Braided Hopf algebras and gauge transformations

We study infinitesimal gauge transformations of an equivariant noncommutative principal bundle as a braided Lie algebra of derivations. For this, we analyse general $K$-braided Hopf and Lie algebras, for $K$ a (quasi)triangular Hopf algebra of symmetries, and study their representations as braided derivations. We then study Drinfeld twist deformations of braided Hopf algebras and of Lie algebras of infinitesimal gauge transformations. We give examples coming from deformations of abelian and Jordanian type. In particular we explicitly describe the braided Lie algebra of gauge transformations of the instanton bundle and of the orthogonal bundle on the quantum sphere $S^4_θ$.

On Curvature and Torsion in Courant Algebroids

We study the graded geometric point of view of curvature and torsion of Q-manifolds (differential graded manifolds). In particular, we get a natural graded geometric definition of Courant algebroid curvature and torsion, which correctly restrict to Dirac structures. Depending on an auxiliary affine connection K, we introduce the K-curvature and K-torsion of a Courant algebroid connection. These are conventional tensors on the body. Finally, we compute their Ricci and scalar curvature.

Topological T-Duality for Twisted Tori

We apply the $C^*$-algebraic formalism of topological T-duality due to Mathai and Rosenberg to a broad class of topological spaces that include the torus bundles appearing in string theory compactifications with duality twists, such as nilmanifolds, as well as many other examples. We develop a simple procedure in this setting for constructing the T-duals starting from a commutative $C^*$-algebra with an action of ${\mathbb R}^n$. We treat the general class of almost abelian solvmanifolds in arbitrary dimension in detail, where we provide necessary and sufficient criteria for the existence of classical T-duals in terms of purely group theoretic data, and compute them explicitly as continuous-trace algebras with non-trivial Dixmier-Douady classes. We prove that any such solvmanifold has a topological T-dual given by a $C^*$-algebra bundle of noncommutative tori, which we also compute explicitly. The monodromy of the original torus bundle becomes a Morita equivalence among the fiber algebras, so that these $C^*$-algebras rigorously describe the T-folds from non-geometric string theory.

The Gauge Group of a Noncommutative Principal Bundle and Twist Deformations

We study noncommutative principal bundles (Hopf-Galois extensions) in the context of coquasitriangular Hopf algebras and their monoidal category of comodule algebras. When the total space is quasi-commutative, and thus the base space subalgebra is central, we define the gauge group as the group of vertical automorphisms or equivalently as the group of equivariant algebra maps. We study Drinfeld twist (2-cocycle) deformations of Hopf-Galois extensions and show that the gauge group of the twisted extension is isomorphic to the gauge group of the initial extension. In particular, noncommutative principal bundles arising via twist deformation of commutative principal bundles have classical gauge group. We illustrate the theory with a few examples.

Deformation quantization of principal bundles

We outline how Drinfeld twist deformation techniques can be applied to the deformation quantization of principal bundles into noncommutative principal bundles, and more in general to the deformation of Hopf-Galois extensions. First we twist deform the structure group in a quantum group, and this leads to a deformation of the fibers of the principal bundle. Next we twist deform a subgroup of the group of authomorphisms of the principal bundle, and this leads to a noncommutative base space. Considering both deformations we obtain noncommutative principal bundles with noncommutative fiber and base space as well.

Triproducts, nonassociative star products and geometry of R-flux string compactifications

We elucidate relations between different approaches to describing the nonassociative deformations of geometry that arise in non-geometric string theory. We demonstrate how to derive configuration space triproducts exactly from nonassociative phase space star products and extend the relationship in various directions. By foliating phase space with leaves of constant momentum we obtain families of Moyal-Weyl type deformations of triproducts, and we generalize them to new triproducts of differential forms and of tensor fields. We prove that nonassociativity disappears on-shell in all instances. We also extend our considerations to the differential geometry of nonassociative phase space, and study the induced deformations of configuration space diffeomorphisms. We further develop general prescriptions for deforming configuration space geometry from the nonassociative geometry of phase space, thus paving the way to a nonassociative theory of gravity in non-geometric flux compactifications of string theory.

Noncommutative Chern-Simons gauge and gravity theories and their geometric Seiberg-Witten map

We use a geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map between noncommutative and commutative gauge theories to find the expansion of noncommutative Chern-Simons (CS) theory in any odd dimension $D$ and at first order in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$. This expansion extends the classical CS theory with higher powers of the curvatures and their derivatives. A simple explanation of the equality between noncommutative and commutative CS actions in $D=1$ and $D=3$ is obtained. The $θ$ dependent terms are present for $D\geq 5$ and give a higher derivative theory on commutative space reducing to classical CS theory for $θ\to 0$. These terms depend on the field strength and not on the bare gauge potential. In particular, as for the Dirac-Born-Infeld action, these terms vanish in the slowly varying field strength approximation: in this case noncommutative and commutative CS actions coincide in any dimension. The Seiberg-Witten map on the $D=5$ noncommutative CS theory is explored in more detail, and we give its second order $θ$-expansion for any gauge group. The example of extended $D=5$ CS gravity, where the gauge group is $SU(2,2)$, is treated explicitly.

Noncommutative connections on bimodules and Drinfeld twist deformation

Given a Hopf algebra H, we study modules and bimodules over an algebra A that carry an H-action, as well as their morphisms and connections. Bimodules naturally arise when considering noncommutative analogues of tensor bundles. For quasitriangular Hopf algebras and bimodules with an extra quasi-commutativity property we induce connections on the tensor product over A of two bimodules from connections on the individual bimodules. This construction applies to arbitrary connections, i.e. not necessarily H-equivariant ones, and further extends to the tensor algebra generated by a bimodule and its dual. Examples of these noncommutative structures arise in deformation quantization via Drinfeld twists of the commutative differential geometry of a smooth manifold, where the Hopf algebra H is the universal enveloping algebra of vector fields (or a finitely generated Hopf subalgebra). We extend the Drinfeld twist deformation theory of modules and algebras to morphisms and connections that are not necessarily H-equivariant. The theory canonically lifts to the tensor product structure.

Constitutive relations and Schroedinger's formulation of nonlinear electromagnetic theories

We present a systematic study of nonlinear and higher derivatives extensions of electromagnetism. We clarify when action functionals S[F] can be explicitly obtained from arbitrary (not necessarily self-dual) nonlinear equations of motion. We show that the "Deformed twisted self-duality condition" proposal originated in the context of supergravity counterterms is actually the general framework needed to discuss self-dual theories starting from a variational principle. We generalize to nonlinear and higher derivatives theories Schroedinger formulation of Born-Infeld theory, and for the latter, and more in general for nonlinear theories, we derive a closed form expression of the corresponding deformed twisted self-duality conditions. This implies that the hypergeometric expression entering these duality conditions and leading to Born-Infeld theory satisfies a hidden quartic equation.

Constitutive relations, off shell duality rotations and the hypergeometric form of Born-Infeld theory

We review equivalent formulations of nonlinear and higher derivatives theories of electromagnetism exhibiting electric-magnetic duality rotations symmetry. We study in particular on shell and off shell formulations of this symmetry, at the level of action functionals as well as of equations of motion. We prove the conjecture that the action functional leading to Born-Infeld nonlinear electromagnetism, that is duality rotation invariant off shell and that is known to be a root of an algebraic equation of fourth order, is a hypergeometric function.

Extended gravity from noncommutativity

We review the first order theory of gravity (vierbein formulation) on noncommutative spacetime studied in [1, 2]. The first order formalism allows to couple the theory to fermions. This NC action is then reinterpreted (using the Seiberg-Witten map) as a gravity theory on commutative spacetime that contains terms with higher derivatives and higher powers of the curvature and depend on the noncommutativity parameter θ. When the noncommutativity is switched off we recover the usual gravity action coupled to fermions. The first nontrival corrections to the usual gravity action coupled to fermions are presented in a manifest Lorentz invariant form.

preprint2012arXiv

Extended gravity theories from dynamical noncommutativity

In this paper we couple noncommutative (NC) vielbein gravity to scalar fields. Noncommutativity is encoded in a star product between forms, given by an abelian twist (a twist with commuting vector fields). A geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map for abelian twists yields an extended theory of gravity coupled to scalars, where all fields are ordinary (commutative) fields. The vectors defining the twist can be related to the scalar fields and their derivatives, and hence acquire dynamics. Higher derivative corrections to the classical Einstein-Hilbert and Klein-Gordon actions are organized in successive powers of the noncommutativity parameter θ^{AB}.

Noncommutative gravity at second order via Seiberg-Witten map

We develop a general strategy to express noncommutative actions in terms of commutative ones by using a recently developed geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map (SW map) between noncommutative and commutative fields. We apply this general scheme to the noncommutative vierbein gravity action and provide a SW differential equation for the action itself as well as a recursive solution at all orders in the noncommutativity parameter θ. We thus express the action at order θ^n+2 in terms of noncommutative fields of order at most θ^n+1 and, iterating the procedure, in terms of noncommutative fields of order at most θ^n. This in particular provides the explicit expression of the action at order θ^2 in terms of the usual commutative spin connection and vierbein fields. The result is an extended gravity action on commutative spacetime that is manifestly invariant under local Lorentz rotations and general coordinate transformations.

Noncommutative gravity coupled to fermions: second order expansion via Seiberg-Witten map

We use the Seiberg-Witten map (SW map) to expand noncommutative gravity coupled to fermions in terms of ordinary commuting fields. The action is invariant under general coordinate transformations and local Lorentz rotations, and has the same degrees of freedom as the commutative gravity action. The expansion is given up to second order in the noncommutativity parameter θ. A geometric reformulation and generalization of the SW map is presented that applies to any abelian twist. Compatibility of the map with hermiticity and charge conjugation conditions is proven. The action is shown to be real and invariant under charge conjugation at all orders in θ. This implies the bosonic part of the action to be even in θ, while the fermionic part is even in θ for Majorana fermions.

Twisting all the way: from algebras to morphisms and connections

Given a Hopf algebra H and an algebra A that is an H-module algebra we consider the category of left H-modules and A-bimodules, where morphisms are just right A-linear maps (not necessarily H-equivariant). Given a twist F of H we then quantize (deform) H to H^F, A to A_\star and correspondingly the category of left H-modules and A-bimodules to the category of left H^F-modules and A_\star-bimodules. If we consider a quasitriangular Hopf algebra H, a quasi-commutative algebra A and quasi-commutative A-bimodules, we can further construct and study tensor products over A of modules and of morphisms, and their twist quantization. This study leads to the definition of arbitrary (i.e., not necessarily H-equivariant) connections on quasi-commutative A-bimodules, to extend these connections to tensor product modules and to quantize them to A_\star-bimodule connections. Their curvatures and those on tensor product modules are also determined.

Non-commutative Einstein equations and Seiberg-Witten map

The Seiberg--Witten map is a powerful tool in non-commutative field theory, and it has been recently obtained in the literature for gravity itself, to first order in non-commutativity. This paper, relying upon the pure-gravity form of the action functional considered in Ref. 2, studies the expansion to first order of the non-commutative Einstein equations, and whether the Seiberg--Witten map can lead to a solution of such equations when the underlying classical geometry is Schwarzschild.

Noncommutative Gravity Solutions

We consider noncommutative geometries obtained from a triangular Drinfeld twist and review the formulation of noncommutative gravity. A detailed study of the abelian twist geometry is presented, including the fundamental theorem of noncommutative Riemannian geometry. Inspired by [1, 2], we obtain solutions of noncommutative Einstein equations by considering twists that are compatible with the curved spacetime metric.

Star Product Geometries

We consider noncommutative geometries obtained from a triangular Drinfeld twist. This allows to construct and study a wide class of noncommutative manifolds and their deformed Lie algebras of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms. This way symmetry principles can be implemented. We review two main examples [15]-[18]: a) general covariance in noncommutative spacetime. This leads to a noncommutative gravity theory. b) Symplectomorphims of the algebra of observables associated to a noncommutative configuration space. This leads to a geometric formulation of quantization on noncommutative spacetime, i.e., we establish a noncommutative correspondence principle from *-Poisson brackets to *-commutators. New results concerning noncommutative gravity include the Cartan structural equations for the torsion and curvature tensors, and the associated Bianchi identities. Concerning scalar field theories the deformed algebra of classical and quantum observables has been understood in terms of a twist within the algebra.

Duality Rotations in Nonlinear Electrodynamics and in Extended Supergravity

We review the general theory of duality rotations which, in four dimensions, exchange electric with magnetic fields. Necessary and sufficient conditions in order for a theory to have duality symmetry are established. A nontrivial example is Born-Infeld theory with n abelian gauge fields and with Sp(2n,R) self-duality. We then review duality symmetry in supergravity theories. In the case of N=2 supergravity duality rotations are in general not a symmetry of the theory but a key ingredient in order to formulate the theory itself. This is due to the beautiful relation between the geometry of special Kaehler manifolds and duality rotations.

Noncommutative Symmetries and Gravity

Spacetime geometry is twisted (deformed) into noncommutative spacetime geometry, where functions and tensors are now star-multiplied. Consistently, spacetime diffeomorhisms are twisted into noncommutative diffeomorphisms. Their deformed Lie algebra structure and that of infinitesimal Poincare' transformations is defined and explicitly constructed. This allows to construct a noncommutative theory of gravity.

Non-Commutative GUTs, Standard Model and C,P,T properties from Seiberg-Witten map

Noncommutative generalizations of Yang-Mills theories using Seiberg-Witten map are in general not unique. We study these ambiguities and see that SO(10) GUT, at first order in the noncommutativity parameter θ, is unique and therefore is a truly unified theory, while SU(5) is not. We then present the noncommutative Standard Model compatible with SO(10) GUT. We next study the reality, hermiticity and C,P,T properties of the Seiberg-Witten map and of these noncommutative actions at all orders in θ. This allows to compare the Standard Model discussed in [5] with the present GUT inspired one.

preprint2002arXiv

Non-Commutative GUTs, Standard Model and C,P,T

Noncommutative Yang-Mills theories are sensitive to the choice of the representation that enters in the gauge kinetic term. We constrain this ambiguity by considering grand unified theories. We find that at first order in the noncommutativity parameter θ, SU(5) is not truly a unified theory, while SO(10) has a unique noncommutative generalization. In view of these results we discuss the noncommutative SM theory that is compatible with SO(10) GUT and find that there are no modifications to the SM gauge kinetic term at lowest order in θ. We study in detail the reality, hermiticity and C,P,T properties of the Seiberg-Witten map and of the resulting effective actions expanded in ordinary fields. We find that in models of GUTs (or compatible with GUTs) right-handed fermions and left-handed ones appear with opposite Seiberg-Witten map.

Monopoles in Space-Time Noncommutative Born-Infeld theory

We transform static solutions of space-noncommutative Dirac-Born-Infeld theory (DBI) into static solutions of space-time noncommutative DBI. Via Seiberg-Witten map we match this symmetry transformation with a corresponding symmetry of commutative DBI. This allows to: 1) study new BPS type magnetic monopoles, with constant electric and magnetic background and describe them both in the commutative and in the noncommutative setting; 2) relate by S-duality space-noncommutative magnetic monopoles to space-noncommutative electric monopoles

Nonlinear Self-Duality in Even Dimensions

We show that the Born-Infeld theory with n complex abelian gauge fields written in an auxiliary field formulation has a U(n,n) duality group. We conjecture the form of the Lagrangian obtained by eliminating the auxiliary fields and then introduce a new reality structure leading to a Born-Infeld theory with n real fields and an Sp(2n,R) duality symmetry. The real and complex constructions are extended to arbitrary even dimensions. The maximal noncompact duality group is U(n,n) for complex fields. For real fields the duality group is Sp(2n,R) if half of the dimension of space-time is even and O(n,n) if it is odd. We also discuss duality under the maximal compact subgroup, which is the self-duality group of the theory obtained by fixing the expectation value of a scalar field. Supersymmetric versions of self-dual theories in four dimensions are also discussed.

Quantum Orthogonal Planes: ISO_{q,r}(N) and SO_{q,r}(N) -- Bicovariant Calculi and Differential Geometry on Quantum Minkowski Space

We construct differential calculi on multiparametric quantum orthogonal planes in any dimension N. These calculi are bicovariant under the action of the full inhomogeneous (multiparametric) quantum group ISO_{q,r}(N), and do contain dilatations. If we require bicovariance only under the quantum orthogonal group SO_{q,r}(N), the calculus on the q-plane can be expressed in terms of its coordinates x^a, differentials dx^a and partial derivatives \partial_a without the need of dilatations, thus generalizing known results to the multiparametric case. Using real forms that lead to the signature (n+1,m) with m = n-1, n, n+1 , we find ISO_{q,r}(n+1, m) and SO_{q,r}(n+1,m) bicovariant calculi on the multiparametric quantum spaces. The particular case of the quantum Minkowski space ISO_{q,r}(3,1)/SO_{q,r}(3,1) is treated in detail. The conjugated partial derivatives \partial_a* can be expressed as linear combinations of the \partial_a. This allows a deformation of the phase-space where no additional operators (besides x^a and p_a) are needed.

Real forms of quantum orthogonal groups, q-Lorentz groups in any dimension

We review known real forms of the quantum orthogonal groups SO_q(N). New *-conjugations are then introduced and we contruct all real forms of quantum orthogonal groups. We thus give an RTT formulation of the *-conjugations on SO_q(N) that is complementary to the U_q(g) *-structure classification of Twietmeyer \cite{Twietmeyer}. In particular we easily find and describe the real forms SO_q(N-1,1) for any value of N. Quantum subspaces of the q-Minkowski space are analized.

Universal Enveloping Algebra and Differential Calculi on Orthogonal q-groups

We review the construction of the multiparametric quantum group $ISO_{q,r}(N)$ as a projection from $SO_{q,r}(N+2) $ and show that it is a bicovariant bimodule over $SO_{q,r}(N)$. The universal enveloping algebra $U_{q,r}(iso(N))$, characterized as the Hopf algebra of regular functionals on $ISO_{q,r}(N)$, is found as a Hopf subalgebra of $U_{q,r}(so(N+2))$ and is shown to be a bicovariant bimodule over $U_{q,r}(so(N))$. An R-matrix formulation of $U_{q,r}(iso(N))$ is given and we prove the pairing $U_{q,r}(iso(N))\leftrightarrow ISO_{q,r}(N)$. We analyze the subspaces of $U_{q,r}(iso(N))$ that define bicovariant differential calculi on $ISO_{q,r}(N)$.

R-Matrix Formulation of the Quantum Inhomogeneous Groups Iso_qr(N) and Isp_qr(N)

The quantum commutations $RTT=TTR$ and the orthogonal (symplectic) conditions for the inhomogeneous multiparametric $q$-groups of the $B_n,C_n,D_n$ type are found in terms of the $R$-matrix of $B_{n+1},C_{n+1},D_{n+1}$. A consistent Hopf structure on these inhomogeneous $q$-groups is constructed by means of a projection from $B_{n+1},C_{n+1},D_{n+1}$. Real forms are discussed: in particular we obtain the $q$-groups $ISO_{q,r}(n+1,n-1)$, including the quantum Poincaré group.
