Coupled-mode theory for binary optical lattices

The coupled-mode theory is developed for description of the nonlinear wave dynamics in binary optical lattices. The obtained equations of motion accurately describe nonlinear wave dynamics close to the band edges and in the gap of the linear spectrum of the system. In order to demonstrate the power of the presented approach, bright gap solitary wave solutions of the nonlinear coupled- mode equations are derived and examined both analytically and numerically. The presented results are relevant to nonlinear wave phenomena in coupled waveguide arrays, coupled nano-cavities in photonic crystals, metallo-dielectric systems, and the Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices.

Non-Markovian dynamics of the sine-Gordon solitons

The sine-Gordon equation exhibits a gap in its linear spectrum. That gives rise to memory, or non-Markovian, effects in the soliton formation processes. The generalized variational approach is suggested to derive the model equation that governs the solitary wave evolution. The detailed analytical and numerical studies show that the soliton relaxation dynamics exhibits the main specific features of quantum emitters decay processes in photonic band gap materials. In particular, the non-Markovian effects lead to the extremely long-lived oscillations of the sine-Gordon solitons. That results in the bound state of the soliton with the radiated linear waves.

Negative refraction and spatial echo in optical waveguide arrays

The special symmetry properties of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation allow a complete revival of the initial wavefunction. That is employed in the context of stationary propagation of light in a waveguide array. As an inverting system we propose a short array of almost isolated waveguides which cause a relative pi phase shift in the neighboring waveguides. By means of numerical simulations of the model equations we demonstrate a novel mechanism for the negative refraction of spatial solitons.
