The environmental dependence of the stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relation at 2 < z < 4

In the local universe, galaxies in clusters show different properties compared to more isolated systems. Understanding how this difference originates and whether it is already in place at high redshift is still a matter of debate. Thanks to uniquely deep optical spectra from the VANDELS survey, we investigate environmental effects on the stellar mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for a sample of ~1000 star-forming galaxies at 2<z<4. We complement our dataset with MOSFIRE follow-up of 21 galaxies to study the environmental dependence of the gas-phase MZR. Robust stellar and gas metallicities are derived, respectively, from well-calibrated photospheric absorptions features at 1501 and 1719 Åin the stacked spectra, and from optical emission lines ([OII]3726-3729, [OIII]5007, and Hbeta) in individual systems. We characterize the environment through multiple criteria by using the local galaxy density maps previously derived in VANDELS. We find that environmental effects are weak at these redshifts, and more important around the densest overdensity structures, where galaxies have a lower stellar Z (by 0.2 dex) and a lower gas-phase Z (by 0.1 dex) compared to the field, with a significance of 1 and 2 sigma, respectively. Crucially, this offset cannot be explained by a selection effect due to a higher SFR, a fainter UV continuum, or different dust attenuations and stellar ages. Despite the still low S/N of our results, we propose a combination of increased mergers and high-speed encounters, more efficient AGN feedback in dense cores, and cold gas inflows as viable mechanisms diluting the metal content of overdense galaxies or expelling their metals to the IGM. Finally, some tensions remain with semi-analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations, which predict no significant offset as a function of host halo mass, suggesting that an explicit implementation of environmental processes is needed.

High-quality strong lens candidates in the final Kilo Degree survey footprint

We present 97 new high-quality strong lensing candidates found in the final $\sim 350\,\rm deg^2$, that completed the full $\sim 1350\,\rm deg^2$ area of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Together with our previous findings, the final list of high-quality candidates from KiDS sums up to 268 systems. The new sample is assembled using a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier applied to $r$-band (best seeing) and $g,~r,~i$ color-composited images separately. This optimizes the complementarity of the morphology and color information on the identification of strong lensing candidates. We apply the new classifiers to a sample of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and a sample of bright galaxies (BGs) and select candidates that received a high probability to be a lens from the CNN ($P_{\rm CNN}$). In particular, setting $P_{\rm CNN}>0.8$ for the LRGs, the $1$-band CNN predicts 1213 candidates, while the $3$-band classifier yields 1299 candidates, with only $\sim$30\% overlap. For the BGs, in order to minimize the false positives, we adopt a more conservative threshold, $P_{\rm CNN} >0.9$, for both CNN classifiers. This results in 3740 newly selected objects. The candidates from the two samples are visually inspected by 7 co-authors to finally select 97 "high-quality" lens candidates which received mean scores larger than 6 (on a scale from 0 to 10). We finally discuss the effect of the seeing on the accuracy of CNN classification and possible avenues to increase the efficiency of multi-band classifiers, in preparation of next-generation surveys from ground and space.

Nuclear Charge Radii of the Nickel Isotopes $^{58-68,70}$Ni

Collinear laser spectroscopy is performed on the nickel isotopes $^{58-68,70}$Ni, using a time-resolved photon counting system. From the measured isotope shifts, nuclear charge radii $R_c$ are extracted and compared to theoretical results. Three ab initio approaches all employ, among others, the chiral interaction NNLO$_{\rm sat}$, which allows an assessment of their accuracy. We find agreement with experiment in differential radii $δ\left\langle r_\mathrm{c}^2 \right\rangle$ for all employed ab initio methods and interactions, while the absolute radii are consistent with data only for NNLO$_{\rm sat}$. Within nuclear density functional theory, the Skyrme functional SV-min matches experiment more closely than the Fayans functional Fy($Δr$,HFB).

Charge radius of the short-lived $^{68}$Ni and correlation with the dipole polarizability

We present the first laser spectroscopic measurement of the neutron-rich nucleus $^{68}$Ni at the \mbox{$N=40$} subshell closure and extract its nuclear charge radius. Since this is the only short-lived isotope for which the dipole polarizability $α_{\rm D}$ has been measured, the combination of these observables provides a benchmark for nuclear structure theory. We compare them to novel coupled-cluster calculations based on different chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, for which a strong correlation between the charge radius and dipole polarizability is observed, similar to the stable nucleus $^{48}$Ca. Three-particle--three-hole correlations in coupled-cluster theory substantially improve the description of the experimental data, which allows to constrain the neutron radius and neutron skin of $^{68}$Ni.

High-resolution laser spectroscopy of $^{27-32}$Al

Hyperfine spectra of $^\text{27-32}$Al ($Z=13$) have been measured at the ISOLDE-CERN facility via collinear laser spectroscopy using the $3s^23p\ ^2\text{P}^\text{o} _{3/2}\rightarrow 3s^24s\ ^2\text{S}_{1/2}$ atomic transition. For the first time, mean-square charge radii of radioactive aluminum isotopes have been determined alongside the previously unknown magnetic dipole moment of $^{29}$Al and electric quadrupole moments of $^{29,30}$Al. A potentially reduced charge radius at $N=19$ may suggest an effect of the $N=20$ shell closure, which is visible in the Al chain, contrary to other isotopic chains in the $sd$ shell. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations in the framework of the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group using multiple sets of two and three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory. While the trend of experimental magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments is well reproduced, the absolute values are underestimated by theory, consistent with earlier studies. Moreover, both the scale and trend of the charge radii appear to be very sensitive to the chosen interaction.

Superconductivity in Undoped BaFe2As2 by Tetrahedral Geometry Design

Fe-based superconductors exhibit a diverse interplay between charge, orbital, and magnetic ordering1-4. Variations in atomic geometry affect electron hopping between Fe atoms5,6 and the Fermi surface topology, influencing magnetic frustration and the pairing mechanism through changes of orbital overlap and occupancies7-11. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a systematic approach to realize superconductivity without chemical doping in BaFe2As2, employing geometric design within an epitaxial heterostructure. We control both tetragonality and orthorhombicity in BaFe2As2 through superlattice engineering, which we experimentally find to induce superconductivity when the As-Fe-As bond angle approaches that in a regular tetrahedron. This approach of superlattice design could lead to insights into low dimensional superconductivity in Fe-based superconductors.

Surface Crystallization of Monoatomic Pd Metallic Glasses

Crystallization from an amorphous atomic structure is usually seen as a spontaneous process in pursuit of a lower energy state, but for alloy systems it is often hard to elucidate because of the intrinsic structural and compositional complexity. Here, by means of electron beam irradiation, we found surface-limited, and thus size-dependent crystallization in a system of monoatomic Pd metallic glass, which is ascribed to the structural differences between the surface and the interior. The equilibrium thickness of the surface crystallization is controllable, presenting a promising approach to fabricate novel nanostructures. The investigation is believed to provide a general understanding of solid amorphous-to-crystalline phase transition from the nanoscale to the bulk size.

The VANDELS survey: Discovery of massive overdensities of galaxies at z>2

We want to investigate whether we can use Lyalpha emission to obtain information on the environment properties and whether Lyalpha emitters show different characteristics as a function of their environment. We estimated local densities in the VANDELS Chandra Deep Field-South (CDFS) and UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) fields, by using a three-dimensional algorithm which works in the RA-dec-redshift space. We selected a sample of 131 Lyalpha-emitting galaxies (EW(Lyalpha)>0 A), unbiased with respect to environmental density, to study their location with respect to the over- or under-dense environment. We identify 13 (proto)cluster candidates in the CDFS and nine in the UDS at 2<z<4, based on photometric and spectroscopic redshifts from VANDELS and from all the available literature. No significant difference is observed in the rest-frame U-V color between field and galaxies located within the identified overdensities. We find that VANDELS Lyalpha emitters (LAEVs) lie preferentially outside of overdense regions as the majority of the galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from VANDELS. The LAEVs in overdense regions tend to have low Lyalpha equivalent widths and low specific SFRs, and they also tend to be more massive than the LAEVs in the field. Their stacked Lyalpha profile shows a dominant red peak and a hint of a blue peak. Our results show that LAEVs are likely to be influenced by the environment and favour a scenario with outflows of low expansion velocities and high HI column densities for galaxies in overdense regions. An outflow with low expansion velocity could be related to the way galaxies are forming stars in overdense regions; the high HI column density can be a consequence of the gravitational potential of the overdensity. Therefore, Lyalpha-emitting galaxies can provide useful insights on the environment in which they reside.

The VANDELS survey: the relation between UV continuum slope and stellar metallicity in star-forming galaxies at z~3

The estimate of stellar metallicities (Z*) of high-z galaxies are of paramount importance in order to understand the complexity of dust effects and the reciprocal interrelations among stellar mass, dust attenuation, stellar age, and metallicity. Benefiting from uniquely deep FUV spectra of >500 star-forming galaxies at redshifts 2<z<5 extracted from the VANDELS survey and stacked in bins of stellar mass (M*) and UV continuum slope (beta), we estimate their stellar metallicities Z* from stellar photospheric absorption features at 1501 and 1719 Angstrom, which are calibrated with Starburst99 models and are largely unaffected by stellar age, dust, IMF, nebular continuum or interstellar absorption. Comparing them to photometric based spectral slopes in the range 1250-1750 Angstrom, we find that the stellar metallicity increases by ~0.5 dex from beta ~ -2 to beta ~ -1 (1 < A(1600) < 3.2), and a dependence with beta holds at fixed UV absolute luminosity M(UV) and stellar mass up to 10^(9.65) Msun. As a result, the metallicity is a fundamental ingredient for properly rescaling dust corrections based on M(UV) and M*. Using the same absorption features, we analyze the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) and find it is consistent with the previous VANDELS estimation based on a global fit of the FUV spectra. Similarly, we do not find a significant evolution between z=2 and z=3.5. Finally, the slopes of our MZR and Z*-beta relation are in agreement with the predictions of well-studied semi-analytic models of galaxy formation (SAM), while some tensions with observations remain as to the absolute metallicity normalization. The relation between UV slope and stellar metallicity is fundamental for the exploitation of large volume surveys with next-generation telescopes and for the physical characterization of galaxies in the first billion years of our Universe.

Isomer shift and magnetic moment of the long-lived 1/2$^{+}$ isomer in $^{79}_{30}$Zn$_{49}$: signature of shape coexistence near $^{78}$Ni

Collinear laser spectroscopy has been performed on the $^{79}_{30}$Zn$_{49}$ isotope at ISOLDE-CERN. The existence of a long-lived isomer with a few hundred milliseconds half-life was confirmed, and the nuclear spins and moments of the ground and isomeric states in $^{79}$Zn as well as the isomer shift were measured. From the observed hyperfine structures, spins $I = 9/2$ and $I = 1/2$ are firmly assigned to the ground and isomeric states. The magnetic moment $μ$ ($^{79}$Zn) = $-$1.1866(10) $μ_{\rm{N}}$, confirms the spin-parity $9/2^{+}$ with a $νg_{9/2}^{-1}$ shell-model configuration, in excellent agreement with the prediction from large scale shell-model theories. The magnetic moment $μ$ ($^{79m}$Zn) = $-$1.0180(12) $μ_{\rm{N}}$ supports a positive parity for the isomer, with a wave function dominated by a 2h-1p neutron excitation across the $N = 50$ shell gap. The large isomer shift reveals an increase of the intruder isomer mean square charge radius with respect to that of the ground state: $δ\langle r^{2}_{c}\rangle^{79,79m}$ = +0.204(6) fm$^{2}$, providing first evidence of shape coexistence.

Interplay of Spin-Orbit Interactions, Dimensionality, and Octahedral Rotations in Semimetallic SrIrO$_3$

We employ reactive molecular-beam epitaxy to synthesize the metastable perovskite SrIrO$_{3}$ and utilize {\it in situ} angle-resolved photoemission to reveal its electronic structure as an exotic narrow-band semimetal. We discover remarkably narrow bands which originate from a confluence of strong spin-orbit interactions, dimensionality, and both in- and out-of-plane IrO$_6$ octahedral rotations. The partial occupation of numerous bands with strongly mixed orbital characters signals the breakdown of the single-band Mott picture that characterizes its insulating two-dimensional counterpart, Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$, illustrating the power of structure-property relations for manipulating the subtle balance between spin-orbit interactions and electron-electron interactions.

Molecular-beam epitaxy of monolayer and bilayer WSe2: A scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study and deduction of exciton binding energy

Interests in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides have prompted some recent efforts to grow ultrathin layers of these materials epitaxially using molecular-beam epitaxy. However, growths of monolayer and bilayer WSe2, an important member of the transition-metal dichalcogenides family, by the molecular-beam epitaxy method remain uncharted probably because of the difficulty in generating tungsten fluxes from the elemental source. In this work, we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of molecular-beam epitaxy-grown WSe2 monolayer and bilayer, showing atomically flat epifilm with no domain boundary defect. This contrasts epitaxial MoSe2 films grown by the same method, where a dense network of the domain boudaries defects is present. The scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements of monolayer and bilayer WSe2 domains of the same sample reveal not only the bandgap narrowing upon increasing the film thickness from monolayer to bilayer, but also a band-bending effect across the boundary between monolayer and bilayer domains. This band-bending appears to be dictated by the edge states at steps of the bilayer islands. Finally, comparison is made between the scanning tunneling spectroscopy-measured electronic bandgaps with the exciton emission energies measured by photoluminescence, and the exciton binding energies in monolayer and bilayer WSe2/MoSe2 are thus estimated.

Temperature dependence of lower critical field in stripe ordered La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 superconductors

We report detailed measurements of the temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1 in the stripe ordered La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 (x = 0.10 and 0.15) superconductors. It is found that Hc1(T) of the samples increase with decreasing temperature and show an negative curvature below Tc. The penetration depth λ(T) estimated from Hc1(T) data satisfies a linear temperature dependence behavior below Tc/2, which is consistent with that in a superconductor with d-wave symmetry of the energy gap and the upward trend in Hc1(T) may be due to the cooperation of the hole and election pockets arising from the reconstruction of the Fermi surface, which contributes to illustrating the Fermi surface reconstruction in La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4.

Dynamic microscopic structures and dielectric response in the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition for BaTiO3 studied by first-principles molecular dynamics simulation

The dynamic structures of the cubic and tetragonal phase in BaTiO3 and its dielectric response above the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature (Tp) are studied by first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It's shown that the phase transition is due to the condensation of one of the transverse correlations. Calculation of the phonon properties for both the cubic and tetragonal phase shows a saturation of the soft mode frequency near 60 cm-1 near Tp and advocates its order-disorder nature. Our first-principles calculation leads directly to a two modes feature of the dielectric function above Tp [Phys. Rev. B 28, 6097 (1983)], which well explains the long time controversies between experiments and theories.
