Quantum Chaos and Unitary Black Hole Evaporation

The formation and evaporation of small AdS black holes in a theory with a holographic dual is governed by the usual rules of quantum mechanics. The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis explains the validity of semiclassical gravity for local bulk observables and can be used to quantify the magnitude of quantum corrections to the semiclassical approximation. The holographic dual produces a basis of black hole states with finite energy width, and observables that are smooth functions on the classical phase space will self-average over a large number of energy eigenstates, exponential in the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S, leading to results that are consistent with semiclassical gravity up to small corrections of order exp(-S/2). As expected, the semiclassical description breaks down for transition amplitudes that contribute to the unitary S matrix of the holographic theory.

Lifshitz hydrodynamics at generic $z$ from a moving black brane

A Lifshitz black brane at generic dynamical critical exponent $z > 1$, with non-zero linear momentum along the boundary, provides a holographic dual description of a non-equilibrium steady state in a quantum critical fluid, with Lifshitz scale invariance but without boost symmetry. We consider moving Lifshitz branes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity and obtain the non-relativistic stress tensor complex of the dual field theory via a suitable holographic renormalisation procedure. The resulting black brane hydrodynamics and thermodynamics are a concrete holographic realization of a Lifshitz perfect fluid with a generic dynamical critical exponent.

Non-equilibrium steady states in quantum critical systems with Lifshitz scaling

We study out-of-equilibrium energy transport in a quantum critical fluid with Lifshitz scaling symmetry following a local quench between two semi-infinite fluid reservoirs. The late time energy flow is universal and is accommodated via a steady state occupying an expanding central region between outgoing shock and rarefaction waves. We consider the admissibility and entropy conditions for the formation of such a non-equilibrium steady state for a general dynamical critical exponent z in arbitrary dimensions and solve the associated Riemann problem. The Lifshitz fluid with z=2 can be obtained from a Galilean boost invariant field theory and the non-equilibrium steady state is identified as a boosted thermal state. A Lifshitz fluid with generic z is scale invariant but without boost symmetry and in this case the non-equilibrium steady state is genuinely non-thermal.

A holographic model for black hole complementarity

We explore a version of black hole complementarity, where an approximate semiclassical effective field theory for interior infalling degrees of freedom emerges holographically from an exact evolution of exterior degrees of freedom. The infalling degrees of freedom have a complementary description in terms of outgoing Hawking radiation and must eventually decohere with respect to the exterior Hamiltonian, leading to a breakdown of the semiclassical description for an infaller. Trace distance is used to quantify the difference between the complementary time evolutions, and to define a decoherence time. We propose a dictionary where the evolution with respect to the bulk effective Hamiltonian corresponds to mean field evolution in the holographic theory. In a particular model for the holographic theory, which exhibits fast scrambling, the decoherence time coincides with the scrambling time. The results support the hypothesis that decoherence of the infalling holographic state and disruptive bulk effects near the curvature singularity are complementary descriptions of the same physics, which is an important step toward resolving the black hole information paradox.

Quantum information erasure inside black holes

An effective field theory for infalling observers in the vicinity of a quasi-static black hole is given in terms of a freely falling lattice discretization. The lattice model successfully reproduces the thermal spectrum of outgoing Hawking radiation, as was shown by Corley and Jacobson, but can also be used to model observations made by a typical low-energy observer who enters the black hole in free fall at a prescribed time. The explicit short distance cutoff ensures that, from the viewpoint of the infalling observer, any quantum information that entered the black hole more than a scrambling time earlier has been erased by the black hole singularity. This property, combined with the requirement that outside observers need at least of order the scrambling time to extract quantum information from the black hole, ensures that a typical infalling observer does not encounter drama upon crossing the black hole horizon in a theory where black hole information is preserved for asymptotic observers.

Classical and quantum temperature fluctuations via holography

We study local temperature fluctuations in a 2+1 dimensional CFT on the sphere, dual to a black hole in asymptotically AdS spacetime. The fluctuation spectrum is governed by the lowest-lying hydrodynamic modes of the system whose frequency and damping rate determine whether temperature fluctuations are thermal or quantum. We calculate numerically the corresponding quasinormal frequencies and match the result with the hydrodynamics of the dual CFT at large temperature. As a by-product of our analysis we determine the appropriate boundary conditions for calculating low-lying quasinormal modes for a four-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole in global AdS.

Holographic thermalization with Lifshitz scaling and hyperscaling violation

A Vaidya type geometry describing gravitation collapse in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime with hyperscaling violation provides a simple holographic model for thermalization near a quantum critical point with non-trivial dynamic and hyperscaling violation exponents. The allowed parameter regions are constrained by requiring that the matter energy momentum tensor satisfies the null energy condition. We present a combination of analytic and numerical results on the time evolution of holographic entanglement entropy in such backgrounds for different shaped boundary regions and study various scaling regimes, generalizing previous work by Liu and Suh.

Black holes without firewalls

The postulates of black hole complementarity do not imply a firewall for infalling observers at a black hole horizon. The dynamics of the stretched horizon, that scrambles and re-emits information, determines whether infalling observers experience anything out of the ordinary when entering a large black hole. In particular, there is no firewall if the stretched horizon degrees of freedom retain information for a time of order the black hole scrambling time.

Pure states and black hole complementarity

The future apparent horizon of a black hole develops large stress energy due to quantum effects, unless the outgoing modes are in a thermal density matrix at the local Hawking temperature. It is shown for generic pure states that the deviation from thermality is so small that an infalling observer will see no drama on their way to the stretched horizon, providing a derivation of black hole complementarity after the Page time. Atypical pure states, and atypical observers, may of course see surprises, but that is not surprising.

Thermal Correlators in Holographic Models with Lifshitz scaling

We study finite temperature effects in two distinct holographic models that exhibit Lifshitz scaling, looking to identify model independent features in the dual strong coupling physics. We consider the thermodynamics of black branes and find different low-temperature behavior of the specific heat. Deformation away from criticality leads to non-trivial temperature dependence of correlation functions and we study how the characteristic length scale in the two point function of scalar operators varies as a function of temperature and deformation parameters.

Thermalization and entanglement following a non-relativistic holographic quench

We develop a holographic model for thermalization following a quench near a quantum critical point with non-trivial dynamical critical exponent. The anti-de Sitter Vaidya null collapse geometry is generalized to asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime. Non-local observables such as two-point functions and entanglement entropy in this background then provide information about the length and time scales relevant to thermalization. The propagation of thermalization exhibits similar "horizon" behavior as has been seen previously in the conformal case and we give a heuristic argument for why it also appears here. Finally, analytic upper bounds are obtained for the thermalization rates of the non-local observables.

Black Hole Evolution

Black hole formation and evaporation is studied in the semiclassical approximation in simple 1+1-dimensional models, with emphasis on issues related to Hawking's information paradox. Exact semiclassical solutions are described and questions of boundary conditions and vacuum stability are discussed. The validity of the semiclassical approximation has been called into question in the context of the information puzzle. A different approach, where black hole evolution is assumed to be unitary, is described. It requires unusual causal properties and kinematic behavior of matter that may be realized in string theory.
