Quantum Chaos and Unitary Black Hole Evaporation

The formation and evaporation of small AdS black holes in a theory with a holographic dual is governed by the usual rules of quantum mechanics. The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis explains the validity of semiclassical gravity for local bulk observables and can be used to quantify the magnitude of quantum corrections to the semiclassical approximation. The holographic dual produces a basis of black hole states with finite energy width, and observables that are smooth functions on the classical phase space will self-average over a large number of energy eigenstates, exponential in the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S, leading to results that are consistent with semiclassical gravity up to small corrections of order exp(-S/2). As expected, the semiclassical description breaks down for transition amplitudes that contribute to the unitary S matrix of the holographic theory.

Conformal Wavefunctions for Graviton Amplitudes

The extended-BMS algebra of asymptotically flat spacetime contains an SO(3,1) subgroup that acts by conformal transformations on the celestial sphere. It is of interest to study the representations of this subgroup associated with gravitons. To reduce the equation of motion to a Schrodinger-like equation it is necessary to impose a non-covariant gauge condition. Using these solutions, leading-order gauge invariant Weyl scalars are then computed and decomposed into families of unitary principal series representations. An invertible holographic mapping is constructed between these unitary principal series operators and massless spin-2 perturbations of flat spacetime.

BMS Symmetry via AdS/CFT

With a view to understanding extended-BMS symmetries in the framework of the $AdS_4/CFT_3$ correspondence, asymptotically AdS geometries are constructed with null impulsive shockwaves involving a discontinuity in superrotation parameters. The holographic dual is proposed to be a two-dimensional Euclidean defect conformal field localized on a particular timeslice in a three-dimensional conformal field theory on de Sitter spacetime. The defect conformal field theory generates a natural action of the Virasoro algebra. The large radius of curvature limit $\ell\to\infty$ yields spacetimes with nontrivial extended-BMS charges.

A holographic model for black hole complementarity

We explore a version of black hole complementarity, where an approximate semiclassical effective field theory for interior infalling degrees of freedom emerges holographically from an exact evolution of exterior degrees of freedom. The infalling degrees of freedom have a complementary description in terms of outgoing Hawking radiation and must eventually decohere with respect to the exterior Hamiltonian, leading to a breakdown of the semiclassical description for an infaller. Trace distance is used to quantify the difference between the complementary time evolutions, and to define a decoherence time. We propose a dictionary where the evolution with respect to the bulk effective Hamiltonian corresponds to mean field evolution in the holographic theory. In a particular model for the holographic theory, which exhibits fast scrambling, the decoherence time coincides with the scrambling time. The results support the hypothesis that decoherence of the infalling holographic state and disruptive bulk effects near the curvature singularity are complementary descriptions of the same physics, which is an important step toward resolving the black hole information paradox.

Holographic operator mapping in dS/CFT and cluster decomposition

The bulk to boundary mapping for massive scalar fields is constructed, providing a de Sitter analog of the LSZ reduction formula. The set of boundary correlators thus obtained defines a potentially new class of conformal field theories based on principal series representations of the global conformal group. Conversely, we show bulk field operators in de Sitter may be reconstructed from boundary operators. While consistent at the level of the free field theory, the boundary CFT does not satisfy cluster decomposition. The resulting conformal field theory does not satisfy the basic axioms of Euclidean quantum field theory due to Osterwalder and Schrader, so is likely not well-defined once interactions are included.

Quantum information erasure inside black holes

An effective field theory for infalling observers in the vicinity of a quasi-static black hole is given in terms of a freely falling lattice discretization. The lattice model successfully reproduces the thermal spectrum of outgoing Hawking radiation, as was shown by Corley and Jacobson, but can also be used to model observations made by a typical low-energy observer who enters the black hole in free fall at a prescribed time. The explicit short distance cutoff ensures that, from the viewpoint of the infalling observer, any quantum information that entered the black hole more than a scrambling time earlier has been erased by the black hole singularity. This property, combined with the requirement that outside observers need at least of order the scrambling time to extract quantum information from the black hole, ensures that a typical infalling observer does not encounter drama upon crossing the black hole horizon in a theory where black hole information is preserved for asymptotic observers.

Typical Event Horizons in AdS/CFT

We consider the construction of local bulk operators in a black hole background dual to a pure state in conformal field theory. The properties of these operators in a microcanonical ensemble are studied. It has been argued in the literature that typical states in such an ensemble contain firewalls, or otherwise singular horizons. We argue this conclusion can be avoided with a proper definition of the interior operators.

preprint2013arXiv

Black holes without firewalls

The postulates of black hole complementarity do not imply a firewall for infalling observers at a black hole horizon. The dynamics of the stretched horizon, that scrambles and re-emits information, determines whether infalling observers experience anything out of the ordinary when entering a large black hole. In particular, there is no firewall if the stretched horizon degrees of freedom retain information for a time of order the black hole scrambling time.

Hidden Kerr/CFT at finite frequencies

Massless fields propagating in a generic Kerr black hole background enjoy a hidden SL(2,R)xSL(2,R) symmetry. We determine how the exact mode functions decompose into representations of this symmetry group. This extends earlier results on the low frequency limit of the massless scalar case to finite frequencies and general spin. As an application, we numerically determine the parameters of the representations that appear in quasinormal modes. These results represent a first step to formulating a more precise mapping to a holographic dual conformal field theory for generic black holes.

Loop effects and infrared divergences in slow-roll inflation

Loop corrections to observables in slow-roll inflation are found to diverge no worse than powers of the log of the scale factor, extending Weinberg's theorem to quasi-single field inflation models. Demanding perturbation theory be valid during primordial inflation leads to constraints on the effective lagrangian. This leads to some interesting constraints and coincidences on the landscape of inflationary vacua.

preprint2013arXiv

Pure states and black hole complementarity

The future apparent horizon of a black hole develops large stress energy due to quantum effects, unless the outgoing modes are in a thermal density matrix at the local Hawking temperature. It is shown for generic pure states that the deviation from thermality is so small that an infalling observer will see no drama on their way to the stretched horizon, providing a derivation of black hole complementarity after the Page time. Atypical pure states, and atypical observers, may of course see surprises, but that is not surprising.

preprint2012arXiv

Generalized hidden Kerr/CFT

We construct a family of vector fields that generate local symmetries in the solution space of low frequency massless field perturbations in the general Kerr geometry. This yields a one-parameter family of SL(2,R)x SL(2,R) algebras. We identify limits in which the SL(2,R)xSL(2,R) algebra contracts to an SL(2,R) symmetry of the Schwarzschild background. We note that for a particular value of our new free parameter, the symmetry algebra generates the quasinormal mode spectrum of a Kerr black hole in the large damping limit, suggesting a connection between the hidden conformal symmetry and a fundamental CFT underlying the quantum Kerr black hole.

Initial states and infrared physics in locally de Sitter spacetime

The long wavelength physics in a de Sitter region depends on the initial quantum state. While such long wavelength physics is under control for massive fields near the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state, such initial states make unnatural assumptions about initial data outside the region of causal contact of a local observer. We argue that a reasonable approximation to a maximum entropy state, one that makes minimal assumptions outside an observer's horizon volume, is one where a cutoff is placed on a surface bounded by timelike geodesics, just outside the horizon. For sufficiently early times, such a cutoff induces secular logarithmic divergences with the expansion of the region. For massive fields, these effects sum to finite corrections at sufficiently late times. The difference between the cutoff correlators and Hartle-Hawking correlators provides a measure of the theoretical uncertainty due to lack of knowledge of the initial state in causally disconnected regions. These differences are negligible for primordial inflation, but can become significant during epochs with very long-lived de Sitter regions, such as we may be entering now.

Constructing local bulk observables in interacting AdS/CFT

Local operators in the bulk of AdS can be represented as smeared operators in the dual CFT. We show how to construct these bulk observables by requiring that the bulk operators commute at spacelike separation. This extends our previous work by taking interactions into account. Large-N factorization plays a key role in the construction. We show diagrammatically how this procedure is related to bulk Feynman diagrams.

preprint2011arXiv

Scaling dimensions in hidden Kerr/CFT

It has been proposed that a hidden conformal field theory (CFT) governs the dynamics of low frequency scattering in a general Kerr black hole background. We further investigate this correspondence by mapping higher order corrections to the massless wave equations in a Kerr background to an expansion within the CFT in terms of higher dimension operators. This implies the presence of infinite towers of CFT primary operators with positive conformal dimensions compatible with unitarity. The exact Kerr background softly breaks the conformal symmetry and the scaling dimensions of these operators run with frequency. The scale-invariant fixed point is dual to a degenerate case of flat spacetime.

Punctuated eternal inflation via AdS/CFT

The work is an attempt to model a scenario of inflation in the framework of Anti de Sit- ter/Conformal Field theory (AdS/CFT) duality, a potentially complete nonperturbative description of quantum gravity via string theory. We look at bubble geometries with de Sitter interiors within an ambient Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime and obtain a characterization for the states in the dual CFT on boundary of the asymptotic AdS which code the expanding dS bubble. These can then in turn be used to specify initial conditions for cosmology. Our scenario naturally interprets the entropy of de Sitter space as a (logarithm of) subspace of states of the black hole microstates. Consistency checks are performed and a number of implications regarding cosmology are discussed including how the key problems or paradoxes of conventional eternal inflation are overcome.

Local bulk operators in AdS/CFT: A holographic description of the black hole interior

To gain insight into how bulk locality emerges from the holographic conformal field theory, we reformulate the bulk to boundary map in as local a way as possible. In previous work, we carried out this program for Lorentzian AdS, and showed the support on the boundary could always be reduced to a compact region spacelike separated from the bulk point. In the present work the idea is extended to a complexified boundary, where spatial coordinates are continued to imaginary values. This continuation enables us to represent a local bulk operator as a CFT operator with support on a finite disc on the complexified boundary. We treat general AdS in Poincare coordinates and AdS3 in Rindler coordinates. We represent bulk operators inside the horizon of a BTZ black hole and we verify that the correct bulk two point functions are reproduced, including the divergence when one point hits the BTZ singularity. We comment on the holographic description of black holes formed by collapse and discuss locality and holographic entropy counting at finite N.

Local bulk operators in AdS/CFT: a boundary view of horizons and locality

We develop the representation of local bulk fields in AdS by non-local operators on the boundary, working in the semiclassical limit and using AdS_2 as our main example. In global coordinates we show that the boundary operator has support only at points which are spacelike separated from the bulk point. We construct boundary operators that represent local bulk operators inserted behind the horizon of the Poincare patch and inside the Rindler horizon of a two dimensional black hole. We show that these operators respect bulk locality and comment on the generalization of our construction to higher dimensional AdS black holes.

A note on alpha-vacua and interacting field theory in de Sitter space

We set up a consistent renormalizable perturbation theory of a scalar field in a nontrivial alpha vacuum in de Sitter space. Although one representation of the effective action involves non-local interactions between anti-podal points, we show the theory leads to causal physics, and we prove a spectral theorem for the interacting two-point function. We construct the renormalized stress energy tensor and show this develops no imaginary part at leading order in the interactions, consistent with stability.

Massive IIA String Theory and Matrix Theory Compactification

We propose a Matrix Theory approach to Romans' massive Type IIA supergravity. It is obtained by applying the procedure of Matrix Theory compactifications to Hull's proposal of the Massive Type IIA String Theory as M-Theory on a twisted torus. The resulting Matrix Theory is a super-Yang Mills theory on large N three-branes with a space dependent non-commutativity parameter, which is also independently derived by a T-duality approach. We give evidence showing that the energies of a class of physical excitations of the super-Yang Mills theory show the correct symmetry expected from Massive Type IIA string theory in a lightcone quantization.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays and de Sitter Vacua

The production of ultra high-energy cosmic rays in de Sitter invariant vacuum states is considered. Assuming the present-day universe is asymptoting toward a future de Sitter phase, we argue the observed flux of cosmic rays places a bound on the parameter $α$ that characterizes these de Sitter invariant vacuum states, generalizing earlier work of Starobinsky and Tkachev. If this bound is saturated, we obtain a new top-down scenario for the production of super-GZK cosmic rays. The observable predictions bear many similarities to the previously studied scenario where super-GZK events are produced by decay of galactic halo super-heavy dark matter particles.

Hagedorn transition for strings on pp-waves and tori with chemical potentials

It has been conjectured that string theory in a pp-wave background is dual to a sector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We study the Hagedorn transition for free strings in this background. We find that the free energy at the transition point is finite suggesting a confinement/deconfinement transition in the gauge theory. In the limit of vanishing mass parameter the free energy matches that of free strings on an 8-torus with momentum/winding chemical potential. The entropy in the microcanonical ensemble with fixed energy and fixed momentum/winding is computed in each case.

Moduli Space Metric of N=2 Supersymmetric SU(N) Gauge Theory and the Enhancon

We compute the moduli space metric of SU(N) Yang-Mills theory with N=2 supersymmetry in the vicinity of the point where the classical moduli vanish. This gauge theory may be realized as a set of N D7-branes wrapping a K3 surface, near the enhancon locus. The moduli space metric determines the low-energy worldvolume dynamics of the D7 branes near this point, including stringy corrections. Non-abelian gauge symmetry is not restored on the worldvolume at the enhancon point, but rather the gauge group remains U(1)^{N-1} and light electric and magnetically charged particles coexist. We also study the moduli space metric for a single probe brane in the background of N-1 branes near the enhancon point. We find quantum corrections to the supergravity probe metric that are not suppressed at large separations, but are down by 1/N factors, due to the response of the N-1 enhancon branes to the probe. A singularity appears before the probe reaches the enhancon point where a dyon becomes massless. We compute the masses of W-bosons and monopoles in a large N limit near this critical point.

Near-Extremal Black Hole Evaporation in Asymptotically Flat Spacetime

We study black hole evaporation of near-extremal black holes in spherically reduced models with asymptotically Minkowskian spacetime, with the effects of the back-reaction on the geometry included semi-classically. The stress-energy tensor is calculated for null in-falling observers. It is shown that the evaporation proceeds smoothly and there are no instabilities of the outer or inner apparent horizon before the endpoint of evaporation.

The Stress-Energy Tensor in Soluble Models of Spherically Symmetric Charged Black Hole Evaporation

We study the decay of a near-extremal black hole in AdS$_2$, related to the near-horizon region of 3+1-dimensional Reissner-Nordström spacetime, following Fabbri, Navarro, and Navarro-Salas. Back-reaction is included in a semiclassical approximation. Calculations of the stress-energy tensor of matter coupled to the physical spacetime for an affine null observer demonstrate that the black hole evaporation proceeds smoothly and the near-extremal black hole evolves back to an extremal ground state, until this approximation breaks down.

Constraints on Higher Derivative Operators in the Matrix Theory Effective Lagrangian

The consistency of Matrix theory with supergravity requires that in the large N_c limit terms of order v^4 in the SU(N_c) Matrix effective potential are not renormalized beyond one loop in perturbation theory. For SU(2) gauge group, the required non-renormalization theorem was proven recently by Paban, Sethi and Stern. In this paper we consider the constraints supersymmetry imposes on these terms for groups SU(N_c) with N_c>2. Non-renormalization theorems are proven for certain tensor structures, including the structures that appear in the one-loop effective action. However it is expected other tensor structures can in general be present, which may suffer renormalization at three loops and beyond.

Eleven-Dimensional Lorentz Symmetry from SUSY Quantum Mechanics

The supermembrane in light-cone gauge gives rise to a supersymmetric quantum mechanics system with SU(N) gauge symmetry when the group of area preserving diffeomorphisms is suitably regulated. de Wit, Marquard and Nicolai showed how eleven-dimensional Lorentz generators can be constructed from these degrees of freedom at the classical level. In this paper, these considerations are extended to the quantum level and it is shown the algebra closes to leading nontrivial order at large N. A proposal is made for extending these results to Matrix theory by realizing longitudinal boosts as large N renormalization group transformations.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theories from Branes and Orientifold Six-planes

We study brane configurations in the presence of orientifold six-planes. After deriving the curves for N=2 supersymmetric SU(Nc) gauge theories with one flavor in the symmetric or antisymmetric representation and Nf fundamental flavors, we rotate the brane configuration, reducing the supersymmetry to N=1. For the case of an antisymmetric flavor and less than two fundamental flavors, nonperturbative effects lead to a brane configuration that is topologically a torus. Using the description of the orientifold six-planes as Dn singularities we discuss the Higgs branches for N=2 brane configurations with Sp/SO gauge groups and the related N=1 theories with tensor representations.

N=2 Supersymmetric Gauge Theories, Branes and Orientifolds

Starting with configurations of fourbranes, fivebranes, sixbranes and orientifolds in Type IIA string theory we derive via M-theory the curves solving N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups SO(N) and Sp(2N). We also obtain new curves describing theories with product gauge groups. A crucial role in the discussion is played by the interaction of the orientifolds with the NS-fivebranes.

Semiclassical Approach to Black Hole Evaporation

Black hole evaporation may lead to massive or massless remnants, or naked singularities. This paper investigates this process in the context of two quite different two dimensional black hole models. The first is the original CGHS model, the second is another two dimensional dilaton-gravity model, but with properties much closer to physics in the real, four dimensional, world. Numerical simulations are performed of the formation and subsequent evaporation of black holes and the results are found to agree qualitatively with the exactly solved modified CGHS models, namely that the semiclassical approximation breaks down just before a naked singularity appears.

Unitarity Relations in c=1 Liouville Theory

We consider the S-matrix of c=1 Liouville theory with vanishing cosmological constant. We examine some of the constraints imposed by unitarity. These completely determine (N,2) amplitudes at tree level in terms of the (N,1) amplitudes when the plus tachyon momenta take generic values. A surprising feature of the matrix model results is the lack of particle creation branch cuts in the higher genus amplitudes. In fact, we show the naive field theory limit of Liouville theory would predict such branch cuts. However, unitarity in the full string theory ensures that such cuts do not appear in genus one (N,1) amplitudes. We conclude with some comments about the genus one (N,2) amplitudes.
