Almost representations of algebras and quantization

We introduce the notion of almost representations of Lie algebras and quantum tori, and establish an Ulam-stability type phenomenon: every irreducible almost representation is close to a genuine irreducible representation. As an application, we prove that geometric quantizations of the two-dimensional sphere and the two-dimensional torus are conjugate in the semi-classical limit up to a small error.

Coarse nodal count and topological persistence

Courant's theorem implies that the number of nodal domains of a Laplace eigenfunction is controlled by the corresponding eigenvalue. Over the years, there have been various attempts to find an appropriate generalization of this statement in different directions. We propose a new take on this problem using ideas from topological data analysis. We show that if one counts the nodal domains in a coarse way, basically ignoring small oscillations, Courant's theorem extends to linear combinations of eigenfunctions, to their products, to other operators, and to higher topological invariants of nodal sets. We also obtain a coarse version of the Bézout estimate for common zeros of linear combinations of eigenfunctions. We show that our results are essentially sharp and that the coarse count is necessary, since these extensions fail in general for the standard count. Our approach combines multiscale polynomial approximation in Sobolev spaces with new results in the theory of persistence modules and barcodes.

Lagrangian tetragons and instabilities in Hamiltonian dynamics

We present a new existence mechanism, based on symplectic topology, for orbits of Hamiltonian flows connecting a pair of disjoint subsets in the phase space. The method involves function theory on symplectic manifolds combined with rigidity of Lagrangian submanifolds. Applications include superconductivity channels in nearly integrable systems and dynamics near a perturbed unstable equilibrium.

Topological Persistence in Geometry and Analysis

The theory of persistence modules is an emerging field of algebraic topology which originated in topological data analysis. In these notes we provide a concise introduction into this field and give an account on some of its interactions with geometry and analysis. In particular, we present applications of persistence to symplectic topology, including the geometry of symplectomorphism groups and embedding problems. Furthermore, we discuss topological function theory which provides a new insight on oscillation of functions. The material should be accessible to readers with a basic background in algebraic and differential topology.

Spectral aspects of the Berezin transform

We discuss the Berezin transform, a Markov operator associated to positive operator valued measures (POVMs), in a number of contexts including the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, Donaldson's dynamical system on the space of Hermitian products on a complex vector space, representations of finite groups, and quantum noise. In particular, we calculate the spectral gap for quantization in terms of the fundamental tone of the phase space. Our results confirm a prediction of Donaldson for the spectrum of the Q-operator on Kahler manifolds with constant scalar curvature. Furthermore, viewing POVMs as data clouds, we study their spectral features via geometry of measure metric spaces and the diffusion distance.

On Sandon-type metrics for contactomorphism groups

For certain contact manifolds admitting a 1-periodic Reeb flow we construct a conjugation-invariant norm on the universal cover of the contactomorphism group. With respect to this norm the group admits a quasi-isometric monomorphism of the real line. The construction involves the partial order on contactomorphisms and symplectic intersections. This norm descends to a conjugation-invariant norm on the contactomorphism group. As a counterpoint, we discuss conditions under which conjugation-invariant norms for contactomorphisms are necessarily bounded.

Symplectic geometry of quantum noise

We discuss a quantum counterpart, in the sense of the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, of certain constraints on Poisson brackets coming from "hard" symplectic geometry. It turns out that they can be interpreted in terms of the quantum noise of observables and their joint measurements in operational quantum mechanics. Our findings include various geometric mechanisms of quantum noise production and a noise-localization uncertainty relation. The methods involve Floer theory and Poisson bracket invariants originated in function theory on symplectic manifolds.

Symplectic quasi-states on the quadric surface and Lagrangian submanifolds

The quantum homology of the monotone complex quadric surface splits into the sum of two fields. We outline a proof of the following statement: The unities of these fields give rise to distinct symplectic quasi-states defined by asymptotic spectral invariants. In fact, these quasi-states turn out to be "supported" on disjoint Lagrangian submanifolds. Our method involves a spectral sequence which starts at homology of the loop space of the 2-sphere and whose higher differentials are computed via symplectic field theory, in particular with the help of the Bourgeois-Oancea exact sequence.

Geometry of contact transformations and domains: orderability versus squeezing

Gromov's famous non-squeezing theorem (1985) states that the standard symplectic ball cannot be symplectically squeezed into any cylinder of smaller radius. Does there exist an analogue of this result in contact geometry? Our main finding is that the answer depends on the sizes of the domains in question: We establish contact non-squeezing on large scales, and show that it disappears on small scales. The algebraic counterpart of the (non)-squeezing problem for contact domains is the question of existence of a natural partial order on the universal cover of the contactomorphisms group of a contact manifold. In contrast to our earlier beliefs, we show that the answer to this question is very sensitive to the topology of the manifold. For instance, we prove that the standard contact sphere is non-orderable while the real projective space is known to be orderable. Our methods include a new embedding technique in contact geometry as well as a generalized Floer homology theory which contains both cylindrical contact homology and Hamiltonian Floer homology. We discuss links to a number of miscellaneous topics such as topology of free loops spaces, quantum mechanics and semigroups. An erratum is attached whose purpose is to is to correct a number of inconsistencies in the main paper. These are related to the grading of generalized Floer homology and do not affect formulations and proofs of the main results of the paper.

On continuity of quasi-morphisms for symplectic maps

We discuss $C^0$-continuous homogeneous quasi-morphisms on the identity component of the group of compactly supported symplectomorphisms of a symplectic manifold. Such quasi-morphisms extend to the $C^0$-closure of this group inside the homeomorphism group. We show that for standard symplectic balls of any dimension, as well as for compact oriented surfaces, other than the sphere, the space of such quasi-morphisms is infinite-dimensional. In the case of surfaces, we give a user-friendly topological characterization of such quasi-morphisms. We also present an application to Hofer's geometry on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the ball.

Rigid subsets of symplectic manifolds

We show that there is an hierarchy of intersection rigidity properties of sets in a closed symplectic manifold: some sets cannot be displaced by symplectomorphisms from more sets than the others. We also find new examples of rigidity of intersections involving, in particular, specific fibers of moment maps of Hamiltonian torus actions, monotone Lagrangian submanifolds (following the works of P.Albers and P.Biran-O.Cornea), as well as certain, possibly singular, sets defined in terms of Poisson-commutative subalgebras of smooth functions. In addition, we get some geometric obstructions to semi-simplicity of the quantum homology of symplectic manifolds. The proofs are based on the Floer-theoretical machinery of partial symplectic quasi-states.

Growth of maps, distortion in groups and symplectic geometry

In the present paper we study two sequences of real numbers associated to a symplectic diffeomorphism: the uniform norm of the differential of its n-th iteration and the word length of its n-th iteration. In the latter case we assume that our diffeomorphism lies in a finitely generated group of symplectic diffeomorphisms. We find lower bounds on the growth rates of these sequences in a number of situations. These bounds depend on the symplectic geometry of the manifold rather than on the specific choice of a diffeomorphism. They are obtained by using recent results of Schwarz on Floer homology. Applications to the Zimmer program are presented. We prove non-existence of certain non-linear symplectic representations for finitely generated groups including some lattices and Baumslag-Solitar groups.
