The limit points of the strong law of large numbers under the sub-linear expectations

Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables in a regular sub-linear expectation space $(Ω,\mathscr{H},\widehat{\mathbb E})$ with the finite Choquet expectation, upper mean $\overlineμ $ and lower mean $\underlineμ $. Then for any Borel-measurable function $φ(x_1,\ldots,x_d)$ on $\mathbb R^d$ or continuous function $φ(x_1,x_2,\ldots)$ on $\mathbb R^{\mathbb N}$, $\sum_{i=1}^n X_i/n$ converges to $\underlineμ\wedge φ(X_1,X_2,\ldots)\wedge \overlineμ$ with upper capacity $1$. The limits of $\sum_{i=1}^nX_i/n$ can be with upper capacity 1 also a random set with boundaries being continuous functions or finite-dimensional Borel-measurable functions of $(X_1, X_2,\ldots)$.

Convergence of randomized urn models with irreducible and reducible replacement policy

Generalized Friedman urn is one of the simplest and most useful models considered in probability theory. Since Athreya and Ney (1972) showed the almost sure convergence of urn proportions in a randomized urn model with irreducible replacement matrix under the $L\log L$ moment assumption, this assumption has been regarded as the weakest moment assumption, but the necessary has never been shown. In this paper, we study the strong and weak convergence of generalized Friedman urns. It is proved that, when the random replacement matrix is irreducible in probability, the sufficient and necessary moment assumption for the almost sure convergence of the urn proportions is that the expectation of the replacement matrix is finite, which is less stringent than the $L\log L$ moment assumption, and when the replacement is reducible, the $L\log L$ moment assumption is the weakest sufficient condition. The rate of convergence and the strong and weak convergence of non-homogenous generalized Friedman urns are also derived.

The moments of the maximum of normalized partial sums related to laws of the iterated logarithm under the sub-linear expectation

Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables on a sub-linear expectation space $(Ω,\mathscr{H},\widehat{\mathbb E})$, $S_n=X_1+\ldots+X_n$. We consider the moments of $\max_{n\ge 1}|S_n|/\sqrt{2n\log\log n}$. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the moments to be finite are given. As an application, we obtain the law of the iterated logarithm for moving average processes of independent and identically distributed random variables.

On the Theory of Covariate-Adaptive Designs

Pocock and Simon's marginal procedure (Pocock and Simon, 1975) is often implemented forbalancing treatment allocation over influential covariates in clinical trials. However, the theoretical properties of Pocock and Simion's procedure have remained largely elusive for decades. In this paper, we propose a general framework for covariate-adaptive designs and establish the corresponding theory under widely satisfied conditions. As a special case, we obtain the theoretical properties of Pocock and Simon's marginal procedure: the marginal imbalances and overall imbalance are bounded in probability, but the within-stratum imbalances increase with the rate of $\sqrt{n}$ as the sample size increases. The theoretical results provide new insights about balance properties of covariate-adaptive randomization procedures and open a door to study the theoretical properties of statistical inference for clinical trials based on covariate-adaptive randomization procedures.

Lindeberg's central limit theorems for martingale like sequences under sub-linear expectations

The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, general central limit theorems and functional central limit theorems are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a G-Brownian motion without using stochastic calculus is given. For proving the results, we have also established Rosenthal's inequality and the exceptional inequality for the martingale like random variables.

The convergence of the sums of independent random variables under the sub-linear expectations

Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables on a probability space $(Ω, \mathcal{F}, P)$ and $S_n=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$. It is well-known that the almost sure convergence, the convergence in probability and the convergence in distribution of $S_n$ are equivalent. In this paper, we prove similar results for the independent random variables under the sub-linear expectations, and give a group of sufficient and necessary conditions for these convergence. For proving the results, the Levy and Kolmogorov maximal inequalities for independent random variables under the sub-linear expectation are established. As an application of the maximal inequalities, the sufficient and necessary conditions for the central limit theorem of independent and identically distributed random variables are also obtained.

Exponential inequalities under sub-linear expectations with applications to laws of the iterated logarithm

Kolmogorov's exponential inequalities are basic tools for studying the strong limit theorems such as the classical laws of the iterated logarithm for both independent and dependent random variables. This paper establishes the Kolmogorov type exponential inequalities of the partial sums of independent random variables as well as negatively dependent random variables under the sub-linear expectations. As applications of the exponential inequalities, the laws of the iterated logarithm in the sense of non-additive capacities are proved for independent or negatively dependent identically distributed random variables with finite second order moments. For deriving a lower bound of an exponential inequality, a central limit theorem is also proved under the sub-linear expectation for random variables with only finite variances.

Strong limit theorems for extended independent and extended negatively dependent random variables under non-linear expectations

Limit theorems for non-additive probabilities or non-linear expectations are challenging issues which have raised progressive interest recently. The purpose of this paper is to study the strong law of large numbers and the law of the iterated logarithm for a sequence of random variables in a sub-linear expectation space under a concept of extended independence which is much weaker and easier to verify than the independence proposed by Peng (2008b). We introduce a concept of extended negative dependence which is an extension of this kind of weak independence and the extended negative independence relative to classical probability appeared in recent literatures. Powerful tools as the moment inequality and Kolmogorov's exponential inequality are established for this kind of extended negatively independent random variables, which improve those of Chen, Chen and Ng(2010) a lot. And the strong law of large numbers and the law of iterated logarithm are obtained by applying these inequalities.

Convergence to a self-normalized G-Brownian motion

G-Brownian motion has a very rich and interesting new structure which nontrivially generalizes the classical one. Its quadratic variation process is also a continuous process with independent and stationary increments. We prove a self-normalized functional central limit theorem for independent and identically distributed random variables under the sub-linear expectation with the limit process being a G-Browian motion self-normalized by its quadratic variation. To prove the self-normalized central limit theorem, we also establish a new Donsker's invariance principle.

Self-normalized moderate deviation and laws of the iterated logarithm under G-expectation

The sub-linear expectation or called G-expectation is a nonlinear expectation having advantage of modeling non-additive probability problems and the volatility uncertainty in finance. Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables in a sub-linear expectation space $(Ω, \mathscr{H}, \widehat{\mathbb E})$. Denote $S_n=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$ and $V_n^2=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k^2$. In this paper, a moderate deviation for self-normalized sums, that is, the asymptotic capacity of the event $\{S_n/V_n \ge x_n \}$ for $x_n=o(\sqrt{n})$, is found both for identically distributed random variables and independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables. As an applications, the self-normalized laws of the iterated logarithm are obtained.

A Gaussian Process Approximation for a two-color Randomly Reinforced Urns

We prove a Gaussian process approximation for the sequence of random compositions of a two-color randomly reinforced urn for both the cases with the equal and unequal reinforcement means. By using the Gaussian approximation, the law of the iterated logarithm and the functional limit central limit theorem in both the stable convergence sense and the almost-sure conditional convergence sense are established. Also as a consequence, we are able to to prove that the distribution of the urn composition has no points masses both when the reinforcement means are equal and unequal under the assumption of only finite $(2+ε)$-th moments.

Immigrated urn models - asymptotic properties and applications

Urn models have been widely studied and applied in both scientific and social science disciplines. In clinical studies, the adoption of urn models in treatment allocation schemes has been proved to be beneficial to both researchers, by providing more efficient clinical trials, and patients, by increasing the likelihood of receiving the better treatment. In this paper, we propose a new and general class of immigrated urn (IMU) models that incorporates the immigration mechanism into the urn process. Theoretical properties are developed and the advantages of the IMU models are discussed. In general, the IMU models have smaller variabilities than the classical urn models, yielding more powerful statistical inferences in applications. Illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the wide applicability of the IMU models. The proposed IMU framework, including many popular classical urn models, not only offers a unify perspective for us to comprehend the urn process, but also enables us to generate several novel urn models with desirable properties.
