Cones of traces arising from AF C*-algebras

We characterize the topological non-cancellative cones that are expressible as projective limits of finite powers of $[0,\infty]$. These are also the cones of lower semicontinuous extended-valued traces on AF C*-algebras. Our main result may be regarded as a generalization of the fact that any Choquet simplex is a projective limit of finite dimensional simplices. To obtain our main result, we first establish a duality between certain non-cancellative topological cones and Cuntz semigroups with real multiplication. This duality extends the duality between compact convex sets and complete order unit vector spaces to a non-cancellative setting.

Majorization in C*-algebras

We investigate the closed convex hull of unitary orbits of selfadjoint elements in arbitrary unital C*-algebras. Using a notion of majorization against unbounded traces, a characterization of these closed convex hulls is obtained. Furthermore, for C*-algebras satisfying Blackadar's strict comparison of positive elements by traces or for collections of C*-algebras with a uniform bound on their nuclear dimension, an upper bound for the number of unitary conjugates in a convex combination required to approximate an element in the closed convex hull within a given error is shown to exist. This property, however, fails for certain "badly behaved" simple nuclear C*-algebras.

Normal subgroups of invertibles and of unitaries in a C*-algebra

We investigate the normal subgroups of the groups of invertibles and unitaries in the connected component of the identity. By relating normal subgroups to closed two-sided ideals we obtain a "sandwich condition" describing all the closed normal subgroups both in the invertible and in the the unitary case. We use this to prove a conjecture by Elliott and Rordam: in a simple C*-algebra, the group of approximately inner automorphisms induced by unitaries in the connected component of the identity is topologically simple. Turning to non-closed subgroups, we show, among other things, that in simple unital C*-algebra the commutator subgroup of the group of invertibles in the connected component of the identity is a simple group modulo its center. A similar result holds for unitaries under a mild extra assumption.

The cone of functionals on the Cuntz semigroup

The functionals on an ordered semigroup S in the category Cu--a category to which the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra naturally belongs--are investigated. After appending a new axiom to the category Cu, it is shown that the "realification" S_R of S has the same functionals as S and, moreover, is recovered functorially from the cone of functionals of S. Furthermore, if S has a weak Riesz decomposition property, then S_R has refinement and interpolation properties which imply that the cone of functionals on S is a complete distributive lattice. These results apply to the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra. At the level of C*-algebras, the operation of realification is matched by tensoring with a certain stably projectionless C*-algebra.

Nuclear dimension and sums of commutators

The problem of expressing a selfadjoint element that is zero on every bounded trace as a finite sum (or a limit of sums) of commutators is investigated in the setting of C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension. Upper bounds -- in terms of the nuclear dimension of the C*-algebra -- are given for the number of commutators needed in these sums. An example is given of a simple, nuclear C*-algebra (of infinite nuclear dimension) with a unique tracial state and with elements that vanish on all bounded traces and yet are "badly" approximated by finite sums of commutators. Finally, the same problem is investigated on (possibly non-nuclear) simple unital C*-algebras assuming suitable regularity properties in their Cuntz semigroups.

The Cuntz semigroup of some spaces of dimension at most two

It is shown that the Cuntz semigroup of a space with dimension at most two, and with second cohomology of its compact subsets equal to zero, is isomorphic to the ordered semigroup of lower semicontinuous functions on the space with values in the natural numbers with the infinity adjoined. This computation is then used to obtain the Cuntz semigroup of all compact surfaces. A converse to the first computation is also proven: if the Cuntz semigroup of a separable C*-algebra is isomorphic to the lower semicontinuous functions on a topological space with values in the extended natural numbers, then the C*-algebra is commutative up to stability, and its spectrum satisfies the dimensional and cohomological conditions mentioned above.

Classification of inductive limits of 1-dimensional NCCW complexes

A classification result is obtained for the C*-algebras that are (stably isomorphic to) inductive limits of 1-dimensional noncommutative CW complexes with trivial $K_1$-group. The classifying functor Cu is defined in terms of the Cuntz semigroup of the unitization of the algebra. For the simple C*-algebras covered by the classification, Cu reduces to the ordered $K_0$-group, the cone of traces, and the pairing between them. As an application of the classification, it is shown that the crossed products by a quasi-free action $O_2\rtimes_λ\mathbb{R}$ are all isomorphic for a dense set of positive irrational numbers $λ$.

Similarity of perturbations of the shift and a different product of rational functions

Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the similarity between two perturbations of the (backward) shift by rank one operators, under certain assumptions on the perturbations. The proof of similarity is based on an explicit construction of intertwiners between the perturbations. These intertwiners, in turn, are parametrized by the elements of a certain algebra, with the group of "circle invertible" elements of this algebra giving rise to invertible intertwiners.

Divisibility properties for C*-algebras

We consider three notions of divisibility in the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra, and show how they reflect properties of the C*-algebra. We develop methods to construct (simple and non-simple) C*-algebras with specific divisibility behaviour. As a byproduct of our investigations, we show that there exists a sequence $(A_n)$ of simple unital infinite dimensional C*-algebras such that the product $\prod_{n=1}^\infty A_n$ has a character.

An algebraic approach to the radius of comparison

The radius of comparison is an invariant for unital C*-algebras which extends the theory of covering dimension to noncommutative spaces. We extend its definition to general C*-algebras, and give an algebraic (as opposed to functional-theoretic) reformulation. This yields new permanence properties for the radius of comparison which strengthen its analogy with covering dimension for commutative spaces. We then give several applications of these results. New examples of C*-algebras with finite radius of comparison are given, and the question of when the Cuntz classes of finitely generated Hilbert modules form a hereditary subset of the Cuntz semigroup is addressed. Most interestingly, perhaps, we treat the question of when a full hereditary subalgebra B of a stable C*-algebra A is itself stable, giving a characterization in terms of the radius of comparison. We also use the radius of comparison to quantify the least n for which a C*-algebra D without bounded 2-quasitraces or unital quotients has the property that M_n(D) is stable.

Hilbert C*-modules over a commutative C*-algebra

This paper studies the problems of embedding and isomorphism for countably generated Hilbert C*-modules over commutative C*-algebras. When the fibre dimensions differ sufficiently, relative to the dimension of the spectrum, we show that there is an embedding between the modules. This result continues to hold over recursive subhomogeneous C*-algebras. For certain modules, including all modules over $C_0(X)$ when $dim X \leq 3$, isomorphism and embedding are determined by the restrictions to the sets where the fibre dimensions are constant. These considerations yield results for the Cuntz semigroup, including a computation of the Cuntz semigroup for $C_0(X)$ when $dim X \leq 3$, in terms of cohomological data about $X$.
