Dual-quaternion learning control for autonomous vehicle trajectory tracking with safety guarantees

We propose a learning-based trajectory tracking controller for autonomous robotic platforms whose motion can be described kinematically on $\mathrm{SE}(3)$. The controller is formulated in the dual quaternion framework and operates at the velocity level, assuming direct command of angular and linear velocities, as is standard in many aerial vehicles and omnidirectional mobile robots. Gaussian Process (GP) regression is integrated into a geometric feedback law to learn and compensate online for unknown, state-dependent disturbances and modeling imperfections affecting both attitude and position, while preserving the algebraic structure and coupling properties inherent to rigid-body motion. The proposed approach does not rely on explicit parametric models of the unknown effects, making it well-suited for robotic systems subject to sensor-induced disturbances, unmodeled actuation couplings, and environmental uncertainties. A Lyapunov-based analysis establishes probabilistic ultimate boundedness of the pose tracking error under bounded GP uncertainty, providing formal stability guarantees for the learning-based controller. Simulation results demonstrate accurate and smooth trajectory tracking in the presence of realistic, localized disturbances, including correlated rotational and translational effects arising from magnetometer perturbations. These results illustrate the potential of combining geometric modeling and probabilistic learning to achieve robust, data-efficient pose control for autonomous robotic systems.

Virtual Affine Nonholonomic Constraints

Virtual constraints are relations imposed in a control system that become invariant via feedback, instead of real physical constraints acting on the system. Nonholonomic systems are mechanical systems with non-integrable constraints on the velocities. In this work, we introduce the notion of virtual affine nonholonomic constraints in a geometric framework. More precisely, it is a controlled invariant affine distribution associated with an affine connection mechanical control system. We show the existence and uniqueness of a control law defining a virtual affine nonholonomic constraint.

Optimal Control with Broken Symmetry of Multi-Agent Systems on Lie Groups

In this paper we study reduction by symmetry for optimality conditions in optimal control problems of left-invariant affine multi-agent control systems, with partial symmetry breaking cost functions. Our approach emphasizes the role of variational principles. Specifically, we recast the optimal control problem as a constrained variational problem with a partial symmetry breaking Hamiltonian and obtain the reduced optimality conditions from a reduced variational principle via Pontryagin Maximum Principle. We apply the results to a collision avoidance problem for multiple unicycles in the presence of an obstacle.

Variational integrators for non-autonomous systems with applications to stabilization of multi-agent formations

Numerical methods that preserve geometric invariants of the system, such as energy, momentum or the symplectic form, are called geometric integrators. Variational integrators are an important class of geometric integrators. The general idea for those variational integrators is to discretize Hamilton's principle rather than the equations of motion in a way that preserves some of the invariants of the original system. In this paper we construct variational integrators with fixed time step for time-dependent Lagrangian systems modelling an important class of autonomous dissipative systems. These integrators are derived via a family of discrete Lagrangian functions each one for a fixed time-step. This allows to recover at each step on the set of discrete sequences the preservation properties of variational integrators for autonomous Lagrangian systems, such as symplecticity or backward error analysis for these systems. We also present a discrete Noether theorem for this class of systems. Applications of the results are shown for the problem of formation stabilization of multi-agent systems.

Variational problems on Riemannian manifolds with constrained accelerations

We introduce variational problems on Riemannian manifolds with constrained acceleration and derive necessary conditions for normal extremals in the constrained variational problem. The problem consists on minimizing a higher-order energy functional, among a set of admissible curves defined by a constraint on the covariant acceleration. In addition, we use this framework to address the elastic splines problem with obstacle avoidance in the presence of this type of contraints.

Symmetries and periodic orbits in simple hybrid Routhian systems

Symmetries are ubiquitous in a wide range of nonlinear systems. Particularly in systems whose dynamics are determined by a Lagrangian or Hamiltonian function. For hybrid systems which possess a continuous-time dynamics determined by a Lagrangian function, with a cyclic variable, the degrees of freedom for the corresponding hybrid Lagrangian system can be reduced by means of a method known as \textit{hybrid Routhian reduction}. In this paper we study sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic orbits in hybrid Routhian systems which also exhibit time-reversal symmetry. Likewise, we explore some stability aspects of such orbits through the characterization of the eigenvalues for the corresponding linearized Poincaré map. Finally, we apply the results to find periodic solutions in underactuated hybrid Routhian control systems.

Regularity properties of fiber derivatives associated with higher-order mechanical systems

The aim of this work is to study fiber derivatives associated to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions describing the dynamics of a higher-order autonomous dynamical system. More precisely, given a function in $T^*T^{(k-1)}Q$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for such a function to describe the dynamics of a kth-order autonomous dynamical system, thus being a kth-order Hamiltonian function. Then, we give a suitable definition of (hyper)regularity for these higher-order Hamiltonian functions in terms of their fiber derivative. In addition, we also study an alternative characterization of the dynamics in Lagrangian submanifolds in terms of the solutions of the higher-order Euler-Lagrange equations.

Lagrange-Poincaré reduction for optimal control of underactuated mechanical systems

We deal with regular Lagrangian constrained systems which are invariant under the action of a symmetry group. Fixing a connection on the higher-order principal bundle where the Lagrangian and the (independent) constraints are defined, the higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré equations of classical mechanical systems with higher-order constraints are obtained from classical Lagrangian reduction. Higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré operator is introduced to characterize higher-order Lagrange-Poincaré equations. Interesting applications are derived as, for instance, the optimal control of an underactuated Elroy's Beanie and a snakeboard seens as an optimization problem with higher-order constraints.

Second-order variational problems on Lie groupoids and optimal control applications

In this paper we study, from a variational and geometrical point of view, second-order variational problems on Lie groupoids and the construction of variational integrators for optimal control problems. First, we develop variational techniques for second-order variational problems on Lie groupoids and their applications to the construction of variational integrators for optimal control problems of mechanical systems. Next, we show how Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic groupoid gives intrinsically the discrete dynamics for second-order systems, both unconstrained and constrained, and we study the geometric properties of the implicit flow which defines the dynamics in the Lagrangian submanifold. We also study the theory of reduction by symmetries and the corresponding Noether theorem.

A geometric approach to the optimal control of nonholnomic mechanical systems

In this paper, we describe a constrained Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism for the optimal control of nonholonomic mechanical systems. In particular, we aim to minimize a cost functional, given initial and final conditions where the controlled dynamics is given by nonholonomic mechanical system. In our paper, the controlled equations are derived using a basis of vector fields adapted to the nonholonomic distribution and the Riemannian metric determined by the kinetic energy. Given a cost function, the optimal control problem is understood as a constrained problem or equivalently, under some mild regularity conditions, as a Hamiltonian problem on the cotangent bundle of the nonholonomic distribution. A suitable Lagrangian submanifold is also shown to lead to the correct dynamics. We demonstrate our techniques in several examples including a continuously variable transmission problem and motion planning for obstacle avoidance problems.

Geometric integrators for higher-order variational systems and their application to optimal control

Numerical methods that preserve geometric invariants of the system, such as energy, momentum or the symplectic form, are called geometric integrators. In this paper we present a method to construct symplectic-momentum integrators for higher-order Lagrangian systems. Given a regular higher-order Lagrangian $L\colon T^{(k)}Q\to\mathbb{R}$ with $k\geq 1$, the resulting discrete equations define a generally implicit numerical integrator algorithm on $T^{(k-1)}Q\times T^{(k-1)}Q$ that approximates the flow of the higher-order Euler--Lagrange equations for $L$. The algorithm equations are called higher-order discrete Euler--Lagrange equations and constitute a variational integrator for higher-order mechanical systems. The general idea for those variational integrators is to directly discretize Hamilton's principle rather than the equations of motion in a way that preserves the invariants of the original system, notably the symplectic form and, via a discrete version of Noether's theorem, the momentum map. We construct an exact discrete Lagrangian $L_d^e$ using the locally unique solution of the higher-order Euler--Lagrange equations for $L$ with boundary conditions. By taking the discrete Lagrangian as an approximation of $L_d^e$, we obtain variational integrators for higher-order mechanical systems. We apply our techniques to optimal control problems since, given a cost function, the optimal control problem is understood as a second-order variational problem.

Unified formalism for higher-order variational problems and its applications in optimal control

In this paper we consider an intrinsic point of view to describe the equations of motion for higher-order variational problems with constraints on higher-order trivial principal bundles. Our techniques are an adaptation of the classical Skinner-Rusk approach for the case of Lagrangian dynamics with higher-order constraints. We study a regular case where it is possible to establish a symplectic framework and, as a consequence, to obtain a unique vector field determining the dynamics. As an interesting application we deduce the equations of motion for optimal control of underactuated mechanical systems defined on principal bundles.

Variational integrators for underactuated mechanical control systems with symmetries

Optimal control problems for underactuated mechanical systems can be seen as a higher-order variational problem subject to higher-order constraints (that is, when the Lagrangian function and the constraints depend on higher-order derivatives such as the acceleration, jerk or jounces). In this paper we discuss the variational formalism for the class of underactuated mechanical control systems when the configuration space is a trivial principal bundle and the construction of variational integrators for such mechanical control systems. An interesting family of geometric integrators can be defined using discretizations of the Hamilton's principle of critical action. This family of geometric integrators is called variational integrators, being one of their main properties the preservation of geometric features as the symplecticity, momentum preservation and good behavior of the energy. We construct variational integrators for higher-order mechanical systems on trivial principal bundles and their extension for higher-order constrained systems and we devote special attention to the particular case of underactuated mechanical systems

Higher-order discrete variational problems with constraints

An interesting family of geometric integrators for Lagrangian systems can be defined using discretizations of the Hamilton's principle of critical action. This family of geometric integrators is called variational integrators. In this paper, we derive new variational integrators for higher-order lagrangian mechanical system subjected to higher-order constraints. From the discretization of the variational principles, we show that our methods are automatically symplectic and, in consequence, with a very good energy behavior. Additionally, the symmetries of the discrete Lagrangian imply that momenta is conserved by the integrator. Moreover, we extend our construction to variational integrators where the lagrangian is explicitly time-dependent. Finally, some motivating applications of higher-order problems are considered; in particular, optimal control problems for explicitly time-dependent underactuated systems and an interpolation problem on Riemannian manifolds.

Discrete second-order Euler-Poincaré equations. Applications to optimal control

In this paper we will discuss some new developments in the design of numerical methods for optimal control problems of Lagrangian systems on Lie groups. We will construct these geometric integrators using discrete variational calculus on Lie groups, deriving a discrete version of the second-order Euler-Lagrange equations. Interesting applications as, for instance, a discrete derivation of the Euler-Poincaré equations for second-order Lagrangians and its application to optimal control of a rigid body, and of a Cosserat rod are shown at the end of the paper.

On the geometry of higher-order variational problems on Lie groups

In this paper, we describe a geometric setting for higher-order lagrangian problems on Lie groups. Using left-trivialization of the higher-order tangent bundle of a Lie group and an adaptation of the classical Skinner-Rusk formalism, we deduce an intrinsic framework for this type of dynamical systems. Interesting applications as, for instance, a geometric derivation of the higher-order Euler-Poincaré equations, optimal control of underactuated control systems whose configuration space is a Lie group are shown, among others, along the paper.
