Design and testing of an sTGC ASIC interface board for the ATLAS New Small Wheel upgrade

The ATLAS experiment will replace the present Small Wheel (SW) detector with a New Small Wheel detector (NSW) aiming to improve the performance of muon triggering and precision tracking in the endcap region at the High-Luminosity LHC. Small-strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC) is one of the two new detector technologies used in this upgrade. A few custom-designed ASICs are needed for the sTGC detector. We designed an sTGC ASIC interface board to test ASIC-to-ASIC communication and validate the functionality of the entire system. A test platform with the final readout system is set up and the whole sTGC readout chain is demonstrated for the first time. Key parameters in the readout chain are discussed and the results are shown.

Intelligent Task Offloading for Heterogeneous V2X Communications

With the rapid development of autonomous driving technologies, it becomes difficult to reconcile the conflict between ever-increasing demands for high process rate in the intelligent automotive tasks and resource-constrained on-board processors. Fortunately, vehicular edge computing (VEC) has been proposed to meet the pressing resource demands. Due to the delay-sensitive traits of automotive tasks, only a heterogeneous vehicular network with multiple access technologies may be able to handle these demanding challenges. In this paper, we propose an intelligent task offloading framework in heterogeneous vehicular networks with three Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technologies, namely Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), cellular-based V2X (C-V2X) communication, and millimeter wave (mmWave) communication. Based on stochastic network calculus, this paper firstly derives the delay upper bound of different offloading technologies with a certain failure probability. Moreover, we propose a federated Q-learning method that optimally utilizes the available resources to minimize the communication/computing budgets and the offloading failure probabilities. Simulation results indicate that our proposed algorithm can significantly outperform the existing algorithms in terms of offloading failure probability and resource cost.

Characterization of a Serializer ASIC chip for the upgrade of the ATLAS muon detector

We report on the design of a serializer ASIC to be used in the ATLAS forward muon detector for trigger data transmission. We discuss the performance of a prototype chip covering power dissipation, latency and stable operating line rate. Tests show that the serializer is capable of running at least at 5.76 Gbps with a bit error ratio below 1x10^{-15}, and a power consumption of 200 mW running at 4.8 Gbps. The latency between the start of loading 30 bits into the serializer to the transmission of the first bit from the serializer is measured to be about 6 ns.

Quasi-periodic solutions of the Heisenberg hierarchy

The Heisenberg hierarchy and its Hamiltonian structure are derived respectively by virtue of the zero curvature equation and the trace identity. With the help of the Lax matrix we introduce an algebraic curve $\mathcal{K}_{n}$ of arithmetic genus $n$, from which we define meromorphic function $ϕ$ and straighten out all of the flows associated with the Heisenberg hierarchy under the Abel-Jacobi coordinates. Finally, we achieve the explicit theta function representations of solutions for the whole Heisenberg hierarchy as a result of the asymptotic properties of $ϕ$.

Detection of Alpha Particles and Low Energy Gamma Rays by Thermo-Bonded Micromegas in Xenon Gas

Micromegas is a type of micro-pattern gaseous detector currently under R&D for applications in rare event search experiments. Here we report the performance of a Micromegas structure constructed with a micromesh thermo-bonded to a readout plane, motivated by its potential application in two-phase xenon detectors for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. The study is carried out in pure xenon at room temperature. Measurements with alpha particles from the Americium-241 source showed that gas gains larger than 200 can be obtained at xenon pressure up to 3 atm. Gamma rays down to 8 keV were observed with such a device.
