$l_{1-2}$ GLasso: $L_{1-2}$ Regularized Multi-task Graphical Lasso for Joint Estimation of eQTL Mapping and Gene Network

A critical problem in genetics is to discover how gene expression is regulated within cells. Two major tasks of regulatory association learning are : (i) identifying SNP-gene relationships, known as eQTL mapping, and (ii) determining gene-gene relationships, known as gene network estimation. To share information between these two tasks, we focus on the unified model for joint estimation of eQTL mapping and gene network, and propose a $L_{1-2}$ regularized multi-task graphical lasso, named $L_{1-2}$ GLasso. Numerical experiments on artificial datasets demonstrate the competitive performance of $L_{1-2}$ GLasso on capturing the true sparse structure of eQTL mapping and gene network. $L_{1-2}$ GLasso is further applied to real dataset of ADNI-1 and experimental results show that $L_{1 -2}$ GLasso can obtain sparser and more accurate solutions than other commonly-used methods.

Dynamic reconstruction for atom probe tomography

Progress in the reconstruction for atom probe tomography has been limited since the first implementation of the protocol proposed by Bas et al. in 1995. This approach, and those subsequently developed, assume that the geometric parameters used to build the three-dimensional atom map are constant over the course of an analysis. Here, we test this assumption within the analyses of low-alloyed materials. By building upon methods recently proposed to measure the tomographic reconstruction parameters, we demonstrate that this assumption can introduce significant limitations in the accuracy of the analysis. Moreover, we propose a strategy to alleviate this problem through the implementation of a new reconstruction algorithm that dynamically accommodates variations in the tomographic reconstruction parameters.

Effects of the local structure dependence of evaporation fields on field evaporation behavior

Accurate three dimensional reconstructions of atomic positions, and full quantification of the information contained in atom probe tomography data relies on understanding the physical processes taking place during field evaporation of atoms from needle-shaped specimens. However, the modeling framework for atom probe tomography has remained qualitative at best. Building on the continuum field models previously developed, we introduce a more physical approach with the selection of evaporation events based on density functional theory calculations. This new model reproduces key features observed experimentally in terms of sequence of evaporation, desorption maps, and depth resolution, and provides insights into the physical limit for spatial resolution.
