted mass fermions. Taking the continuum and the $SU(2)$ chiral limits we find good agreement within uncertainties for both sides of the formula.

Comparison of different lattice definitions of the topological charge

We present a comparison of different definitions of the topological charge on the lattice, using a small-volume ensemble with 2 flavours of dynamical twisted mass fermions. The investigated definitions are: index of the overlap Dirac operator, spectral projectors, spectral flow of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator and field theoretic with different kinds of smoothing of gauge fields (HYP and APE smearings, gradient flow, cooling). We also show some results on the topological susceptibility.

Pi-Pi Scattering with Nf=2+1+1 Twisted Mass Fermions

Pi-Pi scattering is investigated for the first time for Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours using Wilson twisted mass fermions. Lüscher's finite size method is used to relate energy shifts in finite volume to scattering quantities like the scattering length in the I=2 channel. The computation is performed at several pion masses and lattice spacings utilising the stochastic LapH method.

Investigating a mixed action approach for η and η' mesons in Nf=2+1+1 lattice QCD

We present results for a test of a mixed action approach with Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on a Wilson twisted mass sea for the example η, η' mesons. Flavour singlet pseudoscalar mesons obtain significant contributions from disconnected diagrams and are, therefore, expected to be particularly sensitive to mixed regularisations. We employ different procedures for matching valence and sea quark actions and show that the results agree in the continuum limit.

Properties of pseudoscalar flavour-singlet mesons from 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We study properties of pseudoscalar flavour-singlet mesons from Wilson twisted mass lattice QCD with Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavors. Results for masses are presented at three values of the lattice spacing and light quark masses corresponding to values of the pion mass from 230 MeV to 500 MeV. We briefly discuss scaling effects and the light and strange quark mass dependence of the eta mass. In addition we present an exploratory study using Osterwalder-Seiler type strange and charm valence quarks. This approach avoids some of the complications of the twisted mass heavy doublet. We present first results for matching valence and unitary actions and a comparison of statistical uncertainties.

Scalar mesons and tetraquarks from twisted mass lattice QCD

We study light scalar mesons with particular focus on the a_0(980) using lattice QCD with 2+1+1 dynamical quark flavors. To investigate the structure of these scalar mesons and to identify, whether a sizeable tetraquark component is present, we use a large set of operators, including diquark-antidiquark, mesonic molecule and two-meson operators. We find that the low-lying states overlap essentially exclusively with two-meson states. This indicates that in the channels investigated no tightly bound four-quark states of either molecular or diquark-antidiquark type exist.

Testing the stochastic LapH method in the twisted mass formulation

We present first results using the stochastic Laplace-Heaviside (sLapH) method in the twisted mass formulation. The calculations are performed on gauge configurations provided by the European Twisted Mass (ETM) collaboration with 2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours at a single value of the lattice spacing. In particular, we compute disconnected contributions to flavour singlet pseudo-scalar mesons and compare sLapH to standard volume noise methods.

η and η' masses and decay constants from lattice QCD with 2+1+1 quark flavours

We investigate the masses and decay constants of eta and eta' mesons using the Wilson twisted mass formulation with N_f=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours based on gauge configurations of ETMC. We show how to efficiently subtract excited state contributions to the relevant correlation functions and estimate in particular the eta' mass with improved precision. After investigating the strange quark mass dependence and the continuum and chiral extrapolations, we present our results for masses and mixing angle(s) at the physical point. Using chiral perturbation theory we also extract the decay constants f_l and f_s and use them to estimate the decay widths of eta,η' to gamma gamma and the transition form factor in the limit of large momentum transfer.

η and η' mixing from Lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD computation of $η$ and $η^\prime$ masses and mixing angles, for the first time controlling continuum and quark mass extrapolations. The results for the eta mass 551(8)(6) MeV (first error statistical, second systematic) and the eta' mass 1006(54)(38)(+61) MeV (third error from our method) are in excellent agreement with experiment. Our data show that the mixing in the quark flavour basis can be described by a single mixing angle of 46(1)(3) degree indicating that the eta' is mainly a flavour singlet state.

Exploratory investigation of nucleon-nucleon interactions using Euclidean Monte Carlo simulations

We present an exploratory study of chiral effective theories of nuclei with methods adopted from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We show that the simulations in the Euclidean path integral approach are feasible and that we can determine the energy of the two nucleon state. This opens up the possibility to determine in future simulations nucleon phase shifts by varying the parameters and the simulated volumes. The physical cut-off of the theory is realised by blocking of the lattice fields. By keeping the block size fixed in physical units the lattice cut-off (i.e. the lattice spacing) can be freely changed. This offers an effective way for controlling lattice artefacts.

Lattice investigation of the tetraquark candidates a0(980) and kappa

It is a long discussed issue whether light scalar mesons have sizeable four-quark components. We present an exploratory study of this question using N_f=2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD. A mixed action approach ignoring disconnected contributions is used to calculate correlator matrices consisting of mesonic molecule, diquark-antidiquark and two-meson interpolating operators with quantum numbers of the scalar mesons a0(980) (1(0^++)) and kappa (1/2(0+)). The correlation matrices are analyzed by solving the generalized eigenvalue problem. The theoretically expected free two-particle scattering states are identified, while no additional low lying states are observed. We do not observe indications for bound four-quark states in the channels investigated.

Quark mass and chiral condensate from the Wilson twisted mass lattice quark propagator

In this work, we report about the determination of nonperturbative OPE parameters from fits of continuum perturbation theory to the Landau gauge quark propagator. The propagators are computed numerically using lattice QCD with Nf=2 dynamical Wilson twisted mass fermions. We use four different values of the lattice spacing ranging from about 0.1 fm to about 0.05 fm as well as several quark masses per lattice spacing. This allows us to obtain continuum results for the chiral condensate and the average up/down quark mass. The main results are the average up/down quark mass m_q = 3.0(4)(2) MeV at the physical point and a value of the chiral condensate of -(299(26)(29) MeV)^3 in the chiral limit, both in the MSbar scheme at 2 GeV. We have also studied nonperturbative contaminations of our results at small values of the momenta, which are often interpreted as the contribution of the gluon condensate A^2. We do see contributions from such terms, which are, however, not stable over the order in perturbation theory.

Scalar mesons and tetraquarks by means of lattice QCD

We study the light scalar mesons a_0(980) and kappa using N_f = 2+1+1 flavor lattice QCD. In order to probe the internal structure of these scalar mesons, and in particular to identify, whether a sizeable tetraquark component is present, we use a large set of operators, including diquark-antidiquark, mesonic molecule and two-meson operators. The inclusion of disconnected diagrams, which are technically rather challenging, but which would allow us to extend our work to e.g. the f_0(980) meson, is introduced and discussed.

Charm Current-Current Correlators in Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

The current correlator method has been shown to be a practical tool to extract the charm quark mass and strong coupling constant from Lattice QCD data as an alternative to the sum rule approach using experimental electron-positron annihilation cross section data. We report on the progress of an investigation of charm current-current correlators in N_f=2 Twisted Mass Lattice QCD. Upon determining the temporal moments of the current correlators we compare to the low-energy expansion of the moments in perturbative QCD and calculate the charm quark mass and strong coupling constant and in case of the vector current correlator directly compare both methods.

Eta and eta' meson masses from Nf=2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We determine mass and flavour content of eta and eta' states using Nf=2+1+1 Wilson twisted mass lattice QCD. We describe how those flavour singlet states need to be treated in this lattice formulation. Results are presented for two values of the lattice spacing, a~0.08 fm and a~0.09 fm, with a range of light quark masses corresponding to values of the pion mass from 270 to 500 MeV and fixed bare strange and charm quark mass values.

Comparing topological charge definitions using topology fixing actions

We investigate both the hyperbolic action and the determinant ratio action designed to fix the topological charge on the lattice. We show to what extent topology is fixed depending on the parameters of these actions, keeping the physical situation fixed. At the same time the agreement between different definitions of topological charge - the field theoretic and the index definition - is directly correlated to the degree topology is fixed. Moreover, it turns out that the two definitions agree very well. We also study finite volume effects arising in the static potential and related quantities due to topology fixing.

Computing K and D meson masses with N_f = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We discuss the computation of the mass of the K and D mesons within the framework of N_f = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD from a technical point of view. These quantities are essential, already at the level of generating gauge configurations, being obvious candidates to tune the strange and charm quark masses to their physical values. In particular, we address the problems related to the twisted mass flavor and parity symmetry breaking, which arise when considering a non-degenerate (c,s) doublet. We propose and verify the consistency of three methods to extract the K and D meson masses in this framework.

Light hadrons from lattice QCD with light (u,d), strange and charm dynamical quarks

We present results of lattice QCD simulations with mass-degenerate up and down and mass-split strange and charm (N_f = 2+1+1) dynamical quarks using Wilson twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. The tuning of the strange and charm quark masses is performed at two values of the lattice spacing a~0.078 fm and a~0.086 fm with lattice sizes ranging from L~1.9 fm to L~2.8 fm. We measure with high statistical precision the light pseudoscalar mass m_PS and decay constant f_PS in a range 270 < m_PS < 510 MeV and determine the low energy parameters f_0, l_3 and l_4 of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory. We use the two values of the lattice spacing, several lattice sizes as well as different values of the light, strange and charm quark masses to explore the systematic effects. A first study of discretisation effects in light-quark observables and a comparison to N_f=2 results are performed.

Pseudoscalar decay constants from N_f=2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We present first results for the pseudoscalar decay constants $f_K$, $f_D$ and $f_{D_s}$ from lattice QCD with N_f=2+1+1 flavours of dynamical quarks. The lattice simulations have been performed by the European Twisted Mass collaboration (ETMC) using maximally twisted mass quarks. For the pseudoscalar decay constants we follow a mixed action approach by using so called Osterwalder-Seiler fermions in the valence sector for strange and charm quarks. The data for two values of the lattice spacing and several values of the up/down quark mass is analysed using chiral perturbation theory.
