Distribution of Magnetic Dipole Strength -Binning

In previous works we examined the systematics of magnetic dipole transitions in a single j shell. We here extend the study to large space calculations. We consider Ti and Cr isotopes.. In this work we focus on the B(M1) strength as a function of excitation of energy. The initial state is the lowest J= state. T=1 state in a specified nucleus. The final states are J=0 T=2 , all in one plot, and J=2 T=2 in another. The initial figures have points all over the map although there is a suggestion of an exponential trend. To reduce clutter we perform binning operations in which the summed strength in a given energy interval is represented by a single point. The new binning curves show more clearly the exponential fall of B(M1)'s with energy.

Surface Delta Interaction and g factors

Using an attractive surface delta interaction we obtain wave functions for 2 neutrons (or neutron holes) in the model space of 2 orbits (l=4, j=7/2) and (l=2, j=5/2). If we take the single particle energies to be degenerate we find that the g factors for I=2, 4 and 6 are all the same -namely the orbital g factor of the single nucleon. For a free neutron this quantity zero all 2particle or 2 hole g factors are equal to zero as well.. Only the orbital part of the g -factors contribute - the spin part cancels out. We then consider the effects of introducing a single energy splititng between the 2 orbits. We speculate that g factors for all n can be obtained by a linear approximation.

The Middle of the Spectrum

There has been a great deal of attention to the low lying energy spectum in a nucleus becuse of the abundance of experimetal data. Likewise ,perhaps to a lesser extent but still significant the high end for a given configuratiion has been examined. Here ,using single j shell calculations as a guide we examine the middle part of the spectum resulting form single j shell calculations.Seniority arguments are used to partially explain the midshell behaviours even though in general seniority is not a good quantum number for mixed systems of neutrons and protons.

Consequences of omitting spin-orbit partner configurations on B(E2)'s and quadrupole moments in nuclei

Calculations of B(E2)'s and quadruplole moments in the g_{9/2 region below ^{100} Sn are hampered by the fact that the inclusion of the g_{7/2}configuration leads to model spaces that are too large to handle. We therefore examine lighter nuclei if the fp region where one can easily include all the orbitals, f,{}_{7/2}, p_{3/2}, p_{1/2}and f_{5/2} . We perform such calculations but then take a step back and exclude the f_{5/2} orbital. By comparing the 2 calculations we can hope to get insight into the importance of the missing spin-orbit partner in other regions.

J=0 T=1 Pairing Interaction Selection Rules

Wave functions arising form a pairing Hamiltonian E(0) i,e, one in which the interaction is only between J=0^{+}T=1 pairs, lead to magnetic dipole and Gamow-Teller transition rates that are much larger than those from an interaction E(J_{max}) in which a proton and a neutron couple to J=2j. With realistic interactions the results are in between the 2 extremes. In the course of this study we found that certain M1 and GT matrix elements vanish with E(0) . These are connected to seniority and reduced isospin isospin selection rules. We find the surprising result that The M1 strength to the single j scissors is larger for a J=0 T=1 pairing interaction than it is for Q.Q.

Wave functions of the Q.Q interaction in terms of unitary 9-j coefficients

We obtain wave functions for 2 protons and 2 neutrons in the g_{9/2} shell expressed as column vectors with amplitudes D(J_{p},J_{n}). When we use a quadrupole-quadrupole interaction (Q.Q) we get, in many cases, a very strong overlap with wave functions given by a single set of unitary 9j coefficients --U9j= ((jj)^{2j} (jj^{J_{B}} \ (jj)^{J_{p}} (jj)^{J_{n}})^{I}. Here J_{B}=9 for even I T =0 states. For both even and odd T=1 states we take JB equal to 8 whilst for odd I, T=0 we take JB to be 7. We compare the Q.Q results with those of a more realistic interaction.

Ratio B(E2, 4\rightarrow2)/B(E2, 2\rightarrow 0) in Even-Even Nuclei:Apparent Anomalous Behavior of the Chromium Isotopes

We consider the ratio RE4 = B(E2,4\rightarrow2)/B(E2,2\rightarrow 0) for the lowest 2^{+} and 4^{+} states in even-even nuclei. In the rotatonal and vibrational models and the shell model calculations here considered, RE4 is greater than one, however empirically, using adopted values from NNDC for ^{48}Cr and ^{50} Cr this ratio is less than one.

Isobaric analog states in the f_{7/2} and g_{9/2} shells

Calculations are performed for energies of isobaric analog states with isospins T=2 and T=3 in regions where they have been found experimentally e.g. f-p shell, and regions where they have not yet been found e.g. g_{9/2} near Z=50,N=50. We consider two approaches--one using binding energy formulas and Coulomb energies contained therein and the other using shell model calculations. It is noted that some (but not all) calculations yield very low excitation energies for the J=0^{+} T=2 isobaric analog state in ^{96} Ag.

Symmetry energy and neutron-proton radii studies with a Wigner-Heisenberg monopole-monopole interaction

The symmetry energy in nuclei is studied using a monopole-monopole two boby interaction which has an isospin dependent term. A Hartree theory is developed for this interaction which has an oscillator shell model basis with corresponding shell structure. The role of shell structure on the symmetry energy is then studied. We also find that the strength of the Heisenberg interaction is very important for understanding the difference between proton and neutron radii and features associated with halo nuclei. The (2j-1) rule with other interactions

We recently formulated a rule for isomeric states for a system of 4 nucleons with isospin T=1, namely that if the nucleons are in a single j shell then states with angular momenta J=2 and J=(2j-1) are either isomeric or ground states [ze12]. To show that this is a robust result, we here consider a new interaction from the literature that was used to discuss even-even and odd-even nuclei. We here apply it to an odd-odd nucleus.

Core Polarization with Variable Length Parameters for Valence Particles

We study quadrupole and monopole core polarization using harmonic oscillator wave funtions but with different length parameters for the valence particle as compared to the core. We use perturbation theory with a delta interaction. The results also hold for a density dependent delta interaction [1]. We study how the amount of core polarization varies with the distance of the valence particle from the core.

The Original Mixed Symmetry States - $6^{+}_{1}$ and $6^{+}_{2}$ in $^{48}$Ti

The $6^{+}_{1}$ and $6^{+}_{2}$ in $^{48}$Ti form a nearly degenerate doublet. In a single j shell calculation with the matrix elements from experiment the $6^{+}_{1}$ changes sign under the interchange of protons and neutron holes (odd signature) while the $6_{2}^{+}$ does not (even signature). As a consequence the calculated B(E2) $6_{1}^{+}\to 4_{1}^{+}$ is much stronger than the $6_{2}^{+}\to 4_{1}^{+}$ and the Gamow-Teller matrix element to the $6_{2}^{+}$ state vanishes. When using some popular interaction e.g. FPD6 in single j shell the ordering of the even signature and odd signature states gets reversed, so that the Gamow-Teller matrix element to the $6^{+}_{1}$ state vanishes and the $6_{2}^{+}\to 4_{1}^{+}$ E2 transition is the strong one. When configuration mixing is introduced, the E2 transition $6_{2}^{+}\to 4_{1}^{+}$ persists in being large. However the Gamow-Teller strengths reverse, with the large matrix element to the $6_{1}^{+}$ state in agreement with experiment. Static properties $μ$ and Q for the two $6^{+}$ states are also considered. The experimental B(E2)'s from the $6^{+}$ states to the $4_{1}^{+}$ state are not well known.
