History entanglement entropy

A formalism is proposed to describe entangled quantum histories, and their entanglement entropy. We define a history vector, living in a tensor space with basis elements corresponding to the allowed histories, i.e. histories with nonvanishing amplitudes. The amplitudes are the components of the history vector, and contain the dynamical information. Probabilities of measurement sequences, and resulting collapse, are given by generalized Born rules: they are all expressed by means of projections and scalar products involving the history vector. Entangled history states are introduced, and a history density matrix is defined in terms of ensembles of history vectors. The corresponding history entropies (and history entanglement entropies for composite systems) are explicitly computed in two examples taken from quantum computation circuits.

Covariant hamiltonian for supergravity in $d=3$ and $d=4$

We extend the covariant canonical formalism recently discussed in ref. [1] to geometric theories coupled to both bosonic and fermionic $p$-forms. This allows a covariant hamiltonian treatment of supergravity theories. As examples we present the covariant hamiltonian formulation for $d=3$ anti-De Sitter supergravity and for the "new minimal" $d=4$, $N=1$ supergravity (with $1$-form and $2$-form auxiliary fields). Form-Poisson brackets and form-Dirac brackets are defined, and used to find the form-canonical generators of all gauge symmetries via an algorithmic procedure.

Covariant hamiltonian for gravity coupled to $p$-forms

We review the covariant canonical formalism initiated by D'Adda, Nelson and Regge in 1985, and extend it to include a definition of form-Poisson brackets (FPB) for geometric theories coupled to $p$-forms, gauging free differential algebras. The form-Legendre transformation and the form-Hamilton equations are derived from a $d$-form Lagrangian with $p$-form dynamical fields $ϕ$. Momenta are defined as derivatives of the Lagrangian with respect to the "velocities" $dϕ$ and no preferred time direction is used. Action invariance under infinitesimal form-canonical transformations can be studied in this framework, and a generalized Noether theorem is derived, both for global and local symmetries. We apply the formalism to vielbein gravity in $d=3$ and $d=4$. In the $d=3$ theory we can define form-Dirac brackets, and use an algorithmic procedure to construct the canonical generators for local Lorentz rotations and diffeomorphisms. In $d=4$ the canonical analysis is carried out using FPB, since the definition of form-Dirac brackets is problematic. Lorentz generators are constructed, while diffeomorphisms are generated by the Lie derivative. A "doubly covariant" hamiltonian formalism is presented, allowing to maintain manifest Lorentz covariance at every stage of the Legendre transformation. The idea is to take curvatures as "velocities" in the definition of momenta.

Hodge Dualities on Supermanifolds

We discuss the cohomology of superforms and integral forms from a new perspective based on a recently proposed Hodge dual operator. We show how the superspace constraints (a.k.a. rheonomic parametrisation) are translated from the space of superforms $Ω^{(p|0)}$ to the space of integral forms $Ω^{(p|m)}$ where $0 \leq p \leq n$, $n$ is the bosonic dimension of the supermanifold and $m$ its fermionic dimension. We dwell on the relation between supermanifolds with non-trivial curvature and Ramond-Ramond fields, for which the Laplace-Beltrami differential, constructed with our Hodge dual, is an essential ingredient. We discuss the definition of Picture Lowering and Picture Raising Operators (acting on the space of superforms and on the space of integral forms) and their relation with the cohomology. We construct non-abelian curvatures for gauge connections in the space $Ω^{(1|m)}$ and finally discuss Hodge dual fields within the present framework.

Higher form gauge fields and their nonassociative symmetry algebras

We show that geometric theories with $p$-form gauge fields have a nonassociative symmetry structure, extending an underlying Lie algebra. This nonassociativity is controlled by the same Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology that classifies free differential algebras, $p$-form generalizations of Cartan-Maurer equations. A possible relation with flux backgrounds of closed string theory is pointed out.

Noncommutative Chern-Simons gauge and gravity theories and their geometric Seiberg-Witten map

We use a geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map between noncommutative and commutative gauge theories to find the expansion of noncommutative Chern-Simons (CS) theory in any odd dimension $D$ and at first order in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$. This expansion extends the classical CS theory with higher powers of the curvatures and their derivatives. A simple explanation of the equality between noncommutative and commutative CS actions in $D=1$ and $D=3$ is obtained. The $θ$ dependent terms are present for $D\geq 5$ and give a higher derivative theory on commutative space reducing to classical CS theory for $θ\to 0$. These terms depend on the field strength and not on the bare gauge potential. In particular, as for the Dirac-Born-Infeld action, these terms vanish in the slowly varying field strength approximation: in this case noncommutative and commutative CS actions coincide in any dimension. The Seiberg-Witten map on the $D=5$ noncommutative CS theory is explored in more detail, and we give its second order $θ$-expansion for any gauge group. The example of extended $D=5$ CS gravity, where the gauge group is $SU(2,2)$, is treated explicitly.

OSp(1|4) supergravity and its noncommutative extension

We review the OSp(1|4)-invariant formulation of N=1, D=4 supergravity and present its noncommutative extension, based on a star-product originating from an abelian twist with deformation parameter θ. After use of a geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map, we obtain an extended (higher derivative) supergravity theory, invariant under usual OSp(1|4) gauge transformations. Gauge fixing breaks the OSp(1|4) symmetry to its Lorentz subgroup, and yields a Lorentz invariant extended theory whose classical limit θ--> 0 is the usual N=1, D=4 AdS supergravity.

Extended gravity theories from dynamical noncommutativity

In this paper we couple noncommutative (NC) vielbein gravity to scalar fields. Noncommutativity is encoded in a star product between forms, given by an abelian twist (a twist with commuting vector fields). A geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map for abelian twists yields an extended theory of gravity coupled to scalars, where all fields are ordinary (commutative) fields. The vectors defining the twist can be related to the scalar fields and their derivatives, and hence acquire dynamics. Higher derivative corrections to the classical Einstein-Hilbert and Klein-Gordon actions are organized in successive powers of the noncommutativity parameter θ^{AB}.

Noncommutative gravity at second order via Seiberg-Witten map

We develop a general strategy to express noncommutative actions in terms of commutative ones by using a recently developed geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map (SW map) between noncommutative and commutative fields. We apply this general scheme to the noncommutative vierbein gravity action and provide a SW differential equation for the action itself as well as a recursive solution at all orders in the noncommutativity parameter θ. We thus express the action at order θ^n+2 in terms of noncommutative fields of order at most θ^n+1 and, iterating the procedure, in terms of noncommutative fields of order at most θ^n. This in particular provides the explicit expression of the action at order θ^2 in terms of the usual commutative spin connection and vierbein fields. The result is an extended gravity action on commutative spacetime that is manifestly invariant under local Lorentz rotations and general coordinate transformations.

Noncommutative gravity coupled to fermions: second order expansion via Seiberg-Witten map

We use the Seiberg-Witten map (SW map) to expand noncommutative gravity coupled to fermions in terms of ordinary commuting fields. The action is invariant under general coordinate transformations and local Lorentz rotations, and has the same degrees of freedom as the commutative gravity action. The expansion is given up to second order in the noncommutativity parameter θ. A geometric reformulation and generalization of the SW map is presented that applies to any abelian twist. Compatibility of the map with hermiticity and charge conjugation conditions is proven. The action is shown to be real and invariant under charge conjugation at all orders in θ. This implies the bosonic part of the action to be even in θ, while the fermionic part is even in θ for Majorana fermions.

Quantum Computing with Superqubits

We analyze some aspects of quantum computing with super-qubits (squbits). We propose the analogue of a superfield formalism, and give a physical interpretation for the Grassmann coefficients in the squbit expansion as fermionic creation operators of an auxiliary quantum system. In the simplest case the squbit is a superposition of one Bose X Bose and one Fermi X Fermi state, and its norm is invariant under a U(2) group realized with Clifford-valued matrices. This case can be generalized to a superposition of n_B bosonic and n_F fermionic states, with a norm invariant under U(n_B + n_F). Entanglement between squbits, super quantum gates and teleportation are discussed.

Noncommutative Gravity Solutions

We consider noncommutative geometries obtained from a triangular Drinfeld twist and review the formulation of noncommutative gravity. A detailed study of the abelian twist geometry is presented, including the fundamental theorem of noncommutative Riemannian geometry. Inspired by [1, 2], we obtain solutions of noncommutative Einstein equations by considering twists that are compatible with the curved spacetime metric.

Finite group discretization of Yang-Mills and Einstein actions

Discrete versions of the Yang-Mills and Einstein actions are proposed for any finite group. These actions are invariant respectively under local gauge transformations, and under the analogues of Lorentz and general coordinate transformations. The case Z_n \times Z_n \times...\times Z_n is treated in some detail, recovering the Wilson action for Yang-Mills theories, and a new discretized action for gravity.

Quantum Orthogonal Planes: ISO_{q,r}(N) and SO_{q,r}(N) -- Bicovariant Calculi and Differential Geometry on Quantum Minkowski Space

We construct differential calculi on multiparametric quantum orthogonal planes in any dimension N. These calculi are bicovariant under the action of the full inhomogeneous (multiparametric) quantum group ISO_{q,r}(N), and do contain dilatations. If we require bicovariance only under the quantum orthogonal group SO_{q,r}(N), the calculus on the q-plane can be expressed in terms of its coordinates x^a, differentials dx^a and partial derivatives \partial_a without the need of dilatations, thus generalizing known results to the multiparametric case. Using real forms that lead to the signature (n+1,m) with m = n-1, n, n+1 , we find ISO_{q,r}(n+1, m) and SO_{q,r}(n+1,m) bicovariant calculi on the multiparametric quantum spaces. The particular case of the quantum Minkowski space ISO_{q,r}(3,1)/SO_{q,r}(3,1) is treated in detail. The conjugated partial derivatives \partial_a* can be expressed as linear combinations of the \partial_a. This allows a deformation of the phase-space where no additional operators (besides x^a and p_a) are needed.

Universal Enveloping Algebra and Differential Calculi on Orthogonal q-groups

We review the construction of the multiparametric quantum group $ISO_{q,r}(N)$ as a projection from $SO_{q,r}(N+2) $ and show that it is a bicovariant bimodule over $SO_{q,r}(N)$. The universal enveloping algebra $U_{q,r}(iso(N))$, characterized as the Hopf algebra of regular functionals on $ISO_{q,r}(N)$, is found as a Hopf subalgebra of $U_{q,r}(so(N+2))$ and is shown to be a bicovariant bimodule over $U_{q,r}(so(N))$. An R-matrix formulation of $U_{q,r}(iso(N))$ is given and we prove the pairing $U_{q,r}(iso(N))\leftrightarrow ISO_{q,r}(N)$. We analyze the subspaces of $U_{q,r}(iso(N))$ that define bicovariant differential calculi on $ISO_{q,r}(N)$.

Free Differential Algebras: Their Use in Field Theory and Dual Formulation

The gauging of free differential algebras (FDA's) produces gauge field theories containing antisymmetric tensors. The FDA's extend the Cartan-Maurer equations of ordinary Lie algebras by incorporating p-form potentials ($p > 1$). We study here the algebra of FDA transformations. To every p-form in the FDA we associate an extended Lie derivative $\ell$ generating a corresponding ``gauge" transformation. The field theory based on the FDA is invariant under these new transformations. This gives geometrical meaning to the antisymmetric tensors. The algebra of Lie derivatives is shown to close and provides the dual formulation of FDA's.

R-Matrix Formulation of the Quantum Inhomogeneous Groups Iso_qr(N) and Isp_qr(N)

The quantum commutations $RTT=TTR$ and the orthogonal (symplectic) conditions for the inhomogeneous multiparametric $q$-groups of the $B_n,C_n,D_n$ type are found in terms of the $R$-matrix of $B_{n+1},C_{n+1},D_{n+1}$. A consistent Hopf structure on these inhomogeneous $q$-groups is constructed by means of a projection from $B_{n+1},C_{n+1},D_{n+1}$. Real forms are discussed: in particular we obtain the $q$-groups $ISO_{q,r}(n+1,n-1)$, including the quantum Poincaré group.

A note on quantum structure constants

The Cartan-Maurer equations for any $q$-group of the $A_{n-1}, B_n, C_n, D_n$ series are given in a convenient form, which allows their direct computation and clarifies their connection with the $q=1$ case. These equations, defining the field strengths, are essential in the construction of $q$-deformed gauge theories. An explicit expression $\om ^i\we \om^j= -\Z {ij}{kl}\om ^k\we \om^l$ for the $q$-commutations of left-invariant one-forms is found, with $\Z{ij}{kl} \om^k \we \om^l \qonelim \om^j\we\om^i$.

U_q(N) Gauge Theories

Improving on an earlier proposal, we construct the gauge theories of the quantum groups $U_q(N)$. We find that these theories are consistent also with an ordinary (commuting) spacetime. The bicovariance conditions of the quantum differential calculus are essential in our construction. The gauge potentials and the field strengths are $q$-commuting ``fields", and satisfy $q$-commutation relations with the gauge parameters. The transformation rules of the potentials are given explicitly, and generalize the ordinary infinitesimal gauge variations. The $q$-lagrangian invariant under the $U_q(N)$ variations has the Yang-Mills form $\Fmn^i \Fmn^j g_{ij}$, the ``quantum metric'' $g_{ij}$ being a generalization of the Killing metric.
