A Dichotomy for Inverse-Semigroup Crossed Products via Dynamical Cuntz Semigroups

We characterise stable finiteness and pure infiniteness of the essential crossed product of a C*-algebra by an action of an inverse semigroup. Under additional assumptions, we prove a stably finite / purely infinite dichotomy. Our main technique is the development, using an induced action, of a ''dynamical Cuntz semigroup'' that is a subquotient of the usual Cuntz semigroup. We prove that the essential crossed product is stably finite / purely infinite if and only if the dynamical Cuntz semigroup admits / does not admit a nontrivial state. Indeed, a retract of our dynamical Cuntz semigroup suffices to prove the dichotomy. Our results generalise those by Rainone on crossed products of groups acting by automorphisms of a C*-algebra, and we recover results by Kwaśniewski--Meyer--Prasad on C*-algebras of non-Hausdorff groupoids.

Filtering germs: Groupoids associated to inverse semigroups

We investigate various groupoids associated to an arbitrary inverse semigroup with zero. We show that the groupoid of filters with respect to the natural partial order is isomorphic to the groupoid of germs arising from the standard action of the inverse semigroup on the space of idempotent filters. We also investigate the restriction of this isomorphism to the groupoid of tight filters and to the groupoid of ultrafilters.

Dense subalgebras of purely infinite simple groupoid C*-algebras

A simple Steinberg algebra associated to an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ is algebraically purely infinite if and only if the characteristic functions of compact open subsets of the unit space are infinite idempotents. If a simple Steinberg algebra is algebraically purely infinite, then the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ is simple and purely infinite. But the Steinberg algebra seems to small for the converse to hold. For this purpose we introduce an intermediate $*$-algebra $B(G)$ constructed using corners $1_U C^*_r(G) 1_U$ for all compact open subsets $U$ of the unit space of the groupoid. We then show that if $G$ is minimal and effective, then $B(G)$ is algebraically properly infinite if and only if $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple. We apply our results to the algebras of higher-rank graphs.

AF-embeddability of $2$-graph algebras and quasidiagonality of $k$-graph algebras

We characterise quasidiagonality of the $C^*$-algebra of a cofinal $k$-graph in terms of an algebraic condition involving the coordinate matrices of the graph. This result covers all simple $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. In the special case of cofinal $2$-graphs we further prove that AF-embeddability, quasidiagonality and stable finiteness of the $2$-graph algebra are all equivalent.

Equilibrium states on graph algebras

We consider operator-algebraic dynamical systems given by actions of the real line on unital $C^*$-algebras, and especially the equilibrium states (or KMS states) of such systems. We are particularly interested in systems built from the gauge action on the Toeplitz algebra and graph algebra of a finite directed graph, and we describe a complete classification of the KMS states obtained in joint work with Laca and Sims. We then discuss applications of these results to Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated to local homeomorphisms, obtained in collaboration with Afsar. Thomsen has given bounds on the range of inverse temperatures at which KMS states may exist. We show that Thomsen's bounds are sharp.

Ideals of Steinberg algebras of strongly effective groupoids, with applications to Leavitt path algebras

We consider the ideal structure of Steinberg algebras over a commutative ring with identity. We focus on Hausdorff groupoids that are strongly effective in the sense that their reductions to closed subspaces of their unit spaces are all effective. For such a groupoid, we completely describe the ideal lattice of the associated Steinberg algebra over any commutative ring with identity. Our results are new even for the special case of Leavitt path algebras; so we describe explicitly what they say in this context, and give two concrete examples.

KMS states on the operator algebras of reducible higher-rank graphs

We study the equilibrium or KMS states of the Toeplitz C*-algebra of a finite higher-rank graph which is reducible. The Toeplitz algebra carries a gauge action of a higher-dimensional torus, and a dynamics arises by choosing an embedding of the real numbers in the torus. Here we use an embedding which leads to a dynamics which has previously been identified as "preferred", and we scale the dynamics so that 1 is a critical inverse temperature. As with 1-graphs, we study the strongly connected components of the vertices of the graph. The behaviour of the KMS states depends on both the graphical relationships between the components and the relative size of the spectral radii of the vertex matrices of the components. We test our theorems on graphs with two connected components. We find that our techniques give a complete analysis of the KMS states with inverse temperatures down to a second critical temperature beta_c<1.

Phase transitions on the Toeplitz algebras of Baumslag-Solitar semigroups

Spielberg has recently shown that Baumslag-Solitar groups associated to pairs of positive integers are quasi-lattice ordered in the sense of Nica. Thus they have tractable Toeplitz algebras. Each of these algebras carries a natural dynamics. Here we construct the equilibrium states (the KMS states) for these dynamics. For inverse temperatures larger than a critical value, there is a large simplex of KMS states parametrised by probability measures on the unit circle. At the critical value, and under a mild hypothesis, there is a phase transition in which this simplex collapses to a singleton. There is a further phase transition at infinity, in the sense that there are many ground states which cannot be realised as limits of KMS states with finite inverse temperatures.

The C*-algebras of compact transformation groups

We investigate the representation theory of the crossed-product C*-algebra associated to a compact group G acting on a locally compact space X when the stability subgroups vary discontinuously. Our main result applies when G has a principal stability subgroup or X is locally of finite G-orbit type. Then the upper multiplicity of the representation of the crossed product induced from an irreducible representation V of a stability subgroup is obtained by restricting V to a certain closed subgroup of the stability subgroup and taking the maximum of the multiplicities of the irreducible summands occurring in the restriction of V. As a corollary we obtain that when the trivial subgroup is a principal stability subgroup, the crossed product is a Fell algebra if and only if every stability subgroup is abelian. A second corollary is that the C*-algebra of the classical motion group R^n\rtimes \SO(n) is a Fell algebra. This uses the branching theorem for the special orthogonal group \SO(n) with respect to \SO(n-1).

KMS states on C*-algebras associated to local homeomorphisms

For every Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra, there are natural gauge actions of the circle on the associated Toeplitz algebra and Cuntz-Pimsner algebra, and hence natural dynamics obtained by lifting these gauge actions to actions of the real line. We study the KMS states of these dynamics for a family of bimodules associated to local homeomorphisms on compact spaces. For inverse temperatures larger than a certain critical value, we find a large simplex of KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra, and we show that all KMS states on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra have inverse temperature at most this critical value. We illustrate our results by considering the backward shift on the one-sided path space of a finite graph, where we can use recent results about KMS states on graph algebras to see what happens below the critical value. Our results about KMS states on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of the shift show that recent constraints on the range of inverse temperatures obtained by Thomsen are sharp.

KMS states on the C*-algebra of a higher-rank graph and periodicity in the path space

We study the KMS states of the C*-algebra of a strongly connected finite k-graph. We find that there is only one 1-parameter subgroup of the gauge action that can admit a KMS state. The extreme KMS states for this preferred dynamics are parameterised by the characters of an abelian group that captures the periodicity in the infinite-path space of the graph. We deduce that there is a unique KMS state if and only if the k-graph C*-algebra is simple, giving a complete answer to a question of Yang. When the k-graph C*-algebra is not simple, our results reveal a phase change of an unexpected nature in its Toeplitz extension.

KMS states on the C*-algebras of reducible graphs

We consider the dynamics on the C*-algebras of finite graphs obtained by lifting the gauge action to an action of the real line. Enomoto, Fujii and Watatani proved that if the vertex matrix of the graph is irreducible, then the dynamics on the graph algebra admits a single KMS state. We have previously studied the dynamics on the Toeplitz algebra, and explicitly described a finite-dimensional simplex of KMS states for inverse temperatures above a critical value. Here we study the KMS states for graphs with reducible vertex matrix, and for inverse temperatures at and below the critical value. We prove a general result which describes all the KMS states at a fixed inverse temperature, and then apply this theorem to a variety of examples. We find that there can be many patterns of phase transition, depending on the behaviour of paths in the underlying graph.

Spatial realisations of KMS states on the C*-algebras of higher-rank graphs

Several authors have recently been studying the equilibrium or KMS states on the Toeplitz algebras of finite higher-rank graphs. For graphs of rank one (that is, for ordinary directed graphs), there is a natural dynamics obtained by lifting the gauge action of the circle to an action of the real line. The algebras of higher-rank graphs carry a gauge action of a higher-dimensional torus, and there are many potential dynamics arising from different embeddings of the real line in the torus. Previous results show that there is nonetheless a "preferred dynamics" for which the system exhibits a particularly satisfactory phase transition, and that the unique KMS state at the critical inverse temperature can then be implemented by intregrating vector states against a measure on the infinite path space of the graph. Here we obtain a similar description of the KMS state at the critical inverse temperature for other dynamics. Our spatial implementation is given by integrating against a measure on a space of paths which are infinite in some directions but finite in others. Our results are sharpest for the algebras of rank-two graphs.

Kumjian-Pask algebras of locally convex higher-rank graphs

The Kumjian-Pask algebra of a higher-rank graph generalises the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph. We extend the definition of Kumjian-Pask algebra to row-finite higher-rank graphs $Λ$ with sources which satisfy a local-convexity condition. After proving versions of the graded-uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem, we study the Kumjian-Pask algebra of rank-2 Bratteli diagrams by studying certain finite subgraphs which are locally convex. We show that the desourcification procedure of Farthing and Webster yields a row-finite higher-rank graph $\tildeΛ$ without sources such that the Kumjian-Pask algebras of $\tildeΛ$ and $Λ$ are Morita equivalent. We then use the Morita equivalence to study the ideal structure of the Kumjian-Pask algebra of $Λ$ by pulling the appropriate results across the equivalence.

KMS states on $C^*$-algebras associated to higher-rank graphs

Consider a higher-rank graph of rank k. Both the Cuntz-Krieger algebra and the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra of the graph carry natural gauge actions of the torus T^k, and restricting these gauge actions to one-parameter subgroups of T^k gives dynamical systems involving actions of the real line. We study the KMS states of these dynamical systems. We find that for large inverse temperatures β, the simplex of KMS_βstates on the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra has dimension d one less than the number of vertices in the graph. We also show that there is a preferred dynamics for which there is a critical inverse temperature β_c: for βlarger than β_c, there is a d-dimensional simplex of KMS states; when β=β_c and the one-parameter subgroup is dense, there is a unique KMS state, and this state factors through the Cuntz-Krieger algebra. As in previous studies for k=1, our main tool is the Perron-Frobenius theory for irreducible nonnegative matrices, though here we need a version of the theory for commuting families of matrices.

KMS states on the C*-algebras of finite graphs

We consider a finite directed graph E, and the gauge action on its Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra, viewed as an action of R. For inverse temperatures larger than a critical value β_c, we give an explicit construction of all the KMS_β states. If the graph is strongly connected, then there is a unique KMS_{β_c} state, and this state factors through the quotient map onto the C*-algebra C*(E) of the graph. Our approach is direct and relatively elementary.

The equivalence relations of local homeomorphisms and Fell algebras

We study the groupoid C*-algebras associated to the equivalence relation induced by a quotient map on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This C*-algebra is always a Fell algebra, and if the quotient space is Hausdorff, it is a continuous-trace algebra. We show that the C*-algebra of a locally compact, Hausdorff and principal groupoid is a Fell algebra if and only if the groupoid is one of these relations, extending a theorem of Archbold and Somerset about etale groupoids. The C*-algebras of these relations are, up to Morita equivalence, precisely the Fell algebras with trivial Dixmier-Douady invariant as recently defined by an Huef, Kumjian and Sims. We use twisted groupoid algebras to provide examples of Fell algebras with non-trivial Dixmier-Douady invariant.

The representation theory of C*-algebras associated to groupoids

Let E be a second-countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid equipped with an action of T such that G:=E/T is a principal groupoid with Haar system λ. The twisted groupoid C*-algebra C*(E;G,λ) is a quotient of the C*-algebra of E obtained by completing the space of T-equivariant functions on E. We show that C*(E;G,λ) is postliminal if and only if the orbit space of G is T_0 and that C*(E;G, λ) is liminal if and only if the orbit space is T_1. We also show that C*(E;G, λ) has bounded trace if and only if G is integrable and that C*(E;G, λ) is a Fell algebra if and only if G is Cartan. Let \G be a second-countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid with Haar system λand continuously varying, abelian isotropy groups. Let A be the isotropy groupoid and R := \G/A. Using the results about twisted groupoid C*-algebras, we show that the C*-algebra C*(\G, λ) has bounded trace if and only if R is integrable and that C*(\G, λ) is a Fell algebra if and only if R is Cartan. We illustrate our theorems with examples of groupoids associated to directed graphs.

The socle and semisimplicity of a Kumjian-Pask algebra

The Kumjian-Pask algebra KP(Λ) is a graded algebra associated to a higher-rank graph Λand is a generalization of the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph. We analyze the minimal left-ideals of KP(Λ), and identify its socle as a graded ideal by describing its generators in terms of a subset of vertices of the graph. We characterize when KP(Λ) is semisimple, and obtain a complete structure theorem for a semisimple Kumjian-Pask algebra.

A Dixmier-Douady classification for Fell algebras

We generalise the Dixmier-Douady classification of continuous-trace C*-algebras to Fell algebras. To do so, we show that C*-diagonals in Fell algebras are precisely abelian subalgebras with the extension property, and use this to prove that every Fell algebra is Morita equivalent to one containing a diagonal subalgebra. We then use the machinery of twisted groupoid C*-algebras and equivariant sheaf cohomology to define the Dixmier-Douady invariant of a Fell algebra A, and to prove our classification theorem.

Exel and Stacey crossed products, and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras

There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product (though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra), that every Stacey crossed product is an Exel crossed product, and answer some questions raised by Ionescu and Muhly. While this manuscript is not yet in its final form(s) several people have already used our results, so we are posting it now.

Naturality of Symmetric Imprimitivity Theorems

The first imprimitivity theorems identified the representations of groups or dynamical systems which are induced from representations of a subgroup. Symmetric imprimitivity theorems identify pairs of crossed products by different groups which are Morita equivalent, and hence have the same representation theory. Here we consider commuting actions of groups $H$ and $K$ on a $C^*$-algebra which are saturated and proper as defined by Rieffel in 1990. Our main result says that the resulting Morita equivalence of crossed products is natural in the sense that it is compatible with homomorphisms and induction processes.

Stacey crossed products associated to Exel systems

There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product, though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra. We apply this result to a variety of Exel systems, including those associated to shifts on the path spaces of directed graphs.

Strength of convergence in non-free transformation groups

Let (G, X) be a transformation group where the group $G$ does not necessarily act freely on the space X. We investigate the extent to which the action of G may fail to be proper. Stability subgroups are used to define new notions of strength of convergence in the orbit space and of measure accumulation along orbits. By using the representation theory of the associated crossed product C^*-algebra, we show that these notions are equivalent under certain conditions.

Boundary quotients of the Toeplitz algebra of the affine semigroup over the natural numbers

We study the Toeplitz algebra $\TT(\N\rtimes\N^\times)$ and three quotients of this algebra: the $C^*$-algebra $\qn$ recntly introduced by Cuntz, and two new ones, which we call the additive and multiplicative boundary quotients. These quotients are universal for Nica-covariant representations of $\N\rtimes\N^\times$ satisfying extra relations, and can be realised as partial crossed products. We use the structure theory for partial crossed products to prove a uniqueness theorem for the additive boundary quotient, and use the recent analysis of KMS states on $\TT(\nxnx)$ to describe the KMS states on the two quotients. We then show that $\TT(\nxnx)$, $\qn$ and our new quotients are all interesting new examples for Larsen's theory of Exel crossed products by semigroups.

Full and reduced coactions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras

We survey the results required to pass between full and reduced coactions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras, which say, roughly speaking, that one can always do so without changing the crossed-product C*-algebra. Wherever possible we use definitions and constructions that are well-documented and accessible to non-experts, and otherwise we provide full details. We then give a series of applications to illustrate the use of these techniques. We obtain in particular a new version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for full coactions, and prove that it gives a natural isomorphism between crossed-product functors defined on appropriate categories.

Purely infinite simple C*-algebras associated to integer dilation matrices

Given an n x n integer matrix A whose eigenvalues are strictly greater than 1 in absolute value, let σ_A be the transformation of the n-torus T^n=R^n/Z^n defined by σ_A(e^{2πix})=e^{2πiAx} for x\in R^n. We study the associated crossed-product C*-algebra, which is defined using a certain transfer operator for σ_A, proving it to be simple and purely infinite and computing its K-theory groups.

Strength of convergence in the orbit space of a groupoid

Let G be a second-countable locally-compact Hausdorff groupoid with a Haar system, and let {x_n} be a sequence in the unit space of G. We show that the notions of strength of convergence of {x_n} in the orbit space and measure-theoretic accumulation along the orbits are equivalent ways of realising multiplicity numbers associated to a sequence of induced representation of the groupoid C*-algebra.

Strength of convergence and multiplicities in the spectrum of a C*-dynamical system

We consider separable $C^*$-dynamical systems $(A,G,α)$ for which the induced action of the group $G$ on the spectrum $\hat A$ of the $C^*$-algebra $A$ is free. We study how the representation theory of the associated crossed-product $C^*$-algebra $A\rtimes_αG$ depends on the representation theory of $A$ and the properties of the action of $G$ on $\hat A$. Our main tools involve computations of upper and lower bounds on multiplicity numbers associated to irreducible representations of $A\rtimes_αG$. We apply our techniques to give necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of $A$ and the action of $G$ on $\hat A$, for $A\rtimes_αG$ to be (i) a continuous-trace $C^*$-algebra, (ii) a Fell $C^*$-algebra and (iii) a bounded-trace $C^*$-algebra. When $G$ is amenable, we also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the crossed-product $C^*$-algebra $A\rtimes_αG$ to be (iv) a liminal $C^*$-algebra and (v) a Type I $C^*$-algebra. The results in (i), (iii)--(v) extend some earlier special cases in which $A$ was assumed to have the corresponding property.
