A degenerate elliptic-parabolic system arising in competitive contaminant transport

In this work we investigate a coupled system of degenerate and nonlinear partial differential equations governing the transport of reactive solutes in groundwater. We show that the system admits a unique weak solution provided the nonlinear adsorption isotherm associated with the reaction process satisfies certain physically reasonable structural conditions. We conclude, moreover, that the solute concentrations stay non-negative if the source term is componentwise non-negative and investigate numerically the finite speed of propagation of compactly supported initial concentrations, in a two-component test case.

A new transportation distance with bulk/interface interactions and flux penalization

We introduce and study a new optimal transport problem on a bounded domain $\barΩ\subset \mathbb R^d$, defined via a dynamical Benamou-Brenier formulation. The model handles differently the motion in the interior and on the boundary, and penalizes the transfer of mass between the two. The resulting distance interpolates between classical optimal transport on $\barΩ$ on the one hand, and on the other hand between two independent optimal transport problems set on $Ω$ and $\partial Ω$.

The Schrödinger problem on the non-commutative Fisher-Rao space

We present a self-contained and comprehensive study of the Fisher-Rao space of matrix-valued non-commutative probability measures, and of the related Hellinger space. Our non-commutative Fisher-Rao space is a natural generalization of the classical commutative Fisher-Rao space of probability measures and of the Bures-Wasserstein space of Hermitian positive-definite matrices. We introduce and justify a canonical entropy on the non-commutative Fisher-Rao space, which differs from the von Neumann entropy. We consequently derive the analogues of the heat flow, of the Fisher information, and of the dynamical Schrödinger problem. We show the $Γ$-convergence of the $ε$-Schrödinger problem towards the geodesic problem for the Fisher-Rao space, and, as a byproduct, the strict geodesic convexity of the entropy.

Computing discrete equivariant harmonic maps

We present effective methods to compute equivariant harmonic maps from the universal cover of a surface into a nonpositively curved space. By discretizing the theory appropriately, we show that the energy functional is strongly convex and derive convergence of the discrete heat flow to the energy minimizer, with explicit convergence rate. We also examine center of mass methods, after showing a generalized mean value property for harmonic maps. We feature a concrete illustration of these methods with Harmony, a computer software that we developed in C++, whose main functionality is to numerically compute and display equivariant harmonic maps.

Computing harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds

In the previous paper [GLM2018], we showed that the theory of harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds may be discretized by introducing triangulations with vertex and edge weights on the domain manifold. In the present paper, we study convergence of the discrete theory to the smooth theory when taking finer and finer triangulations. We present suitable conditions on the weighted triangulations that ensure convergence of discrete harmonic maps to smooth harmonic maps. Our computer software Harmony implements these methods to computes equivariant harmonic maps in the hyperbolic plane.

A fitness-driven cross-diffusion system from polulation dynamics as a gradient flow

We consider a fitness-driven model of dispersal of $N$ interacting populations, which was previously studied merely in the case $N=1$. Based on some optimal transport distance recently introduced, we identify the model as a gradient flow in the metric space of Radon measures. We prove existence of global non-negative weak solutions to the corresponding system of parabolic PDEs, which involves degenerate cross-diffusion. Under some additional hypotheses and using a new multicomponent Poincaré-Beckner functional inequality, we show that the solutions converge exponentially to an ideal free distribution in the long time regime.

A new optimal transport distance on the space of finite Radon measures

We introduce a new optimal transport distance between nonnegative finite Radon measures with possibly different masses. The construction is based on non-conservative continuity equations and a corresponding modified Benamou-Brenier formula. We establish various topological and geometrical properties of the resulting metric space, derive some formal Riemannian structure, and develop differential calculus following F. Otto's approach. Finally, we apply these ideas to identify an ideal free distribution model of population dynamics as a gradient flow and obtain new long-time convergence results.

A KPP road-field system with spatially periodic exchange terms

We take interest in a reaction-diffusion system which has been recently proposed [11] as a model for the effect of a road on propagation phenomena arising in epidemiology and ecology. This system consists in coupling a classical Fisher-KPP equation in a half-plane with a line with fast diffusion accounting for a straight road. The effect of the line on spreading properties of solutions (with compactly supported initial data) was investigated in a series of works starting from [11]. We recover these earlier results in a more general spatially periodic framework by exhibiting a threshold for road diffusion above which the propagation is driven by the road and the global speed is accelerated. We also discuss further applications of our approach, which will rely on the construction of a suitable generalized principal eigenvalue, and investigate in particular the spreading of solutions with exponentially decaying initial data.

A Wasserstein gradient flow approach to Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations

The Poisson-Nernst-Planck system of equations used to model ionic transport is interpreted as a gradient flow for the Wasserstein distance and a free energy in the space of probability measures with finite second moment. A variational scheme is then set up and is the starting point of the construction of global weak solutions in a unified framework for the cases of both linear and nonlinear diffusion. The proof of the main results relies on the derivation of extra estimates based on the flow interchange technique developed by Matthes, McCann, and Savaré.

The gradient flow structure for incompressible immiscible two-phase flows in porous media

We show that the widely used model governing the motion of two incompressible immiscible fluids in a possibly heterogeneous porous medium has a formal gradient flow structure. More precisely, the fluid composition is governed by the gradient flow of some non-smooth energy. Starting from this energy together with a dissipation potential, we recover the celebrated Darcy-Muskat law and the capillary pressure law governing the flow thanks to the principle of least action. Our interpretation does not require the introduction of any algebraic transformation like, e.g., the global pressure or the Kirchhoff transform, and can be transposed to the case of more phases.

Systems of partial differential equations in porous medium

We investigate systems of degenerate parabolic equations idealizing reactive solute transport in porous media. Taking advantage of the inherent structure of the system that allows to deduce a scalar Generalized Porous Medium Equation for the sum of the solute concentrations, we show existence of a unique weak solution to the coupled system and derive regularity estimates. We also prove that the system supports solutions propagating with finite speed thus giving rise to free boundaries and interaction of compactly supported initial concentrations of different species.

Linear relaxation to planar Travelling Waves in Inertial Confinement Fusion

We study linear stability of planar travelling waves for a scalar reaction-diffusion equation with non-linear anisotropic diffusion. The mathematical model is derived from the full thermo-hydrodynamical model describing the process of Inertial Confinement Fusion. We show that solutions of the Cauchy problem with physically relevant initial data become planar exponentially fast with rate $s(\eps',k)>0$, where $\eps'=\frac{T_{min}}{T_{max}}\ll 1$ is a small temperature ratio and $k\gg 1$ the transversal wrinkling wavenumber of perturbations. We rigorously recover in some particular limit $(\eps',k)\rightarrow (0,+\infty)$ a dispersion relation $s(\eps',k)\sim γ_0 k^α$ previously computed heuristically and numerically in some physical models of Inertial Confinement Fusion.

Traveling Wave Solutions of Advection-Diffusion Equations with Nonlinear Diffusion

We study the existence of particular traveling wave solutions of a nonlinear parabolic degenerate diffusion equation with a shear flow. Under some assumptions we prove that such solutions exist at least for propagation speeds c {\in}]c*, +{\infty}, where c* > 0 is explicitly computed but may not be optimal. We also prove that a free boundary hy- persurface separates a region where u = 0 and a region where u > 0, and that this free boundary can be globally parametrized as a Lipschitz continuous graph under some additional non-degeneracy hypothesis; we investigate solutions which are, in the region u > 0, planar and linear at infinity in the propagation direction, with slope equal to the propagation speed.
