Wealth distribution under the spread of infectious diseases

We develop a mathematical framework to study the economic impact of infectious diseases by integrating epidemiological dynamics with a kinetic model of wealth exchange. The multi-agent description leads to study the evolution over time of a system of kinetic equations for the wealth densities of susceptible, infectious and recovered individuals, whose proportions are driven by a classical compartmental model in epidemiology. Explicit calculations show that the spread of the disease seriously affects the distribution of wealth, which, unlike the situation in the absence of epidemics, can converge towards a stationary state with a bimodal form. Furthermore, simulations confirm the ability of the model to describe different phenomena characteristics of economic trends in situations compromised by the rapid spread of an epidemic, such as the unequal impact on the various wealth classes and the risk of a shrinking middle class.

Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes for the Boltzmann-Poisson system for semiconductors

In this paper we develop a class of Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes for solving the multi-scale semiconductor Boltzmann equation. The relevant scale which characterizes this kind of problems is the diffusive scaling. This means that, in the limit of zero mean free path, the system is governed by a drift-diffusion equation. Our aim is to develop a method which accurately works for the different regimes encountered in general semiconductor simulations: the kinetic, the intermediate and the diffusive one. Moreover, we want to overcome the restrictive time step conditions of standard time integration techniques when applied to the solution of this kind of phenomena without any deterioration in the accuracy. As a result, we obtain high order time and space discretization schemes which do not suffer from the usual parabolic stiffness in the diffusive limit. We show different numerical results which permit to appreciate the performances of the proposed schemes.

Asymptotic preserving Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta methods for non linear kinetic equations

We discuss Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) Runge Kutta methods which are particularly adapted to stiff kinetic equations of Boltzmann type. We consider both the case of easy invertible collision operators and the challenging case of Boltzmann collision operators. We give sufficient conditions in order that such methods are asymptotic preserving and asymptotically accurate. Their monotonicity properties are also studied. In the case of the Boltzmann operator, the methods are based on the introduction of a penalization technique for the collision integral. This reformulation of the collision operator permits to construct penalized IMEX schemes which work uniformly for a wide range of relaxation times avoiding the expensive implicit resolution of the collision operator. Finally we show some numerical results which confirm the theoretical analysis.

Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes for hyperbolic systems and kinetic equations in the diffusion limit

We consider Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta (R-K) schemes for hyperbolic systems with stiff relaxation in the so-called diffusion limit. In such regime the system relaxes towards a convection-diffusion equation. The first objective of the paper is to show that traditional partitioned IMEX R-K schemes will relax to an explicit scheme for the limit equation with no need of modification of the original system. Of course the explicit scheme obtained in the limit suffers from the classical parabolic stability restriction on the time step. The main goal of the paper is to present an approach, based on IMEX R-K schemes, that in the diffusion limit relaxes to an IMEX R-K scheme for the convection-diffusion equation, in which the diffusion is treated implicitly. This is achieved by an original reformulation of the problem, and subsequent application of IMEX R-K schemes to it. An analysis on such schemes to the reformulated problem shows that the schemes reduce to IMEX R-K schemes for the limit equation, under the same conditions derived for hyperbolic relaxation. Several numerical examples including neutron transport equations confirm the theoretical analysis.

Numerical Methods for the Optimal Control of Scalar Conservation Laws

We are interested in a class of numerical schemes for the optimization of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations. We present continuous and discretized relaxation schemes for scalar, one-- conservation laws. We present numerical results on tracking type problems with nonsmooth desired states and convergence results for higher--order spatial and temporal discretization schemes.

On a continuous mixed strategies model for evolutionary game theory

We consider an integro-differential model for evolutionary game theory which describes the evolution of a population adopting mixed strategies. Using a reformulation based on the first moments of the solution, we prove some analytical properties of the model and global estimates. The asymptotic behavior and the stability of solutions in the case of two strategies is analyzed in details. Numerical schemes for two and three strategies which are able to capture the correct equilibrium states are also proposed together with several numerical examples.

Adaptive and Recursive Time Relaxed Monte Carlo methods for rarefied gas dynamics

Recently a new class of Monte Carlo methods, called Time Relaxed Monte Carlo (TRMC), designed for the simulation of the Boltzmann equation close to fluid regimes have been introduced. A generalized Wild sum expansion of the solution is at the basis of the simulation schemes. After a splitting of the equation the time discretization of the collision step is obtained from the Wild sum expansion of the solution by replacing high order terms in the expansion with the equilibrium Maxwellian distribution; in this way speed up of the methods close to fluid regimes is obtained by efficiently thermalizing particles close to the equilibrium state. In this work we present an improvement of such methods which allows to obtain an effective uniform accuracy in time without any restriction on the time step and subsequent increase of the computational cost. The main ingredient of the new algorithms is recursivity. Several techniques can be used to truncate the recursive trees generated by the schemes without deteriorating the accuracy of the numerical solution. Techniques based on adaptive strategies are presented. Numerical results emphasize the gain of efficiency of the present simulation schemes with respect to standard DSMC methods.

Fast conservative and entropic numerical methods for the Boson Boltzmann equation

In this paper we derive accurate numerical methods for the quantum Boltzmann equation for a gas of interacting bosons. The schemes preserve the main physical features of the continuous problem, namely conservation of mass and energy, the entropy inequality and generalized Bose-Einstein distributions as steady states. These properties are essential in order to develop schemes that are able to capture the energy concentration behavior of bosons. In addition we develop fast algorithms for the numerical evaluation of the resulting quadrature formulas which allow the final schemes to be computed only in O(N^2 log N) operations instead of O(N^3).

Fokker-Planck Asymptotics for Traffic Flow Models

Starting from microscopic interaction rules we derive kinetic models of Fokker--Planck type for vehicular traffic flow. The derivation is based on taking a suitable asymptotic limit of the corresponding Boltzmann model. As particular cases, the derived models comprise existing models. New Fokker--Planck models are also given and their differences to existing models are highlighted. Finally, we report on numerical experiments.

Implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta schemes and applications to hyperbolic systems with relaxation

We consider new implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta methods for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with stiff relaxation terms. The explicit part is treated by a strong-stability-preserving (SSP) scheme, and the implicit part is treated by an L-stable diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta methods (DIRK). The schemes proposed are asymptotic preserving (AP) in the zero relaxation limit. High accuracy in space is obtained by Weighted Essentially Non Oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction. After a description of the mathematical properties of the schemes, several applications will be presented.

Kinetic models for socio-economic dynamics of speculative markets

In this paper we introduce a simple model for a financial market characterized by a single stock or good and an interplay between two different traders populations, chartists and fundamentalists, which determine the price dynamic of the stock. The model has been inspired by the microscopic Lux-Marchesi model (T.Lux, M.Marchesi, Nature 397, (1999), 498--500). The introduction of kinetic equations permits to study the asymptotic behavior of the investments and the price distributions and to characterize the regimes of lognormal behavior and the formation of power law tails.

Mesoscopic modelling of financial markets

We derive a mesoscopic description of the behavior of a simple financial market where the agents can create their own portfolio between two investment alternatives: a stock and a bond. The model is derived starting from the Levy-Levy-Solomon microscopic model (Econ. Lett., 45, (1994), 103--111) using the methods of kinetic theory and consists of a linear Boltzmann equation for the wealth distribution of the agents coupled with an equation for the price of the stock. From this model, under a suitable scaling, we derive a Fokker-Planck equation and show that the equation admits a self-similar lognormal behavior. Several numerical examples are also reported to validate our analysis.

Self-similarity and power-like tails in nonconservative kinetic models

In this paper, we discuss the large--time behavior of solution of a simple kinetic model of Boltzmann--Maxwell type, such that the temperature is time decreasing and/or time increasing. We show that, under the combined effects of the nonlinearity and of the time--monotonicity of the temperature, the kinetic model has non trivial quasi-stationary states with power law tails. In order to do this we consider a suitable asymptotic limit of the model yielding a Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution. The same idea is applied to investigate the large-time behavior of an elementary kinetic model of economy involving both exchanges between agents and increasing and/or decreasing of the mean wealth. In this last case, the large-time behavior of the solution shows a Pareto power law tail. Numerical results confirm the previous analysis.
