Awaking Spatial Intelligence in Unified Multimodal Understanding and Generation

We present JoyAI-Image, a unified multimodal foundation model for visual understanding, text-to-image generation, and instruction-guided image editing. JoyAI-Image couples a spatially enhanced Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) with a Multimodal Diffusion Transformer (MMDiT), allowing perception and generation to interact through a shared multimodal interface. Around this architecture, we build a scalable training recipe that combines unified instruction tuning, long-text rendering supervision, spatially grounded data, and both general and spatial editing signals. This design gives the model broad multimodal capability while strengthening geometry-aware reasoning and controllable visual synthesis. Experiments across understanding, generation, long-text rendering, and editing benchmarks show that JoyAI-Image achieves state-of-the-art or highly competitive performance. More importantly, the bidirectional loop between enhanced understanding, controllable spatial editing, and novel-view-assisted reasoning enables the model to move beyond general visual competence toward stronger spatial intelligence. These results suggest a promising path for unified visual models in downstream applications such as vision-language-action systems and world models.

Dynamic Grained Encoder for Vision Transformers

Transformers, the de-facto standard for language modeling, have been recently applied for vision tasks. This paper introduces sparse queries for vision transformers to exploit the intrinsic spatial redundancy of natural images and save computational costs. Specifically, we propose a Dynamic Grained Encoder for vision transformers, which can adaptively assign a suitable number of queries to each spatial region. Thus it achieves a fine-grained representation in discriminative regions while keeping high efficiency. Besides, the dynamic grained encoder is compatible with most vision transformer frameworks. Without bells and whistles, our encoder allows the state-of-the-art vision transformers to reduce computational complexity by 40%-60% while maintaining comparable performance on image classification. Extensive experiments on object detection and segmentation further demonstrate the generalizability of our approach. Code is available at https://github.com/StevenGrove/vtpack.

Simplified Analysis on Filtering Sensitivity Trade-offs in Continuous- and Discrete-Time Systems

A simplified analysis is performed on the Bode-type filtering sensitivity trade-off integrals, which capture the sensitivity characteristics of the estimate and estimation error with respect to the process input and estimated signal in continuous- and discrete-time linear time-invariant filtering systems. Compared with the previous analyses based on complex analysis and Cauchy's residue theorem, the analysis results derived from the simplified method are more explicit, thorough, and require less restrictive assumptions. For continuous-time filtering systems, our simplified analysis reveals that apart from the non-minimum phase zero sets reported in the previous literature, the value and boundedness of filtering sensitivity integrals are also determined by the leading coefficients, relative degrees, minimum phase zeros, and poles of plants and filters. By invoking the simplified method, a comprehensive analysis on the discrete-time filtering sensitivity integrals is conducted for the first time. Numerical examples are provided to verify the validity and correctness of the simplified analysis.

Learning Dynamic Routing for Semantic Segmentation

Recently, numerous handcrafted and searched networks have been applied for semantic segmentation. However, previous works intend to handle inputs with various scales in pre-defined static architectures, such as FCN, U-Net, and DeepLab series. This paper studies a conceptually new method to alleviate the scale variance in semantic representation, named dynamic routing. The proposed framework generates data-dependent routes, adapting to the scale distribution of each image. To this end, a differentiable gating function, called soft conditional gate, is proposed to select scale transform paths on the fly. In addition, the computational cost can be further reduced in an end-to-end manner by giving budget constraints to the gating function. We further relax the network level routing space to support multi-path propagations and skip-connections in each forward, bringing substantial network capacity. To demonstrate the superiority of the dynamic property, we compare with several static architectures, which can be modeled as special cases in the routing space. Extensive experiments are conducted on Cityscapes and PASCAL VOC 2012 to illustrate the effectiveness of the dynamic framework. Code is available at https://github.com/yanwei-li/DynamicRouting.

Adaptation is Useless for Two Discrete Additive-Noise Two-Way Channels

In two-way channels, each user transmits and receives at the same time. This allows each encoder to interactively adapt the current input to its own message and all previously received signals. Such coding approach can introduce correlation between inputs of different users, since all the users' outputs are correlated by the nature of the channel. However, for some channels, such adaptation in the coding scheme and its induced correlation among users are useless in the sense that they do not help enlarge the capacity region with respect to the standard coding method (where each user encodes only based on its own message). In this paper, it is shown that adaptation is not helpful for enlarging the capacity region of two classes of two-way discrete channels: the modulo additive-noise channel with memory and the multiple access/degraded broadcast channel.

Broadcasting Correlated Vector Gaussians

The problem of sending two correlated vector Gaussian sources over a bandwidth-matched two-user scalar Gaussian broadcast channel is studied in this work, where each receiver wishes to reconstruct its target source under a covariance distortion constraint. We derive a lower bound on the optimal tradeoff between the transmit power and the achievable reconstruction distortion pair. Our derivation is based on a new bounding technique which involves the introduction of appropriate remote sources. Furthermore, it is shown that this lower bound is achievable by a class of hybrid schemes for the special case where the weak receiver wishes to reconstruct a scalar source under the mean squared error distortion constraint.

Status of polarization control experiment at Shanghai deep ultraviolet free electron laser

A polarization control experiment by utilizing a pair of crossed undulators has been proposed for the Shanghai deep ultraviolet free electron laser test facility. Numerical simulations indicate that, with the electromagnetic phase-shifter located between the two crossed planar undulators, fully coherent radiation with 100 nJ order pulse energy, 5 picoseconds pulse length and circular polarization degree above 90% could be generated. The physical design study and the preparation status of the experiment are presented in the paper.
